New Year 5779: Looking ahead to our 100th year You can feel the excitement in the air. New members from Winands Road Synagogue are being warmly welcomed. Young families are flocking to our Shabbat youth services each week. The Epstein Chapel and other shul facilities are getting a makeover. Our congregation, school and camp have never been stronger. Now in our congregation’s 98th year, Beth Tfiloh is building up to a muchanticipated centennial celebration. Committees of our lay leaders and professionals are planning a very special year to enable the entire BT family to be part of this most significant milestone in Beth Tfiloh’s illustrious history. But in the meantime, look forward to seeing more of the same great Jewish programming that has made Beth Tfiloh unique on the American Jewish

scene: inspiring Shabbat and holiday services, our acclaimed preschool, day school, Hebrew school and camp; amazing youth programs for babies through teens; outstanding Mercaz Dahan adult education classes; outreach to our alumni and young adults; and a special warmth and joy that attracts and enriches the lives of members of all ages and from so many levels of observance. You will find the highlights of the coming year in the BETH TFILOH EXPERIENCE, included with this Bulletin. But don’t just take our word for it — take the time to EXPERIENCE BETH TFILOH for yourself in the coming year. You will discover the excitement and joy that is part of this very special community. BT Men Introducing #BTMen “In a place where there are no men... strive to be a man.” - Ethics of the Fathers For over 70 years, the Beth Tfiloh Brotherhood has been a vibrant force for good in our synagogue and community. Proceeds from our Donor and programs help support the outstanding success Beth Tfiloh has had in raising our children to be good Jews. At the same time, the Brotherhood has created a wonderful spirit of camaraderie among its members. Part of the success of the Brotherhood has been a willingness to be realistic and make changes when necessary. In the spirit of change and growth, the Brotherhood has gone through a rebranding process and will now be called #BTMen. The name change signifies that some things will be different, and some will remain the same. Our major focus will be on: • Events throughout the year, including our premier event: Men’s Night • Chanukah celebration • Blood Drive • Pre-Pesach Men’s Night with clergy • Holiday gift packages for college students • AED/CPR training for our High School students In addition, #BTMen is taking charge of our Shabbat Kiddush Club, hoping to bring more of a feeling of fellowship and friendship among the men of our congregation. #BTMen is assuming the financial assets and responsibilities that the Brotherhood maintained so successfully. We owe a genuine debt of gratitude to all the men who served as leaders over the years and devoted so much time and effort because they cared about Beth Tfiloh. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Larry Abramson or Steve Venick at: BTMen@btfiloh.org. Remember: “In a place where there are no men… strive to be #BTMen.”

School News

Israel Shinshinim Build Bridges from BT to Israel Beth Tfiloh students don’t just learn about Israel; they live Israel, thanks to our Israeli shinshinim. Shinshinim are 18 year-old Israeli emissaries who share and connect their country’s rich culture, history and ruach (spirit) with our BT community. This year, we welcome shinshinim Yael Israeli and Yonatan Kantrowitz. A native of TzurHadassah, near Jerusalem, Yael lives with her two brothers and her parents. During high school, she majored in art, allowing her to explore ideas expressed through art, and in Arabic, to prepare for the IDF’s intelligence corps. Yael says she volunteered as a shinshina to serve her country and her nation. Through her service, Yael hopes to learn first-hand about “the culture and daily routine of a Jewish community,” and to explore “the differences between their lives and life in Israel.” She believes that this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity will prepare her for her future while allowing her to connect and unite diaspora Jews and those in Israel.

11-year tenure at BT Camps and begins his new position at The Associated. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to David Schimmel for his exemplary leadership, during which time we saw a significant growth in camp enrollment, and many new camp programs and facilities. Those of us who worked with David will miss his enthusiasm, his positive energy, and his commitment to program excellence. We look forward to seeing David at BT where he will continue as a day school parent and a member of our congregation. We also extend our appreciation to the members of the Search Committee for their time spent interviewing and 8

evaluating many outstanding, highly qualified candidates over the course of the summer. BT Camps is proud to be one of the most popular Jewish day camps in the region. We thank our entire camp administration and staff for making this summer another outstanding and memorable one for our more than 1,000 campers this year. We are confident that under Mike’s leadership, BT Camps will continue its 75 year tradition of camping excellence, with the area’s best program, staff and facilities, in a fun-filled, Jewish atmosphere.

Yonatan, who majored in physics and chemistry in high school, was previously a member of the Tzofim Friendship Caravan that toured the US last summer. He also participated in Chetz V’Keshet, an immersive Israel summer program for American teens and their Israeli peers. Like Yael, Yonatan hopes to strengthen the Israeli-American Jewish bond while here in Baltimore. Both shinshinim will work with Mr. Dani Steiner, High School Judaics, Jewish history and Hebrew language teacher and Israeli shaliach, and Mrs. Ayelet Koren-Steiner, Middle School Hebrew teacher and advisor. Together they will create special Israel experiences for BT students and faculty members throughout the school.

Synagogue News New Yahrzeit reminders to be sent via email One of the long-held traditions of Judaism is the importance of perpetuating the memory of parents, spouses, siblings, grandparents and other family members by observing the Hebrew anniversary of their death, or yahrzeit (which means “time of year” in Yiddish). Beth Tfiloh Congregation members currently receive Yahrzeit notices via mail to provide timely reminders of family members’ yahrzeits, together with the date and time of services, a request for alliyot, and sponsorship opportunities to honor their memory. In addition to mailed yahrzeit notices, BT members will now be receiving additional yahrzeit reminders via email, as part of our congregation’s efforts to be more “user friendly” and to make use of electronic communication. While the printed notices will continue to be sent approximately one month prior to a yahrzeit, the e-mail notices will be sent approximatley one week prior to a yahrzeit, to serve as a second reminder. If you wish to add or update your e-mail address to your Beth Tfiloh membership account, please contact Ilana Dinnerman, Membership Coordinator, at 410413-2205 or idinnerman@btfiloh.org. For questions about your family’s yahrzeit records, please contact Mona Kaufman at 410-413-2211 or mokaufman@btfiloh.org.
