Give Me Just One Hour of Your Life

By Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg

The coming of a new year presents us with opportunities we’ve never had before. There are 8,760 hours in the coming year; I am asking you to give me one. There are many moments in the High Holy Day services that take on heightened meaning. The blowing of the shofar, the Musaf service, Kol Nidre, Yizkor all have great meaning and importance. But there is one hour that stands out. It is the hour of Neila – the final service of Yom Kippur day — that brings the holiest day of the year to a close. It is then, according to tradition, that the gates of heaven are closing and the final judgment for our destiny is being made.

Unfortunately, the timing of the Neila service is not very convenient. It comes late in the day when our stomachs are empty and our thoughts have turned to family and friends who are coming to break the fast with us. Indeed, when the final judgment is being made, the bagels and lox are already being devoured in many homes. I ask you to do me a favor and this year spend that final hour of Yom Kippur with me in the synagogue. There is no question in my mind that the Neila service at Beth Tfiloh is unsurpassed. The hazzan is surrounded by the rabbis, who in turn are all surrounded by the congregation to create one of the most inspiring, uplifting and, yes, entertaining moments of a lifetime. We join together Continued on p. 6

He has been involved in Jewish education for over a decade, teaching at institutions such as Yeshivat

Support The BT Israel Bonds High Holy Days Appeal Shortly after Israel became a state Prime Minster David Ben Gurion said, “Neither our security nor our future is safe, and there is not yet attained the main purpose of the State of Israel.” These words, spoken almost 70 years ago, are still true today. Investing in Israel bonds sends a message that you support a nation that: • Educates, builds, and innovates • Lives by democracy, liberty and human rights/freedoms for all people • Produces technologies and innovations that connect, feed, and heal the world (last year The Times of Israel reported, “more than one out of every four of the medicines, treatments and technologies in use today have Israeli roots)” Every investment no matter the amount declares: • Israel is our homeland to develop, visit and protect • Israel is our heritage, purpose, identity and responsibility Investment options begin at $100. Current terms range from 2-10 years, all bonds are issued in book-entry form (no certificates to store, lose, forget about or sign to redeem) and redemption checks are mailed automatically at maturity. Gift bonds are also available and are perfect for simchas or other occasions ($36, $54, $72, $90 – available only online). Do a double mitzvah by supporting Beth Tfiloh with an Israel bond or fulfill your ASSOCIATED pledge with an Israel bond. Inspired by our BT rabbis and the many BT members who have been leaders of Israel Bonds, we are proud that Beth Tfiloh is one of the top synagogues in the country in Israel Bonds sales. We thank BT member Robert Cohen, who is chairing this year’s Israel Bonds/Beth Tfiloh appeal. 14
