Simchat Torah is a wonderful time for all of us to celebrate and get “up close and personal” with the Torah. Again this year, the women of BT will have a special opportunity to both read from the Torah and have an aliyah on Friday morning, October 13. While reading Torah may take some time to learn and prepare, having an aliyah requires no previous experience! We welcome all women, teens and young girls to become a part of this Beth Tfiloh tradition, which was initiated several years ago. We are looking for Torah readers as well as gabbayot who can help women when they have their aliyot. We welcome women of all ages – from Bat Mitzvah girls to their bubbies – to be a

Why Learn Torah Trop? By Rabbanit Bracha Jaffe Our mesora (tradition) is what connects us with our past and binds us to our future. It has carried us over millennia; it grounds us and roots us. day at BT PreSchool’s 2’s program with a birthday celebration, decorating party hats and blowers. “They LOVE the BT playground, Shabbat with their friends, Morah Cindy, and all the games and crafts in their classroom,” says Jen.

Daniel Schmerling’s BT connection goes back to high school, where he commuted to BT from Annapolis and graduated in 2004. His wife, Jen, fell in love with BT more recently while attending Mommy and Me classes with their twin daughters, Amelia ’33 and Gabby ’33. The family joined BT synagogue last spring.

Last year, Dan’s high school friends Vicki ‘05 and Jesse ’04 Hervitz invited the Schmerlings to join them at BT’s Cookie Minyan, a Shabbat service designed specifically for infants through 3 year-olds. “Our girls loved playing with their friends, singing Shabbat songs, and holding plush Torahs,” Jen shares. Since then, they’ve started participating in more BT children’s programming, including Cookie Minyan Shabbat lunches and PreSchool pre-Shabbat dinners.

Dan, an industrial and organizational psychologist at Capital One, still plays basketball twice a week with his fellow BT alumni. Jen, a lower school learning specialist at Gilman School, is pursuing a doctorate at George Washington University, researching educational policy and administration. When not at BT, the Schmerling family loves spending time together outdoors — everything from day trips to local parks to weekend beach trips.

The Schmerling twins (who actually have different birthdays—August 31st and September 1st) kicked off their first

Why Learn Trop

Rabbi Yoggev’s focus will be toward engaging young professionals. He will lecture and teach classes at college campuses and downtown events, as well as in coffee houses and congregants’ homes. Other events for young professionals in which he will be involved will include a Sukkah Bash on October 10th, co-sponsored with B’nai Israel Congregation, and the everpopular Shabbat Project on the Shabbat of October 27-28.

Continued from page 10

Beginning after the holidays, as part of the Mercaz Fall Semester, Rabbi Yoggev will teach a four-part lecture series titled “Kabbalah and the Modern Experience” in which he will explore, in an interactive manner, the intersection between Kabbalah and modernity—psychology, yoga/meditation, and issues related to gender. Rabbi Yoggev will also teach Bible at Beth Tfiloh High School. Come and hear Rabbi Yoggev at any of these classes or during his regular classes and Divrei Torah on weekdays and Shabbat and see what the positive buzz is all about.

We warmly welcome Dan, Jen, Amelia and Gabby to the BT family.

The second layer is the trop or cantillation marks. Here’s a little-known fact – the trop plays three different roles: • how to sing the words • where the emphasis is on the words • how to parse the verses. The tune changes from community to community: Moroccan, Yemenite, Spanish-Portuguese, Ashkenazic. There are different tunes for Haftorah reading and Megilot. There is even a very special tune for reading the Torah on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. Knowing the 11

Hurricane Relief Efforts BT Coach Ari Braun (standing, 4th from the left) volunteered with a team from Baltimore to provide hands-on assistance in cleanup and recovery from hurricane Harvey. BT Middle School students helped members of Baltimore Yachad — Jewish children and adults with disabilities — raise money for victims of Hurricane Harvey. They will send the funds to Houston Yachad to distribute among schools in that area. BT High School’s Stars and Stripes committee raised more than $600 through their own fundraiser, which was sent to The Associated’s Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. To contribute, visit associated.org.
