Shabbat at Beth Tfiloh
eth Tfiloh’s weekly Shabbat line-up provides a choice of services with a number of “user-friendly” enhancements. A full complement of children’s and teen services in addition to babysitting make the Modern Orthodox services especially attractive to families with young children. Our halachically-approved Tzomet sound system, a mechitza, and increased participation by women are innovations which aim to expand the appeal of this unique house of worship. The BT Minyan service on Shabbat morning and Yomim Tovim provides a participatory service in a more intimate setting to enable Beth Tfiloh to serve the broadest cross section of Modern Orthodoxy. Inspiring “talk of the town” sermons by Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg, Rabbi Chai Posner, and the melodic baritone of Hazzan Avi Albrecht, make Beth Tfiloh’s service truly unique on the American Jewish scene. Session 2, 8-9 pm
Choose one exciting elective course: Sex, Religion and Anti-Semitism in the Supreme Court
The Truth Behind the Myth
MRS. BARBARA BLUMBERG

Nine members of the Supreme Court make decisions that have affected millions of Americans for over 240 years. We will take a look at some past decisions that involve sex and religion. From sterilization to prayer in the schools, to the legality of the use of birth control in the privacy of our own home, the Court has weighed in on these issues and many more. Also learn the role that anti-Semitism played historically in the highest court in the land. Mrs. Blumberg taught general studies at Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School for 25 years. She is now an adjunct faculty member at the Community College of Baltimore County, at Osher Life Long Learning Institute at Towson University and at the Renaissance Academy for the Florida Gulf State University.
The Power of the Image–Depicting the Jew in Art from the Ancient World to the Present MRS. ANGELA MUNITZ We will uncover the history behind and the circumstances surrounding the visual metaphors, symbols and clues illustrating the Jew as enigmatic and evil, wise and wicked, neutral or negative and explore the history of the creative visual vocabulary artists have employed to create and communicate an anti-Semitic construct. Mrs. Munitz is a member of Beth Tfiloh, an artist and an art historian.
MRS. CHANA SLAVATICKI
Mrs. Slavaticki teaches Judaic studies at Beth Tfiloh High School and the Mercaz. She lectures across the United States on issues related to Jewish life, finding meaning, and womanhood.

ur tradition teaches that it is customary for us to honor meaningful occasions in our lives, be they joyous or difficult times, by giving tzedakah (charity). Giving tzedakah is a tangible way to show gratitude for the blessings that we all have in our lives. In Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers 3:7) it states, “Rabbi Elazar of Bartosa would say: Give Him what is His, for you, and whatever is yours, are His.” I encourage you to consider honoring your smachot and yahrzeits by making a gift to Beth Tfiloh in one of the following ways. -Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg

CHALLAH-LUYA
“Challah Baking for Rosh Hashanah”
Bring home the apples for your sweet New Year at our apple and fruit/vegetable picking trip with other families and the rabbis at Baugher’s Farm. Enjoy this hands-on opportunity to involve your children in getting ready for Rosh Hashanah in your home.
It has become the widespread custom to bake round and very sweet challot for Rosh Hashanah. The round shape symbolizes the yearly cycle and the “wheel of time.” It also symbolizes perfection and infinity, expressing our hope for a year free of troubles and full of blessing. Children and grandchildren welcome. Special welcome to our 2017 Bat Mitzvah class and their mothers or special friends. Co-sponsored by Mercaz, the BT Parent Association & Sisterhood. 13

SHULEM DEEN
“All Who Go Do Not Return” Shulem Deen is the author of the award-winning memoir, “All Who Go Do Not Return”, an account of growing up in and then leaving the Skverers, one of the most insular Hasidic sects in the U.S. He is a columnist for “The Forward,” and in 2015 was listed in the “Forward 50,” an annual list of American Jews with outsized roles on political and social issues. His articles have appeared in “The New Republic,” “Salon,” “Tablet Magazine,” and elsewhere. He is a board member of Footsteps, an organization that offers assistance and support to those who have left the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community.
