Celebrating the Joy of Judaism, Embracing all Jews. ELUL 5768 SEPTEMBERADAR 2008 II 5774 MARCH 2014
New Friday Night Traditions Usher in a Spirited Shabbat at BT More BT members and families are discovering the special joy of welcoming Shabbat each week at Friday night services. Although the winter months have been challenging, with record cold weather and Shabbat beginning early, a number of recent enhancements to our Friday night Shabbat program are drawing more people each week to BT on Friday nights. Hazzan Avi Albrecht and specially selected guest leaders create the special joy and ruach of a Carlebach Kabalat Shabbat service, using the wonderful tunes of Shlomo Carlebach that have inspired and energized so many Jews around the world. The beauty of a Carlebach service is that the melodies are simple and infectious, HONORING
and can be easily sung and enjoyed even to those unfamiliar with the service. The result is hand-clapping and toe-tapping with a spontaneous break-out into dance as a regular part of this new Friday night tradition. If we’ve piqued your interest, you are welcome to hear a sampling of melodies at www.bethtfiloh.com/ singalong.
rabbis and synagogue. Join us for Friday nights at BT. It will lift your spirits, put a smile on your face, and kick off Shabbat in style and good company.
But this spirited Shabbat ritual doesn’t end at the conclusion of the Friday night service. Following services, everyone is welcomed into Rabbi Wohlberg’s office for a special opportunity to shmooze and celebrate Shabbat with an intimate Kiddush and sumptuous reception. A delectable assortment of nosherie and beverages are enjoyed by all, compliments of our

Speaker: Ilene Spector, Food Editor of the Baltimore Jewish Times; catering by Yaffa; choice of dessert, cake or fruit. Boutique, 11:00 am; luncheon, 12 pm. Gift shop: Purim is on its way (March 15 and 16), followed next month by Pesach [April 14 (first seder)–April 22]. First, come in to purchase a batch of satisfyingly noisy groggers. Then, for Pesach, the Gift Shop has an assortment of seder plates
in metals, glass, or ceramics (perfect for a bridal gift); several styles of Hagaddahs; and cloth, ceramic, and Lucite matzah holders. Recently, a sour cream pound cake (America Cooks Kosher, p. 242) was taken to a shiva house. It made a hit, but more importantly, caused a little lift in the spirits as well. For calorie counters, this recipe is forgiving. Substitute buttery spread for the butter and light sour cream for full-fat sour cream for delicious results. The book contains recipes for both basic and exotic fare. There are still a few of these cookbooks available at a sale price in the Gift Shop. Visit the Gift Shop

The Beth Tfiloh Brotherhood is very excited about our upcoming social night at Magooby’s Joke House (9603 Deerco Rd., Timonium, MD 21093) on March 8 featuring comedian Marc Unger. We are gathering at 8:30 pm at Magooby’s for kosher desserts, followed by the show which starts at 9:45 pm. Tickets are only $25 per person and are still available. See the Beth Tfiloh Brotherhood website for more information and how to purchase your tickets. The results are in and the Sisterhood/Brotherhood Bingo night was an overwhelming success. Thank you to both the attendees and the Brotherhood and Sisterhood members who put in so much hard work to put on this great event. Yes! We are planning to have more Bingo nights – “Watch this Space” – for details. Spring brings Oriole’s baseball and that means once again the Brotherhood will have another O’s Big Screen event. If you missed our last one, you won’t want to miss the one. It is almost like being at the game but with a shorter commute and you get home faster! Also the Brotherhood will be teaming up with the Beth Tfiloh Social Action Committee for a spring community service day. Once again, keep looking at either the Brotherhood or Social Action website for details. Both activities will be open to members and non members, as well as their families.

Development News Dr. Sandy & Howard Rosenblatt Endow the Siddur Program Baltimore natives Dr. Sandy and Howard Rosenblatt have been a part of the BT family since the 1940s when they enrolled at Beth Tfiloh Hebrew School. “Howard says we were in classrooms next door to each other,” laughs Sandy. Howard even attended the first Beth Tfiloh Day Camp. The next step of their BT involvement was in the fall of 1967, when Howard, a CPA, helped oversee the administration Beth Tfiloh’s financial activities. Howard eventually became the president of the Congregation, while Sandy, who earned her Ph.D. in School Psychology, administered the admissions testing for the Day School. Their children, Rachel and Sam, attended the Day School from Kindergarten through eighth grade (the High School was just being formed in their high school years). Shares Howard, “There was no question in our minds that they would attend the Day School and the experiences that they had were wonderful.” So wonderful that Sam and wife Michelle’s son, Bennett, is currently a member of BT’s Kindergarten class.
Out of their love for BT and for Jewish education, the Rosenblatts decided to sponsor the siddurim presented each year to the School’s first graders. When the Chazak Campaign was launched, they chose to
“We have always recognized the importance of a Jewish education, especially a Jewish day school education. As such, we are proud to be able to help by underwriting the presentation of the Siddurim.” –Howard Rosenblatt make that generous gift a permanent one. By endowing the annual Siddur Program, they ensured that BT first graders will receive their very own Koren Sacks Siddurim for years to come. At this year’s Siddur Program, Howard, who serves on the Chazak Campaign’s steering committee, expressed that “our families’ long relationship with Beth Tfiloh spans 80 years. We have always recognized the importance
of a Jewish education, especially a Jewish day school education. As such, we are proud to be able to help by underwriting the presentation of the Siddurim.” He continued, “The Jewish people have always emphasized learning and education. The Koren Sacks Siddur is a tutorial which will help your children to become knowledgeable Jews.” Howard also thanked the parents and grandparents who chose to give their children the gift of a Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School education: “Not only is this a wonderful school for the children, but it is also a wonderful opportunity for the parents to learn and grow along side of their children through the many educational programs that are provided for adults during the year.” The Rosenblatts’ generosity is a permanent expression of their gratitude to BT. Says Sandy, “Without question, our involvement with Beth Tfiloh over the years has completely enriched our lives.” To learn how you can make an investment in our Jewish future please contact Mandi Miller at (410) 413-2399 or mmiller@ btfiloh.org. 7
