THE BETH TFILOH ALUMNI NEWSLETTER

ALUMNI WEEKEND 2020

Welcome to the ReZOOMion! 1

ALUMNI WEEKEND 2020 Class of 2005 15-year reunion

Class of 2000 20-year reunion

Welcome to the

ReZOOMion!

A global pandemic could not stop our Beth Tfiloh alumni from coming home to BT, even if only online. The BT classes of 2000, 2005 and 2010 celebrated their milestone reunions over Thanksgiving week, meeting virtually to reminisce, play fun trivia games and toast their classes. Local alumni enjoyed a bagel “on BT” at Goldberg’s Bagels, in lieu of the annual brunch when they typically return to school for a visit. All alumni were invited to reconnect and catch up with some of their favorite High School teachers at the “Where are They Now” virtual event. Thank you to Mrs. Mindy Dickler, Mrs. Beenie Finkelstein, Rabbi David Finkelstein, Mrs. Rae Goldberg, Mrs. Joyce Grand, Rabbi Ira and Rachel Kosowsky, Rabbi Jeff Kuperman, Morah Sarah Lanner, Rabbi Avi Silverman, and Mrs. Malka (Mizrachi) Weiser for joining us!

Celebrating Alumni All Stars Two BT alumni were recognized for their accomplishments in the arts and athletics at the school’s virtual Thanksgiving Convocation. Mazal Tov to Matthew Jeffers ’09 who was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame in Loving Memory of Ellie Goldenberg ‘12 a”h, and Ezra Olman ’91 who was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame.

MATTHEW JEFFERS ’09 Matthew starred in You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown, Lend Me A Tenor, Leading Ladies, and The Curious Savage during his years at BT. Today, he is an actor/ screenwriter who currently resides in New York City. Since 2018, he has performed in three off-Broadway productions, and has collaborated with Tony Award-winning directors. He currently plays resident doctor Ed Walsh in the hit medical drama New Amsterdam on NBC. Later this year, Matthew will make his feature film debut in the dark comedy Unidentified Objects, which he stars in opposite Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards nominee Sarah Hay. The BT Theater Hall of Fame was established last year in loving memory of Ellie Goldenberg ’12 a”h by her family to honor Beth Tfiloh alumni who are excelling in the arts. Accepting the induction, Matthew commented, “I’ve come to appreciate the importance and the significance of the word community. You find the right community, you’ll never get too lost. I’ll continue to build communities as I carve out a career, but all of them—every one—will be built upon the foundation of the community at 3300 Old Court Road, the community that gave me the green light, one that I will always say with immense pride, Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School.”

Alum Takes Over Weekly Parshah Preview Every year over alumni weekend, Beth Tfiloh Congregation welcomes back an alum to speak on Shabbat and inspire shul members with a D’var Torah. This year, Rabbi Steven Exler ‘98 delivered that inspiration virtually, taking over Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg’s weekly Parshah Preview video providing insights on the Sedra of the week. Rabbi Exler is the rabbi at Hebrew Institute of Riverdale - The Bayit.

EZRA OLMAN ’91 Ezra Olman ’91 played soccer, track and field, and baseball for the Beth Tfiloh Warriors. After graduating from the University of Maryland, Ezra made aliyah, served in the IDF, and attended yeshiva. He received an MA in creative writing from Bar-Ilan University in 2004 and subsequently wrote a book of short stories, The Attempted Destruction of Herr Neumann. He currently works as director of demand generation for a cybersecurity startup in Tel Aviv. Ezra lives in Modiin, Israel, where he counts several Beth Tfiloh alumni as neighbors. He is married to Jane, an attorney specializing in real estate law. They have four children aged 22, 20, 16 and 12. Ezra reflected on his glory days as a BT Warrior, saying, “Putting on the BT Warriors uniform and going out into the world to compete gave you a strong sense of a Jewish identity just as tangible, if not more so than anything we learned in the classroom.”

BT Warriors Hit the Big Leagues Five BT seniors recently signed letters of intent to continue competing in their sport at the collegiate level – the greatest number of students to sign from one BT graduating class. This historic milestone is a testament to the growth of Beth Tfiloh’s athletics program. From lacrosse and swimming, to golf and more, BT students have the opportunity to learn and participate in almost every high school sport. The seniors are: Emily Feldman ‘21, synchronized skating, Adrian College; Drew Goldscheider‘21, lacrosse, St. Mary’s College of Maryland; Alison Krieger ‘21, lacrosse, Lafayette College; Brady Palmer ‘21, lacrosse, Eastern University; and Marissa Ross ‘21, lacrosse, Fairleigh Dickinson University. “We are proud of our rigorous academic curriculum supported by a rich, competitive athletic program,” said Director of Education Dr. Zipora Schorr. “It takes a combination of discipline, hard work and persistence to achieve this lofty goal and we wish each of these students and their families a big mazel tov.” “Beth Tfiloh is unique because our athletic department does not focus on producing college athletes, but rather on infusing our student-athletes with the values that are the core of a BT education,” Athletic Director Stacy Fuld ‘02 told the Baltimore Sun. “What’s really significant about this year’s class is that they were successful in producing five quality young Jewish men and women who also achieved recognition in their sports and they earned spots in college programs. That’s what makes BT and these student-athletes really special.”

Director of Education Dr. Zipora Schorr and BT Athletic Director Stacy Fuld ‘02 take a proud moment to pose with our honored athletes.

A Golden Opportunity In honor of the matriarch of their family, Dorothy Kotler, David and Zozzie Golden have made a donation to Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School designated to address the varying learning needs of each child. From 1961-1987, Dorothy dedicated herself to the students and teachers at United Talmud Torah Schools of Montreal, Canada, where she began as a teacher, led as a principal and then served as curriculum coordinator. She was truly devoted to Jewish education, leading with care and commitment, fairness and respect. At a tribute honoring Dorothy upon her retirement in 1987, it was noted that she “believes that learning is a lifelong process, and that an educator’s main role is to help Ira ‘99 and his grandparents Dorothy and Gordon students to develop Kotler (z’l) at his Beth Tfiloh graduation. to their full potential by giving them the tools to explore their interests, develop their talents, and find answers to their questions.” With their gift, the Goldens hope to encourage challenged students to grow and learn at Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School. Dorothy’s grandchildren, Rachael (Golden) Spiegel ’98 and Ira Golden ’99, are graduates of Beth Tfiloh. Dorothy had the joy of watching Rachael and Ira grow throughout their years at Beth Tfiloh – a school just like the one to which she devoted her life, a school that gives you wings to take you into the future. Although separated by many miles, Dorothy took joy in visiting the school on Grandparents Day for many years, and was proud to celebrate with Rachael and Ira at their graduation ceremonies. When asked why the Goldens chose to direct their gift to Beth Tfiloh’s Academic Support Program, they shared that, “An excellent Jewish education is the greatest gift we can give our children and this is why we believe in supporting Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School. Our children have grown with a moral compass that has defined who they are as human beings and as members of society. Rachael and Ira have a strong foundation that has guided them throughout their lives. It gives us great pride and joy knowing that our financial gift to the school will help students at Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School grow and flourish into the future.” A plaque recognizing the Goldens’ generous gift will be dedicated inside of the Middle School Learning Lab and will serve as a reminder of their beloved matriarch and her commitment to Jewish education.

Alumni Reconnect to BT through Torah Learning This fall, recent Beth Tfiloh alumni reconnected with their High School teachers and each other through the newlylaunched online learning program, TBT – Torat Beth Tfiloh. The brainchild of High School Judaics Studies teacher Rabbi Benyamin Moss, TBT sessions are taught by Rabbi Moss and other beloved faculty members, including Rabbi Yosef Furman, Mrs. Jaclyn Sova, Mrs. Racheli Daniel, High School Director of Judaic Studies Rabbi Mordechai Soskil and Beth Tfiloh Congregation’s Rabbi Chai Posner. Each session, the teacher offers their insights on topics such as current events, pop culture, and politics, woven with connections and lessons learned through Jewish text. Our alumni love engaging in discussions with their teachers and former classmates. “Being a part of the TBT program has been an incredible experience. Having the opportunity to reconnect with other alumni and teachers has been rewarding. Beth Tfiloh…it’s a family forever and I’m honored to be a part of it.” –Yitzi Teichman ’16 is a healthcare administrator in the Los Angeles area. “I am really loving the Torat BT sessions so far! It is amazing to see and interact with my former classmates and teachers. It makes me feel at home. Thank you.” –Eli Getz ’20 is a freshman at University of Michigan. “It’s so difficult to learn Torah during times like these. Torat BT has allowed me to learn what I love with teachers that I miss dearly! It is definitely the highlight of my week.” –Shayna Brookman ’16 is a paralegal and is completing her associate’s degree and plans to transfer to a four-year college next semester. “Being a part of the TBT class is the highlight of my semester! As busy as college can get, this class allows me to take a break from all of the stress, develop a greater sense of clarity and appreciation for Judaism, and reconnect with my friends and favorite teachers!” –Jeremy Friedman ’16 is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in security and risk analysis at Penn State. “I always enjoy going to Torat BT seminars! These sessions allow me to use the skills I learned while at BT and to reconnect with teachers and fellow alumni.” –Jacob Brenner ’19 is currently a sophomore on a pre-med track at Tufts University. He plans to major in biology and minor in Hebrew.

BT Family Inspires Giving Tuesday Generosity Thank you to an extraordinary Beth Tfiloh family of alumni who inspired generosity on Giving Tuesday. Alex ‘12, Andrew ‘14 and Ben Kadish inspired 137 alumni to support the 2021 Annual Campaign, bringing the total number of contributions to 309. The Kadishes generously matched every gift made on Giving Tuesday, doubling their fellow alumni’s contributions. “To me, Beth Tfiloh is about the people, the values, and the community support system that holds you up and cares for you,” shared Alex. “Beth Tfiloh people are my forever people—the friends, mentors, and family that I know will be a part of my life forever. I’ve been on the receiving end of the generosity of the BT community, and now as an adult I’m grateful and humbled to be able to give back to a place that has given my family and I so much.”

Thank you to the 309 alumni who have contributed to this year’s campaign. Your support demonstrates not only your belief in the future of Beth Tfiloh and your gratitude to this thriving institution you once called home, but also your appreciation for excellence in education, for the teachings of core Jewish values, and for tomorrow’s leaders. Make your gift today via Venmo: @BTAlumni, or by visiting www.bethtfiloh.com/alumnigiving
