Celebrating the Joy of Judaism, Embracing all Jews. CHESHVAN-KISLEV 5778 NOVEMBER 2017

Giving Thanks: Once a Year or Once a Day? By Rabbanit Bracha Jaffe, Beth Tfiloh Community Educator November comes around and our thoughts turn to family gatherings: turkey, stuffing and pumpkin pie. Thanksgiving is a time to pause and reflect on what we are thankful for in our lives. “Expressing thanks may be one of the simplest ways to feel better.” (Harvard Health Letter) Judaism knows all about the power of gratitude. A favorite prayer we teach our young children to say to God first thing in the morning is Modeh Ani – I offer thanks [to You]. Modeh Ani gives thanks to God for believing in us

and returning our souls to our bodies every morning. It is our opportunity to take a quiet moment and gather our thoughts in preparation for the day awaiting us, channeling our energies into positive thoughts of gratefulness and thankfulness. Thanksgiving is a once-a-year event; a time to give thanks on a grand scale with much anticipation and preparation, celebrating with friends and family. Jewish tradition offers us a quieter and more private spiritual practice that is accessible to everyone, allowing us to connect to ourselves and to Gd every morning. Here are two ways to give thanks each morning: the traditional Modeh Ani prayer and a kavannah (intention) that was inspired by this ancient liturgy:

Modeh ani lifanecha melech chai v’kayam shehechezarta bi nishmahti b’chemlah rabah emunatecha. I gratefully thank you, O living and eternal King, for You have returned my soul within me, with compassion. Abundant is your faithfulness.

In these still, quiet moments, I am not asleep and not yet awake. In the threshold of day and night, with the mixture of darkness and light, my body is once again coming to life. I am reborn, each day, from the womb of your compassion. May all of my actions be worthy of the faith You’ve placed in me. With words of thanks I’ll greet the dawn. - Andrew Shaw

PreSchool enrollment opens for Fall 2018

Sukkot @BT

BT PreSchool will offer Priority Enrollment for fall 2018 classes for current BT school families and BT synagogue members through November 15. Parents can register online at bethtfiloh.com/admissions. BT families will be given priority prior to November 15, when enrollment will be open to the general public. Due to the high demand for our PreSchool, BT families are urged to enroll prior to November 15. Thank you to all the BT women who joined Rabbanit Bracha Jaffe for a spiritual evening of singing with musical accompaniment by Shelley Kaye, learning and celebrating a new year at Body and Soul, and to the BT Young Professionals who tasted scotch poured by Steve Venick, ate steak hors d’oeuvres and mingled at Steak & Scotch in the Sukkah!

For more information, contact Mrs. Melissa Lebowitz, PreSchool Director, 410-413-2554, or email mlebowitz@btfiloh.org.

Meet our Members Meet the Roffman Family As a young girl, Dr. Nancy (Holzman) Roffman ‘02 and her cousins would approach Rabbi Wohlberg every Shabbat and wish him a good Shabbos. Rabbi Wohlberg promptly produced lollipops to make their Shabbat extra sweet. Today, Nancy and her husband, Dan, watch their three children (who all attend BT PreSchool) enjoy that same weekly experience. “We are grateful to know that our children will come home from shul sugared up and wanting to come back for more each week,” laughed Nancy. Nancy’s BT connection predates her childhood. Her zayde, Irvin Fishbein, joined BT more than 50 years ago, served as the shul’s president from 2001-2003, and at the age of 95 still regularly attends services. In addition to spending Shabbat and Chagim at BT Synagogue, Nancy is a Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School “lifer,” attending from PreSchool through High School. She also spent her summers at BT Camps, first as a camper and then as a counselor. But there’s another reason why BT is special for the Roffmans: “It is where we got married,” shared Dan.

“Once we moved to the area in 2014 from Chicago, we started attending Shabbat services at BT on a regular basis,” he adds. “Our twin boys and our daughter have grown accustomed to attending shul with Nancy's parents, Poppi and Nana (Debi and Mark Holzman), Super Zayde (Nancy’s grandfather, Irvin Fishbein), cousins and aunt and uncle. It is really special having four generations together at BT on Shabbat and holidays.” Their kids are following in their mother’s footsteps right into BT’s PreSchool where they are all students. Outside of BT, Nancy is a licensed psychologist and the director of a private psychology practice in Pikesville. Dan, a managing director at FTI Consulting, a global business advisory firm. A computer forensic investigation specialist, he offers consulting and expert testimony on matters involving the theft of trade secrets, fraud, and investigations.

“We are both avid football fans (Dan is an Eagles fan, but no one is perfect),” Nancy comments, which explains why their kids are often found wearing Ravens purple or Eagles green on most Sundays. The Roffmans also spend a lot of time with family—in Pikesville, Philadelphia, at the Jersey Shore, and in Boston. “Locally, we enjoy going to museums, farms, or the library. Even going to the food store is an exciting adventure at this stage of our lives,” she says. We are delighted to have another generation of the Fishbein and Holzman family as members of our BT family! 5

Development News Russel Family sponsors Challenge Grant to double impact of new and increased gifts Beth Tfiloh is proud to announce the Russel Family Challenge Grant, which matches all NEW and INCREASED gifts to the 2018 Beth Tfiloh Annual Campaign. This generous grant is being made possible by Irene and Robert Russel and the Ronnie & Alli Russel Charitable Foundation. Irene and Robert Russel have been connected to Beth Tfiloh for more than 40 years. Their children, David Russel and Becky Brenner, attended the school before there was a high school and two of the Russels’ grandchildren are currently attending BT High School. The Russels also have strong connections to the congregation, and are regular Shabbat worshippers. “BT is a very special and welcoming place,” Robert says. “More than half of our life has included BT and it has had a great impact on us.” The Russels’ motivation for creating the Russel Family Challenge Grant was also influenced by Robert's involvement in the school leadership, having chaired the school’s Financial Aid Committee. “For many years I've been very familiar with the school’s need for philanthropic dollars so I'm quite aware of what is involved in operating the school financially,” expalined Robert. “We are long-time supporters of the Annual Campaign and know how important our contribution and others contributions are to keeping Beth Tfiloh strong. By sponsoring the Challenge Grant we aim to double our impact.” Irene added, “Beth Tfiloh is our home away from home. We are very excited about motivating others to make first-time or increased gifts to the campaign.”
