Beth Tfiloh Inaugural Dahan Lecture: A Night to Remember Over 1,200 people came out to pay tribute to the memory of Haron Dahan, and to hear noted columnist and commentator, Dr. Charles Krauthammer, speak about the pressing political issues of our time, both domestic and international. It was a most informative and entertaining evening, including opening and closing remarks by Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg and Mrs. Zipora Schorr, and a Yom HaZikaron tribute by Hazzan Avi Albrecht.

Last Chance for Snowed-Out Film: It is not too late to see the twice-cancelled comedy film Dorfman in Love at the Closing Sisterhood Meeting, Monday, June 9, at 7:30 pm. The film will be shown in the Epstein Chapel, with a dessert reception to follow. This presentation is free and open to the public with a reservation. Gift Shop: Summer is nearly here, bringing special sales and discounts on much of the inventory. In our Shabbat handouts, we will announce several Gift Shop Super Sundays, with extended hours of sale from 10 am to 2 pm.

A native of Wilkes-Barre, PA, Mr. Kahan, who passed away in 2009, grew up in a very observant household. “People used to call him ‘rebbe’,” smiles his wife of 54 years, Ann. “His identity was strongly Jewish.” Tutored in Jewish studies by his father, his spiritual life as a Jew was the guiding force in Sam’s life.

Save the Date: We had such a good time at last year’s bingo event that Sisterhood has decided to host an encore night on Saturday evening, November 22, 2014. A big incentive to come is lots of useful, pretty, and cash prizes. Details to follow later in the year. Dor v’Dor: When a “younger” Beth Tfiloh member joins Sisterhood, the current members feel rejuvenated. Your presence will make an outstanding contribution to the continuation of Sisterhood’s good works. If you haven’t yet taken advantage of the special rates, please consider joining. “He loved the services here,” reflects Ann. “This is where he felt the most spiritual.” To commemorate his love of Beth Tfiloh, Ann’s gift to Beth Tfiloh’s Chazak Campaign was marked with a mezuzah dedicated in Sam’s honor. Why a mezuzah? “Sam kissed every mezuzah he ever passed!” says Ann. The mezuzah hangs on the entrance to the Synagogue lobby, waiting to greet all those who enter to daven, and serving as a reminder of Sam’s enduring legacy. “Sam was a true mentsch who loved being a part of our Congregation,” shares Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg. “He was a strong advocate of Jewish education and is still truly missed and fondly remembered. The mezuzah dedicated by his wife, Ann, is a fitting memorial to a most memorable person.” For more information about the Chazak Campaign, visit www.bethtfiloh.com/chazak or contact Mandi Miller, Director of Development, at 410-413-2399 or mmiller@btfiloh.org.

Beth Tfiloh PreSchool was selected as a model school for a special tour by Mr. Harold Grinspoon, founder of the PJ Library, together with members of the PJ Library staff and a group of Jewish educators visiting from Israel, Mexico and Argentina, as part of the PJ Library Annual International Conference. P.J. Library sends millions of free Jewish books to families every year, and has recently expanded their program to include “PJ Goes to School,” which provides a series of free values-based Jewish books and related resource materials for Jewish preschools. Lisa Litman, Director of PJ Goes to School, said that she selected Beth Tfiloh PreSchool because of its “forward-thinking pedagogic philosophies,” its teachers and administration with a “strong mission to enhance the Jewish content of the classroom and focus on Jewish values,” its “beautiful physical environment” and the “warm and welcoming school leadership.” Mr. Grinspoon is described by Mrs. Zipora Schorr as “a visionary and humble philanthropist who wants to

see the impact that his programs have made.” BT PreSchool Director, Mrs. Melissa Lebowitz, described how Mr. Grinspoon enjoyed interacting with our children, when visiting classrooms with the PJ delegation. “He asked the children to pick out their favorite books, and even had them jumping up and down with him. He was engaging and delightful,” she said. “PJ Library is one of very few programs that is truly making a difference in terms of Jewish identity and engagement,” said Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg. “We are honored to have the opportunity to host such a visionary leader as Harold Grinspoon.”

PJ LIBRARY VISIT - Gan Aleph students shared their favorite PJ Library books with Mr. Harold Grinspoon.

Avi Meyerstein ’95: Building Bridges to Peace in the Middle East By Alex R. ‘16 As a sophomore staff writer for the Beth Tfiloh E-Tone and Insight publications, I was honored to interview Mr. Avi Meyerstein, one of the newspaper’s original editors. A Beth Tfiloh alumnus of 1995 and attorney/sharheolder at Jackson Lewis P.C., Mr. Meyerstein is also founder of the Alliance for Middle East Peace (ALLMEP). This coalition of 80 organizations “[oversees] people-topeople coexistence, reconciliation, and cooperative activities on the ground… among Israelis, Palestinians, Arabs and Jews” according to its mission statement, ALLMEP also educates legislators, funders, and the international community on the need of people-topeople work in the Middle East. Regarding his years spent at Beth Tfiloh, Mr. Meyerstein fondly recalls the small but tightly-knit community woven together with a “very special feeling of closeness and approachability.” This environment where “affinity for Israel [was] in the drinking water” steadily deepened Mr. Meyerstein’s connection to the Jewish homeland, giving him outlets to explore his passion that bloomed during his years of high school. In the autumn of his junior year, the Beth Tfiloh faculty wheeled a television into the Beit Midrash so the students could witness the mesmerizing moment of Rabin and Arafat shaking hands in a sunny White House garden, causing politics and international relations to become “a focal point of [his] energy.” As a freshman at Columbia University, Mr. Meyerstein wrote and published a rebuttal to an op-ed in the Columbia newspaper that was critical of Israel and written by a Palestinian student. He began to debate the conflict’s issues with this student over email while simultaneously studying the IsraeliPalestinian conflict in his classes. Through this correspondence, Mr. Meyerstein discovered “there [was not only] a partner on the other side [but also] a lot of complexity to people figuring out how to move beyond the past.”

policy law firm several years later, learned of several organizations building cooperation between Israelis and Palestinians. Reaching out to these organizations, he offered his assistance, from Washington, to bring awareness to their missions. He brought them together and walked the halls of Congress with them to tell their stories. Thus, Mr. Meyerstein developed a coalition of grassroots organizations focused on bringing Israelis and Palestinians together . . .

An ALLMEP delegation, including founder Avi Meyerstein ‘95 (center) and Shaanan Meyerstein ‘01, met with former Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayad.
