BETH TFILOH CONGREGATION | CELEBRATING THE JOY OF JUDAISM, EMBRACING ALL JEWS

CELEBRATING OUR LEGACY, BUILDING OUR FUTURE

A New Look for the Beth Tfiloh Community Centennial

RABBI’S CORNER RISKY BUSINESS By Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg

“Hiney Yom Hadin – Behold the Day of Judgement has arrived.” These words, taken from the Unetane Tokef High Holy Day prayer, have taken on new meaning in the year of the coronavirus. The Day of Judgement has come early. Right now we have to decide our own fate: Who shall come to shul… and who will stay home? After all the social distancing, vaccines, and masks, few of us feel totally secure. Wherever we go and whatever we do carries a risk. We all know the risks that come from skydiving, bungee jumping, and tightrope walking, but there are also risks in driving a car, crossing the street, or taking a shower. Risk is everywhere! How are we to decide which are reasonable and which are not? Judaism has several commandments regarding personal safety, and yet the Talmud asks in several places why certain potentially dangerous actions are permitted. The Talmud asks, “Why does the worker climb the tree and risk his life? Is it not to earn his wages?” Certain risks have to be taken! I, for one, look forward to taking the risk and being in shul on Rosh Hashanah. I take the risk because I take pills every day, and there, too, is a risk. Every day I take 10 pills. One of the pills is Lodine, also known as etodalac, for arthritic pain. I looked up the warning that comes with the prescription: Common side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, upset stomach, stomach pain, heartburn, bloating, gas, headache, dizziness, nervousness, sore throat, stuffy nose, skin itching, rash, blurred vision, ringing in the ears, skin changes, paleness, blisters, hives, weight gain, swelling, shortness of breath, unusual bleeding, jaundice, pain with urination, bloody urine, back pain, heart attack, stroke and coma.

And I’m putting this inside of me every day?

Neil Sweren, Board Chair

So, why do I take the pill? Because my doctor tells me to! And Jewish law tells me that you should listen to your doctor! Should you come to shul on the High Holy Days? Why not listen to the rabbi! This is Beth Tfiloh’s centennial year and a special year in my life as your rabbi. Start the year with us thanking God, “Sh’hechiyanu,” who has kept us alive and enabled us to reach this time in our lives.

2021derful Graduates! We are so proud of our Class of 2021, whose members were accepted to the 95 colleges and universities and 13 Israel programs listed below, and awarded more than $5 million in merit scholarships. In a year of increased competition and lower acceptance rates nationwide, 100% of our seniors who applied to college received an acceptance at a school of their choice. Additionally, 80% of our seniors who applied to University of Maryland, College Park, were accepted — nearly double UMD’s 44% admissions rate.

CELEBRATING OUR A New Look for the Beth Tfiloh Community Centennial

LEGACY,

For 100 years, the Beth Tfiloh community has stayed true to its mission: Providing an inclusive, welcoming Jewish environment, embracing and engaging a religiously diverse community, and supporting and celebrating Israel. From its founding in 1921 as the first synagogue in Baltimore’s Forest Park neighborhood to its home today in Pikesville, Beth Tfiloh has always been on the forefront of religious innovation and inclusion that balances Jewish law and tradition with the challenges and opportunities of modern life. Beth Tfiloh has established an unparalleled legacy as a nexus of Jewish life in Baltimore. As the largest Modern Orthodox congregation in North America, our synagogue fosters personal growth while creating a lifelong sense of belonging. Through our extraordinary clergy and educators, and worldrenowned educational programming for children and adults, Beth Tfiloh’s impact extends far beyond Old Court Road. Our school is the pipeline for future Jewish leaders, providing nearly 1,000 students each year with a rigorous education rooted in Torah and Jewish values.

What does the next century of Beth Tfiloh look like? Jewish life is constantly evolving. We must continuously adapt to meet the changing religious, spiritual, social, emotional, and educational needs of the next generation of Jewish children and adults.

BETH TFILOH BULLETIN

That means making shul – on Shabbat, holidays, or any day of the week – as meaningful and welcoming as possible. That means making our Jewish day school as competitive, accessible and effective as possible, so it remains an attractive option for the broadest swathe of our Jewish community’s children. That means recruiting and retaining the highest caliber of educators and staff and investing in their professional growth. That means making synagogue membership and Jewish day school tuition affordable, so that finances are never an obstacle to full communal participation. That means making our physical space as inviting, comfortable and modern as possible, so that it reflects and fosters the excellence of our shul and school programs.

Beth Tfiloh has established an unparalleled legacy as a nexus of Jewish life in Baltimore. As the largest Modern Orthodox congregation in North America, our synagogue fosters personal growth while creating a lifelong sense of belonging.

BUILDING OUR

FUTURE A new look for a new era

Our approaching centennial is the perfect time to unite the Beth Tfiloh community — our synagogue and school — with one visual identity. This new look reflects Beth Tfiloh’s history, mission, culture and values. It celebrates our Beth Tfiloh community’s strength and vitality as a cohesive whole and our proud legacy of joyful, inclusive Judaism. It captures the energy and excitement of our limitless future. Our new visual identity captures our home’s most recognizable feature – the shul’s roof, the “big tent” that unites our inclusive, diverse community. The icon’s upward movement inspires both awe and excitement. The rooflines resemble hands reaching heaven-ward in unison towards a Jewish star, the historic symbol of the Jewish people.

It is under that iconic roof that our Beth Tfiloh community gathers to daven and hear words of inspiration on Shabbat and holidays. It is where we celebrate milestones, like bris milahs and baby namings, bar and bat mitzvahs, and weddings. It is where we give our first graders their siddurim and shake their hands 11 years later as they receive their diplomas at high school graduation. Stay tuned for details about this historic yearlong celebration! May we continue to celebrate many great achievements and joyful occasions under this roof for years to come. Welcome to the new era of Beth Tfiloh.
