School News Role Models: Seniors & Middle Schoolers Discuss the Challenges of Adolescence A group of senior girls from Mrs. Schorr’s davening group partnered with the 7th and 8th grade girls to participate in a lunchtime mentorship program. In small groups, the girls spoke candidly about contemporary adolescent issues, such as cyberbullying, gossip, identity, and cliques. High School faculty members including Mrs. Jean Ginsberg, the Director of Guidance in the College Guidance Department, also attended the session and explained that the program aimed to prepare the Middle Schoolers for their upcoming High School transition. “Middle school is a time when you struggle to figure out who you are,” explained Jen R. ’14 to the room. “But in high school, you have so much more independence and you start to develop into someone different than you were in middle school.” At the end of the hour, almost every Middle School girl agreed that they gained new insights and perspectives from the session, and hoped to meet with the senior girls again in the near future.

Finding A Cure for Cancer: My Internship at Hopkins Cancer Research Lab By Dori C. ‘14 This past summer I interned in the Brem Brain Cancer Research Lab at Johns Hopkins. An abstract of the research I helped conduct was recently accepted for publication by the American Dori C. ‘14, member of a brain cancer research Association of Neuteam at Johns Hopkins rological Surgeons. this past summer Under the tutelage of Betty Tyler, Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery, and resident, Antonella Mangravaviti, I learned about 2-deoxyD-glucose (2DG), a synthetic glucose analog that inhibits glycolysis and causes ATP depletion, cell cycle inhibition, and eventually, cell death. We tested 2DG to see its possible application for the treatment of gliobastoma (brain tumors that are highly malignant). This study showed that 2DG might be a promising treatment strategy against malignant gliomas (tumors that directly arise from the central nervous system, brain or spinal cord, tissue). We suggested administering 2DG at higher dosages or in combination with other cytotoxic agents to obtain a beneficial antitumor effect when using certain chemo-resistant glioma models. I obtained this internship with the help of Mr. Burgess, Chair of the Beth Tfiloh Science Department, who put me in contact with Betty Tyler. Although my primary job was to administer drugs and debrain rats, I also learned about the different drugs administered and the statistics behind the study, and gained new insights and invaluable experience in the field. This past summer was an opportunity of a lifetime and I encourage other Beth Tfiloh students to take advantage of our High School’s science mentorship program.
