/initial ideas & development For my branding identity I wanted to include the element of self portrait as I believe it to be the most effective way to make it personal and true to myself. I also wanted to use one or two pop key colours to make it stand out more.

brief develop a body of self-promotional work by thinking of yourself as a fashion communicator and promoter within the broader fashion landscape.

The initial design featured a black and white portrait inspired by artist Henn Kim. However, I struggled to find a way to relate the illustration to the design on the back of the card. I also didn’t think it fit well enough within the frame and appeared too much like a “floating head”, a random design element: therefore I wanted to create some kind of relationship to the border.

PICASSO

MATISSE

The main inspiration behind my final design came from the work of graphic designer Saul Bass, especially focusing on his motion-picture title sequences, film posters and logos. Another inspiration was Henri Matisse’s cut-outs canvases and Picasso’s brightly-coloured, geometric and abstract portraits.

January 6, 2017 Beyond Retro Offices 110-112 Cheshire St London, E2 6EJ 020 7613 3636

Dear Ashley Emerson, My name is Benedetta Barucco, and I am writing you in regards to the position as Creative Content & Visuals Coordinator advertised on the website FashionWorkie. As a Fashion Communication and Promotion student, one of our main focuses is to learn how to capture the essence of a brand and its consumer base in order to produce visual promotional content that is effective, on point, and commercially viable. Through a variety of projects, I have become experienced in planning and delivering branded content both digitally, on print and as set design, and acquired knowledge and understanding of brands and events from concept to launch. I believe my experience, combined with my will to learn and ability to adapt, make me a suitable candidate to help Beyond Retro create and maintain a strong brand visual identity throughout all customer touchpoints. My internship in the Research & Development team at A.M.F., a high-profile fashion company in Italy, has given me the chance to develop skills in managing, processing and researching within a professional environment. I have worked closely alongside different teams to create display panels for upcoming trade fairs, as well as personally designing brochures and other branded content to present products to our clients. Attention to detail was one of the main requirements at this company, as they offer high-quality hardware and accessories to brands such as Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga and Burberry, among others. Even though I was an intern, my layouts and designs were often picked as the best and I was soon assigned to more hands-on tasks as well. In terms of in-store visual merchandising, my experience as a Student Ambassador at the Nottingham Playhouse has taught me how to develop and execute the set-up of a space on a low budget and tight schedule. Within a team of four, I was responsible to devise a concept to decorate our VIP room with props and catering which would fit the theme or mood of the play, as well as to create and distribute promotional material. During my time interning at A.M.F. I have helped designing and sourcing material to be taken to Paris and Berlin trade fairs, where an understanding of brand identity and awareness of VM trends were essential. I was head of the exhibition committee in my second year of university where I demonstrated high-standard communication skills by coordinating a large amount of people, setting clear deadlines and being a team player. I am particularly keen in working with you because of your brand ethos and philosophy. Being a fashion student, it is key to be conscious of the environmental and social impact this industry has on the world around us. Sustainable fashion is a topic I have felt close to ever since I decided to step into this world, especially due to my personal experiences living and working abroad which have given me a distinctly international and culturally-inclusive sensitivity. I would therefore be thrilled to be working alongside one of the most recognised vintage clothing store in the UK. Thank you for taking the time to consider my application, I look forward to hearing from you. Please find attached a copy of my CV.

Yours sincerely, Benedetta Barucco Creative Communication & Art Direction Nottingham Trent University +44 1234 567890

Even though at first I thought I would go for a very simple and minimalist layout, I have found myself being drawn by a lot of these kind of designs which feature the portfolio’s work in large blocks on the homepage, usually filling the browser window to the edges. I find they have a very impactful effect and they bring the focus entirely on the artwork.

I like to keep the menu on the top right and easy to select, with my title / logo on the left hand corner – that keeps the top clean and simple while the rest of the homepage can be busier with the images.

This is a cute and easy way to personalise the menu bar to make it stand out a little, by using the site’s colour palette. I also like the look of the square images, kind of like an Instagram feed. I think I would prefer the titles to appear as you hover over the picture, though, rather than underneath like here.

I like the way he layed out the description of the photographs at the top of the page.

07

This About page features a section in which he clearly states and lists what he is currently looking for in terms of employment. I like how he also included more personal things such as living abroad, which gives a more complete look at his personality and aspirations.

Here I like the simple logo on the top left corner and the consistent colour palette.

This girl split her work into sections by the type of role she had – editorial, photography, typography, etc. I think it would be a good way for potential employers to find exactly the skills they are looking for within my body of work. benedetta barucco

I have gotten the chance to try out things and develop skills both digitally and hands-on, which I was very grateful for as it made the days feel always different and exciting. Among others, I became more confident with Adobe Illustrator, on which I would create mock-ups for clients and layouts, and I learned how to use a sewing machine.

Over the summer months back in Italy I did an internship with A.M.F. Snaps, a company based in Bassano del Grappa which specialises in producing highquality metal and non-metal accessories for garment, shoes and leather goods whose clients are some of the most famous international brands. I was part of their Research & Development team for 5 weeks.

Another task I was often assigned was trend research. This included specific brand and catwalk research to create moodboards to send to our clients to help them decide what style to go for; and general trend forecasting which covered colour, shapes and materials to inspire our next collection. Having had experience at FCP I was pretty confident in what I was doing, but it was good to be handling similar tasks in a real professional environment.

14

I was also really happy to be trusted with the task of planning and mounting the panel boards which were going to be taken to the September trade fairs in Paris and Munich. Again, the combination of software to create the backdrops, styling experience while choosing the products to be displayed and how to display them, and the practical skills in actually applying the accessories on the board meant that it was a task that challenged me and made me grow on several different levels.
