BT parents give our day school top marks in recent survey Parents of Beth Tfiloh day school students participated in an online Parent Survey, which was completed last fall. The survey was conducted to provide data for our school’s re-accreditation Self-Study required by the Association of Independent Maryland Schools (AIMS). Measuring Success, LLC, an independent survey firm that specializes in Jewish organizations, administered the survey. Over 32,000 parents from 90 Jewish day schools and yeshivot across North America have participated in this survey over the past 6 years. We are proud to report a 72% response rate among our parents; this level of participation reflects the commitment of our parent community. The school’s administration and lay leaders recently reviewed the survey findings with a Measuring Success consultant. The Parent Survey was designed to help our school understand and/or identify: • Demographic trends • Financial sustainability • Areas of strength and weakness • How our school compares to other schools • Perceived value of our school • Parent understanding of our school’s mission • Changes in parent perception since our prior parent survey in 2011

The study’s outcome variable considers a parent’s likelihood to recommend the school to a friend. This is based on previous studies that

HIGH SCHOOL HISTORY Mrs. Allen’s ninth grade World History classes created museumworthy timelines of the Renaissance through the Scientific Revolution. MIDDLE SCHOOL TABLETS - As part of the eighth grade’s exploration of the civilizations of Southwest Asia, the students inscribed their names in Cuneiform on clay ancestry tablets.

2ND GRADERS received their first chumashim at the Chumash Program. Special thanks to Mrs. Deborah Gersuk Mitnick and Mr. Searle E. Mitnick, who endowed our Chumash Program, and whosegenerous gift will provide chumashim for many future generations of BT second grade students.

ROBOTICS - Middle School students are exploring engineering principles in their new Robotics Club using the VEX Robotics Design System, a curriculum developed by the Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy.

PRESCHOOL - Eli C. ‘31’s Torah creation inspired a class-wide exploration of sifrei Torah – Torah scrolls – that led the class into the Dahan Sanctuary to see and read from a real Torah with Rabbi Chai Posner!

THIRD GRADERS learned what it's like to immigrate to a new country from their classmates' parents who have moved here from Israel, Ukraine, Moldova, Iran and Azerbaijan.

Development News The Pearlstone family name is synonymous with Jewish Baltimore. With four generations of Pearlstone men serving in leadership roles at The Associated and at many other organizations in both the Jewish and greater Baltimore community—including The Pearlstone Conference and Retreat Center—the Pearlstone family has made community leadership a family legacy. So when P. J. and Karen Pearlstone moved back to Baltimore from Florida in 2007, it was only natural for P. J. to get involved in a leadership capacity throughout the community, backed by the support of Karen, who keeps the family on track at home. P. J. currently serves on Beth Tfiloh School’s Board of Trustees; he also recently served on the School’s Affordability Task Force, which concluded in the Spring of 2014. In addition, P. J. serves on numerous local boards including The Associated, The Pearlstone Center, and Sinai Hospital. He also is a member of the National Council of AIPAC and of the Jewish Federation of North America’s

Pearlstone National Young Leadership Cabinet. He notes that while serving as Pearlstone’s Board President it had “been especially gratifying to help facilitate the newlyannounced partnership between Pearlstone and BT to green the school.” The Pearlstones’ BT connection began when they were married by Rabbi

Mitchell Wohlberg in 1999. When they moved back to Baltimore, they reflexively enrolled their son, Zachary, at The Park School – the alma mater of both P. J. and his father, Richard, while Jordan attended preschool at the JCC. “Jordan loved the Jewish aspect of his preschool,” remembers P. J., “but we felt like he needed more structure and we had heard great things about BT.” After touring BT, they were so impressed that they not only enrolled Jordan but transferred Zachary as well. “We felt that a Beth Tfiloh education would help shape their Jewish identity as well as provide a strong moral foundation for them.” Five years later, their love for BT School and Congregation has only grown. “Beth Tfiloh provides a challenging, nurturing, and spiritual environment for both of our kids,” says Karen. “We are confident that the education they are receiving will create a generation of passionate, thoughtful, forward thinking leaders for the future who care deeply for their community and the world around them.” And their kids love BT as much as they do. “It’s great how much they love going to Beth Tfiloh whether it is at school or Shabbat services,” comments P. J. “It’s just a really special place–we feel such a connection to everyone there–from Rabbi Wohlberg, Rabbi Posner, Rabbi Wecker and Mrs. Schorr to all their teachers and their friends’ families. It gives us much joy and pride to see our children thriving and engaged. They feel loved and cared for. She adds, “It will also allow Beth Tfiloh to continue to invest into the School and Congregation to make them even better.”

Ensuring their legacy of Jewish engagement and leadership is critical to the Pearlstones. “We feel it is important to pass on our Jewish identity, affiliation with Israel, and involvement to the Jewish community l’dor v’dor–for our children and the generation that follows as it was shown to us by example from our parents, and grandparents.”
