RABBI’S CORNER PURIM: WHEN THE MASK COMES OFF By Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg
For us as Jews, Purim came early this year. Indeed, we have been observing an aspect of Purim since last Purim itself! A popular song describing Purim has the words: “Chag Purim, chag Purim, chag gadol layehudim masechot ra’ashanim shirim verikudim – Purim time, Purim time, a great festival for the Jewish people … masks, noise makers, songs and dances.” Maybe not the songs and dances, but the masks have been on our faces throughout the year. The masks, while absolutely necessary, have turned so much upside down. As someone put it: “Never in a million years could I have imagined I would go up to a bank teller wearing a mask and ask for money!” Yet, as necessary as masks are these days, we pay a price for wearing them. The Wall Street Journal headlined an article: “Covid Facemasks are Disrupting a Key Tool of Human Communications.” What is it that is being disrupted? We can’t see each other’s facial expressions, “confusing our ability to distinguish disgust from anger, or happiness from indifference.” According to researchers, no other creature relies so much on facial expressions to communicate as a human being. With a mask on, it is impossible for others to know who you really are! With this in mind, it’s interesting to note that in the Torah, the holiest day of the year, the Day of Atonement, is always called Yom Kippurim. This name, Yom Kippurim, led the sages to make a very strange pun. They said that Yom Kippurim can be read as “Yom k’Purim – this day is like Purim.” What on earth do these two days have in common that our sages would make such a strange pun? A great rabbi once answered that the two days have one thing in common: the wearing of a mask. On Purim, we put one on. On Yom Kippurim, we take one off. Yes, there has to be a time when we have to confront our real selves … the selves that nobody else knows. This year of the coronavirus has given us much time for thought and introspection. Have we used any of that time to take off our mask and look at ourselves? Do we like what we see? Is there anything that we can change? How do we look to others? These are all questions waiting for answers. Let’s not wait for Yom Kippur … hopefully by then, we will all have our masks off and people will really get to know us once again. Until then: “To thine own self be true.”

ON TOPIC - PURIM THE FIVE M’S OF PURIM On Purim, we (typically) sit in shul, graggers in hand, and celebrate our salvation in Shushan and the downfall of our enemy, Haman. However, we often forget to ask: how did we get into this predicament in the first place? Our sages teach us that Hashem deals with Am Yisrael “measure for measure.” Which culpable behavior brought about this horrifying threat in the first place?
We read the Megillah to remind us of these unifying lessons. We join together for a feast, exchange food items, and give presents to those in need in order to strengthen our communal bond. And we put on masks to help us push beyond external appearances that at times pose an obstacle to connection.
One answer is that in that time the Jews were not unified as a nation. Haman even attested to this when he said, “There is one nation that is scattered and separate” (Esther 3:8). Our uniting in prayer and sackcloth in response to Haman’s decree in the end helped avert this judgement.
Megillah: We recite three blessings over the Megillah and read it in the night and day.
This is a central reason why we perform four special mitzvahs and get dressed up in costume on Purim, what I like to call the Five “M”s of Purim (each beginning with the letter M): to rectify this sin by bringing Jews together today.
With this in mind, let’s review some laws connected to each one of the five “M”s:
Meal (“seudah” in Hebrew): We enjoy a feast on Purim day. Wine is consumed (at least more than usual, many drink more) and words of Torah are shared. It is preferable to include meat and bread in this meal. Mishloach Manot (“gift sending”): On Purim day, we exchange at least two different ready-to-eat foods or drinks (learned from the word manot, which is plural) to one person.
FEBRUARY • MARCH 2021 A ADAR-NISSAN 5781
Matanot Le’evyonim (“gifts for the poor”): On Purim day, we deliver at least two monetary gifts (learned from the plural matanot, gifts) to two different people (learned from the plural evyonim, poor)—one per person in need. The more gifts we send, the better! Masks: A reminder to not limit this custom to medical masks alone! Be creative with this as it reminds us how everything flipped around for the Jews during Purim (Esther 6:11). May things “flip around” for us this year and may this spirit of unity accompany as we join together for good things, healthy and in-person, over the months to come. Purim sameach!

The Shabbat Experience: The Gift That Keeps on Giving
How do you take care of yourself when balancing the competing demands of work and family, and whatever else life throws at you? By giving yourself a break now and then. Once a week, to be exact. “As we were planning all of our virtual Chanukah festivities, I began to think about the long winter ahead – how could we keep our BT family connected during this potentially isolating time?” asked Rabbi Chai Posner. “Shabbat. Shabbat was the answer.” The shul clergy and staff organized the Shabbat Experience, a monthlong initiative that gave BT community members numerous ways to learn about and participate in different parts of Shabbat — in whichever way was most comfortable for them. Through live and pre-recorded video classes, programs and activities, our members developed stronger connections to Shabbat — and to each other. Several members shared

part of something much greater,” said Michelle.
“I was intrigued with the program which offered a way to keep connected to BT and continue to make Shabbat feel special,” said Orit Benor-Cohen. She and her husband, Ben, enjoyed reading the divrei Torah in the Table Talk Guide, which prompted interesting discussions. Michelle and Harry Auster used the Guide to teach their children, Ethan and Emily, about the parshah. “It’s exciting to share stories from the weekly parshah and begin teaching them about our Jewish history, helping them see that they are
“Rabbi Wohlberg’s video sermons are the next best thing to being in shul and listening to him,” shared Robert Cohen, who was inspired by one video to unplug for Shabbat. “It took some effort on my part, but I found that it gave me a lot of time to think and reflect about Shabbos and myself.” Linda Hurwitz never missed a video class from Rabbi Wohlberg and Rabbi Posner. “Each one of them has enhanced my understanding and made my Shabbat

I now hold the wine cup a bit differently due to Rabbi Wohlberg’s lesson and know why we cover the challah: to remember the mannah in the desert.” Her daughter, Lauren Braunstein ’03, joined Rabbi Posner’s weekly Lunch and Learn series to “both learn and refresh my understanding of the sources and application of the laws regarding Shabbat food preparation and cooking,” she explained. “As a mommy with curious kiddos, I [want to] make sure I’m following Halacha and can explain the reasons behind what we do to create a shomer Shabbat environment for my family.” Lauren found Rabbi Posner’s insights helpful, and the learning environment engaging. “What I learned will definitely enhance my Shabbat in a meaningful way moving forward.” Neil Sweren, executive vice chair of the shul’s Board of Directors, agreed. “We recently made our kitchen kosher and are still learning all the rules of preparing Shabbat meals. Rabbi Posner made a complex topic both accessible and interesting.” Sally Davis learned delicious new ideas at the Challah Bake with Emily Isak. “I definitely learned some new tips and I’ve been wanting to learn the four-strand braid.” Her husband, BT Congregation president Dr. Ron Davis, gives her new challah recipes two thumbs up. Said Ron (through a mouthful of challah), “Dith ith deh betht challah eveh!” Ron reports that the challah was gone before Shabbat began.
Linda Hurwitz, Ellen Cohen, Shelley Kaye, and the Amman ladies – BT Lower School art teacher Ivy and her kids, Chloe ’29 and Jordyn ’31 – were among the BT shul members who paired up to bring Shabbat joy to Levindale and North Oaks residents through art.
Rachel and Al Meisels enjoyed the prerecorded Shabbat service highlights. “The Kabbalat Shabbat and especially the Shabbat morning services were so beautiful,” said Rachel. “The interpretations of the prayers added so much meaning. We were truly moved by the words of our wonderful rabbis and the singing of our incomparable chazzan.” Pam Diener appreciated the Shabbat Experience resources. “Not living in the area or being able to go to local shuls have made me even more appreciative and grateful to BT for stepping up and sponsoring so many high-quality events and videos during the pandemic.” Robert

Cohen also enjoyed the service highlights, which he turned into duets. “I play the video of the Chazzan singing Kabbalat Shabbat with the volume cranked up and sing along with him.” The Shabbat Experience provided opportunities for growth and connection for BT members of all ages and observance levels. For Robert, programs like these, as well as everyday activities like davening as a community on Zoom, has had a tremendous impact on him this year. “It goes to show that we really are a Beth Tfiloh family,” he said. “I’m very grateful for the connection that it provides.” The Austers loved the musical Havdallah with Shlomo Katz, a favorite in their house. “We love feeling connected to BT despite the challenges that Covid has presented this year,” said Michelle Auster. “When we see opportunities arise that we know the kids will enjoy, we do our best to join in.” “I truly appreciate all of the hard work the rabbis and staff put into the Shabbat experience,” said Linda Hurwitz. “Through the Shabbat Experience we have all been able to be more connected with our synagogue, the prayers, and Shabbat. Thank you, Beth Tfiloh!”

PHILANTHROPY & GIVING Ricka Neuman and Ian Neuman: Sharing the Shabbat Experience Shabbat is the essential Jewish experience for siblings and Beth Tfiloh shul members Ian and Ricka Neuman, thanks to their parents, Phyllis and Nelson Neuman. “For as long as I can remember, Shabbat always had a special place in our family — especially Friday night,” said Ian. “Even though we were not the most religious, we always did Friday night with candle lighting, Kiddush, challah, and Birkat Hamazon.” The Neumans reminisce about Shabbat dinners overflowing with friends, food, and boisterous conversation. “Friday night dinners are the time to sit around the table, catch up with the events of the week, and talk, talk, talk,” shared Ricka. “Growing up, it also meant our extended family and friends joining us, sometime for dinner and sometimes after dinner, to participate in the conversations. The Neuman House on a Friday night was the place to be for all of my friends, always!” When Ricka started dating her now husband, Ted Niederman, he was initiated in the Neuman Shabbat dinner ritual. “The first experience was loud and overwhelming for him, but he continued to attend. I knew he had ‘gotten it’ the first Friday night I was out of town for work and he went to dinner without me. He rarely missed a Friday night dinner after that.” Phyllis continued to host Friday night dinner for her family even after Nelson passed away until she was no longer able. Shabbat is so important to the Neuman
family – including brother Jonathan and their late sister Roberta a”h – that they collectively created the Nelson Neuman Kiddush Fund. This fund helps defray the cost of any unsponsored Kiddushes, uniting the Beth Tfiloh community for a light meal and socializing after Shabbat morning services. When asked if they would like to sponsor Beth Tfiloh’s monthlong Shabbat Experience throughout January, they immediately agreed. “We wanted help others experience the joy of Shabbat that our parents instilled in us. It was a fitting tribute to our beloved parents and our sister, Roberta, who passed away last year,” said Ian.
“For me, Shabbat means a break from my usual hectic, busy, frenetic life,” said Ricka. “It is an opportunity to have time for family, friends and myself. I wanted other BT community members to enjoy that weekly respite as well.” They also wanted to help fellow BT community members stay connected to Beth Tfiloh throughout Covid, like there were. Daily minyanim, challah bakes, regular email updates, and shul committee meetings are just some of the ways Ricka and Ian have stayed involved over the past few months. “I am amazed at the depth and breadth of what BT is offering to congregants,” Ricka said. “There is something for everyone.”
