Chanukah Trivia: Eight Fun Facts for the Festival of Lights By Rabbanit Bracha Jaffe, Beth Tfiloh Community Educator Chanukah is our winter festival filled with light and latkes, gifts and gelt. Here are eight fun facts, one for each night of the Chanukah holiday: 1. We light one candle for the first night, two candles for the second night and so on until the eighth night when we fill the menorah with eight lights. This seems natural and obvious to us. However, this was the source of a dispute between Tana’itic sages. While we follow Beit Hillel’s opinion to add a candle every night, Beit Shammai held the opposite. They thought that we should start with eight candles and decrease the number each night!

2. In Israel the letters on the dreidel are oa vhv kusd xb — a great miracle happened here. Outside of Israel the letters are: vp vhv kusd xb — a great miracle happened there.

Guests, Visitors and Prospective New Members are welcome

3. A menorah is lit in our synagogues to publicize the miracle of Chanukah. We placed the menorah on the southern wall – just like the menorah in the Temple. 4. Erev Shabbat Chanukah feels like the shortest Friday of the year. Not only does the sun set very early, we need to gather everyone and light Chanukah candles before Shabbat candles! That’s why our sages tell us to save singing Ma’oz Tzur until the Shabbat meal! 5. Purim and Chanukah are our two major rabbinic holidays. Yet there is a profound difference between them. The Purim gragger is spun from the bottom, symbolizing the Jews’ prayers and entreaties to God to save the day. The

dreidel, on Chanukah, is spun from the top, signifying God’s showering us with miracles even without our prayers! 6. While Purim has a megillah that was canonized in our Bible, Chanukah does not. Yet there is a book called Sefer HaMaccabim – Maccabees I - that was written by an observant Jewish soldier and contains a lot of the stories that we know about Chanukah today. 7. Spinning the dreidel started when students were illegally studying Torah, forbidden by the Greeks. Whenever the Greek soldiers made a surprise visit, the students would quickly whip out their dreidels and pretend to gamble. Perhaps that is why we play dreidel with money today! 8. In Israel there are over 100 children’s songs about Chanukah! jna vfubj – A freilichin Chanukah!

Meet our Members Ezra and Courtney Hercenberg Ezra and Courtney Hercenberg moved from Baltimore’s Fells Point neighborhood to Pikesville this past April specifically to become part of the BT school and shul community. “We have met a lot of great people since moving here and are very happy we made the decision to move—even though we did enjoy living down in the city,” says Courtney. The move provided their 2 year-old son, Ethan, who started in BT PreSchool’s 2’s program this fall, with many more playdate opportunities and kid-friendly activities. “We wanted more of a Jewish community than we had downtown,” she adds. Ezra owns and runs a general contracting company that operates mostly in Washington DC, building high-end multi-family apartments and condominiums. Courtney also works for the company managing the bookkeeping, running the HR department, and “doing whatever else is needed!” An LCSW-C, Courtney has also spent the past 10 years providing outpatient mental health care.

Courtney notes that among Ethan’s many talents is soccer, which he started playing shortly after learning to walk at nine months. “He is quite good—and it seems he is left-footed, which is something that does not run in our family.” Their baby, 3 monthold Kira, is Ethan’s biggest fan, watching his every move. Her special talent? “Her ability to stay up all day long!” laughs Courtney. Family fun for the Hercenbergs includes spending time at the beach and pool, and taking family walks. They also enjoy coming to BT on Shabbat, attending the services, and going to the Cookie Minyan. “BT is a nice community—even with a big congregation, it has a personal feel to it,” Courtney shares. “Within 12 hours of giving birth to Kira, I had a message from two of BT’s rabbis as well as [BT School Director of Education] Dr. Schorr, all congratulating us on Kira’s birth.” The Hercenbergs were touched by the many BT shul and staff members who delivered meals and presents to their

BT students excel in college entrance exams Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School students outperform their counterparts in Baltimore County Public Schools and across Maryland state. These impressive statistics reflect the academic preparation BT students receive for college, and of the wealth of opportunities they have, based upon their achievements. This data reinforces what 92% of our School parents reported in our most recent survey — that a Beth Tfiloh education prepares their children for the next level of education.
