Meet Our Members Jessica and Aaron Kaplan
realize very quickly BT was our new home. From the first time we went to BT, we were so impressed by the warmth of the shul, the programming for kids and the amazing clergy and staff.”
Like nearly half of the Baltimore Jewish community, Jessica and Aaron Kaplan are not native to Baltimore but have made this community their home. Jessica, who grew up in Toronto, holds a bachelor’s degree with a double major in psychology and French, and a master’s degree in organizational behavior from NYU, which she uses in her human resources role at Laureate Education. Aaron, a New York native who holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Columbia University and an MD/ PhD in cardiac electrophysiology from University of Buffalo, is now completing a combined residency fellowship in cardiology at University of Maryland. The couple met while Aaron was completing his MD/PhD degree. They both got actively involved in the Buffalo Jewish community once they settled in as a newly-married couple. “I was pregnant when Aaron was looking at residency options and it was
very important to us to go somewhere with a vibrant Jewish community and a modern Orthodox synagogue,” Jessica said. “When we matched in Baltimore, we reached out to rabbis from a couple of different synagogues to learn more about their communities.” After connecting with Beth Tfiloh’s Rabbi Chai Posner and Director of Synagogue Life Holly Venick, they were sold. “Holly’s warmth and the warmth of the community from day one made us
Their 18-month-old son, Jake, is a Cookie Minyannaire and will start BT PreSchool’s Little Me program in January. He enjoys singing and dancing in shul, and especially loved “waving his flag and dancing during the Hakafos the night of Simchas Torah,” said Jessica, who also serves as a liaison to the Synagogue Life Committee on behalf of parents of preschool-aged children. When not at BT, the Kaplans maximize Aaron’s limited time off with trips to visit their families back in Toronto and New York. They also enjoy taking day trips to explore Maryland, since “Jake loves any trip where he can run outside!” We love seeing the Kaplans at shul every Shabbat!

Development News Donor Recognition Dinner
If you have not made your gift to the 2019 Annual Campaign, you can do so at bethtfiloh.com/annualcampaign.
Beth Tfiloh supporters recently gathered for the Annual Donor Recognition Dinner celebrating their commitment to Beth Tfiloh by making a yearly gift of $1,000 or more to the Annual Campaign. Among the guests were BT “lifers,” alumni, staff, congregants, school parents and grandparents, and grandparents of alumni. Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School Director of Education Dr. Zipora Schorr and Beth Tfiloh Congregation’s Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg shared their gratitude with the guests for their generosity, followed by five devoted BT family members who shared their personal feelings of affection for Beth Tfiloh. Among the speakers was BT congregant Steven Pruce. He and his wife, Fran, a former BT Congregation board chair, are the parents of Beth Tfiloh Hebrew School graduate Alan and Day School alum Cheryl ’04. He recalled his mother’s passing in April and the extent to which the BT community pitched in to help. “Every morning

between 5 and 10, BT boys showed up to daven. They didn’t know me, and they certainly didn’t know my mother,” he shared. Appreciative of the lengths the boys traveled, he noted the extra effort it took for them to accompany his family for early morning minyans in the “diaspora” of Owings Mills – which was not on the way to school. Sharing sentiments of the opportunities BT provides her family, 2019 Annual Campaign Chair Emily Levin spoke from the heart: “We’ve never felt pressure to be more than who we are, or do more than what we do, yet as a family have been provided countless opportunities to learn and grow Jewishly at our own pace and level of comfort.” She went on to say, “BT is blessed to have such a diverse Jewish population and practices derech eretz, respect, for everyone’s level of observance.” All guest speakers, each with unique connections, affiliations and experiences spread similar messages of adoration and appreciation for Beth Tfiloh, a place they fondly call “home.” As Steve Pruce put it, “We really are one BT.”
Beth Tfiloh’s PIE (Participation Is Everything) initiative kicked off on November 27th, Giving Tuesday, we reached out to our fellow school parents to encourage full participation in our Annual Campaign. Last year’s PIE initiative was an incredible success, with an increase in parent participation from 29% to an impressive 74% in just four weeks. This year we are aiming even higher with a goal of 80% school parent participation in the Annual Campaign. When we unite as a school community to support the Annual Campaign, we not only reinforce the Jewish value of tzedakah that our children learn in school, but we also demonstrate a strong level of commitment to our community. And that commitment makes a strong statement to the major donors and foundations who invest in BT, in turn developing a stronger partnership with our school. Your gift supports BT’s renowned program: professional development for our gifted teachers; individualized college guidance programs that supports 100% college applicant acceptance; 43 Middle and High School interscholastic athletic teams; award-winning theatrical productions…and so much more. Be a piece of the PIE and participate now! Join us at: bethtfiloh.com/ annualcampaign Thank you to our amazing volunteers leading the PIE effort: Emily Levin, 2019 Annual Campaign Chair and Lisa Hackam, 2019 Annual Campaign Vice Chair
