The Beth Jacob Hebrew School at Beth Tfiloh is proud to announce a new track specifically for children with language-based learning differences. The Meir Program will consist of primary and intermediate classes taught by specially trained Judaic instructors. The program will provide proven language instruction and a multi-sensory approach to give children a strong connection to their rich Jewish heritage. The program has been developed in consultation with a team of experts including Ben Shifrin, Head of Jemicy School; Zipora Schorr, Beth Tfiloh Director of Education; and Susan Yurow, Beth TfilohÊs Lower School Assistant Principal and Learning

Specialist. Brian Singer serves as Hebrew School Coordinator. The Meir Program is being subsidized through funding generously sponsored by BT members and school parents, Michael and Jen Sachs. The curriculum will include all the elements of our Hebrew School Hebrew language, prayer, Shabbat and holidays. Teachers will engage studentsÊ interest and strengthen their association and memory using a rich variety of sights, sounds, and multisensory experiences to convey the beauty and joy of Judaism, and inspire them to be proud and caring Jews. Each student will have the benefit of a Jewish Studies program which Continued on page 3

Celebrating the Joy of Judaism, Embracing all Jews.

Take a break from your Pesach preparations and join the Beth Tfiloh Family for a delicious PRE-PESACH SHABBAT DINNER on Friday evening, April 11. Enjoy a warm and friendly meal with your friends. Even bring along your out-of-town guests who come early! The deadline for reservations is Friday, April 4 at 9 am. Register online at www.bethtfiloh.com/ shabbatdinner or call 410-413-2221. Chairs: Eve and Mark Gheiler, Jen and Ben Sobol.

Extra copies of Rabbi WohlbergÊs popular Seder companion, „A TweetinÊ Pesach,‰ are available upon request. To request copies of this wonderful resource to enhance your familyÊs Seder, please stop by the Synagogue Office during regular weekday hours. Digital copies are also available on our website at www.bethtfiloh.com/ pesach.

Unfortunately, there are many people in our community who will not experience a Seder in its fullness simply because they have not been extended an invitation. These individuals may be college students, recent immigrants, newcomers to the area, those unable to travel to be with relatives, or otherwise unable to make a Seder for themselves. If you or someone you know would like to be either a Seder host or a Seder guest, please call the BT Pesach Hotline at 410-413-2290 or email mail@btfiloh.org, and we will be happy to make a „Seder match‰ for you.

Lunch and a Movie was cancelled twice due to bad weather. Never fear; the new plan is to present the film, the comedy Dorfman in Love, at the June Sisterhood evening meeting, followed by a dessert reception. This presentation is free and open to the public with a reservation. Details will follow in the May Bulletin. To avoid the large expenditure of returning checks to those who paid for this event, we elected to shred the checks and dispose of them. Please adjust your check registers accordingly. Thank you for your understanding. The 98th Convention of the Federation of Jewish WomenÊs Organizations, „Women of Action,‰ will be held on Thursday, May 15, 9:30 am 2:30 pm, at Baltimore Hebrew Congregation. The keynote speaker is Deborah Grayson Riegel. The cost of the luncheon is $36; checks should be made payable to the Federation of Jewish WomenÊs Organizations and mailed to Arlene Mazer, 6 Halston Court, Baltimore, MD 21209. Beth TfilohÊs honoree for 2014 is Rosalie Klotzman! Please plan to attend and support our hardworking representative. Pesach is right around the corner. Our Gift Shop has a large assortment of seder plates in metals, glass, or ceramics; several styles of Hagaddahs; cloth, ceramic, and Lucite matzoh holders; and holiday bechers. There are excellent Pesach-specific cookbooks and amusing and absorbing Ten Plagues toys for the children.

Come in also to admire our fanciful and lovely animal-shaped tzdakah boxes. The store is open Monday Thursday, 1 4 pm, and Sunday, 10 am 1 pm. Please join us on May 10 for the Brotherhood-Sisterhood Shabbat. A meet and greet kiddush will follow services. Roselyn Kalb reports that greeting cards will be mailed to our homebound members for Pesach from the Chesed Committee. Cheering calls are a yearround undertaking. Please call Roz at 410-356-3456 to volunteer. ZUMBA! The long run of twicea-week dance classes taught by Debby Shevitz has come to an end. SELLING YOUR CHAMETZ Because the Rabbis realized that disposing of Chametz completely would involve a considerable financial hardship for many, they devised a process whereby a Jew could sell his or her Chametz to a non-Jew before Pesach and repurchase it after the conclusion of the holiday. This sale has been structured so that the non-Jew will find it in his or her best interests to resell the Chametz after Pesach. Because this sale involves many technicalities, it has been traditional for the Rabbi of the congregation to act as the agent for those who sell their Chametz. Everyone who prepares his or her home for Pesach should arrange with the Rabbi to sell their Chametz. This is effectuated by signing a Statement of Authorization (Shtar HarshaÊah), which may be done anytime prior to midmorning on Monday, April 14. The authorization form below meets the Halachic requirements and should be delivered to the Congregation Office in order that Rabbi Wohlberg may receive it prior to Monday, April 14. If you own Chametz in several places, such as your home and a vacation home, include all of the addresses. It is customary to make a contribution in connection with the selling of Chametz. Please make your check payable to the „Beth Tfiloh Charity Fund‰ to assist the many needy individuals in the Baltimore area who will not be able to properly observe the Passover holiday without some financial assistance. Your generosity will be most appreciated. REMINDER - Please wait a brief period after the end of Passover before using your Chametz in order for Rabbi Wohlberg to have sufficient time to repurchase it on your behalf.

Get Ready . . . Here Comes SPOTLIGHT 2014! to encourage Jewish living. Certainly, the clergy are primary assets who invest so much of themselves in the welfare of the Congregation in general, and the members in particular.‰

This June, Motown is coming to BT. Human Nature puts an updated spin on MotownÊs classic hits each night, performing to sold-out audiences at Las VegasÊ „The Motown Show‰ at The Venetian. On June 11th, theyÊll bring the magic of Motown to Beth Tfiloh CongregationÊs Dahan Sanctuary at SPOTLIGHT 2014, Beth Tfiloh SchoolÊs major annual fundraiser benefiting the Scholarship Fund. This yearÊs gala fundraiser will honor Annette & Jerome Zimmerman, and is being co-chaired by Natalie & Jay Chason and Shelley & Bobby Kaye. The event helps provide Financial Aid for 40 percent of our students, and enables Beth Tfiloh to achieve its mission to provide a Jewish education to as many children as possible. Meet the Kayes The KayesÊ love of BT began 30 years ago. „We became members of BT in 1985 when our kids started Hebrew school,‰ remembers Shelley. „We were looking for a house in this neighborhood where I could walk to shul and got lucky enough to move right down the street.‰

The Kayes are passionate about supporting Jewish education, because that is the foundation of our communityÊs future. „Especially in light of the recent Pew survey, Jewish education is vital to preserving our community,‰ urges Shelley. „It used to be that Jewish education took place in the home. That doesnÊt happen as much anymore. This place⁄thereÊs no place better to do it.‰

to Israel with Rabbi Wohlberg in 1991 sealed the deal. All our family simchas are attached to BT births, baby namings, brisses, bar and bat mitzvahs, weddings. The rabbis and Cantor are here for us in good times and bad.‰ „BT is a welcoming, truly Modern Orthodox shul,‰ says Shelley. „ItÊs a big place with room for everyone, no matter what their background or level of observance. It lives by the words „embracing all Jews,‰ and does so much

So when Rabbi Wohlberg and Mrs. Schorr asked them to co-chair SPOTLIGHT 2014, they couldnÊt say no! „We know the importance of Jewish education and want to make sure that this wonderful school is available to families who want it,‰ says Bobby. Their co-chairmanship is just one of the ways the Kayes demonstrate their commitment to BT; they are long-time supporters of BTÊs Annual Campaign and have also contributed to the Chazak Campaign, ensuring BTÊs viability for generations to come.

BobbyÊs family has even longer ties to Beth Tfiloh: his father attended HONORING Annette & Jerome Zimmerman CO-CHAIRS Natalie & Jay Chason and Shelley & Robert Kaye shul at the old BT on Garrison Boulevard, while his aunt was a graduate of one of the first Hebrew al school classes. nu ship n A lar Today, Bobby and ho nt Sc Eve Shelley are truly a part of the BT family⁄and BT is an important part of theirs.

Get Ready . .

SPOTLIGHT 2014 CO-CHAIRS, Shelley & Bobby Kaye

to Israel with Rabbi Wohlberg in 1991 sealed the deal.

„Through nearly 30 years of coming to BT on Shabbos and Yom Tov, weÊve formed a significant connection to the shul,‰ comments Bobby. „A trip

Sisterhood News Lunch and a Movie was cancelled twice due to bad weather.

Brotherhood News Come in also to admire our fanciful and lovely animal-shaped tzdakah boxes. Sisterhood thanks Debby for her expert, insightful, and caring instruction; she has shown her students a healthier, happier way to fitness.

Beth Tfiloh has had an outstanding record of academic success with students from a wide range of learning profiles and believes strongly in the words of our sages that we must „educate each child according to their own way (Proverbs 22:1).‰ The Meir Program („Meir‰ is Hebrew for „one who illuminates‰) will ensure the success of students as they develop a love of Jewish learning and feel included as valued members of the Beth Tfiloh family. The Meir Program is accepting applications for Fall 2014 for students age six through ten. Students will attend sessions on Sunday morning and Wednesday afternoon, for a total of four hours per week. Classes take place in Beth TfilohÊs state-of-the-art Lower School, with access to all of its many resources.

The Seder is one of the most beautiful Jewish home rituals, filled with the many festive symbols and sounds of the Passover holiday, and the Mitzvah of retelling the exodus from Egypt.
