Sisterhood News On Wednesday, January 22, 2014 (snow date, February 5), Sisterhood will host Lunch and a Movie. Join us for a delightful meal, followed by the romantic comedy “Dorfman in Love.” Watch Shabbat handouts and posters for fees and reservation information. Save the date! All holiday gifts will be on sale in our Gift Shop at savings of 50, 30, and 20%. Discounts include all Chanukah, Purim, and Shabbat items. Among the new items is a travel mezuzah for your car. The new Koren Shabbat siddurim (regular and pocketsized, hard and soft covers) are now available. Over 35 cards were sent by the Chesed Committee to home-bound and ill shul members for the Chanukah holiday. Volunteers who can visit our members at their homes would be most appreciated, perhaps to talk, perhaps for a game of cards. Carol Oppenheim informs us that the Zumba schedule is now Wednesdays (toning) and Fridays (regular dance), both at 8:45 a.m. in the high school dance room. If you wish to join a class, please contact Carol at 410-363-2482 or caroloppenheim@yahoo.com first, in case of temporary schedule changes. Please consider joining Sisterhood for a meaningful contribution to the shul. We are actively soliciting “younger” members, and there is even a move afoot to create a sub-group of mothers and active working women

whose more age-specific fundraising abilities and desire for like-minded friendships could be satisfied. If a new adventure interests you, please contact Marcia Leavey (410-591-2229), Donna Belsky (410-653-6226), or Iris Pevner (410-486-8054).

Brotherhood News

As mentioned the Brotherhood is actively looking to support a Tikun Olam day in the spring time frame. If you know of an organization that could use Brotherhood volunteers for day please contact us at the email address below. Last June the Brotherhood spent a day volunteering at “Our Daily Bread” and it proved to be very beneficial for them and fulfilling for the Brotherhood volunteers. Don’t forget, if you are looking for a card to send someone in honor of a special occasion, please contact the synagogue office to purchase an S. Harold Cohen Scholarship Fund Card. These cards, which are just $10 apiece or four for $36, provide tuition support for deserving youngsters to attend the Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School. Additionally a wonderful way to honor or memorialize someone special is by purchasing a brick in the beautifully landscaped Brotherhood Brick Plaza, which is adjacent to the Rynd Family Room. Bricks cost just $90 and can be ordered through the Brotherhood telephone number and e-mail address listed immediately below. We strongly encourage all men to join us in the Brotherhood. Dues are nominal – just $36 per year and its rewarding to know that you are helping to make Beth Tfiloh a vibrant place. Please call the Brotherhood at 410-486-1900 Extension 238 or e-mail us at brotherhood@btfiloh.org if you would like to join or just participate in any of our events.

Fill the Void

Saturday, February 8, 7:30 pm

This award-winning Israeli drama is the first film directed by an Orthodox Israeli woman. In her remarkable debut feature film, Rama Burshtein tells the story of Shira, a young woman living in an ultraOrthodox enclave in Tel Aviv who confronts a choice not unlike those faced by heroines of Jane Austen novels and Hollywood romantic comedies: which man will she marry? For Shira, this agonizing question forces her to weigh the claims of family loyalty, religious duty and her own desires. This film is thrilling, completely unexpected and entirely believable. Clooney’s motley crew of art experts include Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Hugh Bonneville and John Goodman, plus Jean Dujardin, the Frenchman who won the best actor Oscar in 2012 for The Artist. Cate Blanchett plays French art historian Rose Valland, a member of the Resistance, whose story inspired the 1964 John Frankenheimer movie classic, The Train, which starred Burt Lancaster.
