Healing Elements of the Earth

T

he four elements of western culture are: EARTH, AIR, FIRE, and WATER. Sometimes as humans we often mistake what is freely available to us as not as effective as Western medicine. Let’s start with Earth. Any natural ground cover emits an electron charge that is negative. Negative in this sense is very important. All living things need this to not only survive but thrive. In the sixties rubber soles were created and we lost our connection to the earth. Clint Ober is the innovator behind the Grounding Movement and author of Earthing: The Most Important Health Discovery Ever? In 1995 he developed a working hypothesis: Grounding the human body to the Earth normalizes the functioning of all the body’s systems. The body utilizes the earth’s electrical potential and free electrons to maintain its internal electrical stability, normalizing all its self-healing systems. Now there are over 20 research studies on Grounding. Just think all you must do is walk on the beach or in the woods, or just your backyard (if your grass isn’t treated) and start feeling better. It amazed me that I had an aversion to the grass in the beginning of purposely grounding, luckily now I can lay down without the worry of red ants attacking! I suggest watching the documentary The Earthing Movie on You Tube. Air, hopefully this one doesn’t need a lengthy discussion. I find that respiratory issues such as asthma, allergies, COPD, Bronchitis, Emphysema, and Pneumonia are much more commonplace. A simple search shows you that more than one billion people suffer from either acute or chronic respiratory conditions. Each year four million people die prematurely from chronic respiratory disease. Lung cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States. Breathwork is beneficial and honestly life changing. Meditation which has been recognized around the world for its healing abilities uses breathing as its foundation. Wim Hof, also known as “The Superhuman” made breath work cool even for the younger generations. He has shown millions of people that doing his breathing exercise can make significant changes in your health, and once again at no cost! He has free videos on You Tube, my favorite one is found on my website http://Joannesnutritionworld.com.

H

ere in Florida, there is no shortage of the Fire Element. Fire is considered to be both hot and dry. The Sun definitely has healing abilities starting with your eyes that need light to help set your body’s internal clock. Sunlight helps boost a chemical in your brain called serotonin, and that can give you more energy and help keep you calm, positive and focused. Water, the most coveted element on earth, needs to be appreciated and respected. Our earth as well as the human body is 72% water. I always suggest eating lots of veggies especially cucumbers, celery and bok choy to hydrate without the feeling of needing to rush to the restroom. The kidneys, bladder, and urinary system depend on our dietary choices as well as the abstinence from pain relievers which hurt the kidneys.

fternoon showers, calm seas, beautiful weather, it’s summertime here on the Treasure Coast and it is your time to get out on the water and make some memories. Hope is finally starting to peer over the horizon after a long, windy, and rough winter and spring. Summer brings along with it some of the best fishing there is, and we are going to dive right into what you should be targeting summer 2021 on the beautiful Treasure Coast of Florida. May means grouper season! May first is a local holiday here on the Treasure Coast. Anglers get out on opening day to test their muscles battling the mean muggin’ groupers of the deep. Mostly, here we are targeting the Gag Grouper (Mycteroperca microlepis), Red Grouper (Epinephelus morio), and the Scamp Grouper (Mycteroperca phenax). Typically, we can find these groupers this time of year in deep water between 140’ and 240’ of water where the scamp can even be found as deep as 400’ of water. Watch our NEW show, Anglin’ Insider, with myself, Captain Jack Medla! It will be your inside report on the Treasure Coast fishing and boating industry. We will dive into the hottest bites, deals, products, and businesses that will get your game to the next level. Working directly with the local guides and companies that showcase our region so well. Watch it live on most social streaming platforms Thursday Nights at 7 PM or on the Treasure Coast TV channel. inish Reading the Entire Scoop on This & So Much More! Ask the Doctor BY DR. HADI SHALHOUB, D.O., FACOS

I

f you’ve ever experienced restless, painful, or itchy legs, you might have varicose veins. This condition is very common. Did you know more than 30 million Americans have varicose veins? Unfortunately, however, less than 10% of people seek treatment. I would like to provide some education on the condition to you. Varicose veins happen when the valves in leg veins no longer function, resulting in pooling blood in the legs. People often assume these blue, red, or flesh-colored veins are just a cosmetic nuisance or confuse them with spider veins. Some people also write them off as just a sign of getting older. The truth is that varicose veins may be related to a more serious medical condition called chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). Allowing CVI to continue to get worse can have some serious implications. In addition to causing leg pain and swelling, CVI can result in leg restlessness, skin damage, and even ulcers and open wounds in the leg. The longer the condition the develops, the more likely it is for these symptoms to occur. Therefore it is better to treat varicose veins as soon as possible.

Workers’ Comp Settlements

Law Office of

Olivia Devonmille, P.A.

BY OLIVIA DEVONMILLE, ESQUIRE

I

f you have been following my recent columns in this magazine, you have some basic knowledge about lost wage and medical benefits when you are hurt at work. Florida’s Workers’ Compensation law also allows settlement of claims for a lump sum of money. This is referred to in the system as a “washout” of your claim. Some basic rules apply to Workers’ Compensation settlements. The injured worker can never be forced by the insurance company or the Workers’ Compensation Judge to accept a lump sum settlement of their claim. The flip side of this is that no one, including the judge, can force your employer and their insurance company to pay a lump sum settlement. How much is paid for a settlement is negotiated by the parties, but never decided by the judge. Most claims end in settlement. Settlement gives the injured worker the freedom to choose his or her own doctors. If you stay in the Workers’ Compensation system, the insurance company will always control your medical care, including selecting your doctors and only authorizing medical care prescribed by their doctor. Settlement takes away the uncertainty of when or if your next lost wage check is mailed. Settlement allows the injured worker to take back control. The most frequently asked question regarding settlement is “How much is my case worth?” This is a question that should only be answered after a thorough review of your file, including your medical records. You should know if your treating doctor is recommending future medical treatment, and how much that treatment will cost if you pay for the treatment after you settle. Many other factors can play a role, including your age, the amount of your wages before you were hurt, and the nature of your injury. If you have been injured at work and would like a free consultation to discuss settlement or any other aspect of your Workers’ Compensation claim, please call my office to schedule an appointment.

Olivia represents workers who are injured on the job. She brings her unique

perspective and experience

as a former Workers’ Compensation Judge in Fort Pierce.

Hibiscus Children’s Center Provides Trauma-Informed Care to Children “All children should grow up in a safe and loving home, free from abuse and neglect.”

LaVaughn Tilton, Hibiscus Founder (1925-2021)

ver 35 years ago, the founder of Hibiscus Children’s Center had an extraordinary vision that all children should grow up in a safe and loving home, free from abuse and neglect. LaVaughn Tilton had a passion and determination for a safer and kinder tomorrow for children and created the blueprint for Hibiscus to care for traumatized children. The mission of Hibiscus has never wavered in over three decades, to maintain a safe shelter for children who are abused, abandoned and neglected by providing prevention, early intervention, and advocacy in quality residential, assessment and recovery programs. Since opening our doors in 1985, Hibiscus has been a safe haven for more than 3,000 children. Today, close to 200 children are provided lifechanging services annually at the Tilton Family Children’s Shelter and Hibiscus Village. Additionally, over 1,600 community children and families receive prevention and intervention services across the Treasure Coast.

(L) Kristi Huddleston, Harmony Hope Stables and Caroline Vinyard, Hibiscus COO, with Harmony and Melody! Hibiscus has partnered with Harmony Hope Stables to provide Equine & Music Therapy, an innovative therapeutic approach that is an expansion of current mental health services and helps build self-esteem and life skills in children.

Child abuse comes in many forms, including physical, mental, emotional, sexual, neglect and/or abandonment. Hibiscus offers specialized therapy to treat victims of sexual abuse or youth that have been identified as targets of human trafficking. Clinicians who are certified in the Sexual Abuse Treatment Program receive specialized annual training and are certified through the Florida Department of Health. Statistics show that sadly, about one in 10 children will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday. One of the key elements to address the trauma experienced by abuse victims is through trauma-informed care. Hibiscus is certified and utilizes the Sanctuary Model, an innovative, evidence-based model that addresses the health and well-being of abused children and their caregivers, including staff and volunteers. will likely live in more than four homes during the first year of care and it’s common for children who grow up in foster care to move more than 15 times. Each move can mean falling further behind in school and having to make new friends. This is in addition to the trauma they have already experienced at the hands of their parents/ caregivers and is one of the many reasons a traumainformed culture is so vital to our children’s well-being. Additionally, mental health counselors work closely with our children to help them heal, grow and thrive. hloe Henry, a former youth who lived at the Shelter many years ago, shared this: “When I was first removed, I did not want to be at the Shelter. I just chose to see the bad in everything. I was angry, scared and overwhelmed and made bad choices. I didn’t trust anyone. But, after a little while, it started sinking in that the staff and volunteers were good and cared about me. I knew this was a safe place and that they loved me, they never gave up on me no matter what I did or said to them”. Hibiscus has served thousands of children like Chloe who were traumatized but found safe haven. Today, Hibiscus continues to promote growth, foster learning, create a sanctuary culture, and provide the resources and skills for a successful transition into adulthood.

Termite Season is Here!

T

he hot summer weather and termite mating season is here. The winged termites now take flight. Warm temperatures and heavy rain triggers termite swarming behavior, infestations and new nests. New nests mean more termites and more destruction to any wood they may find including doors, baseboards, wood studs in the walls, fascia and soffit wood, and most importantly the wood rafters and beams supporting your roof. Are you safe? If you are a Florida homeowner and are living in a new home, don’t make the mistake of thinking your home is safe from subterranean termites. Likewise, if you live in a CBS block home, you should be equally concerned as those who live in a wood framed home. It’s a common myth that, just because many of the homes in your area are built out of concrete they don’t need to worry about termites. That is a false sense of security. Termites can enter through any sort of opening including through a settlement

crack, loose mortar joint, small spaces around a drainpipe, or a simple crack in the foundation. And what are the walls and rafters of most homes made of? WOOD! Termites cause $5 billion a year in damage to structures across America, so it’s important to be aware of them and know how to find and fight them. Prevention is key: Some people think that if they cross their fingers and hope termites don’t invade their home, they’ll be able to avoid costly termite damage repairs. Don’t be that person, that is wishful thinking. Instead guard your investment from subterranean termites with the bug guys. Not only will a preventative treatment increase your home value, but it will also deliver peace of mind, knowing your family’s home is safe. Call the bug guys today to schedule your free termite prevention inspection.

column Pastor Mike’s Corner

Overcoming Our Sins W an article. I hope I haven’t scared you

e’re all sinners!! What a way to start out

away with my first sentence. “We all have fallen short of the Glory of God” (Rom. 3:23) We all sin – you, me and every other human being on the face of the earth. But we are freed by God’s GRACE. God’s gift of unmerited favor. So, what is the answer to overcoming our sin. There are many ways, but I want to share one way that I have found successful in my life and many others as well. When I was in high school I was on the track team, I ran “Cross Country” I was a long-distance runner, not fast, more like the turtle then the rabbit. I enjoyed running but soon after High school I joined the Navy and learned how to drink. I was good at it. I could never imagine not ever drinking. I had fallen in love with my addiction to alcohol and drugs. Finally, after getting clean and sober I refocused my attention to the game of golf. Eventually I refocused my attention to Jesus. Don’t get me wrong I still play golf but my main attention is on Jesus. But there was a time all I thought about was Golf.

Victory over sin won’t come through discipline.

H I won’t____”? You fill in the blanks. If that’s what you’re

thinking about, that’s what’s got your attention, guess what you're setting yourself up to do: Whatever you’re not wanting to do!! There is a saying in recovery we use every day. “If nothing changes, nothing changes. “We don’t experience victory by struggling against sin, but by setting our minds on Jesus” (Steve McVey, “Grace Rules” pg.102) When a person finds himself entangled with a sin, it’s often difficult to imagine a time when he won’t be connected to that sin. How does a person find freedom over habitual sins in his life? Certainly, it won’t happen by applying religious rules in his life? The idea that a Christian should protect himself from sin by a strict adherence to rules is sin’s secret weapon against the believer. Laws always stimulate sin. The apostle Paul described his own encounter with sin, by saying: “Why do I do the things I don’t want to do, and the things I should do I don’t…. For the good I wish, I do not do but I practice the very evil that I do not wish.” (paraphrased, Romans 7:15,19) I could talk on this subject for hours however my space is limited. I’ll close with this. I needed to step out of denial and into God’s GRACE. To change a thought, I need to move a muscle, remember “Nothing changes if nothing changes,” and change comes through surrendering to Jesus.

God Bless, Pastor Mike
