LETTER FROM THE EDITORIN-CHIEF
S
pring has finally sprung and, as you’ll see, we have embraced it with wild abandon. This has been a very uplifting issue for us to put together – a breathtaking getaway from the realities and burdens of the world. My heart goes out to our neighbors up the Californian coast, especially Montecito, with the natural disasters that have per vaded the last year. It’s in times like this that we often need a visual or literary escape, to appreciate the beautiful and magnificent things we have around us. Our Spring issue has embraced that philosophy – it is very much a celebration of life and the bounties that Spring brings. We’ve highlighted events and people that mean a lot to us - I am thrilled to recap our second annual Vanderpump Dog Foundation Gala, which has been such a huge part of my family’s life. Philanthropy is an extremely important element of Beverly Hills Lifestyle and we love being able to shine a light on quite a few in this issue. I am so happy to be highlighting an array of incredible people, the first and foremost being the charming and charitable Matt Bomer, whom we are honored to have on our cover. In an ever-changing world, with a tumultuous political climate and increasingly marginalized sectors, I am always excited to feature people who use their platform to create change and champion the causes they believe in. Matt Bomer is a striking example of someone who uses both his personal transparency and professional choices to make a difference, and I think you’ll be as enamored with him as I am. This issue is a dramatic departure from normal and average. Let us take you on a stunningly visual journey through the wonderinfused eyes of our Fashion Director, with a couture reverie set against the striking backdrop of a Malibu animal sanctuary. Revel in the visuals of Stanley the giraffe and elegant haute couture. From there, we whisk you away to exquisitely aesthetic locales – through ancient French chapels reconstructed brick by brick in San Diego’s most luxurious spa, to Florence’s art-inspired hotels, to the azure beaches of Mayakoba. From extravagant travel, to lavish yachts and homes, this issue has allowed us to cherry pick the best of the best and spread it out before you, enticing you to dream and rejoice in luxury. So, make yourself a frothy pink Blood Orange Bellini (p. 136), and enjoy the increasingly warm weather as you flip our luxurious pages, allowing us to take you on a journey through all that Spring has to offer. Love always,

GOLD MEETS GOLDEN THE EVENT WITH THE MIDAS TOUCH by Charley Cullen Walters
F
ollowing last month’s cover story featuring Nicole Kidman, Beverly Hills Lifestyle was thrilled to score an exclusive inside look at one of Golden Globes Weekend’s hottest events. Celebrating the intersection of Hollywood & Sport, the 5th Annual "Gold Meets Golden” event was again hosted by Kidman and attended by several top Globe nominees (many of whom won the next day!) including Jessica Chastain, Hugh Jackman, Allison Janney, Ricky Martin, Nick Jonas, Chrissy Metz, Matt Bomer, James Franco, Gillian Anderson and Evan Peters. ˘ The celebrities welcomed athletes, Olympians and Paralympians Nadia Comaneci, Bart Conner, Billie Jean King, Greg Louganis, Nastia Liukin, Laurie Hernandez, Alex Morgan, Amy Purdy, Summer Sanders, Carmelita Jeter, Ed Moses, Tatyana McFadden, Danell Leyva, John Orozco and more for a special celebration on Saturday, January 6. Hugh Jackman gave a heartwarming speech about empowering women in Hollywood & Sport (the theme of this year’s event), and introduced a chilling performance by Globe winner Keala Settle, singing “This is Me” from The Greatest Showman.
The food and drink for the event continued the gold theme, with delectables and specialty cocktails by Celebrity Chef Cat Cora, a strong female in her own industry. Coca-Cola showcased a museum of Olympic memorabilia including torches that were a hit with the celebrities, celebrating their 90th anniversary supporting the Olympics. A styling lounge was provided by TwentyFourSeven Cosmetics and SkinLabUSA, and the DrinkBev wine brand ran a clever social media campaign called #WomanUp, which trended throughout the party. A popular coffee station was provided by Bulletproof Coffee, who provides a healthy alternative to the morning beverage by mixing a form of organic butter in with their warm and cold brew creations. Oculus and DiscoveryVR provided a 360 Virtual Reality Experience for attendees, which allowed celebrities to experience what it was like to be an Olympian, and vice versa. The gift bags for the event were some of the best from the Globes weekend featuring Coca-Cola Limited Edition PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Coasters, TwentyFourSeven Anti-Aging #one Face Serum and #mask Face Mask, DrinkBev cooler and California Rosé can, Bulletproof Coffee Gift set with Cold Brew, Octane Oil and Collagen Protein, a limited edition pair of Snapchat Snap Spectacles, and our own Beverly Hills Lifestyle Magazine with Nicole Kidman on the cover. RYAN GORDY 2017 WELLNESS CELEBRATION HONORING RYAN GORDY by Mark Kurian
O
n Saturday, October 28th, 2017, the Ryan Gordy Foundation held their inaugural Wellness Celebration event in Bel-Air, California. A private affair for family, friends, celebrities and tastemakers, the evening was an extremely intimate and extraordinary night to honor the late Ryan Gordy. Celebrating the way Ryan lived his life, the evening offered attendees an insider’s look at the best practices in holistic wellness and healing, honoring key members of the holistic community and sharing the ways in which they love their lives. Life has a way of reminding us of what is most important and showing us the strength we have as human beings. When faced with those moments, we have the opportunity to celebrate life, even in the hardest of times. At Beverly Hills Lifestyle, we always have room to highlight those special moments, and the people who remind us of the importance of values, love, and a life well lived. After the tragic death of Ryan Gordy, his family knew that they needed to honor and continue his legacy, as well as his love for life. They needed to share his story and they did it in a powerful and poignant way. The inaugural Wellness Celebration was a night where gratitude was not in shortage. A night where people came together to rejoice in the love of life. Every detail, from beginning to end, had purpose and meaning, to make the evening feel special and unique. Upon arrival, cars from BMW Beverly Hills welcomed you into a stunning private home that had been beautifully decorated and adorned for the occasion; after which each guest found themselves enjoying a meaningful evening, including performances by Stevie Wonder. Every moment of the Wellness Celebration paid homage to and celebrated the life of Ryan Gordy. The messages from those closest to him, including an eloquent and impactful address by his mother, Anita Thompson, alongside a video, highlighted and cherished this very special man. We at Beverly Hills Lifestyle were grateful and humbled to share in this evening; a perfect example of honoring a man’s legacy and moving forward with his message.

ANNUAL VANDERPUMP DOG FOUNDATION F UNDRAISING GALA Photography - Faye Sadou | McCall & Nikki Ryan Photography
O
n November 9th, 2017, our Editor-in-Chief Lisa Vanderpump and her husband Ken Todd, alongside our Executive Editor Pandora Vanderpump Sabo, Dr. John Sessa and the rest of The Vanderpump Dog Foundation team, hosted their second annual Gala, presented by Zappos for Good, at the Taglyan Cultural Complex in Los Angeles. Beverly Hills Lifestyle was thrilled to attend and support their mission. The fabulous evening helped raise awareness about The Vanderpump Dog Foundation’s efforts to end the dog meat trade, draw attention to their current and future campaigns within the US and raise money to continue the 501(c)(3) Foundation’s work. The Gala was a complete success – hundreds of people gathered together to celebrate dogs, and help improve the lives of abused and mistreated dogs both domestically and internationally. The Gala’s red carpet kicked off at 6pm, with a beautiful candlelit cocktail hour and a silent auction. Celebrities and attendees bid on a variety of donated luxury items ranging from hotel stays to dog beds and luxury beauty packages. At 7:30pm the doors opened to a stunning ballroom complete with pink roses and candelabras (décor by Kevin Lee Productions) for a dinner that included music, dancing, celebrity performances, celebrity speakers and an incredible Live Auction of one-of-a-kind experiences.

EVENTS
Mario Lopez, the event’s host for the second year in a row, began the evening and continued to host throughout the night. The Vanderpump Dog Foundation’s founder, Lisa Vanderpump, made a heart-wrenching and moving speech, while recapping the successes of the Foundation, including medical missions to Yulin, China, and Haiti, as well as sharing some of the incredible success stories of the hundreds of dogs adopted out since the Vanderpump Dog Rescue Center opened on West 3rd Street in Los Angeles in March of 2017. The Vanderpump Dog Foundation honored former corporal Megan Leavy, presenting her with their 2017 “Dog Hero” Award for her service to both her country and the canine community. The Foundation also awarded Honey, a survivor of the Yulin Dog Meat Festival this year, as their “2017 Dog of the Year”. Honey was rescued from the Yulin Dog Meat Festival, and brought back to the Vanderpump Dog Rescue Center by the Executive Director of the Foundation, Dr. John Sessa, and has since been adopted by a loving, caring family. Celebrity performances were peppered throughout this gorgeous event, with performances by Billy Gilman (The Voice), singer and actor Cheyenne Jackson (American Horror Story), and an incredible dinner performance by the band Shirley House. The night ended with a spectacular dance performance from Dancing with the Stars’ Julz Tocker and partner Rachel White, followed by a night of guests dancing, with stars Lance Bass, Michael Turchin, Lisa Vanderpump and Ken Todd leading the way. Many of Lisa’s close friends showed up to support the cause, including a wonderful amount of celebrities who helped raise awareness on the red carpet and through social media.

THE LUXURY OF ADVENTURE by Ryan Young Photography - Derek and Drew Riker Styling: Neil Cohen
I
write to you while on a journey heading deep into the base of Cooper Canyon, 20,000 square miles of jagged cliffs and gorges slicing through the remote Mexican landscape. Currently going on a restless two-hour-night’s sleep, I’m sandwiched between two other ultra-runners in a van filled with twelve. After 14 hours of driving, my tired body aches from doing nothing but bracing for the next topes on this half-paved gravel road. To most, I am nowhere near luxury, but we’d probably agree, it’s an adventure! It’s moments like these that sum up my life. The moments that embody my quest from what I call 'the luxury of adventure'. I’ve long believed adventure is anything that takes us out of our comfort zone, jolts our routine, our system and leaves us with new insight and fresh perspectives, if not a renewed sense of purpose. But what if we’ve grown accustomed to adventure? What if putting ourselves into these situations is what we’ve come to expect? What if adventure becomes our comfort? A state of great comfort and extravagant living, by definition, is luxury.
37
A FASHION
I’ll take it one step further and suggest living a life of meaningful luxury is finding the positive in the world around us, no matter the time or location. Sure, a summer holiday aboard a boat in the Mediterranean is the obvious; but what if a quiet night at home under a blanket, candle lit and fireplace cracking, offered the same reward? What if savoring a cactus carnitas gordita, cooked atop a steel barrel turned working fire and stove, while standing in the rain, satisfied my soul just as much as it satisfied my hunger? Sometimes they’re unexpected moments we didn’t know we needed but, more often than not, the luxury of adventure are the moments we allow ourselves all we need for our personal wellness. It’s what we chose for work, how we workout, the friends we surround ourselves with, where and how we travel, what we wear; in essence, it’s the adventure of how we choose to deliberately create our lives. It’s living solidly, confidently, as an individual; boldly making choices to further and nurture our unique wellness. In the luxury of adventure, we stand tall in who we are as individuals, understanding we are unique beings capable of whatever our imaginations draw. We humbly celebrate ourselves each as a complete person while we’re able to drop into a new group, participate in foreign rituals, contemplate ideas different from our own.

Belonging so
fully to yourself that you’re willing to stand alone is a wilderness - an untamed, unpredictable place of solitude and searching. It is a place as dangerous as it is breathtaking, a place as sought after as it is feared...it turns out to be the place of true belonging, and it's the bravest and most sacred place you will ever stand.”
We step into situations open, willing and confident in our ability to change our thoughts, beliefs and actions. We are aware that everyone’s sense of wellness is as tailored to one’s being as a tortoise’s shell and, like that shell, it’s constantly evolving. Storyteller, researcher and author Brené Brown sums up the luxury of adventure paradox well. In Braving the Wilderness she writes, “Belonging so fully to yourself that you’re willing to stand alone is a wilderness - an untamed, unpredictable place of solitude and searching. It is a place as dangerous as it is breathtaking, a place as sought after as it is feared...it turns out to be the place of true belonging, and it’s the bravest and most sacred place you will ever stand.” It is, perhaps, in my case, physical adventures that ask greatly of my body, mind and soul, during which I am the most comfortable, the most at ease in the present moment, living my most extravagantly. Yet I’m fully connected to the world around me. The luxury of adventure asks us to go deep internally, to be vulnerable, explore what it is that best expresses who we are. It means embracing the extremes then determining what works best for us. An afternoon crying out unrealized frustrations in a sweat lodge induced by a shaman. A four-handed massage with scents of eucalyptus. A homemade meal of lentil and potato soup, jamón steak with fried beans and savory guacamole. It means attempting to run as a local in huaraches, a basic sandal made of old tire and beaten leather straps. The luxury of adventure asks us, at its most basic, to actively participate in choosing to treat ourselves as well as our inner most desires crave, asks us to expect, to see, the greatest in our lives, and to choose our own adventure... and do it while finding the luxury of the moment.

ith the launch of his first global grooming brand, HOUSE 99, David Beckham (in partnership with L’Oréal) is aiming to provide all the tools men need to experiment with their look and express their own “evolving style and unique identity”. The collection is extensive and includes 21 products, taking a holistic approach to grooming and merging British barbershop culture and style with hair, skin, beard and tattoo creativity. HOUSE 99 launches in retail stores across 20 countries, in March 2018. As one of the world’s most famous male style icons, David Beckham continues to challenge the notion of what it means to be “masculine”. Notoriously experimenting and reinventing his own image, the London-born footballer historically made caring about your style and changing your look acceptable amongst men. He inspired a generation and redefined ‘male culture’ across the globe. Driven by this desire to revolutionize society’s take on grooming as part of modern masculinity, HOUSE 99 was built with the ambition to offer exceptional innovative formulas to men who are not afraid to explore their own unique style and express their identity. Merging David Beckham’s legacy of new looks with British barbershop culture and applying the technical expertise of L’Oréal labs, the HOUSE 99 product line has been carefully engineered over the last two years, to create an all-new grooming brand, home to every guy’s next look.

TRENDS LFWM 2018 by Darren Kennedy
N
ow in its eleventh season, London Fashion Week Men’s (LFWM) continues to prove that the menswear shows are not merely a Fashion Week afterthought, but a big business event that is bustling with energy and creativity. The London menswear shows continue to be a championing platform for new designers, who not only reflect the zeitgeist, but cut through it to reveal designs that are at once subversive, innovative and fresh. While household names such as Vivienne Westwood proved that fashion is political in a brief video presentation, other designers such as Bobby Abley showcased the more playful and fun side to fashion, with both sides of the coin often melding together in some designers’ presentations in celebrations of individuality and diversity. This season, collections also felt distinctly international, reflective of a societal shift towards a more inclusive state. Stand out trends include:
1
A Return to Youth This season, there was a clear wave of nostalgia across many of the collections, perhaps offered as an antidote to current unstable political climates or perhaps a harking back to a simpler time. Kent & Curwen, the label partly owned by David Beckham, showcased old-school bomber jackets and rugby shirts emblazoned with crests and logos in an ostensible homage to British youth culture that Beckham himself declared as “multi-generational.”
2
Oversized Silhouettes Fashion is definitely having more than just a moment with the oversized silhouette — it’s a full-blown love affair and it’s here to stay! London-based label Oliver Spencer mastered this trend for AW ’18 with a collection presented in comforting autumnal tones. Elongated sleeve lengths and billowing trousers were the order of the day for this minimalist yet fashion-forward aesthetic.
3
Texture and Textiles Dedicated to sustainable and ethical fashion design, Phoebe English’s collection was an understated yet innovative presentation. English’s approach is not only impressive in its mindfulness, but also incredibly stylish. Presenting a collection in predominantly dark hues of black and navy with clever burnt orange accents, it made for an eye-catching appeal. With wax coats crafted with fabric from British Millerain alongside cable knit sweaters and paper-like fabric shirts, the layering of various textures and textiles felt decidedly modern.
4
Drama Kings Finally, one trend that pervaded many of the catwalks and goes hand-in-hand with Fashion Week is drama and AW’18 had it aplenty. From dramatically cut coats at Casely-Hayford to the balloon-sleeve shirts and oversized capes at Chalayan, AW ’18 is all about injecting a theatrical element into your wardrobe. Casely-Hayford’s collection was a particular standout and all about reinvented shapes and adding volume where possible, to redefine masculinity. Turkish label Chalayan favored modern tailoring; taking classic pieces as a base only to reimagine them with the addition of various fabric paneling or folds to offer an unexpected take on the purportedly familiar.

MATT BOMER by Lisa Vanderpump & Mark Kurian
Designer: Todd Snyder | Photographer: Matthew Brookes Stylist: Kristina Boiano | Groomer: Brent Lavett
A
ctor, philanthropist, husband and father, Matt Bomer is the type of human that embraces his roles, both on-screen and off, with a joie de vivre and passion that is both inspiring and uplifting. The accomplished Golden Globes Winner is a multi-talented and versatile personality that has played a plethora of diverse characters –from the charmingly debonair and womanizing forger that Neal Caffrey embodied in White Collar, to his devastatingly powerful performance of AIDS victim Felix Turner in The Normal Heart– each of his roles has earned Matt a place as one of Beverly Hills Lifestyle’s favorite actors… and people. Matt Bomer has created the opportunity to portray a multitude of strong and inherently different characters… as an audience, we have been lucky enough to experience Bomer’s singular magnetism and allure in a variety of different conditions. What is so thrilling to us, is that Matt seems to have gracefully and acutely avoided being type cast in a time where many actors can’t seem to remove themselves from their familiar roles. As an actor, he seems to be paving the way for a generation to focus on the storytelling and the characters we want to see. We’ve watched him make us laugh, swoon, cry and, most importantly, make us think. His roles, as well as his off-camera persona, have encouraged us to ruminate on our own lives and how we can strive to make our world better.

"To be able to work with a group that doesn’t have the ability to stand on their own is what is most important to me." MATT BOMER 48
ON THE COVER
Sitting down with Matt, it quickly became obvious that he is not only extremely skillful but, in person, is as engaging and vibrant as we’ve seen on screen. The immediate impression one gets is that he’s not content to simply be good at his career, he wants to excel at it. Diversity and challenge don’t phase him but, instead, push him to reach new heights and accomplish more. We’ve watched as his roles have become epic; how his talent has soared through his directorial debut in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story; and how he’s approached each new encounter with the same enthusiasm and enigmatic charm. This drive and purpose seems to permeate his entire life – his passion doesn’t stop at acting and directing, but extends through his personal relationships, his home life, and his philanthropy. Indeed, although his quickly growing career is one we’ve been thrilled to follow, it is his accomplishments as a human that we want to highlight and applaud. Matt’s generous and charitable nature, that impressed us so greatly in our interview, stems from childhood and has continued to pepper his adult life. Raised in St. Louis and Texas, Matt says of his upbringing, "I was always raised to be respectful. My parents raised us to be generous and kind. I remember as a kid, my parents would always give back. Whether it was building furniture for a single mother or recognizing that all types of people could use help, I knew from a young age that those values were being instilled in me.” It’s clear that these past ideals play a large part in Matt’s present – he uses his platform to support multiple charitable organizations and to give a voice to the voiceless. What Matt tells us is his “greatest role,” is being a father to three beautiful children (with his, as he jokes, “Canadian husband” Simon Halls). It’s obvious from the way he lights up, that Matt’s biggest passion is his children; he elucidates by saying that the “greatest memory of his life is when his children entered it.” This passion obviously extends to his philanthropy; being a father is what catapulted Matt into working on behalf of children. Through work with Art of Elysium, GLSEN, and Trevor Project, Matt’s philanthropic commitment is, in his own ardent and eloquent words, “to work with children, for they do not have a voice. To be able to work with a group that doesn’t have the ability to stand on their own is what is most important to me.” It’s this selfless determination to help others that captured our hearts. Even though Matt’s charitable endeavors are largely focused on the welfare and education of children, his compassion extends to countless other organizations; from his affiliation with Gold Meets Golden to his lauded work with the David Lynch Foundation. At Beverly Hills Lifestyle Magazine, we have a very special place in our hearts for people like Matt Bomer, that use their platforms to create change, and make us realize that a person’s success is often both tempered and augmented by the way they give back. Throughout our conversation with Matt Bomer, we were enriched and inspired by his demeanor – he spoke from a place of humility and kindness; his voice is drenched in a passion that makes you want to listen. He embodies, at once, both kinds of leader we admire - a strong and impassioned voice who is groundbreaking in both the roles he takes on and his own actions - and a silent leader who makes change through his own transparency and ability to affect the conversation. His life, both personally and professionally, is led with positivity and drive – and it’s this combination that we so respect. An actor who brings us rich and diverse characters; a loving husband and incredible father; an activist that uses his platform to create lasting change… Matt Bomer reminds us that there are people we are thrilled to celebrate…and that there’s a lot of good in this crazy, crazy world.

STRAIGHT UP EIGHT WITH MATT BOMER
(8 HONEST QUESTIONS THAT WE WERE DYING TO KNOW) 1. How do you relax? Family hikes, yoga, meditation, movie nights
← 8
2. Do you have a strange addiction? I’m trying to stay off of my phone more, particularly around the kids. There are a lot of things that I enjoy that I deprive myself of when I’m filming, and then use to incentivize myself to get to the finish line. It’s kind of a masochistic little system I’ve set up for myself. But the one thing I’m not sure I’ll ever give up entirely is coffee. My AeroPress ritual is a steady part of my morning routine. 3. Favorite movie of the year? Call Me By Your Name - beautiful, profound, resonant, and the performances and direction were incredible. 4. Where is your favorite place in the world? The southern coast of Italy - Positano and Ravello. 5. You have a lot of followers…but who are some of your favorite people to follow? Anyone who makes me laugh, or look at something in a new light. And artists or people who inspire me. 6. What makes you ner vous? Far too many things. And strangely, it’s often the little things, not the big ones. Although given the current climate in our country these days, it’s the big things as well. 7. What do you do when you’re ner vous? It depends on what I’m ner vous about. I usually take some deep breaths and remind myself that there’s no way out but through. I try to get out of my own way. In regards to what’s going on in the world, I try to stay informed, and do what I can to help. 8. What is on your DVR? American Crime Story: Versace

ART & CULTURE
NICHOLAS' GIFT by Jenni Pulos Photographer - Taili Song Roth | Stylist - Neil Cohen
I
n a time where being silenced is no longer acceptable, my nephew has found his voice through his vibrant art. At 22 years old, he speaks only a few words, but his artwork has filled the canvas with all the emotions of his heart and soul.
I have searched most of my life to understand what makes a great artist. Nicholas exemplifies what I believe it takes. Hard work, failure, passion, empathy, tenacity, and joy. He has suffered medically his whole life and doctors weren’t sure if he would survive. Despite these incredible challenges, he never lost his joy. Art became an outlet for him several years ago since he could not have a regular 9 to 5 job due to a brain tumor and over forty thousand seizures throughout his lifetime. Little by little, his hard work, and what we all thought of as therapy, blossomed into an exciting career. Last April, his first show in Los Angeles at The De Re Gallery gathered 850 people; a near sellout show and several large commissions including Kaiser Permanente. His voice, radiating on canvas, is rich and obviously speaks to many. Nicholas’ expression on canvas now lives in homes around the world, with his art speaking individually to each person who responds to his work. I am thrilled when I hear my nephew called an exceptional young artist, whose future is unexpectedly bright. Nicholas has an incredible support system, something we all need in order to thrive, in any career. So what does the future hold? We all ask ourselves that. What I have learned from my nephew is that that thought doesn’t occur to him, because he lives in the moment. He lives day by day, grateful that he can create. What a beautiful existence and something we should all strive for. He only knows how to live wider and deeper, and that is why his art is so exhilarating. His third show just finished in his home town at the Heather James Fine Art Gallery in Palm Desert. Works from his personal collection will be on display at the LaQuinta Art Museum April 5th through June 8th, as a featured exhibit. I constantly thank my beautiful nephew and friend Nicholas who has taught me the meaning of finding your voice. The meaning of trusting the process. The meaning of silencing negativity and a disproving and often judgmental society. The meaning of faith in God no matter the circumstances. The meaning of failing on your way to triumph. I hope you all can have the opportunity to hear his voice speak to you through his art…trust me, it will rock your world.

ELLIS BROOKLYN PROFILE
from pacific palisades to brooklyn, how i discovered my signature perfume by Annemarie Jones
T
here’s nothing better than a great referral. Though we live in an era of plenty—by that, I mean both options and choice—sometimes the sheer variety of it all can be numbing. That’s how I got hooked on the Skin Deep column, by Bee Shapiro, in the New York Times. Every month or so there would be a new fabulous person featured. Sometimes it was a well-known celebrity like Gwyneth Paltrow or Zoë Kravitz (could she be any more beautiful?) and other times it was an interesting influencer type (lately, Chriselle Lim and Arielle Charnas) who had an impressive line-up of serums that I would then go out and hunt down. The column became my de facto edit when I went beauty shopping. Last fall, Shapiro also came out with the Skin Deep book that handily compiled all the columns together which I snatched up and gifted—because sharing is caring, right? So it was perhaps to my surprise that I discovered, by chance, while browsing at The Apartment by The Line on Melrose, that she had started a perfume line too, called Ellis Brooklyn and based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Traveling, as my family has done so much of in recent years, I’ve come to the conclusion that home is where the heart is, but also where your favorite scents are. I later checked out the brand’s candles and body milks at Credo near the Beverly Center, which are sustainable and with clean formulations (win-win!). But it was the Ellis Brooklyn Fable Eau de Parfum that really won me over. It’s a neroli-petitgrain composition that isn’t oversweet, while still matching the freshness of the California lifestyle. As luck would have it, my husband Fletcher Jones found something for himself on that shopping trip too. He now wears Raven from the brand, which is a unisex peony-patchouli and, hush-hush, will be Bobby Axelrod’s Manhattan penthouse scent on Billions for this coming season. I like to think of it as the power scent to go with your power suit.

BEAUTY& ESSEX by Pandora Vanderpump Sabo

he new Beauty & Essex in Los Angeles is the third location of the New York staple, and it has quickly worked its way into the heart of LA’s nightlife. Nestled near the foot of the Hollywood Hills, Beauty & Essex is a visually vibrant and architecturally stunning jewel whose unique décor is something to behold. Chef Chris Santos, who conceived the menu for the original location, has developed the food and beverage program at the Hollywood restaurant, a delicious array of multi-ethnic food that is as beautiful as it is delicious. A small pedestrian alley off the Dream Hotel leads to a slightly hidden, gated courtyard at the front of the restaurant. Brick walls and a pergola covered in ivy and twinkling lights give guests a quick glimpse of what is happening inside. Tucked next to the courtyard is a tiny, funky pawn shop that acts as the entrance to Beauty & Essex. Meander past vintage jewelry, guitars and other curios before you reach the host stand – which is set below a 10-foot-tall chandelier made from beading and cut glass that runs down the center of a grand spiral staircase, and across from a wall that features an installation of rotating ballerina figurines from vintage jewelry boxes. From the moment you arrive at Beauty & Essex, you know you’re somewhere unique. Taking the essence of the New York location, the restaurant is organized into different rooms, each with its own character and experience. From playful red-velvet hexagon shelving that displays cut glass decanters, to tufted leather sofas and custom embroidered peacock panels and feathers, the décor is as unusual as it is exquisite. Shimmering beaded drapery lines the women’s bathroom; an architectural structure composed of sensuously draped and gathered pearl strands that radiate from the center of the ceiling adorns one lounge room, as pearl tassels grace the walls. A pair of mirrored doors and a skylight create an airy outdoor feel to the dining room, complemented by plants that give the appearance of a lush overhead garden. The large scale of the restaurant juxtaposed against the intimacy of the distinctive rooms; the unusual antique elements coupled with the modern and inspired décor; the nod to vintage history set against a current and decadent menu; all give Beauty & Essex a whimsical and unforgettable feeling that is quickly becoming an LA favorite. 85

ILLUSION V by Susan Hornbeak-Ortiz
I
llusion V, formerly known as Illusion I, is a stunningly visual 58-meter Benetti, designed inside-and-out by Lady Tina Green and her business partner Pietro Mingarelli. A superyacht that sleeps 12, Illusion V is a flawlessly-appointed, lavishly-decorated embodiment of luxury.
The superyacht’s style is a subtle melding of aesthetics, that are brought together cohesively with the prevalence of the principal theme – a simple rose in a neutral palette. This design is peppered throughout the yacht; mounted on plush leather walls, embossed and engraved into furniture, and featured in decadent embroidery on pillows, bedding and headboards. Green/Mingarelli are playful with the design, utilizing its different elements (for example, petals vs. full flowers) as well as varying the sizing and frequency of the pattern. The rose design, is both all-per vasive and subtle, never encroaching on monotony. It is at once lush and simple, and ties the different rooms and styles of the superyacht together perfectly.
89
PROFILE
Illusion V is, evidently and impeccably, designed as a home to be lived in – and, as such, it is extremely well-equipped for entertaining. The magnificent sundeck boasts clear views from the back sunloungers to the elevated foredeck spa pool. Dining areas are utilized all year round and in any weather, with clear doors that can shield against the wind. Bars are a recurring theme throughout the outdoor spaces – areas for family and guests to congregate and enjoy themselves. The upper deck can be turned into a large cinema space, with a big screen that rises out of a sideboard. The external furniture features a blend of subtly luxurious Southeast Asian influences - coconut and mother of pearl elements reminiscent of Bali and a hint of Thai with shell ornaments and Buddhas, set against a background of lush greenery. In true Green/Mingarelli style, the island-inspiration is juxtaposed against a hint of Roman-esque travertine and the delicate roses that elevate it to modern luxury at its finest.

Aside from the stunning rose-embellished dÊcor, there are a plethora of elements that make Illusion V a unique masterpiece, unlike any other superyacht. The technical design is, in itself, awe-inspiring. The design team was extremely sensitive to movement and noise, so they worked closely with Benetti to insure that the boat runs as quietly and smoothly as possible – the work was done to such a high standard that one cannot even hear the generators while at anchor for months at a time. As well as the technical aspects, the attention to detail in every element of the dÊcor is astounding. The variety of sumptuous textures and materials used throughout each room is testimony to the love and care that Green/Mingarelli put into their work.

During my journey throughout Croatia, I realized that the gift of just being was one that everyone should experience. Illusion V is a superyacht that seamlessly and flawlessly merges exquisite design with modern sensibilities and a deep-rooted sense of home. CALIFORNIA DREAMING by byDouglas Ryan Young Truesdale Photogrpahy Riker Brothers
I
was invited to tour the Rolling Hills, California home of John Blazevich and his wife, Alex. The only backstory I was given by Beverly Hills Lifestyle president and founder, Mark Kurian was, “the house is amazing, you’ll love it!” Well, perhaps it was best that I didn’t have too much information before seeing this truly amazing home, as it defies description. If you are not familiar with Rolling Hills, let me set the stage for you: Rolling Hills is one of the wealthiest communities in the United States. It sits 1,100 feet above sea level, atop the Palos Verdes Peninsula, overlooking the Los Angeles basin, San Gabriel Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. The Peninsula boasts 23 miles of scenic coastal drive, 57 miles of bridle and hiking trails, secluded beaches, equestrian centers, parks and nature centers and, of course, numerous world-class country clubs. A mere 690 residences occupy the pristine landscape of Rolling Hills and it is one of the country’s few guard-gated cities. This paradise is in Los Angeles County and is just a short drive from all that your heart desires in The City of Angels. At the very pinnacle of Rolling Hills sits Hacienda De La Paz, Estate of Peace. Entering the gates of Hacienda De La Paz, you drive through the dappled sunlight from a canopy of carob trees. The driveway is on a gentle crest of a hill and, as you approach the house, the sprawling property views unfold before you in stages. It is immediately evident that romance played a large part in the overall design of this home: fruit trees, flowering plants and shrubs scent the air around you, while numerous fountains lend their soothing rhythm to the atmosphere. You immediately feel transported to another time and place and it becomes evident that Estate of Peace is the most apt description of this property. John and Alex greet me in the courtyard and, although my tour is just beginning, I’m already smitten.

INTERIORS
The estate encompasses over 7 acres of property, enough to build a very large home. But, because of the building restrictions of Rolling Hills, such as a one-story height limit, and a footprint for the (future) structure limited to 7,500 square feet, there were some initial roadblocks to Blazevich’s dream. Undeterred, John pursued his passion and found imaginative ways to achieve his goals. And thus began a 17 year odyssey designing and building this dream. The majority of homes in Rolling Hills are built in the California Ranch or Spanish Hacienda styles, lending design continuity to this idyllic community. Inspired by Southern California’s rich Spanish history, John settled on the Hacienda style for his future home and hired local architect Anthony Inferrera and Spanish architect Rafael Manzano Martos, who ser ved for two decades as curator to Spain’s Royal Family, to bring his vision to fruition. The core of John’s vision was to create a living work of art; a home that would not only make an impact, but also stand the test of time. Through meticulous building and design practices, he has created an enduring testament not only to California’s rich cultural history, but to centuries of styles all encompassed under one roof. Perhaps the most remarkable feature of this home is that it is 51,000 square feet; 31,000 of which are subterranean. The 20,000 square feet of living quarters are all above ground. The home’s amenities (indoor tennis court, indoor pool, Turkish hammam, wine room, yoga studio, gym and lounges) are hidden from view, five stories below ground. If you’re wondering how the living quarters passed the planning commission’s 7,500 square foot limit, so was I. It turns out, Rolling Hills’ square foot limit applies only to wood sided structures. The Blazevich residence is an adobe structure and therefore falls outside of these parameters. The adobe walls throughout the home are two to three feet thick, which provide excellent insulation and soundproofing… not to mention underscoring a sense of permanence to the home. John researched each and every element and building material that went into his house. There is virtually nothing that was overlooked, including wall studs, door hardware, bricks, or even the wood floors. For example, the adobe blocks used for the exterior walls and terra cotta roof tiles used in the construction were hand made by the same people who restore the historic Missions in Northern California. The limestone used for the cobbled courtyard was sourced in Portugal and hand-cut by and installed by Portuguese masons. The bricks used for the courtyards, outdoor steps and interior floor borders were cast in custom sizes, using Spanish clay, replicating bricks from the 18th Century. The wood floors throughout the home were milled from 500-year-old pine trees that were felled 300 years ago, found submerged in Georgia riverbeds. The color and patina of this wood is so rich from age, that no stains were necessary to finish the floors. The intricate wood ceilings found in the formal salon and dining rooms were designed and hand made in Spain. There are no nails used in either of these ceilings, rather each one is composed of up to 18 interlocking parts. The ceilings were disassembled, shipped to California, and installed on site by the same Spanish artisans who created them. The large family room doubles as a home theater and, to make sure the finished room was acoustically perfect, it was actually built and tested on a sound stage. The interiors of Hacienda De La Paz are sumptuously decorated in a European style. Under less-skilled guidance, the home’s 51,000 square feet would seem over whelming, but, in fact, there is a palpable intimacy in every room of this house. The decoration, even when formal, remains captivating, comfortable and inviting. John’s wife, Alex, is a Cordon Bleu trained chef, so to meet the needs of the most discerning foodie, Hacienda De La Paz is equipped with four kitchens and two kitchenettes; several outdoor food prep areas, one with a pizza oven; facilities for pressing oil from olives har vested on the property; and more than 100 fruit trees, including lemons, oranges, avocados, figs and, naturally, olives. There’s also a large vegetable garden and herbs planted around the estate. And if all of this weren’t enough, a treasure trove of amenities awaits below. For me, the biggest “wow” factor of Hacienda De La Paz was to be found in the indoor pool and hammam. Encompassing 10,000 square feet, the azure blue pool is surrounded by a colonnade and surmounted by a domed, sandstone ceiling, perforated with light emitting stars. The marble columns are capped with hand car ved sandstone capitols, which are exact replicas of columns found at the Alhambra. All of the sandstone for these spaces was sourced in Morocco. Over 300 Moroccan masons car ved each block that make up the arches, walls and domed ceiling. Following tradition, no mortar was used to secure these stone blocks together. Each piece was fitted, numbered, shipped to the site in California, and reassembled. It is an extraordinary site to behold. The pool is kept at 94 degrees and yet the air in the room is devoid of humidity or the smell of chlorine; the air-handling systems are cleverly concealed from view. Adjoining the pool area is an authentic Turkish hammam, complete with a raised, heated marble “bed” for massages. Flanking the hammam are two lounges, or majlis, which translates to “a place of sitting.” Each of these spaces is authentically recreated in a style dating back a thousand years. Of course, there is
105

also a Turkish-style bath. The walls here are paved with 24 karat gold leaf Murano glass mosaic tiles, with side-by-side marble soaking tubs, and an incredible shower with a ceiling mounted spout, fourteen feet above your head, that massages the body like a waterfall. Using either one of the home’s elevators, or one of the secret passageways, you descend down to access the indoor tennis court. The court is built to US Open specifications and the surrounding architecture is reminiscent of Vienna’s Lippizan arena. The tennis court has the ability to morph into a formal ballroom, capable of seating 350 guests, including a stage for a 30-piece orchestra and dance floor. Catering kitchens are concealed behind the arena’s walls, and the space includes a sound and lighting booth which can accommodate any type of professional musical performance. What comes across in all the incredible attention to detail in the Blazevich’s home is the passion John had in creating it. He always demanded excellence from his architects and the hundreds of craftspeople who were entrusted with creating his vision. I heard a story of a particular fireplace that had to be taken apart and rebuilt because it was 1 ½” off the centerline of the room. While this most likely displeased the mason, the work was redone to John’s exacting standards without complaint. This is because everyone took enormous pride in their work… and it shows. Keep in mind that most of the core people involved in creating this masterpiece were on the job for a decade or more. And what would keep you coming back to a job like this for so long? Love and pride in one’s work. It is very difficult to convey in words or pictures the extraordinary nature of this home. Superlatives don’t do justice to the experience. The property alone, with its 180 degree views of the beaches, downtown LA and the San Gabriel Mountains are mind-blowing enough. But add to that a home that is on a par with Hearst Castle, or the Getty Villa, and you begin to understand the impact this estate has on the psyche. You really have to experience it for yourself. So, I encourage you to pay John and Alex a visit. They are the most gracious hosts, and I guarantee you’ll be as smitten as I was by Hacienda De La Paz. This extraordinary home is currently listed for sale and is represented by the luxury premier real estate firm The Oppenheim Group, led by Jason Oppenheim.

HEALTH & BEAUTY
keracell | the formula for beauty, inside and out by Bradley Ryan
B
eauty is a word both subjective and versatile. It can be used to describe appearance, music, art and, as I discovered, something deeper. After recently celebrating International Women’s Day, and with Mother’s Day fast approaching, it’s only appropriate that this story focuses on not one, but two passionate and motivated women, Susan Raffy and Ekin Ozlen. These two women represent a successful mother-daughter duo with a heart and drive that can only be summed up with one word… beautiful. Motivation fueled the success of KERACELL, where it began, as most innovative products do, with personal necessity. Susan Raffy found herself in a situation that forced her to deal with increasing hair loss. Her refusal to succumb to this predicament had her spending hours in the lab in a search to create a product that could return her to her own sense of beauty. Amazingly, her drive and relentlessness eventually led to the premium hair and skincare line we know today, KERACELL, a clinically validated line that delivers innovative human stem-cell technology for rapid and effective results. Passion is one trait that both the KERACELL leaders have in no short supply. Susan Raffy possesses 30 years’ experience as a world-renowned cosmetics chemist (or, as she is more widely known, a “Rockstar Chemist”) while her daughter, Ekin Ozlen, utilizes her years as a Ford model and skincare expert to add a face to the brand and market all that the products offer. Together, these two women are a prime example of how women today are breaking through glass ceilings and achieving milestones that serve as an inspiration to all. Heart is perhaps the most unique form of beauty and, with the founders of KERACELL, there’s plenty to go around. These two women are involved in several charities and organizations and donate untold amounts of resources towards them. The Beauty Bus is a charity that is especially close to their hearts and is perhaps one of the best examples of how KERACELL’s success has helped to bring others joy. The Beauty Bus foundation delivers dignity, hope and respite to chronically or terminally ill people through beauty, grooming services and pampering and KERACELL is their go-to for skin and hair care products. Nestled cozily within over 500 private acres in Vista, just North of San Diego, Cal-a-Vie Health Spa is blanketed with wildflowers, lavender, vineyards and dramatic stands of oak, olive and citrus trees. Adjacent to the 18-hole golf course and Vista Valley Country Club also owned by Cal-a-Vie, the French Provencal-style retreat is a haven for guests seeking a respite from the chaos of the world. In an area graced with sun-drenched temperatures year-round, Cal-a-Vie is lovingly designed with attention to detail and carefully curated aesthetics. With 32 private Mediterranean-style villas, Cal-a-Vie combines luxurious European spa philosophies with the California concepts of fitness, health and nutrition. Each guest is assigned one of the villas, complete with either a sun deck or balcony opening onto an expanse of breathtaking wilderness. Nature enters through each shuttered window in visual glimpses and fragrant wafts from bougainvillea, sweetheart roses, jasmine, lavender, and citrus blossoms. The rustic elegance and natural environment is thoughtfully integrated into the retreat’s design, to enhance and heighten the effects of both the therapeutic and fitness programs. The spirit of Provence is evoked not only in the landscape, but also in the décor. French antiques fill the rooms, including intricately hand-carved furniture in light oak, dark walnut, and pine. Inspired by the original French artwork and antiques found throughout Cal-a-Vie, the Antique store was created in response to popular requests from guests looking to bring a piece of Cal-a-Vie’s original French Provencal décor home with them. The shop provides guests with exclusive access to a spectacular array of 18th and 19th century pieces imported directly from France.

ANDAZ by Tristan Schukraft
A
fter taking the red-eye, the hotel driver was a welcome sight outside arrivals, as was his collection of beverages and cool towels. It’s a short 30-minute ride to the eco-resort complex of Mayakoba - a Jurassic Park like setting with less dangerous residents where, once inside, golf carts give way to resident iguanas. Just North of Playa del Carmen, this oceanfront nature reser ve encompasses 240 acres of tropical forest, mangroves and six miles of crystal clear water ways with an abundance of wildlife, including 200 species of birds and on this visit, my Chihuahua (the resort is pet friendly.) The circular open-air lobby, with reflecting pond denoting the many local underground natural wells known as Cenotes, is our starting point. From there, we hop on the golf cart to our oceanfront suite, over a mile from the hotel lobby. The resort’s 214 rooms and 41 suites, with private plunge pools, a welcome departure from the mega resorts of nearby Cancun, are spread across 28 buildings enveloped by lagoons, lush vegetation and winding nature trails. Most of the buildings are located around the lobby, and one of its two pools. Our expansive suite with walk-in rain shower, Nespresso coffee maker and endless supply of complimentary snacks and refreshments each day, can better be described as a private oceanfront villa situated on the most beautiful secluded white sand beach. Holding true to the Andaz ethos, interiors are bright and contemporary, with splashes of color brought in with local Mexican art, tile and furniture. It’s elevated luxury that’s more hip, modern and relaxed. Further enhancing this feeling are several vibrant and colorful murals throughout the resort, created by local Riviera Maya graffiti artist, Senkoe. The collection of villas is separated from the main area of the resort, but two of the resorts restaurants, OllaTaco and OllaCeviche - ser ving delicious Yucatan specialties, elevated street food, ceviches and other seafood - are here, as is the expansive beachfront pool. In total, there are four on-site restaurants incorporating fresh local ingredients and flavor. Cocina Milagro, offers all-day buffets with an evolving menu and mouthwatering baked goods made on-site each day. Casa Amate is an upscale dining option with Latin American dishes featuring a unique concept of various intimate dining rooms with terraces overlooking the lagoon, where each menu item notes its origin, such as the octopus from Peru or the chorizo from Argentina. There is also 24-hour room ser vice. The resort is expansive, but it is easy to get around. There are complimentary bikes that you can pick-up and drop-off throughout the resort, or a call will give you a “lift” from the many on-demand golf carts, each inscribed with an individual quote inspired by the freedom of flight. While at times we felt isolated from the rest of the resort enjoying the seclusion of the beachfront, at the same time we felt very much at home. The staff gets to know you quickly, making the regular cart journeys a great time to share highlights of the day.

"Jump, and you will find out how to unfold your wings as you fall"
For me, the pristine shoreline and seductive turquoise waters were enough, but the resort has much more to offer. For those seeking a spa experience, the 10,000 square-foot Naum Spa offers a customized menu of ser vices they refer to as Naum Rituals. Treatments are designed to allow guests to pay homage to the Mayan Gods as well as themselves. Once recharged, there is a well-equipped fitness center with complimentary yoga and pilates each day. If sunbathing, playing in the water, and the spa are not enough activity for you, the list of alternatives are endless, with the highlight for golfers being the El Camaleón Golf Club at Mayakoba, featuring an 18-hole golf course designed by PGA legend Greg Norman. The par 72 layout features distinctive hazards as it winds through an area of preser ved mangroves.

FLORENCE FLORENCE'S LUNGARNO COLLECTION by Bobby Ciletti
P
lanning the perfect vacation can be an exceptional amount of work…which should not come as a surprise, as most things that are worthwhile in life require varying degrees of commitment, awareness, time & resources. The anticipation and anxiety associated with planning a vacation can be incapacitating, which is why it is often easier to put off planning, leave it in someone else's hands or select the obvious five-star hotel. That could land you a safe bet. However, when you are traveling somewhere as rich and unique as Florence, Italy, being safe rarely leads to the extraordinary. Being habitual may be fine for just any vacation, but being unprecedented can unlock the core of Florence. As the capital of Italy’s Tuscany region, Florence represents over 2000 years of being unprecedented. It is this characteristic that allowed Florence’s Golden Age to flourish around 1000AD. By the 15th century, Florence emerged as one of the largest cities in Europe. In the 1950s it was Italy’s capital of fashion. It is home to countless Renaissance masterpieces, architectural mar vels, elite artisans and fashion houses, which have stood the test of time, as some of the world’s most cherished treasures. A destination so legendary begs to be explored in an unexpected, unordinary and unprecedented way. And it can, thanks to the Lungarno Collection. Propelling this exclusive hotel collection for ward is a tie to one of Florence’s most iconic designers, Salvatore Ferragamo. Owned & operated by the Ferragamo family, the Lungarno collection is comprised of several hotels throughout Italy. At the helm of the Lungarno Collection is, President Leonardo Ferragamo, son to the famed designer, who pays tribute to his father’s legacy of fashion & hospitality with four exceptionally unique & Florentine hotel experiences. Each hotel in this luxurious collection honors the Ferragamo passion for creativity and craftsmanship, while genuinely reflecting the exquisite taste that is unmistakably Florentine style. While each of its four hotels inspires a different occasion or caters to the needs, tastes & preferences of a specific traveler, they are, together, cohesive like a family. The Lungarno Collection invites you to find a reflection of yourself in Florence, whether you crave classic or contemporary, romantic, or something with an eclectic personality. Like the perfect pair of shoes, there is a tailor-made hotel & experience that will be the perfect fit for your time in Florence. And, like shoes, nobody is stopping your from buying just one pair. Discover these four distinct hotels, steps from Florence’s treasures, each possessing its own unmistakable character, yet still typically Florentine. They honor its Renaissance past & tradition of elite craftsmanship. Thanks to Lungarno Collection traveling to Italy has never been more beautiful.

PORTRAIT Hospitality, like fashion, is an art, which is why the aptly named Portrait Firenze is such a masterpiece. Heralding the concept of bespoke tourism, the Portrait has shattered uniform luxury and replaced it with personalization. Guests easily recognize they are not in a typical luxury hotel, but an incredibly personal place. This five star, all suite property resides on an intimate off street address in the center of Florence. It poses irresistible charm & style. It prides itself on offering something you cannot find somewhere else, “a hotel built around a city, a suite built around you, and experiences tailored to your lifestyle. Our goal is to make your stay a portrait of you.” Its 37 rooms are harmoniously classic and contemporary, fusing warm wood and opaque greys. Soft materials like cozy cashmere are welcoming in this hotel that is basking in a glow of gilded finishes and shimmering steel. Every suite has a concealed kitchen that can unfold at a moment’s notice. Each suite takes on its own identity featuring many personal touches tailored to each guest. This is what makes Portrait better than perfect. PROPERTY HIGHLIGHTS Caffè dell’Oro - The Portrait’s signature restaurant is open all day. Featuring Italian cuisine with a beautiful view over the Ponte Vecchio. It is a salon with kitchen— warm, inviting, with plenty of gastronomic delights. Portrait Penthouse Ponte Vecchio Suite - The ultimate vantage point for Florence. This nearly 1,300 square foot suite features two beds, two bathrooms, kitchen, living area and a full facade terrace overlooking the Arno River from the 6th floor. GALLERY Gallery or hotel? The name is adding another layer to the hospitality & fashion party— art. While most hotels feature art to accent the design & locale of their property, the Gallery is in a different league. It houses a new, year-long art exhibition every calendar year. You may imagine that housing exhibitions from names like David Lachapelle, Steven Klein or Lise Sarfati would mean the hotel guests are taking a back seat to the collections it hosts. This could not be further from reality. Just like the irreplaceable artwork that it features, the hotel’s staff extends the same care & attention to detail to every guest staying there. While it is technically designated a four-star hotel, Gallery seems to rather easily exceed that ranking. The hotel houses 74 rooms & suites along with its rotating art exhibitions. The style is unmistakably welcoming, comfortable and soothing. For guests with the privilege of staying on an upper level of the hotel, you will likely find your suite is accompanied by a generous terrace with breathtaking views of some of Florence’s most prized landmarks like the Duomo & Ponte Vecchio. The hotel’s avant-garde spaces were dreamt up by Florentine architect, Michele Bönan, who designed all four of the Lungarno Collection’s hotels in Florence. The hotel’s central location, combined with its art collection and design, makes it a favorite meeting place for Florence’s fashionable inhabitants. PROPERTY HIGHLIGHTS Suite Gallery - The spacious suites offer a few configurations. For those seeking something special, reser ve a suite on the 7th floor. Many of those rooms offer terraces with accompanying views that would make the Medici family jealous.

CONTINENTALE Just across the way from Gallery, is the younger, more vibrant and yet romantic design of the Continentale. The Continentale almost has an LA vibe to it. Slightly more casual than its counterparts, but never sacrificing fashion. This is the place to see & be seen. The design is simple & chic. The interiors are elegant, washed in whites. The atmosphere at Continentale emphasizes serenity, simplicity, and fantasy. Guests are treated to Bönan's refined design and inventive touches throughout the property, including desks fashioned from handmade leather trunks along with clocks used as a side table. PROPERTY HIGHLIGHTS Panoramic Consorti Suite - The first level of this suite has a dramatically scaled canopy bed that seems to stretch two levels. On the second level, find a sprawling bathroom with a king-sized bathtub with views of the Duomo, while also peering into the lower level of the suite. La Terrazza - This rooftop hot spot also echoes the LA vibes. The simplistic theme continues here and for good cause, the views are stunning and should not be interrupted. Be sure to reser ve a table in advance, because the sunset is spectacular from this haven.
LUNGARNO The namesake hotel of the collection is fresh off a six-month renovation commemorating its 50th anniversary. The Hotel Lungarno seamlessly exists with the River Arno. You cannot help but be drawn in by the views, almost as if you are on a majestic yacht floating down the Arno. Perhaps that is why Bönan chose a design evoking classic nautical motifs to enhance this enchanting back drop. In fact, Michele Bönan describes Hotel Lungarno as “like a grand cruise ship sailing down the river, this period townhouse is the only one that literally sits over the Arno. Colors such as blue and white were used to accentuate the sense of being, endlessly drifting on the Arno but with the Ponte Vecchio (Florence's iconic symbol) as your point of reference. The sense of sailing, the constant river view contrasted beautifully with that of a cozy home. This included adding 400 pieces of art from Picasso, Bueno to Cocteau in the lobbies and guestrooms.” The hotel boasts 65 rooms & suites and many feature terraces overlooking the splendid city and river. To think millions of people visit Florence each year to see these sights, and the Hotel Lungarno presents the rare opportunity to wake up to them each morning. PROPERTY HIGHLIGHTS Borgo San Jacopo - Visit the hotel’s Michelin starred restaurant by Chef Peter Brunel for a dining experience that will rival the ever-impressive river views. You are sure to find a wine to pair with each course, the restaurant hosts 900 labels in its cellar. The Private Terrace - For those seeking the ultimate in romance, reser ve The Private Terrace. Chef Brunel will treat you to a dazzling dinner over the river Arno looking toward the Ponte Vecchio, complete with candlelight and stars.

GIADA! BRUSCHETTA WITH BURRATA AND KALE SALSA VERDE by Giada De Laurentiis
M
y California side comes through loud and clear in this dish that I came up with in Florence. It’s full of Tuscan flavors and healthy greens for the best of both worlds. The kale salsa is similar to a pesto but looser, so the bread softens as it absorbs the salsa. Topped with silky burrata, it’s perfect with a glass of wine.
For the salsa: 1 1/2 cups chopped Tuscan kale (about 8 large leaves), stems removed 1 clove garlic, smashed and peeled 1/4 teaspoon plus 1/8 teaspoon kosher salt 3 tablespoons capers, drained and rinsed 1 teaspoon anchovy paste 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1 loaf ciabatta bread, cut in half horizontally 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 pound burrata or mozzarella cheese (about 2 medium balls) 8 oil marinated sundried tomatoes, coarsely chopped 3 tablespoons pine nuts, toasted In the bowl of a food processor, pulse together the kale and garlic until roughly chopped. Add the salt, capers, anchovy paste, mustard and vinegar and pulse once or twice more. Add the olive oil and and process for 5 seconds. Set aside to let the flavors marry. Preheat a grill pan over high heat. Drizzle both halves of the bread evenly with the olive oil. Grill for about 2 minutes on each side or until golden brown and charred in a few spots. Remove the bread to a cutting board. Spoon the salsa verde evenly over each half of bread. Tear the burrata over the salsa verde and sprinkle the tomatoes and pine nuts evenly over the tops. Cut the bread halves into slices and serve. Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 5 minutes Serves: 6 Serve with: Italian Beer

SPRING SEAFOOD! step into spring with seafood fare by Stuart O’Keefe
A
s Spring creeps in we start to think about lighter fare. Whenever the cold chill starts to subside here in Los Angeles, I start cooking a lot more seafood and incorporating it into my diet. Like most people, I guess I associate warmer weather with fresh seafood. We are lucky in Los Angeles, we have some of the best seafood this country has to offer. We are all spoiled!!! Here are 3 of my favorite seafood recipes that you can whip up in no time.
CHOWDERED SCALLOPS Scallops are really easy to cook and they take wonderfully to chowder. Bacon adds a smoky base to the hearty dish, while corn brings a touch of sweetness. Serves 4 PREP 6 minutes COOK 30 minutes CLEAN 6 minutes Ingredients: 4 slices bacon, chopped 16 medium Sea Scallops, patted dry 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 2 shallots, minced 6 Yukon gold potatoes, cut into ½-inch cubes ¾ cup chicken broth ½ cup heavy cream

1½ cups frozen corn or fresh, thawed
5. Season cod on both sides with salt and pepper. Then place fish carefully into pan, rolling the fish away from you so the oil does not splatter. Cook on each side for 3 to 4 minutes until cooked all the way through. 6. Spoon succotash onto plates. Place fish on top. Garnish with some extra fresh basil leaves and serve.
2 tablespoons chopped parsley Method: 1. In a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat, cook the bacon for about 4 to 5 minutes until crispy. Remove bacon and reserve 1 tablespoon of bacon fat in the pan.
PACKAGE-PARCELED COD
2. Season scallops with salt and pepper.
People often ask me the best way to ensure that you don’t overcook a fish. The answer is to use my secret weapon: parchment paper. When you are cooking a fish in parchment, there’s no worry about its sticking to the grill, cleanup is a breeze, and the parchment seals in moisture and flavor. Plus, there’s a sort of Zen to folding the fish within the paper.
3. Over medium heat, cook the scallops about 2 minutes each side until golden. Set aside on a plate covered with tented foil. 4. Add the shallots to the pan and cook for 3 minutes. 5. Add potatoes, broth, and cream together. Bring to a simmer and cook for 12 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Add the corn and scallops to the pan and cook for a further 3 minutes.
Serves 4
6. Place 4 scallops on each plate. Spoon sauce over and sprinkle with parsley and bacon.
PREP 6 minutes COOK 15 minutes CLEAN 6 minutes
PAN-SEARED COD with SUCCOTASH Ingredients: Serves 4 16 asparagus spears, trimmed 1 inch from the ends 4 6-ounce cod fillets 1 lemon, sliced into 4 rounds 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper ¼ cup lemon juice (about 3 lemons) 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 4 sprigs fresh thyme
PREP 6 minutes COOK 20 minutes CLEAN 6 minutes Ingredients: 3 tablespoons canola oil, divided 1 medium yellow onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon dried chili flakes 2 cups frozen corn or fresh, thawed 1 (10-ounce) package frozen lima beans, thawed 1 cup cherry tomatoes, sliced in half 2 tablespoons cider vinegar 10 basil leaves, roughly chopped, plus extra for garnish 4 6-ounce cod fillets, 1 inch thick, skinless 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 350˚F. 2. Lay out 1 large sheet (about 16” x 12”) of parchment paper. Place 4 asparagus spears in the center of the paper, then 1 fish fillet on top, then a slice of lemon. Season with salt and pepper, 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil, and 1 sprig of thyme. 3. Fold over the ends of the paper to enclose the fish.* Place on a baking sheet. Repeat with remaining fish.
Method:
4. Bake in the oven for about 12 to 15 minutes, or until fish reaches 130˚F to 135˚F on a thermometer.
1. Heat 2 tablespoons canola oil over medium-high heat in a large nonstick skillet. Add onion, lower heat to medium, and cook for 5 minutes or until onion is softened. 2. Add garlic and chili flakes together to the pan and cook for 1 minute. 3. Stir in corn, lima beans, and tomatoes and cook until tomatoes start to soften, about 4 to 6 minutes. Stir in vinegar and basil. Cover and keep warm. 4. In another large nonstick skillet, heat remaining 1 tablespoon canola oil until it begins to shimmer.
*How to Fold Parchment: Place fish and vegetables in the center of the parchment sheet. Fold in two sides of the paper to the center, then smooth down and crease the sides until the paper stays. Do the same for the remaining two sides, smoothing down and creasing the paper until it stays in place.

AESTHETIC DESIGN with doctor joubin gabba y by Bradley Ryan
F
or Dr. Joubin Gabbay, aesthetic design is part of his DNA. As the son of an architect, he has seen the world through the lens of structure and composition from quite a young age and growing up in Beverly Hills has awarded him a unique perspective on beauty and design – a perspective that was honed and sharpened as a part of his life-long education and practice in the field of medicine. During his specialized surgical training at UCLA and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Dr. Gabbay decided it was time to shake up the traditional approach and begin truly engaging with his clients. His personally developed approach, called “Discussion Based Design” ensures that he and his patients work together to find the best answers to their aesthetic needs. In his experience, these answers lie at the crossroads of the client’s desires, the anatomic capability of the body, limitations of surgical technology and Gabbay’s own expert understanding of cosmetic possiblities. In a place like Beverly Hills, where perfection, allure and luxury all demand Oscar-worthy performances, Gabbay’s dedicated craft and precision have cast him as the leading role on this grand stage. In his own words, “The journey is golden… [and] we believe that health is the ultimate luxury.”

TRAVEL&YOUR HEALTH by Dr. Jonathan Leary Photography - Rod Foster
T
ruth be told… it takes more than an apple a day to keep the doctor away. Preparation and prevention is key! We all know that we are at a higher risk of getting sick, catching something or being in pain when we travel…so why aren’t you doing something to decrease these odds? Try adding these things into your routine and allow your body to be on guard and be prepared for anything that it comes in contact with!
TAKE A HIGHER DOSE OF PROBIOTICS FOR 7 DAYS PRIOR TO LEAVING Take 10 Billion CFUs (live Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus plantarum strains) daily the week before you leave. (Stop if you start feeling bloated and lower until you find your body’s proper threshold. If you are taking certain medications make sure to consult with your doctor prior to taking supplements) SUPPLEMENT A NATURAL ANTIBOITIC ~ OREGANO OIL This nutrient is powerful! Take 2-3 drops, three times a day, the week prior and the week during your travel. Best used by dropping under your tongue, but if it is too strong dilute with water or coconut oil. A TABLESPOON OF APPLE CIDER VINEGAR Mix with 10 oz. of water, your favorite tea or even on top of your green leafy salad! Do this the week prior to your travels or start adding it into you daily routine to add an additional boost to your immune system!
141
BHL
WARM YOUR BODY WITH GINGER Add raw ginger to your morning smoothie or daily tea and allow it to cleanse your lymphatic system, destroy toxins and open up your airways! It has been clinically proven to boost your immune system and I recommend consuming it on a daily basis. COLD & SINUS LIQUID SHOTS!!! Easy to make and work wonders. All you need is fresh lemon, ginger, oregano oil, garlic extract, cayenne pepper, turmeric, horseradish & Echinacea. The moment you feel sinus pressure, a sore throat, or congestion the first thing you should is run to the market, buy these ingredients and make your own liquid remedy! I recommend 1-2, 2oz. servings a day until symptoms go away. GO 90% VEGAN I always try to eat mostly a veggie-based diet with small amounts of animal protein, but during my travels I tend to eat out, eat a lot more than normal and I have to be extra safe. Due to the amount of poor quality meats found out there I am very specific about the types that I will eat. Chances are that the meat isn’t grass fed and the chicken isn’t cage free, antibiotic free, hormone free. With that said, unless its specified, don’t eat it. Staying vegan is always safe! OPEN UP YOUR HIPS After a long flight the first thing you should do when you get a minute is stretch. No one feels nice and loose after a long flight and the last thing you want to do is ignore it. Try adding these stretches in ASAP: Figure 4 stretch, frog pose, cat camel & runners stretch. This will take the tension off your lower back! STAY ACTIVE I’m not going to make you go to the gym on your holiday (unless it’s something you enjoy), but do everything possible to keep moving. Whether it is taking the stairs instead of the elevator, doing some laps in the pool versus just laying on a float, walk to get to your destination and explore the area instead of taking a taxi. Every step or movement counts! Dr. Jonathan Leary DrJLeary.com @drjonathanleary
