Bulletin THE BETH TFILOH

Member survey results help define future Congregational priorities In preparation for Beth Tfiloh’s approaching 100th anniversary, the Congregation’s Board of Directors launched a Strategic Planning initiative last year. A Strategic Planning Committee (SPC) was formed under the leadership of Cass Gottlieb and Michael Friedman, appointed by Board Chair Fran Pruce. The SPC was given the task of identifying and prioritizing the needs of the Congregation for the next several years, and developing a strategy for attaining goals in the long term with guidance from professional facilitator Orlee Turitz of Orlee/Golden. As part of the Strategic Planning process, the SPC conducted a survey of the entire membership to gather input from as many stakeholders as possible and to help establish a baseline of information from which to move forward into the future.

Here is an overview of the survey results and the goals of the SPC, provided by Cass and Michael. What are the objectives of the Beth Tfiloh Strategic Planning Committee? As part of this initiative, a statement of the Congregation’s Vision and Values (available at bit.ly/BTValues) was established, serving as the underpinning of our future direction and priorities. In examining the needs of the Congregation, the following key issues were identified: • Ensure that BT continues to be relevant in the lives of our members (across all ages) and the broader Jewish community • Enhance the coordination of professional services, programs and Continued on page 4

Survey results help define future congregational priorities use of staff across the shul, school and camp • Plan for a leadership transition, as key professionals decide to retire • Replenish our philanthropic base as donors age • Ensure capacity to sustain our physical plant, as costs rise The Committee consolidated the critical issues under the following main Priority Issue:

S

ustain Beth Tfiloh Congregation’s ability to serve and maintain its relevance to its membership and the broader Jewish community over the next generation through the transition of key Rabbinic and professional leaders.

What did you hope to learn from the member survey? Our hope was that we could establish useful baseline data about members’ perceptions about how they value BT and their satisfaction with what BT has to offer. From this data, we could make goals for improvement and growth. Did the rate of response meet your expectations? We received 426 responses, which represents approximately 23% of our membership. We were pleased with the response for a first-time survey of this sort. Hopefully, this will become an annual event, and even more people will respond when they see that the survey results are being put to good use. Were there any surprises from the results of the survey? While we were very pleased to see that most respondents are generally satisfied with the services and programmatic offerings, we also received helpful comments and suggestions on areas with opportunities for improvement. See the summary of survey results on page 1. What do you consider the most important takeaways from the survey? In response to the question, “What is the most pressing problem facing BT today?”, the two most-cited issues were: (1) future rabbinic leadership; and (2) 4

sustaining membership levels. These top concerns helped inform the Priority Issue identified in the Strategic Planning process. What next steps is the Strategic Planning Committee taking based on the survey results? We are using baseline data mined from the survey and information provided by professional staff to help us establish Strategic Planning benchmarks for measuring success. The Strategic Plan focuses on achieving the following goals: • A multi-generational membership that is engaged in the BT community. • Fostering the continued synergy of the BT community (including Camp, Hebrew School and Day School) to

Continued from page 1

build Jewish experiences and BT membership. • Maintaining a reputation as an epicenter of Jewish life in Baltimore. • Sustaining the balance of “Modern” and “Orthodox” within the Congregation, in both membership and practice. • Appointing new senior leaders for rabbinic and professional positions, who reflect the core values and strategic priorities of the BT Congregation. • Attaining financial sustainability for the future. An update on the progress of our Strategic Planning efforts will be provided in future issues of the BT Bulletin. Please stay tuned!

Development News

The BT Match Delivers an Overwhelming Response On September 8, Beth Tfiloh announced the BT Match — thanks to a special group of “BT Angels,” all new and increased gifts to the 2017 Beth Tfiloh Annual Campaign will be matched 100 percent.

BT Annual Campaign Vice Chair Emily Levin and BT School Parent Association President Laura Wolf

The response to the BT Match so far has been overwhelming. To date, 126 families made first-time gifts and 250 families increased their gifts. That means 70 percent of all donors who have participated so far have taken advantage of this generous match, doubling their support of the BT Annual Campaign and helping us reach 45 percent of our total campaign dollar goal. “I think people are just eager to help in any way they can, and knowing that gift increases or first-time gifts will be matched 100 percent makes them feel that much better about helping out with such an important cause,” says Parent Association President Laura Wolf, one of our many campaign volunteers who have helped potential donors understand the full impact their support can have by participating in the match. For Laura, volunteering for this year's Annual Campaign has an added dimension: “It’s exciting to call someone and tell them about the match. It makes all parties

Learning the Dangers of Distracted Driving Beth Tfiloh juniors and their parents attended a special program to learn about the danges of distracted driving.

But the most impactful presentation was made by a young man, whose life changed forever as a result of a drunk driving accident, leaving him with severe physical and mental injuries.

Following the presentation, facilitators led parents and students in group discussions. Mrs. Rochelle Sullivan, High School guidance counselor, emphasizes that this is not a one-time discussion. “The topic of drugs, alcohol, distracted driving should be talked about early and often,” she says. 8

HIGH SCHOOL: The Boys JV Soccer team is carrying a 3-2-1 record into the second half of the season highlighted by wins over Indian Creek (4-0), Pallotti (3-1), and Key School (2-1). The Boys Varsity Soccer team is 1-1 in the league on the strength of a 3-2 win over Chapelgate. The Girls Varsity Soccer team picked up an exciting 3-1 victory over Oldfields after finishing last season without a league win and is working hard to continue improving.

Presenters spoke about the consequences of distracted driving and failure to follow road rules, including devastating life-altering injuries, like those treated daily at Shock Trauma, and legal repercussions, from fines to jail time.

“He really drove home the message that what we do now has the potential to affect us for the rest of our lives,” says Rayut B. ’17, chair of the Beth Tfiloh High School’s Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) chapter. “Kyle never thought it could happen to him. He was inspired to speak to us about his experience because he never wants us to make the same mistake he did.”

scrimmages and are excited to get their regular season underway.

Warriors Fall Team Update By Coach Marc Burkom ‘98 MIDDLE SCHOOL: The Girls MS Soccer team picked up an exciting 2-1 win over Mt. Carmel and tied Notre Dame Prep 1-1. The MS Cross Country team placed three runners in the overall top 10 in their first meet of the season. The Girls Volleyball teams are off to a great start, including wins over Mt. Carmel and Maryvale for both the “A” and “B” teams. Both Boys MS Soccer teams made strong showings in preseason

The Girls Varsity Tennis team is sitting strong in 2nd place with a 5-1 league record including a 5-0 win over Oldfields and 4-1 wins over John Carroll and St. Timothy’s.

The Girls Varsity Volleyball program, featuring 3 teams for the first time in school history, has picked up some exciting wins. The Varsity defeated Key School 3-0, JV1 has wins over Oldfields and St. Timothy’s, and JV2 triumphed over Friends and Oldfields. The Girls Varsity Cross Country team split their first meet of the season 2-2 with wins over Indian Creek and Seton Keough and has run well in two close losses to Friends School. The Boys Varsity Cross Country team is 4-1 over two meets and owns 2nd place in the league. Playoffs and finals are just around the corner for our high school teams! Stay tuned to cheer on your Warriors down the stretch.

Beth Tfiloh Honors Louise and Morton J. (z”l) Macks’s Commitment to Jewish Education Like the Mordechai, the hero of the Purim story, Morty Macks was a champion of Jewish education in Baltimore. At the recent ceremony honoring both Morty (z”l) and his wife, Louise, BT Director of Education Mrs. Zipora Schorr reflected on the family’s passion for and commitment to Jewish education, and Morty’s role as a founder and president of Beth Tfiloh’s High School. “There’s nothing that Morty believed in more than the oneness of Klal Yisrael,” explained Mrs. Schorr. “He believed that children from one end of the Jewish spectrum to the other end should study Torah together; that was his mission and it is ours.” “Morty was unique. He never forgot his roots,” shared Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg, rabbi of Beth Tfiloh Congregation and Dean of BT High School. “He never forgot his people. He simply loved to give of himself. And he gave so much!”

was Mordechai, Jewish denominational affiliation wasn’t important. “All that mattered was being Jewish and being educated Jewishly!” said Rabbi Wohlberg. Louise and Morty’s names now appear above the High School entrance, a testament to their monumental philanthropic support that made the High School possible. Morty’s instrumental role in establishing the High School and his visionary leadership are memorialized on a plaque in the High

School lobby. It reads: MORTON J. MACKS

MACKS DEDICATION - Mrs. Louise Macks and family attended the recent dedication of the High School entrance to honor the family’s steadfast commitment to Beth Tfiloh.
