Start and finish the holidays on a high note
T
he arrival of the High Holy Days marks both a start and a finish… a beginning and an end. This is reflected in the words of our High Holy Day prayers: “Tichleh shono v’killoloso teichal shana u’birkoso – may the old year end with all its curses and may the New Year begin with all of its blessings.” Here at Beth Tfiloh we would like you to experience the High Holy Days from start to finish… from beginning to end. Our prayers for the High Holy Days begin with the Selichot service on Saturday evening, September 20 at 10:45 pm, proceeded by a reception welcoming Rabbi Jonathan and Miriam Gross. Our High Holiday services
come to an end with Neilah at the conclusion of Yom Kippur. In our synagogue, these two services have become the most meaningful, the most unique and the most rewarding. Hazzan Albrecht – joined by others – has added a joy, a beat to familiar melodies that engages all those present. We hope that you and your friends will be present as well. We are making these services open to the public … you don’t have to have a ticket, you don’t even have to be a member of Beth Tfiloh. You just have to want to start and finish the New Year on a high note.
Look for your copy of the Beth Tfiloh Experience later this month, with a complete calendar of outstanding programs for adults, families, and children of all ages.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
For Israel, IDF, BT Answers the Call August 7, 2014 As fellow alumni of Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School and veterans of the Israel Defense Forces, we want to thank Jordan Low for his exemplary service to Israel and wish him a full and speedy recovery from his injuries (“Ground Incursion Hits Home,” July 25). Since its inception, Beth Tfiloh has represented a beacon of high-quality academic education and intellectual stimulation that has become a cornerstone for the Baltimore Jewish community. BT not only prepares students for the rigors of advanced education but also equips them with an essential value system to succeed outside the classroom. As proof, BT boasts an impressive list of colleges and universities into whose ranks its graduates have matriculated as well as an equally remarkable number of alumni who have decided to risk life and limb to literally defend our values and fight for freedom, whether serving in the American military or the Israeli army. Jordan is but another example of the greatness that continues to come out of the hallways of Beth Tfiloh, and we are all honored to have him as a fellow alumnus. One of the best examples of the beauty of the BT family is Yad B’Yad (Hand in Hand), a chesed fund designed to help families in the Beth Tfiloh School community. Services and grants are provided to families who are dealing with unforeseen challenges, in an effort to alleviate some of their short-term stress. Support may come in the form of meals, help with carpools, gift cards for groceries and gas, and other aid. In order to assure privacy, all Yad B'Yad grants are allocated in
strict confidence. Other services are discretely provided only with the permission of the family involved. Two years ago, more than 450 Beth Tfiloh community members ran, walked or cheered on their friends at the bi-annual Yad B’Yad Mitzvah Miles 5k race, which raised more than $21,000 for the chesed fund. Save the date for the next Mitzvah Miles 5k, taking place this year on Sunday, April 26, 2015 at 8 am! But right now, we want to make sure that no needs are overlooked. If you know of anyone who might benefit from Yad B'Yad assistance, please contact Stacy Schwartz, Yad B’Yad Chair, at Lsschwartz@comcast.net. O’S BIG SCREEN BBQ – The Brotherhood sponsored a spirited Orioles Big Screen Night & Barbecue in the High School Crane Room. Everyone enjoyed rooting for the O’s and having a delicious cookout.

School News IDF soldier Jordan Low ‘12 (left), who was injured in Gaza, stands with members of his unit.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Alumni gather to support US lone soldier wounded in Gaza By YONAH JEREMY BOB ‘98 07/25/2014
Jordan Low hospitalized for smoke inhalation helping unit evacuate; Baltimore native’s father was stuck in France on redirected Delta flight. While Israel mourned the deaths of two American lone soldiers in the Gaza war this week, another Golani Brigade soldier, Baltimore native Jordan Low, was recovering from serious wounds he sustained in battle at The Rabin Medical Center-Beilinson Campus. Low, a sharpshooter in the IDF who has lived in Israel for about a year and is a 2013 graduate of the Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School in Baltimore, was hospitalized for smoke inhalation after helping soldiers from his 15-man unit escape from a burning building in northern Gaza on Sunday. The soldiers had been searching for weapons in Gaza when the building was hit by rockets. On news of his injuries, his Baltimore school’s Facebook page sprang into action, helping to connect alumni to Low’s story and location to show support. Among other visitors, the lone soldier received a group of well-wishing Beth Tfiloh graduates – with little to no connection to him. The school’s current students held a public recitation of psalms for his speedy recovery. During the visit, they brought Jordan words of encouragement, pastries and children’s drawings. However, due to his respiratory injuries, he was not able to talk much and most of the discussion was with his father, Jeffrey Low. During his short time at his son’s side, 10
Jeffery had been trying to discern the expected treatment plan and navigate the Israeli medical system in a medical culture that while sometimes overlaps with the US also can appear alien at times. Jeffery had not been there long, having had to switch to an El Al plane after originally boarding the Delta flight that was redirected to France mid-flight. “He’s my hero,” Jeffrey Low told The Baltimore Sun. “My two boys have learned to think about others before themselves.” Low and his second son, Joshua, flew to Israel on Monday night. His wife Suzanne died in 2010. Zipora Schorr, the Beth Tfiloh director of education, said: “The outpouring of support and love for Jordan has been astounding; we are all part of a family, and that’s what families do.” She added: “We are proud of all of our ‘children,’ graduates who have shown their love for Israel by joining the IDF, by making aliya, by being active members of Klal Yisrael [the people of Israel].” She said that graduates recognize the importance of a strong Israel and are “willing to put themselves and their lives on the line to prove it.”
UPDATE ON JORDAN LOW In late August, Jordan was released from the ICU into a step-down unit of the hospital and was expected to be soon released to a rehab unit of a different hospital. He is progressing nicely, and the family thanks everyone for all of their love and support during these difficult times.
Yonah Jeremy Bob ‘98, is a BT alumnus and is The Jerusalem Post’s legal affairs correspondent. He primarily writes about major Supreme Court decisions, significant criminal trials, constitutional issues and international law matters. Prior to the Post, he worked on hasbara and international security law issues in the IDF Legal Division, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Justice International Law Division. Yonah has been interviewed and provided legal analysis multiple times for both the BBC and Skynews. He is admitted as a lawyer in both the US and Israel and has practiced law for over seven years. Hailing from Baltimore in the US, Yonah graduated with honors from both Columbia University, receiving a BA, and Boston University, receiving a JD, where he focused his studies on international relations and international law. He lives in Modi’in with his wife and two children.
ATARA VOGELSTEIN ‘11 wrote a beautiful blog post in support of Israel for The Times of Israel, entitled, Is there an Israel beyond the conflict? She concludes her post with these sentiments: “I won’t say that this isn’t the real Israel. Because scorched Jerusalem stone is her reality, her value of human life is her pride, her innovation is her survival, her glory.” Atara serves as Director of Engagement of TorchPAC, the proIsrael advocacy club on campus at New York University, where she is a studying Drama, Creative Writing, and Psychology. What’s Your BT Story? The 2015 Annual Campaign Each of us has our own unique BT story – how we came to join the BT family and how it’s made a difference in our lives. Those stories illustrate why BT is so special to so many people, and why they are so committed to giving back to BT.

Diane Seegull and Sherry Mauer have their own BT stories to tell, and their stories are what inspired them to not only to support but also to lead Beth Tfiloh’s 2015 Annual Campaign.
“Through the amazing family friendships, great education and Jewish values, BT has impacted us in so many ways.”
“BT is a special place that I have known since I was a child and I am fortunate that my husband, Larry, quickly grew to love BT as well,” says Diane. “BT is where I have learned, and I continue to learn, so much about being a Jew and being part of a larger Jewish community. It is through the leaders of BT that I learned the importance of community service and supporting Israel. It is seeing the graduates of BT and their practicing of derech eretz that greatly influenced my desire to send our children to BT. Larry and I are thrilled

There are no ‘buts’ or ‘maybes.’ Beth Tfiloh is a place where we can feel good that everyone who walks in their doors is welcomed with open arms.” As Sherry’s youngest daughter approaches her senior year, she wants to educate others about how their Annual

can to ensure that BT continues to thrive. Larry and I always joke that we would consider moving to another city, but the one thing that holds us back is that another city wouldn’t have BT.”
Campaign participation is so crucial to BT’s future...and their own as well. “I want others to see, feel and understand how their financial support of Beth Tfiloh Congregation and School provides so much for our children, our families and the overall Jewish community in Baltimore – and even around the world, as our kids carry these values wherever they travel and end up!” For the Seegulls and Mauers, an Annual Campaign gift isn’t just a check that they write – it’s a promise to the entire BT community. “We don’t know another school or shul we would want our family to be a part of,” Diane notes. “The programming, education and diversity of BT are truly special. continue to assimilate and struggle to survive as a people,” shares Sherry. “I can’t imagine this community without Beth Tfiloh so I feel it’s my obligation to work to help others contribute to the campaign so we can survive and continue to thrive.” And that’s why they’ve taken on the important role of leading the 2015 Annual Campaign. Sherry, who has “never been a person to just sit back,” says that she is honored to have the opportunity to “help motivate others to give.” “It’s all about making a difference and knowing that everyone connected has the power to make a positive impact in his or her community,” says Diane. And when it comes down to it, it’s really our community that makes BT so special. “‘You Can Count on BT, Let BT Count on You’ is not just a slogan,” says Sherry. “BT will do its part, but that’s only possible if we help to provide the support and resources for it to continue. It’s a two-way street!” Diane agrees. “Whenever someone in the BT family is in need, we are there for each other. I have seen it many times. The BT community is truly amazing and takes to heart the meaning of “family” in every respect. I am proud to be part of BT.” Let BT count on you today. Development Corporation for Israel/Israel Bonds: Valued by Israel Support The State of Israel Bonds 5775 High Holy Days Campaign at Beth Tfiloh Congregation When David Ben Gurion founded the Israel Bonds organization in 1951 some of his closest collaborators were community leaders dedicated to the building and strengthening of the State of Israel. More than 60 years later that spirit thrives at Israel Bonds where one of its most valued assets is lay leaders – synagogue and community leaders; clergy and staff too who help organize the campaign, plan appeals/events, and more. Again this year, Howard Rosenblatt will chair Beth Tfiloh’s Israel Bonds appeal. Participating in an Israel Bonds High Holy Days Campaign means you stand beside a nation that sends a field hospital and a 148 member disaster relief team to the Philippines immediately following Typhoon Haiyan, is the only country in the world with more trees now than100 years ago, and at 66 years-old ranks 12th in the world in Nobel Prizes. Furthermore, 250 multinational countries maintain research facilities in Israel – 80 of them are Fortune 500 companies. Israel Bonds has helped Israel reach these milestones – your support for Israel Bonds will help Israel maintain its economic strength and grow its accomplishments. Prime Minister Netanyahu has repeated often what he said addressing a joint session of Congress two years ago, “Israel has no better friend than the US and the US has no better friend than Israel.” During this year’s High Holy Day Campaign join with other friends of Israel at Beth Tfiloh – and members of congregations across the country—who invest in Israel Bonds to show their support and love for Israel.

Israel Bonds also make great gifts for bar/bat mitzvahs and other life cycle events. eMITZVAH bonds, available at $36, $54, $72, $90 (exclusively online) and MAZEL TOV bonds ($100 and increments of $10) can be purchased anytime online. To learn more about eMITZVAH and MAZEL TOV bonds, or to set up an online account, go to www.israelbonds.com or send a message to baltimore@israelbonds.com. Once again, Hopkins Federal Savings Bank and The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore are partnering to make a 100% match on all Israel Bonds purchased during the High Holy Days appeal throughout the entire Baltimore community. Thanks to this generous match, every investment you make for Israel’s future will be worth twice its value. This is not an offering, which can be made only by prospectus. Read the prospectus carefully before investing to fully evaluate the risks associated with investing in Israel Bonds. Issues subject to availability. Member FINRA.
Shabbat and Yom Tov Home Hospitality Hachnasat Orchim (welcoming guests) is one of the first mitzvot mentioned in the Torah, based on the wonderful model of hospitality by Abraham and Sarah, who warmly welcomed unexpected guests to their tent, and generously provided them with a meal. With the approaching High Holiday, we encourage members of the Beth Tfiloh family to follow their beautiful example, and help provide a Shabbat or Yom Tov meal to those members of the BT family in need of hospitality. If you would like to host guests, or if you would like to share a Shabbat or Yom Tov meal with a BT host family, please contact Holly Venick at at hvenick@ btfiloh.org or 410-413-2244.
Beth Tfiloh Camps News Beth Tfiloh Camps continues its tradition of being the best summer experience a child can have. Our professional staff and exceptional facilities are the perfect combination for eight weeks of growth, skill development, and fun. This year our new Theater Camp was a smashing success, with two Showcases presented to family and friends. The Theater Camp was held in our new barn, outfitted with a stage, lights, and sound system, and the campers loved every minute. Our Ropes Course is always a hit, with two 60-foot towers giving campers the opportunity to climb to
the top and swing through the trees. Archery Tag is another unique activity that campers love. The Variety Show allows campers to show their talents to their friends. A special highlight is Carnival Day, with rides, games, and all-you-can-eat snowballs, cotton candy, and popcorn. Pictures of everything we do are posted daily on our website, btcamps.org. From the animals at Nature, to the Ravens and Orioles who visit Sports Camp, to the amusement parks our Travel Campers enjoy, Beth Tfiloh Camps is always hopping. Over 1,100 campers had a blast and can’t wait for next summer to do it all again!
