INSUFFICIENT INFRASTRUCTURE

[GENERAL DESCRIPTION] Project from Design Studio Workshop II, Climate Change: improvement and adaptation of waterfronts housing. Contest to improve the current conditions of the inhabitants of Buenaventura, Colombia; who are prone to social problems, deplorable sanitary conditions and possible catastrophic circumstances driven by climate change. The aim is to propose, with preventive vision, solutions to these circumstances. The proposal includes a new environmental ring in order to create a boundary to the informal housing appropriation of the sea, and to protect the island for possible natural disasters. The ring acts as link that creates green public spaces integrating physically and socially the island. At the same time it reactivates the maritime border with different economic activities for the town.

Light openings

[GENERAL DESCRIPTION] Light is what allows us to perceive the world around us, appreciating their textures, shapes, colors, depth, etc. Within the architecture, the treatment of light determines the organization of space, composition and arrangement of the primary elements.

Light will be the computer element of the proposed architectural object, organizing and regulating other subsystems that compose it. Its strategic location in the Monte Catequilla, latitude 0, allows to observe with better accuracy and breadth the importance of the sun. The project draws on the Cayambe volcano and linearity thanks to parallel 0. Also the position and arrangement of different light inputs to the project correspond to the solstice and equinox; as well as the need for ventilation in each place. In the area of interactive center each opening correspond to a phenomenon of light and the interpretation of their properties; as well as the specific qualities found at the equator

Comparison and contrast model

[GENERAL DESCRIPTION] Recompilation of research by design methods focused on understanding shrinking cities and their importance in contemporary architecture. The design studio started with a general understanding of shrinking cities taking into consideration a specific case study based in Sheffield, due to its progressive decline and marginalization: Attercliffe, that allows an understanding of the design site in Italy: Padova Shrinking cities are dense cities that have experienced a great amount of population and buildings loss. Since the infrastructure of such cities was built to support a larger population, its maintenance and development can become a serious concern. As a conclusion from this research, Shrinking cities are considered, not as an issue but as a product of life cycle. However, the actual misreading of shrinking cities has led to social contemporary problems. Therefore, there is the need of adaptable architecture that can survive as an experience, the cycle’s shifting; and a design that can be integrated with nature through this transition process.

[DEDUCTION PROCESS]

Scale analysis Attercliffe and Padova

[MARKET SECTION - 50 YEARS SCENARIO]

The site analysed is in Padova, a big scale hippodrome that has shrinking characteristics that have marginalized the near area. The future scenario of this site requires of a social sustainable society based on self-provision of food and job. Existing infrastructure will be used, as well as new adaptable objects that can be integrated to life cycle. A demolition process will be designed to understand the site process of going back to nature, from big to small scale. If shrinking is a part of life cycle, the solution is not the construction of a giant infrastructure or building, but strategic actions that allow a better use of land and that can make visible the unseen beauty of the site. An architecture that answers to the laws of evolution, being adaptable to change.

[GENERAL DESCRIPTION] The research and design through mapping represents a method for future and on-going problem-finding. Mapping is considered an instrument for recognizing and revealing crucial and hidden information, the one that can produce knowledge, participation, consciousness and action, answering to continuing nowadays’ problems. Therefore, in an increasingly urbanizing world, where cities undergo rapid transformations that led to unplanned strategies; mapping can be used as a tool for recognizing important aspects that should be taken into consideration in any development plan. The present research realizes the benefits, constrains and results of the application of mapping, used as a tool for understanding and revealing the relationships between the infrastructure development and social structures in Cumbaya, a parish located in QuitoEcuador. Cumbaya’s growth is an example of fast development strategies. Nevertheless its unplanned expansion has led to the marginalization of the community and its social interactions.

The research starts with the analysis of different mapping strategies and concepts presented by James Corner, Denis Crosgrove, The Barlett Development Planning Unit, among others. This literature review will guide the methodology applied in the present document, which consists of three important mapping topics: Infrastructure, Image and Social Structure.

[ORGANIZATION CONCEPT] [GENERAL DESCRIPTION] METRORED, an ambulatory healthcare facility needed three floors of administrative offices, taking into consideration the hierarchical structure of their company. The design promotes interaction between the employees. However, it also distinguishes each workstation by the use of diverse heights in each office, promoting an excellent wayfinding method. The use of free plan in the architecture and interior design of the building suggests a direct connection with nature and a detachment to the everydayness of the job. In this way, the design increases the productivity and comfort of the workers. In addition, the design team approached each individual to carefully asses their needs and wishes for creating a better environment that adapts to each personality. The industrial layout used in the design brings a fresh and innovative look to the company, the one that is having a change in methodology promoting more collaborative tasks and goals.

[GENERAL DESCRIPTION] Nowadays, digital representation is a fundamental technique that involves all of the phases of design, for representing an idea or concept and also for exploring and adding new variables that were not taken into consideration years ago. The high quality of the result is an additional value for the different skills that are explored in the firm.
