The Three Weeks & Tisha B’Av: Old Mourning and New Mourning By Rabbanit Bracha Jaffe Beth Tfiloh Community Educator
Many of us have experienced the timeline of mourning for a parent — the year of avelut. It begins with a week of intense mourning during shiva, followed by shloshim – finishing 30 days of diminished mourning when the mourners rejoin the outside world while keeping their social interactions and rejoicing with music to a minimum. For a parent there is one more phase which is the Year of Mourning. During the rest of the first year, the mourning restrictions are again stepped down. The mourner refrains from attending public musical gatherings, such as weddings, and Kaddish is said in a minyan, three
times a day until the end of the eleventh month. Rav Yosef Dov Soloveitchik, one of our greatest Jewish scholars and thinkers of the 20th century, explains that these mourning practices give structure and shepherds the mourners through a year of new mourning. The grief is most sharp and tangible right after the loss and the mourners are cocooned and held as they slowly transition back to their everyday life and try to make sense of their loss. However – what do we do with old mourning -- the centuries-old mourning of the collective Jewish people? Each year during the summer months, we mourn the destructions of our two Continued on page 5

The Three Weeks
Continued from page 1
Temples during a period known as the Three Weeks, bookended with fast days of the 17th day of Tammuz (Sunday, July 1) and Tisha B’Av (Saturday night, July 21 and Sunday, July 22). The Rav explains: our sages were very wise. There is no sharp pain for old mourning. It is difficult for us to feel the visceral loss of the Temple as we do not have a sense of its presence and centrality to Jewish life. But we must mourn their destruction and weep over their loss. This is done by flipping the timeline of avelut and gradually adding more mourning practices over this period. We start with the Three Weeks where the restrictions are as follows: no weddings or haircuts, no concerts or musical outings. The next stage is the Nine Days: no meat or wine, no swimming for pleasure or listening to music.
• Collect more 60 bags of food for GEDCO during the Pre-Pesach Chametz Drive • Collect hundreds of summer collection items to donate to homeless children attending Camp St. Vincent in Baltimore For more information or to get involved, please contact Director of BT Cares Social Action, Lindsay Gaister: lgaister@btfiloh.org.
This period of communal mourning culminates with the most intense day of mourning on Tisha B’Av: sitting on low stools like mourners, no washing or wearing leather shoes, no studying Torah, no perfumes, no marital relations. In addition, there is no eating or drinking for 25 hours which helps rid us of distraction and feelings of privilege. It is on this day that we vividly mourn the loss of the Temple as a community with lamentations and sad poems. May we all be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem, and may we merit the full rebuilding of Jerusalem speedily in our day.
ENTHUSIASTIC VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR FOOD GIVEAWAY Third Wednesday of the month, 8 am-12 pm Liberty Grace Church, 3400 Copley Rd., 21215 Volunteers can make a difference in someone’s life by ensuring that every person has healthy, nutritious food for their home. Through a partnership with the Maryland Food Bank, Liberty Grace Church members distribute food once a month to low-income community members in the Ashburton neighborhood, a neighborhood where many members of Baltimore’s Jewish community used to live. Volunteers will assist church members in sorting, packing, and distributing food. Volunteers will not only make a meaningful difference, but will also have the opportunity to get to know members of Liberty Grace Church, a congregation dedicated to health, wellness, and social action.

JULY-AUGUST 2018 A TAMMUZ-ELUL 5778
Meet our Members The Elgamil Family For Ben and Nikki Elgamil, coming to Beth Tfiloh’s Dahan Sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is more than an expression of their Jewish identity – it’s a sentimental throwback to their wedding which took place there four years ago. Although they attended the same college, shared a group of friends, and knew each other’s families, Ben and Nikki didn’t meet until four years after graduation. Today, Ben, born and raised in Pikesville, is a surgical podiatrist with We Treat Feet, operating in hospitals and offices throughout Baltimore and Carroll Counties. St. Louis native Nikki is a clinical social worker who primarily treats children and adolescents. Next year, she will bring her extensive clinical experience to Beth Tfiloh as the new Middle School guidance counselor. Nikki’s initial BT connection began when her sister, Negin Hariri, enrolled her oldest daughter, Jasmine, in BT
PreSchool 16 years ago. The ties grew from there. “My sister has been heavily involved with the school's PA over the years, I did one of my school internships at BT, and my mom (Soonia Raoofian) has been working in the PreSchool for almost 10 years,” says Nikki. Next school year, the Elgamils will have a total of five nieces and nephews attending BT School — from both sides of the family — plus their first BT alum. Shabbat is a very important time for the Elgamils, when their families gather for meals and special time together. Where they spend time on Shabbat before those meals had to be someplace equally special. The couple joined BT Synagogue in the summer of 2017, when their “smiley, adventurous baby,” Melody, was on her way. “We had just moved back from Philadelphia, where Ben was doing his residency, and knew it was time to set

“NICKY’S FAMILY” is a rich and beautifully shot docudrama about Sir Nicholas Winton, who without fanfare saved the lives of 669 children during the Nazi takeover of Czechoslovakia. His remarkable work was discovered and brought to life 50 years later when he was reunited with his “children.” (96 minutes)
