BETH TFILOH BULLETIN
Dear Friends, We made it through the High Holy Days, and thank God, all went well! But the reality is, things “just ain’t the same” without you! From my perspective, it is true to say, “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.” None of us back in March could have imagined that now, in October, there is still a need for many of us to stay “in” in order to stay “well.” But with modern technology, being separated need not mean being isolated. We are here… and you are there. And Zoom can bring us together. We have put together a series of virtual lectures and programs that is truly unprecedented. Never before in memory have we been able to gather so many popular figures, brilliant minds, outstanding teachers, political pundits, and just enough cooks to make sure that we do not spoil the broth. This is our attempt to stay connected, yes. But it is also part of our ongoing desire to make our congregants better Jews and better Americans. You can do it without having to get dressed and leave your home — just allow us in to be with you, if not physically then certainly spiritually and emotionally. We are Beth Tfiloh and we will be entering our centennial year stronger than ever – with you and because of you! Let’s stay connected! At the beginning of Creation we are told that God said, “It is not good for humans to be alone.” Looking forward to your companionship! Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg

Destination: Jerusalem
Destination: Spain
Destination: Poland
Sunday, November 22, 3 pm
Sunday, December 20, 3 pm
Join Danny Ehrlich for a virtual guided tour in the Old City of Jerusalem. We’ll step back 2,700 years to the days of the prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah who walked and taught there and unravel some of the layers of the Jewish “love affair” with Jerusalem, as we gain insight into how Jerusalem became so important to the Jewish people.
The 1,000-year Jewish story of Sepharad (Spain and Portugal) is one of triumph and despair. Join Keshet’s Kayla Ship for a virtual tour of Cordoba, home of Hasdai ibn Shaprut, Yehuda Halevi, and Maimonides, and impressive landmarks such as La Mezquita. Kayla Ship will highlight the “Golden Age” of Spain and its contribution to Hebrew poetry, science, medicine, and Jewish philosophy.
Sunday, January 10, 3 pm Join Danny Ehrlich for an overview of the story of the Jews of Poland past, present and future as we consider these questions: Why did medieval Poland welcome Jews when almost every other country in Europe was expelling its Jews? How did Jewish life flourish in Poland for more than 1,000 years despite rampant anti-Semitism? What is the truth about Poland vis-a-vis its Jews during the Shoah? What is the status of the Jewish community in Poland today?
Danny Ehrlich is the Educational Director of Keshet Educational Journeys. He coordinates Keshet’s Jewish Heritage Tours in Europe and has been guiding educational journeys to Poland for almost 20 years, including Beth Tfiloh High School’s Natanzon/Taylor Senior Trip to Poland and Israel. Introducing BTU - Beth Tfiloh University With many universities now going virtual, Beth Tfiloh has decided to open our own university – no admissions tests required! Each month, BTU will bring you a diverse range of experts from the media, academia, religion and politics to educate, enlighten and unite us. Rabbi Shmuley Boteach: The Disappearing American Jew Thursday, November 5, 2020, 8 pm Despite billions of dollars in outreach and educational investment, assimilation continues to erode the American Jewish community at a calamitous rate. Why aren’t our efforts working? Rabbi Shmuley Boteach explains that Judaism must fulfill the three “P”s criteria if it is to reclaim a lost generation of American youth: It must be passionate, personal, and purposeful; it must make people light up, it must teach them how to live better lives, and it must provide meaning. Join Rabbi Shmuley as he explains how these three “P”s can be achieved. Rabbi Shmuley Boteach is the founder of The World Values Network. He is also what The Washington Post calls “the most famous Rabbi in America” who served as rabbi to Oxford University for 11 years. The international best-selling author of 30 books, he is also the winner of the London Times Preacher of the Year competition.

In addition, he is rabbi and spiritual leader of Beth Shalom B’nai Zaken Ethiopian Hebrew Congregation, located in Chicago, one of the largest black synagogues in America. Mosab Hassan Yousef: Judaism & Islam: Is There Hope? Thursday, February 4, 2021, 8 pm It’s the story of a terrorist-turned-friend. After numerous imprisonments by Shin Bet, the Israeli intelligence service, Mosab Hassan Yousef embarked on a spiritual quest that changed his violent destiny to an advocate of peace. Is his story the story of one man, or can it happen to every man? Mosab Hassan Yousef, the son of Hamas founding leader Sheikh Hassan Yousef, was an integral part of the movement. While imprisoned by the Shin Bet Israeli intelligence service, he became a vital intelligence asset for the Israeli government while Yousef served sideby-side with his father within the upper ranks of Hamas. His story was revealed in the 2008 Fox News documentary “Escape from Hamas.” Yousef ‘s first book, Son of Hamas, reveals new information about this dangerous terrorist organization and unveils the truth behind his own secret role.

BETH TFILOH BULLETIN
A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY In honor of the matriarch of their family, Dorothy Kotler, David and Zozzie Golden have made a donation to Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School designated to address the varying learning needs of each child. From 1961-1987, Dorothy dedicated herself to the students and teachers at United Talmud Torah Schools of Montreal, Canada, where she began as a teacher, led as a principal and then served as curriculum coordinator. She was truly devoted to Jewish education, leading with care and commitment, fairness and respect. At a tribute honoring Dorothy upon her retirement in 1987, it was noted that she “believes that learning is a lifelong process, and that an educator’s main role is to help students to develop to their full potential by giving them the tools to explore their interests, develop their talents, and find answers to their questions.” With their gift, the Goldens hope to encourage challenged students to grow and learn at Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School. Dorothy’s grandchildren, Rachael (Golden) Spiegel ’98 and Ira Golden ’99, are graduates of Beth Tfiloh. Dorothy had the joy of watching Rachael and Ira grow throughout their years at Beth Tfiloh – a school just like the one to which she devoted her life, a school that gives you wings to take you into the future. Although separated by many miles, Dorothy took joy in visiting the school on Grandparents Day for many years, and was proud to celebrate with Rachael and Ira at their graduation ceremonies.
B’NEI MITZVAH Sunday, October 18 Aidee Moss on her bat mitzvah, and to her parents, Tzipie and Larry Moss, sibling Barry Moss, and grandparents Baila and Aryeh Frenkel and and Susan Moss and the late Barry Y. Moss.
MAZEL TOV Mazel Tov to Irving and Roselyn Kalb on the marriage of their grandson, Jordan Kalb, to Shelly Kimmel
When asked why the Goldens chose to direct their gift to Beth Tfiloh’s Academic Support Program, they shared that, “An excellent Jewish education is the greatest gift we Ira ‘99 and his grandparents Dorothy can give our children and Gordon Kotler (z’l) at his Beth Tfiloh and this is why we graduation. believe in supporting Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School. Our children have grown with a moral compass that has defined who they are as human beings and as members of society. Rachael and Ira have a strong foundation that has guided them throughout their lives. It gives us great pride and joy knowing that our financial gift to the school will help students at Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School grow and flourish into the future.” A plaque recognizing the Goldens’ generous gift will be dedicated inside of the Middle School Learning Lab and will serve as a reminder of their beloved matriarch and her commitment to Jewish education.
