Being a BT Member Just Got More Convenient…

INTRODUCING ELECTRONIC STATEMENTS AND AUTOMATED PAYMENTS

Due to popular demand, we are excited to announce a new, modern electronic statement with enhanced features designed to make payments to BT more convenient! Beginning in July, all BT members with outstanding balances will receive account statements electronically. The electronic statement will include a link that automatically takes you to your account so you can pay any or all of the open charges and pledges.

With this new system, you can:

n Make payments using a credit or debit card, or electronic ACH payments directly from your bank account.

n Set up an automated payment schedule for existing pledges (like your dues!) to ease your cash flow and budgeting. Of course, the option to send a check still exists.

The new statement will arrive in July at the email account that we currently have on file. If you prefer to receive the statement at a different email address, want to verify the address we have on file, or wish to continue to receive mailed paper statements from Beth Tfiloh, please contact Sherri Fox in the business office at sfox@btfiloh.org or 410-413-2208.

We hope you like these new convenience features. As always, we appreciate your feedback and ideas.

TERMS OF ENDEARMENT

Outgoing shul Board Chair Neil Sweren and President Gary Eidelman share reflections on their extraordinary tenures as our shul celebrated its 100th birthday and ushered in new leadership.

Beth Tfiloh Congregation Board Chair 2021-23

Standing in our boardroom scanning the portraits of our early leadership, I can’t help but wonder what they might want to share with us. What challenges did they face? What difficult decisions did they have to make? What pivotal roles did they play in bringing us to this point? Who were these men and women?

In most cases, we can only imagine, but I am in awe when considering their contributions and sacrifices, what they built for us, and for the incredible support many of those who are still with us continue to selflessly offer. The enormity of time, effort, and money that they and many others have invested in Beth Tfiloh over the last hundred years is tremendous and should not be forgotten or taken for granted.

For my part, I can only tell you what an honor it has been and how lucky I feel to have served as board chair at this point in our congregation’s history. To help lead during a return to normalcy following a few very challenging pandemic years, our centennial celebration, significant staff and clergy transitions, and the significant growth of our young family membership base has been a privilege. There is more

work to do for sure, but much has been accomplished during our term, and there are many exciting plans in the works for our future. In truth though, I can take credit for very little when it comes to our accomplishments.

Everything that happens at Beth Tfiloh Congregation happens because of the efforts of an incredible team of staff and clergy led by Rabbi Posner and Executive Director Dan Silien. In their interactions with me personally, I have found our professional leadership team to be thoughtful, respectful, careful, and open-minded. They seek input, listen to opposing points of view, learn from their mistakes and care deeply for the continued success and growth of our congregation. I could not be more grateful for the opportunity to work side-by-side with this amazing team of professionals over the past two years. Thank you!

I can’t name everyone in the space allotted, but I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge how thankful I am for the support of my family, my business partner, and for the privilege of serving alongside Gary Eidelman, our congregation president these past two years. Ours was a model of cooperation and teamwork and to Gary, I owe a debt of gratitude. Thank you to my executive vice president,

Michael Bresler, for all your support and for being a great sounding board for me. I could not be more confident our congregation will be in good hands under your leadership.

About those portraits in the board room… We can’t be certain what those early leaders of our congregation who have long since passed would think of where we are and what we have become. I’d like to think they would be proud to know we are still here, evolving, thriving, and serving the community, and happy to know that their efforts have paid dividends all these years. May their neshamas have an aliyah.

BETH TFILOH BULLETIN SUMMER 2023 A 5783 4
Neil Sweren

Gary Eidelman, Beth Tfiloh Congregation President, 2021-23

With this closing column, I choose not to list all that lay leaders and professionals have accomplished over the last two years. After all, we lead at a distinct time and Beth Tfiloh has 101 years of accomplishments and leaders to brag about. Don’t believe me? Then just stroll down the magnificent history corridor in the lobby, or read legendary names on portraits in the Spector.

Instead, I choose to focus on our future, and the word “Kadima,” meaning “forward.” While some congregations continue to struggle with apathy, lack of spiritual interest, and Covid’s impact on engagement, we choose to move forward and not rest on the past. Membership that had been stagnant is growing. New members, and those returning, equate to materially increased attendance on Shabbat services in the Sanctuary and Chapel. Nothing warms the heart more than seeing strollers and scooters competing for space with walkers and wheelchairs! We want and need both.

The Religious Services Committee’s charge is to work with the clergy to determine the “conduct of the religious services of the Congregation.” Do you know why we

are in

kadima mode?

Because we have the best in the business – the dream team lineup of Rabbis

Posner, Wohlberg, Yoggev, Goldstein, Wecker, Chazzan Albrecht and now Chazzan Schachter! They are here for us 24/7. I am deeply grateful for their friendship.

Reflections should reflect gratitude. Enough cannot be said about our wonderful staff, with a particular shout out to Dan Silien, our outstanding Executive Director. Thanks to the Religious Services Committee (and in particular all of the past presidents) who were engaged, thoughtful and willing to express ideas to make our services meaningful, impactful and relevant. Special thanks to the Chazzan Search Committee, which worked tirelessly for over a year. Shabbat and Yom Tov services simply do not happen without Gabbai Searle Mitnick and his stellar team of assistant gabbaim, Floor Gabbais Harry Sommer and Alan Maier, and all those who run our High Holiday services. Yasher koach to President Benny Sobol, First Vice President Lauren Braunstein ’03, Second Vice President Peter Jay and Secretary Teri Gitlitz. Our leadership future is bright indeed.

I was fortunate when I was board chair to have Stan Weintraub as my president. I was fortunate as the president to have Neil Sweren as my board chair. They are two of the finest people I know. Words alone cannot express how lucky I was to have them as my partners on this journey.

Of course, I need to thank my wife Jill and our kids. It is impossible to be involved in leadership at Beth Tfiloh without having the love and support of one’s family. Any success achieved in this role is because of them.

And to you, our congregants, it has been an honor and privilege to help lead Beth Tfiloh into its second century. Thank you. To each and every one of you, please continue to support Beth Tfiloh with your time and presence. Money helps too! KADIMA!

SEEING GODLINESS in OTHERS

We Are All in This Together

We all know the Golden Rule:

“ ‘Love your fellow as yourself.’ R. Akiva says: this is a fundamental principle of the Torah.”

But less well known is that another great sage, Ben Azzai, disagreed. He argued that a different pasuk was more important:

What is so significant about this pasuk? It would seem that the import of this pasuk comes from the concluding words that tell us that people were created in the image of God. Ben Azzai is arguing that if we have to choose one concept as our guiding principle it should not be: “love your fellow as yourself.” Instead, we should be directed by the notion that God made each of us in God’s image. By making this shift, Ben Azzai has opened our eyes to a whole new way of looking at others, at ourselves, and at the world.

Ben Azzai says: “This is the numeration of the generations of Adam, when God created humankind, it was made in the likeness of God.” This is an even greater principle (than love your fellow as yourself).

n I am not only treating you as I would like to be treated. I am treating you as I would treat a being that is made in God’s image.

n I may not love you, as Rabbi Akiva asks us to do. But I will treat you with the dignity and respect that a Godly being deserves.

n I too, am created in the image of God, and deserve respect from others and from myself.

n Even if you and I are different, we are still both created in the image of God.

Ben Azzai’s principle ought to affect every single interaction that we have. Sometimes it is easy to see the Godliness in others. Perhaps we see God’s image in a loved one’s gaze, in a baby’s eyes, or in a kind gesture from a stranger. But sometimes it is harder to see God’s image in other people. When people look different than us, or act or think in ways that we don’t like, it is easy not to see the divinity within them. However, we are, all of us, created in the Divine image.

Rabbi Yitz Greenberg taught that to be created in the image of God is to be endowed with three fundamental dignities: uniqueness, infinite value, and equality. What would it mean to see the world through this prism? What would it mean to be a part of a community that operates on this principle?

I’d like to think that at Beth Tfiloh we are driven by our recognition of the Divine image within all others. We strive to be a place where each of our members (and those who aren’t yet members!) can bring their authentic selves and feel comfortable, respected, and accepted. Everyone deserves these basic rights. God did not choose only some people to be created in God’s image. ALL people were created with Godliness. Divinity doesn’t divide down lines of religious practice, Judaic background, physical appearance, sexual orientation, or political affiliation.

I ask that you please give this some thought, especially next time you are in shul. Ask yourself:

n How can I treat others with the dignity and respect they deserve, as people created in God’s image?

n How can I carry myself in a way that helps to highlight the Divine image in myself and in others?

n What am I doing to contribute to the Godliness contained within this space?

Treating others with respect and dignity is not only a matter of being kind. It is a religious imperative. We are all in this together.

Sunday, July 30, 7:30 pm

Following just days after the saddest time on the Jewish calendar, the Gemara considers Tu B’av to be one of the two happiest days of the year. Some consider it the “Jewish Valentine’s Day,” when singles aim to find their soulmates. Is that true, or does it have a deeper meaning?

Join us for an outdoor BBQ, drinks, and songs as we take a deeper look at the celebration of Tu B’av with Rabbi Posner.

The Radical Power of Welcoming

As you go through life, it is almost a guarantee that at some point you will feel like an outsider. Think back for a moment to your first day at a new school or job, or that time you went to a party where you didn’t know anyone, or when you navigated unfamiliar languages and customs when traveling abroad. If we are lucky, though, we can each recall a moment when that uncomfortable experience shifted: when someone noticed us feeling

awkward and extended a hand or a hello. Suddenly, we felt less lost and less alone thanks to the actions of a stranger.

As simple as it seems, the act of welcoming is not always intuitive. It is counter-cultural in today’s America, where we are highly individualistic and typically do not engage with strangers.

Because of this, welcoming requires some vulnerability and stepping outside

of our comfort zone. From a Jewish perspective, welcoming and hospitality are central values exemplified by the paradigms of Abraham and Sarah. The Talmud makes the following radical statement: “Welcoming guests is greater than welcoming the presence of Shechinah (God)” (Shabbat 127a). Why is welcoming so important in Judaism? As Rabbi Posner discusses in his article (p. 6), welcoming is an act of acknowledging

the divinity and value of every person. But moreover, as Abraham modeled, it is through welcoming and personal connections that we grow strong sacred communities. This is as true now as it was in the ancient near east; Jewish community thrives when we foster a culture of welcoming.

This year, we have worked diligently to reach out to our congregation through personal invitations from friends, Rabbis, or staff members to join us on a Shabbat or at a program. That is because we want every one of our community members to feel valued and welcome at BT — but we need your help to make this a reality. “Come sit with me” –Dr. Ron Wolfson shares that these are some of the most powerful words we can say to someone at synagogue.

Though many of us feel at home at BT, synagogue can also be a place where newcomers and even long-time members can feel like outsiders. With so much happening in our own lives, we can forget to look for those who are less comfortable or less connected and remember that we were once strangers, too. We must remember that we each have the immense and holy power to make someone else feel welcome.

BT has a wonderful and strong tradition of being a place where all can feel welcome. But welcoming, like Abraham standing at the opening of his tent searching for visitors, must always be a proactive endeavor. This year, join us in building on BT’s foundation and embracing the radical power of welcoming in our community.

Rabbi Dr. Eli and Phaygi Yoggev addressed the questions most frequently asked of an Orthodox vegan rabbi and reflected on their “mixed” (meat/vegan) marriage before preparing their favorite tofu recipes for Empty Nester Chavurah members to taste. To join the Empty Nester Chavurah for monthly discussions, socialization, and activities, contact Roberta Katz, rkatz@btfiloh.org.

Rabbi Yosef Furman's Daf Yomi* class made a dual siyum celebrating the completion of masechtot (tractates) Nazir and Sotah. All are welcome to join Daf Yomi! Check bethtfiloh.com/shulcalendar for details. *Daf Yomi is the internationally known program which undertakes a study of a page of the Talmud every day, with the entire cycle taking 7 ½ years to complete.

Shefler. Our BT women baked brownies and assembled packages for Jewish Caring Network client families experiencing long-term illnesses at the Mother's Day Chesed Bake.

BT’s 75th Israel Birthday Bash was Baltimore’s largest Yom HaAtzma'ut night event, with 1,000 guests enjoying delicious Israeli food and drink, crafts and henna decorating as they celebrated their love for Israel. This celebration was made possible through the generosity of the Haron & Rachel Dahan Foundation.

13 SUMMER 2023 A 5783 BETH TFILOH BULLETIN
Purim 5783 was a spectacular celebration for the entire BT community, filled with excitement, energy, laughter and joy, which was kicked off with our Grandparent & Me Hamantaschen Bake.

THE OPERATIVE WORD

The good news is that we already built it! Beth Tfiloh is a thriving, vibrant shul with programs, activities, services and spiritual offerings to meet the needs of our entire community. An opportunity for our community to grow even stronger is to engage our members to build a vibrant, diverse, passionate core of volunteers to serve on our committees — outside of our amazing Board and Religious Services Committee members! Why is this important? Because our volunteer committees help our clergy and staff ensure we are meeting the needs of our community, and our volunteer committees help determine BT’s amazing future!

Below is a list of many of BT’s current committees, along with a brief description of their role. If you are interested in serving on any of these committees or getting additional information, please contact Philippa Lichterman, our special projects coordinator, at plichteman@ btfiloh.org. These do not require a significant amount of your time, with many meeting only a handful of times during the year. Our most significant needs right now are for people to join our Chesed, Food Service, and Synagogue Life committees (see below).

Camp: This group meets approximately once a month to help ensure BT Camps is the best it can be each and every summer!

Cemetery: Our dedicated cemetery committee members work to set policies for our two cemeteries and help ensure the cemeteries are financially sound and well-maintained. This group meets approximately 2-3 times/year.

Chesed: This is a relatively new committee, charged with planning and coordinating meaningful chesed (lovingkindness) opportunities that benefit those in need in the BT community and beyond. Examples include visiting the ill, organizing meal trains, creating packages for isolated seniors, and participating in projects in greater Baltimore.

Development: This committee works with representatives from both the shul and school communities, in tandem with our team of development professionals, to work on fundraising efforts and to develop new efforts to keep our institution financially sound.

Food Service: This is a newly formed task force, initially charged with examining our current kiddush food and service practices. The goal is to provide recommendations for how both can be improved, with additional related topics coming soon. This is a great opportunity for anyone with food service or other related expertise, although not a requirement.

Governance: This committee oversees board recruitment, engagement and retention, makes recommendations to the Board of Directors for amending the Congregation’s bylaws to keep them up to date, and otherwise reviews and updates the Congregation’s governance mechanisms.

Mercaz/Adult Education: Advises staff on topics and issues related to our top-notch adult education programs.

Properties & Facilities: In conjunction with representatives from the school, this committee monitors all of our property and facility interests. This is a great opportunity for anyone with real estate, construction, or other related expertise, although not a requirement.

Synagogue Life: One of our most important committees, this group is charged with helping our members feel engaged and welcomed at BT. If you are interested and willing to give some of your time, PLEASE consider joining us!

Young Family Welcome: This group works to create an atmosphere of welcoming among young families by reaching out to new families, and developing initiatives to build community and connections.

Youth & Family Activities: While currently not active, we would welcome participants who want to help bring this group back to life and help determine its mission and goals.

The list above is just a sample of what we offer. Other committees that are not currently accepting new members (but might be in the future!) include: Finance, Religious Services, Sanctuary Renovations, and Dues & High Holiday Costs. In addition, BT Men and Sisterhood are always looking for people to get involved!

If you have particular expertise or knowledge that would benefit any of the above, or if you are simply passionate about a subject, please consider lending your talents. Even if a committee doesn’t have availability right now, we would love to hear about your interest and keep you in mind as we move forward. You are key to our success!

* Interesting side note – The actual quote is “If you build it, he will come.” but the quote has been altered over time to apply in a much broader way by substituting they for he!
