Doesn’t your college student deserve a BT Holiday Gift Package?

B'nei Mitzvah Program

In an effort to maintain ties with our young adults, Beth Tfiloh is pleased to again offer a series of complimentary holiday packages, gifts and materials for college students. The mailings correspond this year with Chanukah and Pesach and are made possible through the generosity of the Beth Tfiloh Brotherhood.

Planning is now underway for the scheduling of Bar and Bat Mitzvah dates for children born between September 1, 2005 and August 31, 2006. Parents must be members of the Congregation in good standing in order for their child to be eligible to become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah at Beth Tfiloh. School News Rabbi Mordechai Soskil returns to BT to head High School Judaics After a brief (three year) hiatus from the hallowed halls of Beth Tfiloh, 14-year BT veteran Rabbi Mordechai Soskil has returned home from Boston to his Baltimore family. After previously serving as a Judaics teacher and Middle School principal here at BT, Rabbi Soskil has graduated to High School as the new Judaics Head. An important part of his role is a renewed focus on fostering our students’ Jewish growth by helping them find relevance in their tefilah (daily prayers), and through programming developed in conjunction with Mrs. Rachel LevittKlein, Director of Student Life. Says Rabbi Soskil, “Some of my favorite memories of my time at Beth Tfiloh are of Shabbatonim and other programming that I think are such an important part of making the teaching of Judaism fresh, relevant and personally meaningful.” Other aspects of his role include mentoring Talmud and Rabbinics teachers; evaluating the school’s current Judaic studies offerings to determine whether they are meeting all their goals, “particularly in regards to student engagement;” ensuring that all Judaics studies faculty members are using “industry standard best practices in their teaching;” and, of course, teaching. Rabbi Soskil is excited to return to the BT classrooms, which provide the perfect environment for his teaching

approach. “I’m always thinking about how to craft classes that allow for students’ voices to be heard and also allow me to present authentic, traditional Jewish sources,” he says. “I love it when students can be the creators of learning and not just consumers of teaching.” During his time in Boston, Rabbi Soskil accrued some impressive accomplishments, such as completing YU Lead, Yeshiva University’s school leadership certificate program; completing his first half marathon; finishing Shas (the entire Talmud); and getting a hug from Lord Rabbi Jonathan Sacks (“true story!”). As Judaic Studies Principal for the middle and upper school at Maimonides Academy, he implemented an enhanced advisory program and a Judaic studies elective program, all while building “some really great relationships with students and teachers” there. We are excited to bring Rabbi Soskil’s energy, humor, enthusiasm and passion for Jewish education back to BT!

PreSchool enrollment begins for Fall 2016 Beth Tfiloh PreSchool has earned a reputation as one of the premier early childhood programs in the area. As our PreSchool continues to grow and attract new families, we must limit enrollment to ensure the individual attention and high quality of our program. We therefore strongly encourage members of the Beth Tfiloh family to complete applications early in order to guarantee their place in our PreSchool for Fall 2016. From October 1 to November 15, we are offering Preferred Enrollment for existing BT school families and synagogue members using our online form at bethtfiloh.com/admission. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis, with BT school families and synagogue members who apply before November 15 given preferential enrollment. For more information contact. Melissa Lebowitz, PreSchool Director, at 410-413-2554.

Development News LEAP OF FAITH:

The Faith and Edward Wolf Family Scholarship Fund When Ed and Faith Wolf moved to Baltimore in 1983 for his Johns Hopkins fellowship, their first stop was at the Knish Shop, where they were directed “authoritatively” to Beth Tfiloh on Torah Drive. “We were thrilled…there was Beth Tfiloh – a shul very much like the one we both grew up attending on Long Island,” says Faith. “It’s the best thing we ever did!”

from Josh’s years at BT to Gideon’s graduation in 2010, watching BT flourish into a “major preparatory school able to take its place next to such local independent school icons as Gilman, McDonough and Park Schools,” as Faith describes, from the “state-ofthe-art, cutting-edge classrooms and technology,” enjoyed by Shoshi and Brian’s children, Sarina ‘27 and Caleb ‘29, to the impressive list of awards and medals accorded to both BT athletes and performers.

But with all these many improvements at BT, one thing remains constant: the core values of “derech eretz, Torah and community involvement, which have remained the pillars upon which BT stands,” comments Shoshi. That explains why the Wolfs feel “wonderful and grateful” that Shoshi and Brian’s children, are now following in their parents’ footsteps. It was because of their own experiences as BT students that Shoshi and Brian chose The Wolf Family (l to r) - Ariel Wolf ‘01, Dr. Joshua Wolf ‘98, Faith & Dr. Edward Wolf, Shoshi Ponczak ‘03, Gideon Wolf ‘10 to send their children to BT, where both of them made to discuss transferring their sons, Josh lifelong friends. “BT is not just a school— ‘98 and Ariel ‘01, to Beth Tfiloh. Mrs. it’s a way of life. I want my children to Schorr ensured them that she would create those lasting friendships,” she “address [their] children’s academic says. and spiritual needs with her entire heart The Wolfs are long-time active BT and soul—that they would grow and be volunteers and leaders. Faith both nurtured and educated and be part of served on and led a variety of School a continuing vision that she and Rabbi and Congregation committees, while Ed Wohlberg were inculcating at Beth established and facilitated the Science Tfiloh.” After adjusting to their new Symposium, matching mentors with environment, the Wolf children “found aspiring student scientists, which was an incredible home in Beth Tfiloh… founded in memory of Faith’s father, and we never looked back,” says Faith, Stuart Schreiber. But they were not enrolling their other children, Shoshi ‘03 content to leave their involvement and Gideon ‘10, as they reached school behind. age. “We wanted to ensure BT’s future for “There is an incredible bond that links our grandchildren and other children all graduates of this school,” says Faith, who deserve, but might not be in a as demonstrated by the Wolf’s four BT position to afford such a unique and alumni, two of whom have married other quality education,” expresses Ed. giving back to the school that provided so much to all of their children. Their fund will become a permanent source for scholarships for many generations of students – no gift could be more important. “My parents always emphasized the importance of education and it seems natural for them to help other children experience a Beth Tfiloh education like their children did,” says Shoshi proudly. “Every child should have a chance to attend Beth Tfiloh and be a part of the BT family—finances should never prohibit anybody from getting a fabulous education.” The Ponczaks are continuing the Wolf family legacy of generosity by supporting BT philanthropically and through volunteering. Shoshi, who is an active member of the Parent Association, Marketing Committee and chaired the successful Mitzvah Miles race this past spring, feels that “it’s important to give back to the place that made me who I am today and to help ensure that it stays there for the future, for my children and, God willing, my grandchildren.” Their scholarship is a personal and heartfelt expression of gratitude “to Beth Tfiloh and especially to Mrs. Schorr for keeping that promise so many years ago,” says Faith. “We know you will provide that same nurturing commitment to those children who will benefit from our scholarship fund.” KADIMA LEGACY SOCIETY The Kadima Legacy Society recognizes members of the Beth Tfiloh family who have made outright gifts to the school or synagogue, endowments or made arrangements to make a legacy gift to Beth Tfiloh as an expression of their commitment to the future of our community. The future financial security of Beth Tfiloh lies in the strength and growth of our endowments. For more information on creating your legacy at Beth Tfiloh and joining the 125 members of the Kadima Legacy Society, please contact Mandi Miller at (410) 4132399 or mmiller@btfiloh.org.

Development News NO PLACE SHE’D RATHER BE: Meet Annual Campaign Chair Sherry Mauer

Sherry Mauer (right) with husband Joshua Mauer and daughters, Hannah ‘13 and Olivia ‘15.

This year’s Beth Tfiloh Annual Campaign Chair, Sherry Mauer, has a long and impressive BT resume: Kadima Society member, along with husband Josh, making a joint legacy gift to Beth Tfiloh; Alumni parent (Hannah ’13 and Olivia ’15); chairing numerous events, including Spotlight, BT’s annual scholarship event; active Annual Campaign volunteer and cabinet member; Parent ambassador and lifelong Congregation member. It was only fitting that someone so involved with and dedicated to the mission and success of Beth Tfiloh should spearhead the Annual Campaign…the lifeblood of our school and synagogue.

will continue for generations to come.

there’s no place I’d rather be!

Why is the Annual Campaign so important for Beth Tfiloh?

Your daughters have both graduated. Why chair the BT Annual Campaign now?

Without the Annual Campaign, Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School could not provide the top-notch academics, athletics, arts, and numerous other programs enjoyed by our students today; Beth Tfiloh Congregation could not continue to provide the plethora of programs, speakers, top notch educators, variety of religious services and so much more. The cost of school tuition and synagogue memberships do not cover the total costs needed to keep BT up and running. The Annual Campaign is what makes it possible for BT to serve as an anchor for Jewish life in Baltimore—

I feel a responsibility to continue to give back to the place that has meant so much to the growth and development of our children and our family, giving us all a strong Jewish foundation. I want Beth Tfiloh to be around and to be strong for the next generation to be able to benefit as we have – that is only possible with a strong, successful annual campaign! Make your gift today To donate to the Beth Tfiloh Annual Campaign, visit bethtfiloh.com/ annualcampaign, or call 410-413-2233.

But where does that passion and dedication come from? Sherry explains: What does the BT community mean to your family?

Beth Tfiloh Annual Campaign

The BT community has ALWAYS been such an important part of our family’s lives. The school provided both an incredible secular and Jewish education to both of our daughters, from PreSchool through High School graduation…and beyond. It has given our family a continued connection to our Judaism, not just through the school and congregation, but from the families that have become our dearest friends for life. BT provides something different to each of us as it does for so many in the Baltimore community. I have been connected to Beth Tfiloh since birth as my parents and siblings grew up in the halls of Beth Tfiloh, a tradition that I hope

The Beth Tfiloh Teen Minyan By Liora Schlesinger What’s so special about a few slices of avocado? It’s an easy thing to throw together - cut the avocado in half, slice it into slivers, then just dress it with salt, pepper, a splash of fresh lemon juice. I mean it when I say how simple all this is. But according to my fifteen year old son’s friends, who he brings over to our home after Teen Minyan at shul, this dish is highly delicious. Our family joined the Beth Tfiloh community only a little over a year ago, when we moved to Pikesville. Back in Pittsburgh, Ben, my youngest son, the last of my children still in grade school, grumbled and complained to my husband, Ed and me, a manifestation of his very real nervousness about moving to a new place, a new school, and an entirely different group of kids at the Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School, with whom he was tasked to become friends. On the issue of moving to a new community ourselves, we put on a brave face, of course, for his sake. Ben’s fears were unfounded–like anyone his age would, he quickly adapted to the new environment. He began to attend Teen Minyan, a service on Saturday for high schoolage kids, which involves significant student participation. Here, Ben has become happy and comfortable enough to read Torah every three weeks. He has a schedule during the weeks between readings, when he calls his grandfather on Skype each

day to study the words and tropes of each pasuk, or verse. After the minyan and their kiddush luncheon, Ed, Ben and Liora nearly every Schlesinger Saturday, when they are not hanging out at someone else’s house, Ben and his friends come to our home to play sports outside in the summer, hunch over board games in the winter, and eat lunch, including avocado, year round. By reaching into and positively influencing Ben’s interactions at home, Teen Minyan is a true Chavurah , a word that translates as ‘fellowship’ but that means much more. It is a force for good in Ben’s experiences at his new school and synagogue, and completely analogous to the experience that Ed and I are having here at BT. There actually is a secret to serving avocado that I did not mention before –choosing the best and ripest one. When we were looking for a house here in Baltimore, we gave our realtor a rather restricting set of parameters. We had to be close to Ed’s new work, but also close to a school for Ben, as well as walking distance from a certain kind of synagogue–one which is traditional and Orthodox, but also accepting, open, nonjudgemental. I like to think we picked right.
