information center devín studio 2010 faculty of architecture, sTU supervisor: Ing.arch. Eva Oravcová, PhD.
Devin is one of the most visited places in surroundings of Bratislava. It is unique for various reasons. The historical landmark is a castle on the hill with great importance in Slovak history. It looks above the confluence of two rivers, Danube and Morava and provides amazing view of Austrian fields and surrounding hills. The surrounding nature has wetland character and is part of protected reservation. The place is also one favourite stop on international bike route. The basic idea of information centre was to keep it simple, without contrast to surrounding nature and historical landmarks. For this reason its only one floor high, opened plan structure with the only accent, plexi glass ribbons covering it, hiding it to the nature and from the sun. BIKE ROUTE

meditation house studio 2011 faculty of architecture, sTU supervisor: Ing. arch. Mรกria Holฤ ekovรก, PhD.
Every day our minds are full of thoughts, ideas, future plans or memories. It is very easy to get lost in this labyrinth. I wanted to create a meditation space where the thoughts could be put in order. Where you could organise the essential thoughts and get rid of the ones that could your mind. I created a labyrinth of thoughts represented as texts flying all around. The letters without meaning printed on glass panels creating a maze where you can get in touch with the thoughts, hide and meditate. The meditation house has two parts, one on the ground and one underground, mysterious inside space, a temple of discovery. It is also a labyrinth of panels. On the other side of the gap between old buildings where the meditation house is located, is a garden, place of organised thoughts.

faculty of architecture, sTU supervisor: doc. Ing. arch. MĂĄrius Ĺ˝itĹˆanskĂ˝, PhD.
The number of inhabitants in Petrzalka (residential part of Bratislava) will grow to the year 2030 thanks to new construction and development plans. This will increase the demand after free time activities and services. Currently there is one free time center for the whole area, which in the future will be able to only hold up the capacity of nothern part of Petrzalka. The southern part thou offers great options for the new free time center, that can be connected with the surrounding nature. My design is based on current interest of inhabitants and the use of environment to create new activities. The architecture is base on my previous urban work resulting into smaller masses oriented on view and connection axes creating outside spaces for various smaller functions and activities. info: http://www.cvcgessayova.eu/ http://www.petrzalka.sk/oblasti/

...where am I ?
pre-master thesis work 2013 faculty of architecture, sTU supervisor: doc. Ing. arch. Márius Žitňanský, PhD. collaboration: Lýdia Medvecká, Alica Uhríková
1. phase
Chorvátske rameno is a man-made canal axis of the residential part of Bratislava - Petržalka. Petržalka has been suffering from many urban problems, as a result of unfinished planning, postponing and cancelling the metro construction or lack of amenities and gathering spaces. This process resulted into making Petržalka a place that most people are afraid of, the rumours about high crime rate and many other urban myths are lately not even true, but the bad reputation stays. Our goal was to make Petržalka into attractive place, where not only current residents love to live but it also attracts people ...where am I ? are big development from the other parts of the city. There plans for the area already in progress, and our idea was to prepare people and the place for this change with smaller interventions. We analyses what makes scary places so scary and how to change that. The steps were to make the places eligible, easy to define then give them a purpose, a specific attraction to bring people into the area and the last step is the already planned construction around the new tram rail along this axis. chorvátske rameno_south pre-master thesis work 2013 faculty of architecture, sTU supervisor: doc. Ing. arch. Márius Žitňanský, PhD.
The project is part of previously mentioned pre-diploma work. The concept of places of fear and safety is taken from research that showed one of least scary places is part of old Petržalka. Petržalka was originally a village with only single family houses and gardens. I wanted to bring this attribute back and put it to contrast with the current state of Petržalka, monotonous, huge apartment blocks that do not define the place and make it easy to get lost in. Another aspect I wanted to use was the presence of the water canal and lake, creating cultural and leisure parts with connection to existing structure.

“Sponges are multicellular organisms which have bodies full of pores and channels allowing water to circulate through them.” Our design is like a sponge. It is an organizing structure for future development. Holding and absorbing not only water but also people and program through a variety of channels, fast and slow.

leaf butterfly forrest art and architecture course 2012 faculty of architecture, sTU supervisor: doc. akad. soch. Gabriela Gáspárová-Illéšová
As the idea for this project I used an old fantasy I had as a kid. I used to live in the historical centre close to Hlboka Street. The street is a forest-formed alley among old town villas. In my world this place had certain magic and mystery behind it. It is quite dark place with many mysterious forgotten stairs leading nowhere surrounded by rocks. One of its mythical creatures was king Leaf Butterfly. A butterfly with its wings made of leaves. I gave the whole forest the name “Leaf Butterfly” thinking it was full of these butterflies only hidden from human eyes. They could only be seen when the forest is empty in the evening or night. Although I never talked my mom into taking me to the forest at night, I recreated this fantasy myself again.

living neighbourhood! Houses for Change, international competition 2013 collaboration: Andrej Malík, Lukáš Radošovský
Population growth and lack of affordable housing is current problem also in the capital of Ethiopia Addis Ababa. The new initiatives to build modern mass housing structures did not prove appropriate for the culture and life style of the inhabitants and these new blocks get illegally remodelled or further rented and the inhabitants keep living in the slums that do not provide suitable conditions. We tried to understand the habits and traditions in the Ethiopian culture where the community in an enclosed neighbourhood has big value and they tend to protect their privacy in these formed yards. The streets are used only as retail and communication space. The option to create and form your own home and interior walls gives the inhabitants enough freedom they need but the given structures also limit unwanted extensions to the structure. The lifestyle of people is not changed only improved and the uniting system allows the urban structure to spread, keeping the existing infrastructure without resulting into an unorganized slum. choice of enlarging the unit for family growth or even renting
upper floors also have outdoor space per unit
outdoor kitchen for open fire and temporary shelter for smaller animals (goats) in festive periods
existing neighbourhoods in addis ababa slum
shared hygiene units with acces to drinking water
variability of unit size and open inside space for adjusting to special needs
exterior panels made of straw, clay, bricks... available, affordable materials
the prepared structure allows only certain level of extension
microeconomic business area facing the street. Stands made of wood, bricks and corrugated iron.
courtyard for the community, safe place for kids to play and small gardens, not big enough to create new dwellings
streets are left for traffic, markets, workshops, stands...
extension of the roof provides shade on the street and market area
roof as a place for drying vegetables and good in the sun.

xella sm(art)house performance center competition 2014 collaboration:
Eva Andrášová, Michala Lietavová
The main task of this competition was to design a sm(art) house in the vacant lot of the historical city center of Bratislava and to create new urban proposal for “Michalská (Vodná) priekopa”. Michalská priekopa is nowadays partially closed. To give this place one character we decided to implement modular unit, that can be transformed according to current requirements. This normally closed wooden box offers opportunity to be opened in different ways to privide various functions. Its program can be adjusted according to seasons as Christmas market, summer performances, public reading, musical concerts and many others.
38
39
According to the locality of the site, the main goal of our proposal was to reflect the structure and hierarchy of historical city centres. The concept of defending walls and inner and outer city is transformed into the interior of the sm(art) house. The main performing space is divided into two different spaces - closed and open space. Both performing spaces are linked by a staircase gallery. The ground floor and underground floor accomodate an entrance, shop, cafe with with direct connection to the courtyard. concept

hovník! sit down! workshop 2012 faculty of architecture, sTU supervisor: Ing. arch. Jozef Bátor collaboration: Eva Andrášová, Pavol Dobšinský, Jana Drábová, Martin Hložka, Andrea Leitmannová, Oliver Leško, Michala Lietavová, Martin Machala, Jana Matlovičová, Daniel Mudrák
Hovnik (Slovak not so common word for sofa) was organised as a two day workshop where our team designed and then built piece of furniture for the faculty. The task was to work with no budget only with old cardboard boxes from local stores. We worked with various qualities of the cardboard as thickness, colour… This was we used different boxes as bearing structure, other as sitting surface or decorative elements. One aspect of the sofa was is interactivity with visitors. The cardboard cylinders on the top can be adjusted by attached strings to different heights and flattened when you sit on them. This was you can form cardboard landscapes around you while you wait for your next class.
