Memories from Simchat Torah

This year’s High Holiday season was brought to a spirited conclusion with the joyous celebration of Simchat Torah. Beginning with evening Hakafot and continuing the next day, this festive yom tov was truly outstanding from every possible angle. There were so many memorable moments -- fathers helping their sons carry a Torah during Hakafot, Kol Fusion’s beautiful Hallel, children dancing with ruach, the women’s Hakafot in the Tuvin Hall, dancing in the Sukkah, multiple generations of women hugging after emotional alliyot in the women’s Torah reading, the throng of children gathered under a giant talit for the Kol Ne’arim children’s alliyah, special Torah honors, and on and on. Here are some of our members’ favorite moments from Simchat Torah: “I loved how when we were dancing— friends pulled other friends into the dancing circle and you got to meet new people. I also loved how my friends, family, and I knew the brachot for an Aliyah and got to say our own Aliyah.” – Naomi (5th grade) “The celebration was just tremendous. I didn’t expect to receive the Chassan B’reishis honor on behalf of the new

I was overwhelmed with joy at having the opportunity to share this precious moment with her. Shelley Kaye, who did the leyning so beautifully, added

to this meaningful experience. I believe it was an awesome memory for all of us.” – Rozzie Taylor “We were very surprised and honored to receive this special [Chattan B’reishit] honor. place to daven and the camaraderie is a important part of our lives.” – Benny and Jen Sobol “My favorite memory from Simchas Torah was dancing and seeing my friends. I loved getting an Aliyah with my mom and friends because I love the Torah.” – Lucy (3rd grade) “I felt honored as well as speechless [to receive the Chattan Torah honor on behalf of the Brotherhood]. The Brotherhood has meant a lot to Beth Tfiloh Congregation and I have personally worked and enjoyed being on the Board and as being president. I was truly touched.” – Rick Goldsmith “For me and for most of the other women, the opportunity to leyn was inspirational and transformative. Several others have told me that they would like to learn to do it next year, too. For some, having an aliyah brought them, and the rest of us around the table, to tears.” – Shelley Kaye

NOVEMBER 2018 A CHESHVAN-KISLEV 5779 “On Simchat Torah, I was humbled to be honored [as Chattan Torah], but at the same time swept up in the happiness and joy of pure simcha that we have experienced regularly and continually since returning to Baltimore and BT.” – David Gitlitz “Dancing with the Torah, leyning and receiving an Aliyah (and watching women become emotional over receiving their first Aliyah), and even leading one of the Hakafot

with a group of women, was truly an amazing experience. And the kids … you have helped instill an ongoing love of Judaism and the holidays in my children. Thank you for making Simchat Torah an unbelievable experience for my family.” – Rivka Bresler

Meet Our Members

BT Young Professionals

Michael and Leia Zeitlin Michael and Leia Zeitlin are so excited to be part of the BT community along with their children: Jay, 7 (formerly Jonah), Riva, who is almost 5, and Noah, almost 2. The Zeitlins relocated to Pikesville from Baltimore’s Federal Hill neighborhood in late January. “It wasn’t the easiest decision to leave our downtown community but it was the right move for our family,” says Leia. “Our children attend Krieger Schechter Day School and The Goldsmith Center for Early Childhood Education. Most of their friends and activities are based in this area and while they miss being so close to the Inner Harbor, parks and museums, they’ve really embraced life in the ‘burbs. It also helps that we’ve made the most amazing friends at BT and in our neighborhood,” she adds. Michael is a contractor who provides IT solutions to government clients via his consulting company. He is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University with a degree in computer engineering. Leia is a senior project manager at Jellyfish Digital Agency and holds a BA in Media Arts from Emerson College in Boston, and a Master of Science in informations systems from UMBC. “All of our children love attending services at BT and, when not in their minyanim, can usually be found hunting for candy in the halls,” said Leia.

The Zeitlins enjoy reading books, watching movies, playing dress up and attending services and programs at BT, adding, “Our family can often be found on the playground or visiting with friends on Shabbat.” The Zeitlins have truly found their home at Beth Tfiloh, as Leia describes: “BT is the example that every Jewish community should strive towards. We are especially impressed with how much care and thought BT puts into every event, and bringing joy to being Jewish. The clergy and staff are incredibly dedicated and have made our family feel not only welcome but completely embraced by the BT family.”

Meet our Synagogue Life Committee If you want to know what’s really going on at BT, just ask any member of Beth Tfiloh’s Synagogue Life Committee. Now in its fourth year, the committee was formed under the leadership of Holly Venick, Director of Synagogue Life, as a central hub of BT Congregation, with the goal to strengthen our shul membership through increased engagement in all aspects of synagogue life. The committee’s roster of over 30 members is chaired by Vered Taylor. Bess Gilden serves as vice chair and Shelley Kaye is liaison to the Executive Committee. All entities under the BT umbrella have a representative, including religious services, Mercaz, the BT Minyan, new members, empty nesters, each school division, BT Hebrew School, BT Camp, BT Men, the Sisterhood, BT Cares, development, alumni and BT Young Professionals. Synagogue Life members share information about their BT entities and also serve as strong advocates for BT Synagogue, as well as the overall BT

family. “There is always tremendous enthusiasm at our meetings,” says Holly Venick, who staffs the committee. “Even though we only meet four times a year, Synagogue Life Committee members are having a high impact in terms of engagement.” Recommendations from the committee are referred to the board of directors of the Congregation to take into considering for new programming and budgeting.

One of the roles of the committee is to reach out to newly joined and prospective new members to welcome them and make them feel a part of the BT community. With a record synagogue membership of over 1,300 families and an 80 percent increase in young members, our Synagogue Life Committee most definitely receives high marks for its outstanding efforts. 7
