Bulletin THE BETH TFILOH
New school year reaffirms school’s mission and values
This fall, Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School opened its doors to over 1,000 students, from PreSchool through High School, and including our Beth Jacob Hebrew School. New students have joined the BT family from a wide range of Jewish observance, reaffirming the school’s mission to serve a diverse student body in the spirit of K’lal Yisrael and Jewish unity. Our school’s commitment to academic excellence, and to serving the needs of each individual, continues to be fulfilled through the dedication of an outstanding faculty and administration. At the school’s helm for nearly four decades, Mrs. Zipora Schorr has assembled a stellar administrative team that works tirelessly together with teachers to create a school community where children are challenged to think, encouraged to grow, respected as individuals, and given a strong sense of pride and joy in their Jewish identity.

SHULEM DEEN
“All Who Go Do Not Return” Shulem Deen is the author of the award-winning memoir, “All Who Go Do Not Return,” an account of growing up in and then leaving the Skverers, one of the most insular Hasidic sects in the U.S. He is a columnist for “The Forward,” and in 2015 was listed in the “Forward 50,” an annual list of American Jews with outsized roles on political and social issues. His articles have appeared in “The New Republic,” “Salon,” “Tablet Magazine,” and elsewhere. He is a board member of Footsteps, an organization that offers assistance and support to those who have left the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community.
But by far the greatest testament to our school’s success is the product of a BT education: our graduates. They gain admission to top colleges and assume positions of Jewish leadership on campus. They are excelling in a wide range of businesses and professions. And more and more BT alumni are choosing to send their own children to Beth Tfiloh school. Families who are interested in learning more about our school meet individually with our Admissions Director, Mrs. Laurie Kott, and are given personalized tours. Open Houses for each division provide an opportunity to meet administrators, faculty, as well as current students and their parents, and learn about the program. For more information about our school admission process, visit our website or call 410-413-2323. School News Early Childhood Expert Inspires PreSchool Teachers
DOROT FAMILIES: Nearly 50 members of BT's Dorot Families — BT High School alumni who are now School parents themselves — and their parents gathered in the Lower School Russel Family Library and Media Center to reminisce, hear school updates from BT Director of Education Mrs. Zipora Schorr and meet new High School Principal Dr. Renee Koplon while enjoying a bagel breakfast. Dorot Families are the largest growing segment of our student population and include over 100 students this school year.
DOROT CHAIRS, Rachael (Weiner) Bolotin ‘94 and Nina (Auster) Cusner ‘00 HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL Dr. Renee Koplon greeted students at assembly sporting a BT team jersey with her favorite number.
World-renowned developmental psychologist and education consultant Dr. Naama Zoran met with Beth Tfiloh PreSchool faculty to share best practices for the Reggio Emilia educational philosophy that underpins BT PreSchool’s emergent curriculum. The emergent curriculum generates long-term topical exploration by igniting students’ curiosity and giving them a lifelong love of learning. Dr. Zoran, who founded the Early Childhood Department at Israel’s Ministry of Education, used a Jewish lens to inspire BT PreSchool teachers to make every classroom experience meaningful for each child. “Dr. Zoran showed our teachers how to see children as competent learners and thinkers, and as individual people,” explained PreSchool Director, Mrs. Melissa Lebowitz. “Our teachers are lifelong learners,” emphasized BT Director of Education Mrs. Zipora Schorr. “Their enthusiasm and excitement for new ideas will translate to a PreSchool with enthusiastic and excited children, ready to learn and discover.” Morah Ingrid Strand, 3’s teacher, was amazed by Dr. Zoran’s ideas. “I am really looking forward to working with her more throughout the year so she can help me take my ideas to the next level,” she says. Four’s teacher Morah Stephanie Ziman was equally inspired: “Dr. Zoran is a firm believer that we, as teachers, should accept and treat our children as individuals. She recognizes that the classroom environment is where the teacher and children learn together through exploration and discovery.”

School News
Welcome Aboard to New School Faculty Members This year, we are excited to welcome new faculty members in each division, including several teachers who could not wait to return! Here is a first look at some of our exciting new arrivals, with more new and veteran teachers to be profiled in future issues.
Mekenzie Kruger ’09 PreSchool 3’s
Mekenzie’s love for teaching young children was inspired by her mother, FredaDale, who taught in Beth Tfiloh’s kindergarten in the 80s. After teaching in Manhattan private schools for a Mekenzie Kruger couple of years, New York’s hectic pace — and high cost of living — prompted Mekenzie to return to Baltimore…and to BT, where she graduated in 2009. “I wanted to come home, to be in a place where I could grow and learn,” Mekenzie says. “BT makes you feel like you can do anything! I want to help other children feel that way,” she adds, noting the lifelong impact PreSchool teachers have on their students. Mekenzie’s classroom is a musical place, full of excitement and movement. “Music is very powerful in the classroom — it helps kids express themselves in many ways,” she explains. “I try to create many different creative opportunities for them — something to meet each child’s needs.” B.A. Psychology, Muhlenberg College Elementary Education certification, Muhlenberg College M.S.Ed., Early Childhood Special Education, Bankstreet College
Renee Norona
2nd Grade General Studies Mrs. Norona, a Fulbright scholar who has taught in Chile and Honduras, first joined the BT Lower School faculty
in 2014, where she immediately made her mark as a beloved teacher through her commitment to differentiated instruction. Following a one-year maternity leave, Mrs. Norona is excited to return to BT’s “warm and caring culture,” ready to implement her progressive classroom strategies Mrs. Renee Norona designed to “best fit individual children’s needs” to her second grade classroom. “Immediately upon entering the front doors at BT this summer, I felt this connection as if I never left,” comments Mrs. Norona, who has also taught in Baltimore City public schools and served as an Anne Arundel County Public School behavior specialist. “I am extremely energized and excited to get back to doing what I love and that is enriching and challenging the minds of children.” M.A., Education, College of Notre Dame B.S., Education, Western Michigan University
Joseph Ciattei, Jr.
Middle School Humanities and Soccer Coach Mr. Ciattei, Jr. is excited to bring his animated classroom style (“I’m Italian!”) to BT’s Middle School Humanities Department, where he balances teaching serious subject matter with a variety of interesting classroom activities that appeal to students’ personal interests. “I make sure kids are always engaged by giving them a variety of fun activities to do and tying everything we learn to their Mr. Joseph Ciattei, Jr. lives” he notes. On the soccer field, Coach Ciattei focuses on building both team members’ skills and confidence. “I want the kids to learn the game,” he says. “Watching the
players get better from the beginning to the end of the season is the most rewarding part of it.” Maryland State Certification, US and World History M.Ed., Leadership in Teaching, Notre Dame of Maryland University B.A., History, College Misericordia
Tony Maranto, M.D., Ph.D.
High School Physics and Chemistry A former molecular biology researcher who headed his own Tufts University lab and a widely published researcher, Dr. Tony Maranto left the lab for the classroom 18 years ago to “show students what real science is like.” Dr. Dr. Tony Maranto Maranto brings an interdisciplinary perspective to the BT High School Science Department following six years as Glenelg Country School’s science department head and five years teaching science at McDonogh School, in addition to teaching neurobiology at Harvard for fourteen years. As a former applied science and basic researcher, Dr. Maranto is committed to teaching students both the scientific inquiry and engineering design methods – and when to apply each. His classroom objective? Advancing humanity. “The ultimate goal of making scientists is to develop things that help humans – not just knowledge for knowledge’s sake,” Dr. Maranto says. Dr. Maranto, who is also an avid runner and novice juggler, shares what attracted him to teaching at Beth Tfiloh: “Having symbols of integrity, kindness and scholarship all around you feels good to me as a reminder of what I stand for.” Ph.D., Biology, Harvard M.D., Albert Einstein College of Medicine A.B., Biochemistry, Harvard College

Choose one exciting elective course: Sex, Religion and Anti-Semitism in the Supreme Court MRS. BARBARA BLUMBERG Nine members of the Supreme Court make decisions that have affected millions of Americans for over 240 years. She is now an adjunct faculty member at the Community College of Baltimore County, at Osher Life Long Learning Institute at Towson University and at the Renaissance Academy for the Florida Gulf State University.
The Power of the Image–Depicting the Jew in Art from the Ancient World to the Present MRS. ANGELA MUNITZ We will uncover the history behind and the circumstances surrounding the visual metaphors, symbols and clues illustrating the Jew as enigmatic and evil, wise and wicked,
neutral or negative and explore the history of the creative visual vocabulary artists have employed to create and communicate an anti-Semitic construct. Mrs. Munitz is a member of Beth Tfiloh, an artist and an art historian.
The Truth Behind the Myth MRS. CHANA SLAVATICKI Explore and expose popular misconceptions about Judaism. Mrs. Slavaticki teaches Judaic studies at Beth Tfiloh High School and the Mercaz. She lectures across the United States on issues related to Jewish life, finding meaning, and womanhood.
