LETTER from the
FOUNDER “LIFE HAS A WAY OF LAUGHING AT OUR PLANS”
Carpe Diem! That is the way I have signed off each and every issue of Beverly Hills Lifestyle Magazine. Little did I know that the phrase would not only ring true but be a HUGE part of my daily life. 10 years ago we set off on a journey to create a bespoke magazine. We wanted to create something that was both pleasing to the eye and added value to your life. 10 years later we have you to thank for the opportunity to continue the journey as we set off with wide eyes and high hopes. In a world made up either of two paragraph bites or instant disposable information people have told us that holding the magazine to the standards that we have should be celebrated. This magazine is totally personal to me. All the people and items that are in the magazine I put there for one reason or another. Being your Editor-in-Chief has been a humbling, exciting and truly cherished experience. When asked to take on the role, I did so with great pride and never thought in a million years I would ever give it up ... life has a way of laughing at our plans. When I started this role, my husband and I were doing it together. He was a man helping me when I wasn’t sure what the next steps would be. How things have changed. My husband, a man of brilliance, success, humor, laughter and a personality that would light up a room, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. As the disease has unfortunately progressed, it is time for me to step down, take care of my husband and pass the baton, so that I can help my husband on this journey. My decision to find a replacement wasn’t difficult. Quickly after I made the decision to step down I knew exactly who I needed to ask to take my place. I needed someone who would be an organic ask and I knew in my heart that it needed to be Lisa Vanderpump. Lisa is a woman of class, elegance with a true sense of what it means to be a woman of the 21st century. Here’s to the next 10 years! All my love, CARPE DIEM.....
LETTER from the
EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
TO ALL OF YOU…
It is such an incredible honor to be asked to be Editor-in-Chief of this illustrious publication. Beverly Hills Lifestyle Magazine has always been the epitome of luxury to me; a veritable reservoir of all things lavish, gorgeous or unique. Each glossy page of this beautiful, elegant magazine has captivated me from the moment I first picked it up. My relationship with the magazine began with its inception in 2007. Over the past ten years, I have worked very closely with the Beverly Hills Lifestyle team and enjoyed every moment of it. Writing is a passion of mine and being able to showcase my love of design, travel and entertaining through my articles has been a great joy. Luxury can mean many different things to different people and I have loved sharing my perspective with all of you. Having the opportunity to delve even deeper into the editorial world is something I look forward to with great enthusiasm. Beverly Hills is a unique place to live. Nestled in the heart of palm-tree lined Los Angeles, this city is a diverse and multi-cultural melding of glamour, prestige and rich history. The city, boasting some of the most beautiful stores, hotels and restaurants in the world, is an opulent treasure trove with so much to offer. Yet, it is often the people behind the allure that are the most interesting. Our new team is comprised of some of my favorite authorities on luxury and I cannot wait to see all of their ideas unfold – as I said, luxury is different for everyone. Together, we hope to combine all of these unique perspectives into a rich tapestry that will excite and delight every one of our readers. Choosing Elizabeth Taylor for the cover of our 10-year anniversary issue was a natural decision for me, and one that we all find fits extremely closely with the magazine’s history and values. To me, Elizabeth Taylor is the essence of Beverly Hills lifestyle – she exuded elegance and class, not only through her glamour and poise, but through her humanitarian work. In celebration of the magazine’s anniversary, we wanted a cover that epitomized not only Beverly Hills’ legendary charm and sophistication, but something that spoke to our efforts in the community moving forward. Elizabeth Taylor was the embodiment of someone who believed wholeheartedly in compassionate philanthropy. Renowned for her efforts within the LGBTQ community, Elizabeth Taylor was always a passionate voice for inclusion and acceptance, not simply tolerance, and that is something that resonates deeply with me. As Editor-in-Chief, one of the main aspects of Beverly Hills Lifestyle Magazine that I am thrilled to immerse myself in is their love of philanthropy. I work very closely with a variety of charities that are dear to my heart, and have always been dear to BHL’s too, including Keep Memory Alive. Each month we will highlight a different charity, as well as try and tie in a philanthropic aspect to all of our plans and events. I’m excited to use this opportunity to draw attention to some wonderful causes. Thank you for welcoming me as your new Editor-in-Chief; I am eagerly anticipating this new chapter and cannot wait to begin our journey together! Love always,
BHL

AN ODE TO BEVERLY HILLS By Mark Kurian
“PRINT IS DEAD”... said a mentor of ours 10 years ago. Well, 40 issues, over 1200 stories, 2.5 million+ readers, and over $30 million dollars raised for various charities later, we beg to differ. 10 years ago, Beverly Hills Lifestyle Magazine started with a dream and a desire to prove everyone that said we wouldn’t make it a year wrong. All those people did not know what we were capable of. They hadn’t seen the large format, high impact black and white covers that we were setting out to create. No one knew that this magazine would become a bespoke magazine that filled a gap in the luxury market – one that focused not only on luxury, but a desire to honor and cherish the art of storytelling. It started with the need to share that which inspired us; we were never concerned with competing with our counterparts, but instead wanted to share a lifestyle that was both lavish and meaningful, visually stunning yet heartfelt. It was imperative to the BHL family to celebrate the people behind the brands, the cars, the yachts and the world that we all have come to know as the Beverly Hills lifestyle. Coming from a family of Hollywood royalty, my family knew we wanted to pay tribute to the classic, highbrow, and precious work of my grandfather. A man who did everything with excellence and, to this day, has his work celebrated. From working side by side with Lucille Ball, Fred Astaire, and Ginger Rogers; to having a personal friendship with Katherine Hepburn; our grandfather Argyle Nelson was the inspiration for Beverly Hills Lifestyle. Growing up hearing stories about these greats, hearing about their love for what they did and the vast knowledge of how they defined a generation and continue to do so, we wanted to create something that both spoke to the past and helped shape our future. It was always our vision that the magazine be an ode to old Hollywood, while still looking and moving for ward. BHL has actively, and some would say courageously, stormed right to the front of the print media world and created a magazine that is both distinguished and revered. Our features have mimicked this same blend of past and present. From a photo shoot in the Peninsula Hotel’s Room 23 and a stunning and contemporary fashion shoot called Hollywood in the Holy Land; to amazing men and women like Tom Hanks, Cate Blanchett and Kristin Chenoweth gracing our covers; to showcasing classic and iconic pictures of James Dean and Marilyn Monroe; after 10 years of reflection and innovation, it’s thrilling to contemplate where we go from here. Beverly Hills Lifestyle Magazine is dedicated to being the ultimate resource for everything luxury, and for the stories that inspire you to find your own luxury in whatever way appeals to you - whether it be by finding an extravagant item or by learning about an incredible charity. When you become inspired by another’s journey and hungrily flip through our elegant pages, that’s what makes our journey worthwhile. Luxury is different for everyone – and we want to be the catalyst to helping you find yours. My family’s history, values and motivation have been an integral part of the way our magazine is formed; the other vital part is the response and support of you, our readers. Together, we are moving for ward with the landscape of our generation and creating something that we hope secures a foothold in the history of print media. By creating an online platform that will allow you to interact, create and always find new and exciting content, and maintaining our luxurious, elegant printed editions, we hope that, together, we can move into the future of what Beverly Hills lifestyle is all about.

THE RISE OF HERMÉS KELLY by Meaghan Mahoney Dusil
W
hen you think of the most iconic, coveted handbags of all time, the Hermès Birkin likely comes to mind. It’s the bag that countless accessory lovers strive to add to their collection, slowly working their way up the designer price ladder until they reach that holy grail. But over the years, the Birkin has become more widely carried, and that perceived accessibility means some shoppers are looking for that next big get. In the world of handbags, Hermès still reigns supreme. However, so many shoppers have turned to one of the brand’s other bags to fill out their collections: the Hermès Kelly.
roomy. While it was once thought that you’d only carry a Kelly for a more formal occasion, that idea has shifted. With that shift comes scarcity; in Hermès stores, the Kelly has become just as hard to track down as a Birkin, if not harder. The Hermès waiting game is well known, even beyond handbag lovers: you pine for the bag of your dreams and hope that, after building a relationship with a sales associate, in due time you will be offered the bag you’ve been wishing for. But, the typical Hermès lover doesn’t want to be associated with an overplayed bag, and that has helped the Kelly’s recently rising profile.
The Hermès Kelly came to life before the Birkin, but it wasn’t given its name until 1956, when Grace Kelly used the bag to shield her pregnant stomach and a very famous paparazzi photo skyrocketed the bag into stardom. The Kelly was informally known by that name from then on, but it wasn’t until 1977 that Hermès officially renamed it.
The optional shoulder strap allows the structured Kelly to still have a casual touch, as do the various size options, of which there are eight in total, ranging from 15cm to 50cm. Like all Hermès bags, there are ample color and leather options, which can leave you with an entirely one-of-a-kind bag if you’re able to place a special order. Hermès tries to steer clear of trends and fads, so with the Birkin’s cultural ubiquity, a shift toward the Kelly makes sense.
In the world of handbag aficionados, the Kelly’s smaller sizes became a go-to evening bag and was thought to be better suited for more formal events and pairings. If you asked people five years ago which bag they loved more, you’d typically be told the Birkin. Yet, over the past few years, the Kelly has slowly grown in day-bag popularity to rival (and, for many people, overtake) its traditionally more popular sibling, the Birkin.
A Hermès lover wants to be understated yet elegant, classic yet cool, and timeless yet current. The Kelly checks all of those boxes, and you can easily dress it up for an evening out or dress it down for daytime wear. The Kelly’s rise isn’t common knowledge yet, but among the world’s most serious bag collectors, it’s something of an open secret. The Kelly has always been loved, but right now it’s experiencing a surge and, if you ask me, now is the time to add the Hermès Kelly to your collection. You won’t be disappointed.
The Hermès Kelly can be easily distinguished from the Birkin by its single top handle, as opposed to the Birkin’s two. Of course, the shape is also a bit different, and the Kelly is not as

’ve been reviewing cars for over 20 years now, and I remember my first Lexus press car: a 1997 SC300 rendered in Royal Jade pearl, with tan leather seats, a silken V-6 and a delightful manual transmission. Offered from 1992 all the way until 2000, the Lexus SC wasn’t exactly sporty (despite the manual transmission) but it was absolutely gorgeous, and 20 years later, still looks fabulous. Alas, no Lexus since has come close, as far as beauty is concerned.
Inside, the LC’s mix of forms, textures and colors also pushes Lexus to the extreme. The passenger side of the center console rises and curls toward the driver, creating a cockpitlike environment while staying low enough to not make the passenger feel confined. Above that is a touchpad-operated center screen, along with an analog Lexus timepiece and a backlit trim piece, all situated behind a clear panel extending to the passenger door. Stitched leather upholstery covers most surfaces, but the application of suede-like Alcantara on concave surfaces evokes the silk lining of a suit jacket or the inside of a flower petal, especially in one of the contrasting color themes, such as black and red, or blue and orange (yes, blue and orange…with white seats).
Until now. By summer, the sexiest Lexus in a generation will hit U.S. showrooms, and unlike the SC300 (and even the V-8powered SC400), the 2018 LC500 will back up its exotic looks with true athleticism, thanks to a new platform, a powerful V-8, and a mandate from the very top that there are no more boring Lexuses.
Whoever you put back there, make sure they’re fastened in tight. During an early drive program of production-intent LC prototypes on the roads around Sevilla, Spain, as well as on the track at Circuito Monteblanco at the end of 2016, I was able to push this car to its very limit, and realized that not only does the LC-500 accelerate like a rocket (no surprise, given its 471-hp V-8 and quick-shifting 10-speed automatic) it sounds incredible doing so. Cornering grip is outstanding, especially with the optional 21-inch wheels, and steering feel is the best I’ve experienced in any Lexus, ever.
If the LC500 looks like a show car, that’s because, according to Lexus internals, a show car is all the LC was supposed to be. Designed in Newport Beach at Toyota’s CALTY design studio, the LC was previewed back in 2012 at the Detroit Auto Show by the low, flat LF-LC concept car, which floated some of the design themes Lexus was toying with for its next generation products. However, Lexus says that the public reception was so positive—including earning many design awards—that Toyota President Akio Toyoda himself directed the company to build it. Also influencing the decision was a particularly impactful discussion with potential customers at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, during which Toyoda heard that most in attendance considered Lexus products to be rather boring. The sleeping giant was stirred.
A (relatively) fuel-sipping LC500h hybrid will also be available, powered by a 354-hp hybrid powertrain consisting of a 3.5-liter V-6 and two electric motors. The good news is that there is no visual differentiation other than the Lexus “L” badge, which is circumscribed in blue. It wasn’t quite as quick around the track nor as sonorous, but it proved smooth, swift and planted-feeling on the road, which, let’s face it, are where most LCs are destined to remain. Still, the fact that Lexus let us out on the track in a hybrid anything was impressive and testament to this car’s innate sportiness.
And now, the giant is awake. Very, very awake. The LC looks almost exactly like the concept on which it was based, mixing extreme sports car proportions with taut, restrained surfaces. Notably absent is the frenetic busy-ness that characterizes the styling of many current Lexus models like the RX and NX crossovers. The surface cleanliness allows the exquisite details, from the complex intersecting headlamps elements, the twoway mirrors taillamps that appear to recess deep into the car’s body, and the best application yet of the controversial Lexus spindle grille, to shine that much more brightly. The LC’s design appeals to gearheads and glitterati in equal measure. It is pure couture on wheels.
Prices for the LC aren’t set in stone yet, but the LC500 is expected to start around $90,000, with the tech-laden hybrid likely costing a bit more despite its considerably lower power output. Given that, Lexus expects most to be ordered with that sparkling, snarling V-8, and that’s just fine with us. Make ours red. Or yellow. Or brown. Just make it.

ut the big secret behind chess is that it’s not just a game, it’s actually a lifestyle. For those who connect with chess it becomes addictive, something they squeeze into small time gaps where they can find them. Chess is like a good book you can’t wait to get back to and see how the story unfolds. The events of last game you played sit in the back of your mind as you’re walking down the street or eating your dinner. As a result, people who really play incorporate it as a major part of their lives.
isolation. As a culture, we need pastimes to connect us within couples, families, and in our individual lives beyond drinking, eating, social media, and general routine. Rather than binge watching or zoning out, chess is for those who are looking for ways to connect. Deep down we all crave to engage with each other directly, develop our critical thinking skills, and live a more mindful life. Moving pieces is tactile, intimate, and engaging. And there is also something innately enticing about the game. Perhaps this point was illustrated when Kim Kardashian West tweeted:
Hollywood has a rich and glamorous history with the chess lifestyle. Movie stars played between takes on set and then socialized at the original Hollywood Chess Club in the evening. The private club was overflowing with Champagne, piano, and spirited chess matches with members such as Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Charles Boyer, and Josè Ferrer. One match between Bogie and Spencer Tracy became so heated that it culminated in the chess table being flipped in the air and broken in two. The club was the place to be and chess was the thing to do.
Besides its glamorous history, chess players have a reputation for being smart, savvy, and clever. What’s sexier than that? There’s a movement in society towards learning, science, and curiosity -- and the game of chess, referred to as a “sleeping giant”, is undergoing a revitalization. The chess awakening has swept me up as well. I’ve been chess obsessed for years. I study the game every morning for at least an hour, have taken countless lessons, play with grandmasters and hustlers at every opportunity, own sets for every occasion, and am a US Chess Federation Coach and teacher. My wife Rebecca has serious game as well. Chess has really become a lifestyle for us; it’s much more than simply a game we play. It’s one of the ways we connect as a couple. We almost always have a travel set with us, and when we have some free time we incorporate chess into what we’re doing. We play on the beach, on a long train ride up the coast, at a café, and our favorite is bar hopping between chess matches. We’ll grab a drink at one bar, finish a game, and then jump to the next bar for a rematch and another cocktail. If you go to Bar Marmont late afternoon you might see us moving pieces with one hand and a cocktail in the other.
Since the old Hollywood days, chess culture has become splintered. While chess lovers have always been out there, the way our culture spends its free time has made it very challenging to find venues to play the game, and partners to play against. Back in old Hollywood, nighttime entertainment wasn’t as prominent and accessible as it is today. There weren’t countless bars and restaurants to choose from everywhere you went. You often had to create your own venue, your own group, and party. It wasn’t just handed to you. Movie stars hosted late night chess parties at their private houses with music, cocktails and dancing. It was glamorous, sexy, and intimate. Today with table turnover and overly crowded restaurants and bars, it’s hard for chess players to find a space and connect with each other. There are chess clubs these days, and they are certainly a chess friendly space. However, many of them have lost the glamorous past on which they were founded. They serve more as functional spaces rather than as alluring, vibrant venues.
By the way, we play at home too. And Rebecca’s come up with an entire chess culinary menu, determining that there are certain foods that work best with chess. They’re usually a little decadent, require no utensils, and have a great drink pairing. She’s brought out duck rillettes on rye crackers with a glass of Bordeaux, she made a caviar dip once with crème fraiche, mini blinis, and a glass of Champagne, and warm cookies with tea work pretty well too. And we eat it all while playing on Bogart’s actual chess table that he had flipped over. Only it’s no longer cracked in two.
In popular American culture, chess seems to have been replaced by television, social media, video games, and other quick and easy entertainment. All of which can lead to

A TRIBUTE TO TRUE BEVERLY HILLS ROYALTY and the passion and activism behind those iconic violet eyes. by Mark Kurian and Pandora Vanderpump Sabo

ON THE COVER
“I AM DISGUSTED BY THE AMOUNT OF MYTH ABOUT ME THAT IS REGARDED AS FACT.” It’s hard to find a name as evocative as that of Elizabeth Taylor. Whether the words bring to mind her young beauty in National Velvet; her courageous dedication to fighting for people with AIDS; or, in this town, often a personal anecdote of her sipping a martini at one of her favorite Beverly Hills hotspots; it’s undeniable…the name Elizabeth Taylor is as renowned as the twin amethysts gazing out of that stunning oval face. However, although her legendary reputation is indelibly etched on most of our memories, few know exactly who Elizabeth Taylor truly was.
family that we want to expound on, despite them being an incredible testament to her intelligence, passion and drive. It is her courageous activism that we want to honor today – not only does it inspire and astound us, we want to truly do justice to what we believe Elizabeth would want us to feature. Elizabeth Taylor, although always charitable, became a strong yet solitary voice for AIDS activism in the 1980s, after the death of her good friend Rock Hudson. She began her long philanthropic road by co-founding The American Foundation for AIDS Research in 1985 and worked diligently towards ending the disease. In 1991 she launched the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, and continued to raise money for the cause and struggled to end the fear and prejudice that surrounded AIDS/HIV at the time. For her efforts within the LGBTQ community, Elizabeth became an unforgettable gay icon and received several accolades for her work, including the Presidential Citizens Medal. At her death, in 2011, President Bill Clinton said “Elizabeth’s legacy will live on in many people around the world whose lives will be longer and better because of her work and the ongoing efforts of those she inspired.”
Elizabeth Taylor’s life, as the most interesting always are, was peppered by ups and downs – there is no denying that she had more than her fair share of success, scandal, tragedy and loss. Often, reflections on Elizabeth’s life focus on the fabled intricacies of her personal life; the illicit details or the salacious gossip. In fact, in one of her last interviews, Elizabeth said “I am disgusted by the amount of myth about me that is regarded as fact.” To us, however, it is her passionate causes that we find the most fascinating, and what we would like to pay tribute to here. This issue, our 10-year anniversary issue, is extremely important to us. It is a careful reflection on our past, a joyous celebration of our present, and a hopeful contemplation on our future. In choosing Elizabeth Taylor to grace our cover, we are honoring a woman that encompasses the feeling of our 10-year anniversary issue: she is a glorious embodiment of the glamorous history our magazine represents and a shining example of the passionate activism and acceptance that we are striving for. We want to honor Elizabeth Taylor as true Beverly Hills Royalty.
In a rare interview with VANITY FAIR, Elizabeth Taylor’s second-oldest son, Christopher, remarked that what he learned from his mother was “to be expansive with compassion and generosity, to be open-minded and fair. She taught this entirely by example. She was absolutely fearless in standing up, without hesitation, for those she felt were being treated unfairly, whether it was a close friend, a crew member on one of her films, or an entire class of people.” To us, it is this intrepid heroism and the indomitable support of those she championed, that ensures that Elizabeth’s legacy will never be forgotten. Perhaps Richard Burton summed it up best when he said, “you haven’t lived unless you’ve known Elizabeth.”
As such, this is our love letter to a formidable woman who is not only imprinted on our hearts but who has left a legacy that will be forever cherished. Yet it is not her iconic films, her business acumen and empire, or her love towards her

FIRST DESCENTS by Brad Ludden
I
live by one rule: every great experience is built upon three key things — the places in which we find ourselves, the people we’re with, and the challenges that we’re facing. Like many kids who hale from Northwestern Montana, I spent my youth exploring wild spaces, and diving into wild places. Adventure was not just a concept in my family — it was an ethos. It was at the core of who we were then, and has become an undeniable part of who I am now. My adventures started with whitewater kayaking the rivers of Northwestern Montana. The waters that carve turquoise glacial highways through Glacier National Park and the Northernmost Rocky Mountains were my first playgrounds. That quickly led my family and me to the waters of Idaho where I got my first job as a safety kayaker for a raft company. Like so many sport subgroups, river culture has a personality, community, and satisfaction all its own, and I was hooked. I turned pro shortly after that, signing as Nike’s first professional whitewater kayaker. The rivers continued to call, and the call got louder, more remote, and farther away. By my mid-twenties, I had traveled to over 40 countries, kayaking first descents on rivers all over the world. I had competed internationally and in the world championships for freestyle whitewater kayaking. Rivers led me to some of the world’s most remote villages, to unbelievably deep canyons in Africa, to 80-plus foot waterfalls in Norway — to the places only rivers can take us.
64
PROFILE
It was an extraordinary life, but one I quickly learned was nothing if not shared with more people. My adventures had empowered me. My time on the water, with close friends, on and off the map, had imparted an extraordinary level of happiness and exploration. I wanted to spread the love. It was then that my journey shifted. My adventure took on the form of First Descents — a non-profit organization I founded in 2001. The concept was simple: provide young adult cancer fighters and survivors the freedom of rivers that I had come to know so well. Our first program was one week long, and consisted of 15 participants and a handful of volunteers kayaking the friendly waters of central Colorado. In that first week, we all experienced the healing power of adventure. That was 16 years ago. First Descents now provides more than 1200 unique experiences across 100 weeklong and multiday programs nationwide and throughout the world. FD also has thriving local adventure communities in 15 cities and partnerships with renowned medical centers across the country. While growing First Descents didn’t always come without its challenges, it did always overpower them. In January, I had the great honor of being recognized as one of CNN’s Heroes of the Year — an accolade I attribute to the thousands of brave young adults who have shown me the true healing power of adventure. While my days running rivers and pioneering parts unknown will always flow through my veins, it’s the war cry of the First Descents tribe — the strength and commitment of young adults who face much harsher challenges than I ever have — that fuels my journey now. The First Descents community regularly reminds me that life is way too goddamn short to waste, so I still pursue adventure every chance I get. Sometimes on the water, in my kayak; other times in the air, in my plane; sometimes on foot. This year alone, adventurelust has beckoned me to the mountains of Japan and British Columbia, skiing untracked slopes in these quiet corners of the world. I recently sailed through Central America, dancing with dolphins in the Pacific, avoiding drug runners in Panama, and igniting luminescence with midnight swims. I have spent nearly every Spring weekend kayaking with close friends. From those first waters to the ones I chase now, incredible places, extraordinary people, and the promise that adventure wins every time define me — and they always will.

RAMIN KARIMLOO 66

BUILT FOR BROADWAY by Alec Varcas

R
amin Karimloo’s star has quickly risen to one of Broadway’s most desirable leading men. The Great White Way fell in love with him for his Tony-nominated performance as Jean Valjean in the Broadway revival of Les Misérables followed by his current starring run as Gleb Vaganov in the new Broadway production of Anastasia. He is not only known for is heartfelt performances and gorgeous voice, he is also being talked about as one of the best bodies on Broadway. How does he do it? I got a chance to sit down with Ramin and ask him about his recent successes and how he maintains that chiseled physique. Originally from Iran, Ramin has lived in different countries all over the world. His love for performing, however, came after seeing a production of Phantom of the Opera, featuring Colm Wilkinson in Toronto, when Ramin was only 12 years old. This production made Ramin realize that art, in this case theater, can make an audience feel something. From then on, he was hooked and his passion for the arts only grew. At 16, Ramin made a bold statement promising that he would become the youngest person to play the title role in Phantom of the Opera. To many of his classmates’ disbelief, he did just that. He was the youngest person to play the Phantom on the West End; first becoming the standby at age 26 and taking over the role at 27.
67
PROFILE
Ramin came from a small town and didn’t know how difficult performing could be. In his case, ignorance was bliss. Any job he got, he would learn and soak in as much knowledge as possible. Throughout his career he has been able to perform all over the world in prestigious productions such as Phantom of the Opera, originating the role of the Phantom in Love Never Dies, doing the 25th Anniversary performance of Les Misérables, then playing Jean Valjean on the West End, in Canada, and on Broadway. Performing in these huge productions has shown him how palpable the performances are to the audience. Ramin has now returned to New York City to perform in the Broadway production of Anastasia. With the same composers as the animated movie, there are obvious parallels with the film, but the stage production is its own version of the story. This version really dives into the truth of this story about love, adventure, identity, and finding oneself. In Anastasia, Ramin plays Gleb Vaganov, the Chekist, communist, deputy commissioner. Written as the musical’s villain, his character also goes through his own moral struggles. Ramin describes Gleb as a good person at heart, who believes he is doing the right thing, but his actions allow others to perceive him as a man of questionable character. He is a very complicated and conflicted character, who is just trying to make sense of what he believes in. Ramin thrives in playing strong, dominant characters. For powerful roles like Jean Valjean and Gleb Vagnov, he believes there is a correlation between emotional and physical truth, which is why he tries to maintain a certain size and physical being for such roles. In order to do so, Ramin makes health and fitness a huge part of his life. Ramin works out every day in some capacity, listening to his body to decide what areas to focus on. He wants to maintain a good look and strong physique, but his main goals are to be functional, mobile, healthy, and energized for his family. To reach these goals, he likes to do dynamic set training, weight lifting and strength training. He has been working on controlled slow tempos with his weightlifting, applying body weight exercises, using Olympic rings, and he hopes to also incorporate more stretching and yoga into his routine. By mixing his workouts up, not only has he been feeling and noticing a change in his body, but it keeps everything new. In order to achieve his goals and still look good he does watch what he eats, but believes in flexible dieting. The mirror and the scale go hand in hand and he knows what he needs to do to look and feel a certain way. He doesn’t have an appetite
68
PROFILE
for bad food, but doesn’t mind treating himself once in a while when he does have a craving. Ramin also knows that he needs to eat a lot in order to fuel his body for some of the more rigorous workouts he does, so having a high-calorie cheat meal once in a while, doesn’t hurt. Ramin knows that exercising can be hard and it can be difficult to motivate yourself. His advice is to create a realistic, consistent plan and make exercising non-negotiable. Hold yourself accountable. If you can start and finish a short program and show yourself that you have the drive and the focus to do this, you can prove to yourself that you can continue the fitness journey.
SO MY PLAN THIS YEAR IS TO KEEP GROWING BY BEING UNCOMFORTABLE.
Ramin believes in always making yourself uncomfortable to challenge yourself to expand your horizons. He says he has never been more uncomfortable in his life, but he is also extremely happy. He has noticed positive change in his fitness, his personal relationships, his marriage of 17 years, and his career. To make change you have to be uncomfortable, and if you are challenged then you will grow, “So my plan this year is to keep growing by being uncomfortable.”

RENEWED PROMISES by Trista and Ryan Sutter
HE SAID
I
suppose there are occasions when the term renewal is appropriate. Perhaps there are times when we become so lost in ourselves that it’s absolutely necessary to start over anew. For me, and maybe Trista too, our ceremony was less about renewing our vows than it was about realizing them.
There are few words more carefully crafted than wedding vows. Certainly there are templates and the standard “’til death do us part” inclusions, but in between those stalwarts sits a pure white canvas limitlessly stretching to the stars. Content is free, without consequence and void of any real context. Arising from a place of creativity, allure and passion, our vows are free to paint a picture covered in the unadulterated hopes and romantic ideals of their love infused artists. It’s beautiful and magic and quickly consumed by a life in which art is, unfortunately, not fantasy. Almost immediately after uttering our vows, we begin to forget them. Many of us cannot recite the sacred words of our nuptials a mere week post wedding bliss. Like the cake, our vows are ceremonious. They are pretty and delicious. We eat them up and delight in their sweetness but their impression is short lived, soon replaced by a few residual crumbs and that hard frosting that was never meant to be eaten anyway. Wedding vows are like a seed. Once planted, they immediately begin to transform and grow, taking on and reflecting the effect of the care they receive and the environment in which they reside. Vows aren’t meant to stay vows any more than a seed is meant to stay a seed. The magic of wedding vows is in their potential, not their persistence. They aren’t intended to be a static symbol but, like the love they represent, are a dynamic depiction of what might be possible. As Trista and I repeated our vows to each other some 10 years after their initial creation, we were not renewing them. We were not replanting a seed. We were observing the realization of the tree our original seed had become. We celebrated each branch as a symbol of the life we’ve lived, loved and shared. Our words, though the same, were no longer empty dreams. They had blossomed and grown to reveal a relationship that truly understood what it means to make a promise – what it means to be married.

SHE SAID
O
Joined by most of our original wedding party, our immediate family, and our closest friends in the Vail Valley, we enjoyed an intimate ceremony at Saddleridge, the epitome of rustic elegance. Designed by Ralph Lauren, the space is a luxurious tribute to the Old West, and was the perfect setting to adorn with the romance of 4 foot-tall candlesticks, black and white versions of our favorite photos, mini crystal chandeliers, and varied hues of white and pink roses and peonies. Mark Held, of Mark’s Garden surprised me with the most gorgeous bouquet of peonies for my walk down the aisle in 2003, so I thought it was apropos to include them, but this time around, let’s just say the pink accents were a bit more subtle.
n December 3, 2003, over 26 million people tuned in to watch me marry Ryan Sutter, a man I fell in love with as cameras followed our (almost) every move on the first season of The Bachelorette. We had only known each other for six short weeks, but that was more than enough time to know that he made me feel safe, loved and happy. Besides, when you know, you know, and I knew. Flash forward 10 years, I was still feeling those fluttering butterflies in my stomach every day. It was 2013 and we were living our fairy tale life in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, now the very proud parents of two tiny humans created out of our love, Max and Blakesley. As opposed to the lavish world in which we started our relationship, our every day life had turned from private jets and fantasy suites to paper airplanes and playgrounds. After 10 years of marriage, life was about our little family of four and it was busy and beautiful. We also thought it was the perfect time to celebrate a major milestone: a decade of commitment.
Looking into each other’s eyes, we promised to take each other (again) as husband and wife. We promised to treasure our friendship and love each other today, tomorrow, and forever. We promised to trust and honor each other, to laugh and cry together and share our lives openly and honestly. What may come, we would always be there. We promised to be true in good days and in bad, in sickness and in health and gave our trust, devotion, tenderness, and love. We stated these words: “As I give you my hand to hold, so I give you my life to keep.”
Coming from the unconventional introduction of a reality show, coined with the whirlwind of a televised wedding and all of the accompanied pressure of spotlights and outside doubt, we were proud of our story. We knew that 10 years was just a drop in the matrimonial buckets of those like his parents who would celebrate 45 years together that year, and my grandparents who, in 2013, had lived a lifetime of 69 years as a married couple. We looked up to their relationships and hoped to follow in their exceptional footsteps. They taught us that no matter how bad the bad times were, the good times would always be better, as long as we had each other to have and to hold. Over the years we learned a few lessons ourselves. One of those lessons being that words of affirmation played an important role in maintaining our connection, in communicating our feelings, and in assuring the other that even through our struggles, our love would see us through. So, we decided to break out our very best words and celebrate our accomplishment thus far by renewing our vows, this time including our children and honoring the life we had created together in Colorado. And what better way to do that than in Beaver Creek, a resort that we are lucky enough to practically call home!
The words were powerful back in 2003, but with a decade of insight and deeply developed love, they meant even more as we stated them for the second time. To make the evening even more special, we were joined by Max and Blakesley (four and six at the time, respectively), for my favorite part of the night. Our Pastor, Tommy Schneider asked: “Will the four of you, the Sutter family, agree to be respectful to each other. To always embrace a grateful heart together. To be those that laugh a lot together and have all kinds of adventures together. Will you promise to delight and laugh in this beautiful world that you’ve been given and these amazing parents that you’ve been given. Will you delight in that love together as a family? If so, together you’ll say, ‘We will.’” And we did. Almost four years have passed since that meaningful day in Beaver Creek. I’ll never forget it. Even though we may get lost in the hustle and bustle of life, I am happily reminded of those precious promises we made whether looking at our mantle and photos we took that day, or admiring my ring finger and the Neil Lane stunner my husband gifted me before the ceremony. That’s the beauty of our vow renewal. It gave us everyday reminders to cherish each day as husband and wife and remain steadfast in our commitment to each other. And with a grateful heart, I intend to do just that.

or almost 20 years, I have been fortunate enough to work in a business that I love. A career that has been laced with some exciting highs and some devastating lows. But I truly believe that it’s those painful moments, those Earth shattering lows that makes the highs that much sweeter… AND MOST OF ALL, learning life’s valuable lessons along the way. Right? RIGHT!! Lessons. That’s what this glorious life is all about. Living. Learning. Listening. Learning some more. Lessons. Back to living. And through it all, LOVING. I’ve also learned that life is so precious, delicate and most of all, fleeting… Crazy but so true. Growing up, I used to hear “old people” say such “things” and then in a blink of an eye, to some, I’m now officially one of those “old” people. As a lifestyle expert on TV, I’ve had the extreme opportunity of interviewing some of Hollywood’s hottest stars plus, a celebrated assortment of Oscar winners such as Meryl, Sandy, George, Julianne and Kathy, to name a few. Come on! Some of lifes greatest moments spent with legends. #Grateful

It’s a career that I didn’t choose, but one that God chose for me. Every day, on this glorious journey, I have met some of the most amazing people that have truly touched my heart in a profound way. I’m sure that one would assume that I’m talking about those involved in the Entertainment Industry. On the contrary, these unique individuals are what I call life’s “unsung angels!” It’s those hard working, dedicated, motivated individuals that keep our world moving. They’re the glue that keeps our world together and, on a daily basis, they suit up, show up, do their job and make our lives just a little better. and brought to a super shine that it almost gives a mirrorlike quality that I think is so beautiful.
Susan: I am so excited for you that your latest book Change Your Home, Change Your Life with Color just reached the number 10 spot on the New York Times’ Bestseller List. Tell us how this feels?
Susan: Venetian plaster dates back over a thousand years yet the way you had it applied and colored is absolutely modern in every sense of the word. It truly glows in the most exquisite way.
Moll: It’s kind of that nod that you always hope for. To me as an author, it being on the New York Times Bestseller List is like getting a Grammy if you write a song, or an Academy Award if you do a great performance. It is an absolute dream come true and I feel so blessed!
Moll: That’s how my brain goes from my years in television. I just thought I’m going to come up with some quick little things for people to remember.
Susan: Moving on to the penthouse, which, by the way is absolutely stunning! It is 8,400 square feet of magic. I can’t even stop gushing about it. How did you apply your color theories to your own home? Moll: People often ask me “What color is best for me?” And I have to tell them, “Well, that’s not how it works.” You have to do the journey and you have do the work and figure out what you love, what’s your happy color that speaks to you. Don’t get me wrong, I built a career on telling people what they needed to have (laughs), but my book really tries to take the fear out of finding out what your color story is and how to apply it to your home. With the penthouse, my first step was to bring in our art, which is my favorite thing to do.
MOLL’S FEARLESS FIVE Start Small and Paint A Wall – Not The Whole Room Consider painting an accent wall at the end of your hall, your family room, or entry foyer. Paint is an easy way to experiment with color and enliven your space.
Susan: Because the art is such an important part of the design. Not that you designed around the art, but the art collection is just astonishing. Moll:
Let’s shift to your new book…one of the many insightful and practical parts of your latest book are “Moll’s Fearless Five.” Can you share with us the highlights?
If You Can Wear It and Feel Fab In It, Then You Can Live With That Color It’s all about hue! Start with a color you love to wear and mix your hues. Your favorite wearable color comes in many tones, tints and shades and your closet will often reveal what you are attracted to. Explore bringing you favorite fashion color to your space.
Oh thank you. You have to love your art, especially if it’s an investment. And when you start with an empty box, the art makes the space immediately come alive.
Susan: What I love about your home is the flow. I feel your emotions as well having a distinct personal reaction in each room as you move through the space.
Be Smart Think Art
Moll: Thank you for noticing. It’s very open and flow is very important to me. I have to have this balance and this feeling of when I look one direction I want it to all to work together. When I look the other direction it’s a whole different vibe but it all complements. Even if it’s loud pops of color, I like it to work together and to feel aesthetically correct for us. And that’s all that matters.
A Pop of Color Goes A Long Way
Be inspired by your favorite piece of art. Art is a great way to personalize your space and bring color into a room. You will be amazed at the impact a large-scale painting full of color can bring to your home.
Make a bold statement with colorful accents. Accessorize! It is a great way to infuse color into your space with minimal risk. Use drapes, pillows, throws, and rugs to change your space. Even colorful books in a tray can really change the vibe of a room.
Susan: The Venetian plaster you have throughout the penthouse is amazing. It was done in such a subtle way you just get a hint of it at first glance but it adds depth to each room. Moll:
Flower Power Your Way To A Bouquet That Makes Your Heart Sing
The thing about our plaster that is so different is that there’s so much movement in the way we had it applied. It really layers the space with such a subtle grace and then adding colors to the plaster allows each wall to speak with a different voice but still harmonize together. Each wall is hand done
Take home a bouquet and see how flowers arouse your senses. The idea is to try a new color of flowers every week until you connect to the color for you and your home that breathes new life into your space.

YOU HAVE TO LOVE YOUR ART, ESPECIALLY IF IT’S AN INVESTMENT. Susan: Your personal journey is so inspirational from Model to Actress to Interior Designer, and now, of course, life and lifestyle expert in print and on television. I think that’s really what sets you apart as a role model. Can you talk a little about that journey? Moll: Sure. It’s interesting; I wish I had known, back when I was a small child or a teen, or a young woman even, all that I know today. I used to think that that your success in life was measured only by the good stuff (laughs). I felt like not only did other people judge me by my mistakes, but more importantly I judged myself. But I cared way too much about what other people thought. And that can really be debilitating and hold you back. Susan: Yes, I think women do that quite a bit. Moll:
It’s a shame because it’s through the journey, it’s through the folly, and it’s through the painful alone time that we glow. And, I think today it’s so important having great girlfriends like you, Brooke (Burke-Charvet), and Tracy (McMillian) in my life. It’s so empowering because we all are happy for each other, we each come from a place of support and happiness. And we don’t have the jealousy in our body; we don’t even have the energy to be that kind of person. You know?
Susan: No, it takes so much negative energy. It just takes away from your purpose.
If there were one thing to take away from your book, what would you say?
Moll: To adapt to the thinking that you are the most important person that will ever step foot into your home. And it’s a reflection of you and your family and, that we need to create our home to be comfortable and loving and nurturing. Susan: I love that. Even those that have the luxury of using talented Interior Designers need to understand that they are there to tell your story not theirs. Too often it is the other way around. Moll thanks so much for your time. Moll: Charlie and I are spending this summer in Malibu again and can’t wait share the Southern California sunshine with family and friends!

s Denver’s bustling Downtown scene continues to rise, a new face of Colorado living is emerging. In an ever growing landscape of new arts, entertainment, culture, business opportunities, a rare opportunity is reawaken: the penthouse atop the Four Seasons Private Residences Denver. Denver’s Grand Penthouse is a royal sanctuary, perched high above one of the country’s fastest growing urban centers. Perhaps considered Colorado’s version of Versailles, where the view of elaborate gardens is replaced by the twinkling lights of the city skyline and the regal snowcapped peaks of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Rest assured, this one-of-a-kind residence is tailor-made for those seeking the best. With nearly 7,000 square feet spanning the top two floors of the city’s tallest residential tower, the double grand master suites with dual balconies, the two-story wall of windows with sunrise-to-sunset views, and the elegant curved glass staircase leading to the 45th floor lofted entertaining area, create an environment suited for a King.

Consistent with the Four Seasons embodiment of intuitive luxury, this penthouse exceeds all expectations. The unbeatable views, gracious floor plan, and luxurious appointments throughout are only the beginning of what is an utterly incomparable home and an opportunity available only once in a lifetime.
and Bach fixtures, and commercial grade appliances such as Wolfe, Miele and SubZero, it is exactly what you think it should be. According to Mr. Kniss, The Grand Penthouse is the largest, highest and most prestigious condominium in the state of Colorado and beyond – and will be unrivaled for a very long time to come. However, Kniss is quick to point out that the true value in owning a property like this is that there will never be another like it. It is now and will always be the best condominium in Denver. Even if someone wanted to replicate it, they would not find a location that rivals this one, with 270 degrees of uninterrupted views, on top of the most luxurious hotel company in the world. It simply is not possible to recreate such a property in Denver – and for those who want the best, this is it.
So what is it like to live in the Grand Penthouse at the Four Seasons Private Residences? The answer is, quite simply, whatever you want it to be - and more. “Living at the Four Seasons Private Residences Denver means that you have access to a support system that is unmatched anywhere else in Denver.” says Stan Kniss of Slate Real Estate Advisors, the exclusive listing agency for the penthouse “I am confident that whomever purchases the Grand Penthouse already owns a home with exceptional finishes and appointments.” With a smile, he adds “what they don’t have is the Four Seasons. There are 300 highly trained individuals on staff who will know exactly who you are – what you like and what you dislike. You own the Grand Penthouse - and they will make sure that you’re guaranteed the Four Seasons’ experience every day that you live here.”
Kniss adds “We know that the listing price is a big number for Denver. But like many other things in life, this is what it costs to own the best. And when compared to the best condominiums in other major cities, this is a bargain.” The prestige of living on top, as Rocky Mountain royalty, only found at Denver’s Grand Penthouse, is extremely rare. Imagine a home where the staff becomes an added support system and resource for all of your needs and desires, to create a truly unparalleled royal experience. An opportunity like this only occurs once in a lifetime.
Inside the Grand Penthouse, world-class architect John Carney of Carney, Logan and Burke Architects (http://clbarchitects. com) embraces a philosophical belief that beauty is found in simplicity, authenticity, and natural materials that are rich in spirit. lush oasis nestled cozily into the rolling rises of Beverly Hills, Villa Rosa is a sumptuous haven tucked away from the chaotic energy of Los Angeles. Designed and occupied by our Editor-In-Chief Lisa Vanderpump, from the moment you enter Villa Rosa, you know this house is special. The walk to the colossal front door, ensconced as it is by wistful willows, takes you over a delicate bridge overlooking tranquil swans and a softly bubbling waterfall. The heavy plated glass doors lead you into a foyer that hints at the home you are about to explore. The romantic lobby boasts vintage mirrors and adorned chandeliers set atop car ved stone bases; a flawless display of rustic opulence to acclimate you from the fertile front entrance to the elegant interior. Just beyond the doors, the focal room of the house effortlessly ties the plush rusticity of outside into the contemporary feel of the architectural design. The sweeping vista of the infinity pool spilling into the green countryside is unimpeded by the walls; instead it is highlighted by floor to ceiling windows that traverse two floors. The flood of light, against the bright white and neutral décor, underscores the sheer immensity of the architecture and the stunning valley it inhabits. The upstairs master suite that is ultimately the pièce de resistance of Villa Rosa, is similarly unhampered by the structure of the house. The spectacular landscape acts as a visual backdrop for this blush and cream haven. It’s the essence of ultra-luxury from the instant your foot touches the decadent white carpet.

REAL ESTATE
Villa Rosa’s décor seamlessly marries the starkly elegant milieu of a structurally contemporary home – clean lines, clear glass, graphic edges – with the bucolic romanticism of the surrounding Beverly Hills countryside. The home allows the dramatic natural canvas of the valley to be a pivotal point of every room – the vibrant and lush greenery provides most of the color, and the windows allow the scenery to feel like part of the décor. Complemented by enormous displays of fragrant fresh flowers, the interior design mimics this marriage of modern pastoral charm. Stylish touches, such as glass bar carts and silver chrome edges tie perfectly in with more rustic elements of stone planters and velvet chairs. The feel of the home is at once one of opulent romance and cozy comfort. However, Villa Rosa is proof that the love is always in the details. From your first steps inside, it’s very clear that this is not just a house, but a home. The care taken to stitch unique tassels onto one-of-a-kind upholstered chairs, the white pearls that adorn the edges of custom pillows, the roses in bud vases on almost every surface; it’s the little touches that embody the love and care that Lisa has put into creating this oasis for her and her family.

or discerning travelers, the thought of leaving the comfort of their own personal palaces can be exciting and exhausting. Home is where we immerse ourselves in daily rituals and conveniences. Without these personal luxuries, one is left to wonder, “is traveling always worth it?” Considering the resources of time and money spent, it’s realistic to want traveling to be equal to, or better than being at home. For many of us that is setting the bar quite high. Resonance, a strategy and development consultancy supports this in their 2016 Future of Luxury Travel report where they explain that wealthy U.S. travelers are one of the most lucrative and influential travel market segments in the world. Their needs are reshaping the world of high end travel — for the better. Luxury tends to be among the most overused words when it comes to appealing to travelers. What does “luxury” mean? Unfortunately, that is not an easy answer because luxury means something different to everyone, especially elite travelers. Today’s travelers want to indulge in a destination by seeking more than five stars, high thread counts and marble surfaces. What they are seeking is far more coveted and rare. It is at the heart of what true luxury is, an emotional connection or a transformative experience. For experiences to be considered transformative they actually have to change you. But for this highly evolved class of traveler, who has seen and done nearly everything, does transformation only arrive from the most over-the-top experiences and the purest of emotions? If this sounds like you, look for these words next time you travel.

PERSONALIZATON
ACCESS
Each hotel does it a little differently. At The Beverly Hills Hotel the undeniably warm staff creates a welcoming environment, establishing itself as the personal living room to the community. L’Horizon in Palm Springs creates guest name plates for the door to each of its bungalows, while St. Regis Punta Mita has a small, but not unnoticed, touch at its fresh coconut bar, Coco Loco. While St Regis prides itself on its proprietary recipes, guests are invited to collaborate with the mixologists for a completely personalized drink. If the creation is deemed worthy, it appears on the menu for an entire week along with the name you select. They also offer a Catch of the Day Ritual, which partners with a local fishing boat on property allowing guests to hand select their dinner from the comfort of the resort’s beach.
The Auberege du Soleil in Napa Valley has a similar mindset, which is likely why they see so many repeat guests. A key element of the Auberge experience lies in their ability to really opens doors for guests thanks to long standing relationships with restaurants and wineries. The access Auberge du Soleil provides to Napa Valley’s most sought after experiences is not something that happened over night. It comes from being hospitality leader in Napa for over 30 years, as well as the longevity of some of its staff who have put more than two decades into the property. That’s not something commonly seen in the hospitality industry. Investing in a stay at well established properties with seasoned staff is worthwhile, when guests want to get the most out of a destination. Elite travelers who have everything at their fingertips at home, crave the same ease while away.
Appealing to guest’s emotions may be an effective strategy for creating a luxury experience, but how do hotels provide something as intangible as a feeling? Personalization is vital to that mission, which is why leaders in hotel luxury have doubled down with an enhanced effort to offer personally tailored services, experiences and touches.
An undeniable component for creating once in a lifetime moments is access. Access in the case of Shermaine at Four Seasons Wailea stems from being a native of Maui and having over 14 years experience at Four Season Wailea. It really takes a lifetime to develop the type of access she affords guests and uses to produce unrivaled experiences on the island.
EXPERIENCE
LOCALE
The Resonance travel report also found that of the wealthiest 1% of travelers, almost 70% of them sought out once in a lifetime experiences while traveling. Why? Because unique experiences and how they make travelers feel become unforgettable moments. The Four Seasons Wailea takes that desire to new heights with its branded Unforgettable Experiences series you can only find at the Four Season Wailea.
A sense of locale also plays a role in distinguishing a stay from an experience. In the simplest of terms it can take into account a hotel’s physical location to the area. In the case of Auberge du Soleil, its prized mid Valley location provides multiple access points offering flexibility and ease of travel. It also has nearby sister properties Calistoga Ranch and Solage Calistoga, each offering its own unique experiences and purpose.
Unforgettable Experiences grew out of the boundless imagination and personal contacts of Shermaine Rodrigues, Guest Experience Manager and Personal Assistant to the ocean front suites at Four Seasons Wailea. Sample experiences range from trekking across off-the-grid terrain to capture images of Maui’s legendary King’s Highway with a professional photographer; a bean-to-cup Kona coffee tour at a stunning private estate that included an aerial tour of the fiery display of Kilauea Volcano on the way home to Maui; an under-the-stars private evening at the Resort’s award-winning Serenity Pool featuring a multi-course dinner and exclusive after-hours access to the coveted pool. The team offers everything from idea starters to fully customized experiences and has even planned elaborate marriage proposals. With a commitment to personally know the guests and understand their needs, the possibilities are endless.
Las Ventanas al Paraiso, a Rosewood resort pays tribute to locale through tailored experiences. Every six months Rosewood curates a fresh batch of locally inspired experiences, unique to each of its properties. At Las Ventanas that includes a “Sleeping Under the Stars” experience, launching this summer. NASA considers Los Cabos to be one of the best locations in the world to observe the night sky. The Sleeping under the Stars experience provides guests with a magical evening from the comfort of an outdoor bed set on the guests’ private oceanfront or rooftop terrace. For Summer 2017, the resort is enhancing the experience with flower displays, a bottle of Tequila Clase Azul Special Edition and an array of sweet and savory bites — not to mention every room is equipped with a telescope. Imagine the intimacy of a night surrounded by the elements, drifting to sleep beneath the stars and awakened by a magical sunrise. They use locale to create emotional value.

SERVICE
White glove service is expected as often as it can be taken for granted. A property that is really catering to its guest offers an enhanced level of service where others may drop the ball. The Beverly Hills Hotel strikes the perfect balance of service without pretense. At St. Regis Punta Mita that means their branded butler service is there to assist with even the tiniest tasks like charging your phone when you are stuck on the beach. No request is too big or small. At the 1 Hotel South Beach, guests who splurge for a suite in the Retreat Collection get a personal Guru to assist them during their stay. The Auberge du Soleil and Four Season Wailea make a tremendous effort in advance of each guest’s arrival to learn as much about his or her preferences as possible.
WELLNESS
Specialized lifestyles, clean diets, and sustainability are components of wellness that many incorporate into their lives to varying degrees. Wellness encompasses comfort, happiness and wellbeing. Travelers today seek the comfort of continuity. Being on vacation is no longer a reason to take a break from lifestyle. The Beverly Hills Hotel offers custom, wellness kits for yoga denizens to use and a weekly yoga class. While most five star properties will cater to your every need, there is a significant difference when you stay at a property whose mission is aligned with yours, and no explanation is necessary. No one does this better than the 1 Hotel South Beach. The hotel features green, living art in public areas. Spacious suites, which average 700 square feet, boast natural touches like hemp filled mattresses, organic sheets and are furnished with materials that are regional, reclaimed or repurposed whenever possible. While this can all start to sound a little crunchy, the suites are minimal chic and never sacrifice design or comfort. All rooms feature Triple Clear Water filters at every tap, sink and shower as well as low-flow plumbing to conserve water. 1 Hotel is as simultaneously sustainable as it is sophisticated. There are several plant based dining options on property like plnthouse and Nativ Made along with a series of farm to table options from Tom Colicchio.

JAIPUR by Jordan Carlyle
Rambagh Palace provides service befitting royalty in an ornate palace, combined with warm hospitality that pushes it to the top of its class. The property itself enjoys a prime location in Jaipur, a few minutes ride away from the Pink City. The grounds have been maintained splendidly and the palace itself is in top notch condition. It offers a quiet, secure sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of Jaipur. In fact, one could even remain on the property for days as it offers a gym, spa, two excellent swimming pools, three restaurants, and one polo bar. Originally built in 1835, Rambagh Palace has stepped gracefully through many royal transitions—from the home of the queen’s favorite handmaiden, to royal guesthouse and hunting lodge, and later as the residence of the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II and his queen, Maharani Gayatri Devi. It has also has played gracious host to several illustrious guests, including Lord Louis Mountbatten, Prince Charles and Jacqueline Kennedy. You too, can experience the finest traditions of Rajput hospitality. Today, this jewel in the Taj’s crown offers 78 stunningly restored grand luxury rooms and suites, which were once the chambers of the former Maharaja.

Word has begun to spread through the elite that when you’re at the Rambagh Palace, you experience the lives of the past kings and queens. All of these rumors have proven to be true. The palace staff is impeccably attired, fully attentive, and not at all intrusive. As you enter the palace, you are escorted through the grand entrance that has been showered with rose petals. The staff takes you on a tour of the palace, which is not only very interesting and informative, but ends with a glass of champagne. One surprising little treat happens upon arrival to your room post-tour, to find a floral arrangement made of rose and jasmine petals, a drawn rose petal bath, and the impossibly soft robes, towels, and bed made ready for you. The staff really make sure you get the full royal treatment. Sipping your drink and taking in the breathtaking architectural and historical culture allows you to relax, be yourself and feel at home.
The palace is a serene, floral scented masterpiece with elegant decorative arts, beautiful gardens, spa, pool, comfortable luxurious rooms, delicious assortments of foods, Indian entertainment, and so much more. The first building on the site was a garden house, built in 1835. In 1887, it was converted into a modest royal hunting lodge, which may not make sense, seeing as the palace is no longer in the midst of a thick, dense forest, like it was 130 years ago. By the early 20th century, it was expanded into a palace, to the designs of Sir Swinton Jacob. Maharajah Sawai Man Singh II made Rambagh his principal residence and added a number of royal suites in 1931. Since the end of his reign, the palace has managed to retain its elegant splendor, extravagantly decorated with hand-carved marble latticework, sandstone balustrades, cupolas and ‘chattris’, surrounded by elaborate Mughal Gardens.

The luxury accommodations in the palace include the Royal Suite, the Grand Royal Suite, and the Grand Presidential Suite. The Royal Suite is lavishly decorated with a love seat and coffee table that is perfect for revisiting the day of touring, a carved wooden desk, and lamps surrounding the room that provide a nice warm glow to give you the feeling of tranquility and relaxation. The Grand Royal Suite is one step up, featuring large beds with elaborate headboards, plush couches, and a marble bathroom that is reminiscent of something you would see in a fairytale. Finally, the Grand Presidential Suite must be seen to be fully appreciated. The oversized bed rests in the center of the room, situated underneath the most beautiful four-pieced tapestry suspended from a domed ceiling that has been ornately painted. The crown moldings along the ceiling are an extra touch of luxury that make the Presidential Suite the real top-notch accommodation in the spectacular palace.
The walls are built with floor to ceiling windows, adorned with impossibly extravagant drapery that not only provides shelter from the sun, but also elevates the experience from living like a Prince, to living like a King. Symmetrical designing, huge verandahs and pleasant front lawns decorated with beautiful peacocks are all the highlights of the architecture of Rambagh Palace, that covers over 47 acres of lush land. Another feature of the palace that was thankfully preserved is the privilege of eating like royalty. Within this most glorious of palaces showcasing the best of the Rajasthan royal heritage, you are lucky enough to experience the absolute best fine-dining restaurants in Jaipur. The Verandah is a wonderful place to enjoy breakfast and tea, or if it’s not too hot out, on the lawn overlooking the gardens and fountain in the distance. The ambiance is

If you are looking for a more relaxing venue, then the perfect place to unwind after a long day of exploring the beautiful grounds is within the sophisticated charm of the Polo Bar, which sports trophies and memorabilia of the Jaipur polo team. The palace also offers a mixture of Italian and Mediterranean cuisine at their restaurant Steam, an old train located outside of the main building that is quite an attraction in itself. On top of that, nobody should miss a meal at Suvarna Mahal; what used to be the formal ballroom of the Palace. It is a majestically beautiful 18th-century French styled room, adorned with enormous crystal chandeliers, offering Indian cuisine from several regions. The tables are beautifully set and one

here’s no question that Beverly Hills has had its fair share of power eating. From the epic nights the Rat Pack spent sipping dirty martinis at La Dolce Vita, to the diamond drenched toasts Elizabeth Taylor made at Chasen’s; Beverly Hills has always been a place for the epicurean elite to congregate and feast. The vintage menus that peppered Beverly Hills’ eateries-of-old featured decadent classics that will neither be forgotten nor disparaged – it’s their consistent appeal that has made them tried and true favorites amongst starlets, politicians and locals alike. From the famous side-eye delivered by Sophia Loren to Jayne Mansfield over Caviar Canapés & Crab Cocktail at Romanoff’s in 1957, to the Prosciutto Melon offered to Marilyn Monroe’s table while she hid away at Chasen’s, or the fresh fruit-infused Mai Tais served to a gorilla-costume-clad Candice Bergen at Trader Vic’s; the restaurants were often the focus of salacious gossip and decadent food. However, although reminiscing over the culinary institutions resigned to memory is nostalgic, quite a few of the Beverly Hills classics are still around now. The Vesper Martinis at La Dolce Vita, the colorful McCarthy Salad at the Beverly Hills Hotel, and Spago’s famed Smoked Salmon Caviar Pizza and tiny Spicy Tuna Sesame Cones are nibbled on to this very day. Here are some recipes for modern classics inspired by the Beverly Hills’ greats. They’re not only fresh, contemporary and easy to make – they’re the perfect way to embrace the flavors of old without feeling dated. Enjoy!

Pitcher it! When making a cocktail, keep it in pitchers, we don’t have time to make individual drinks! I love pitcher cocktails as it keeps the mood casual and fun. My Strawberry Mint Aperol Spirtz is perfect for this.
Potluck it! Sometimes what I like to cut back on a crazy day of cooking is to ask some of my friends to bring their favorite dish. Someone ALWAYS has a dish they are proud of so be clever and keep this little tip up your sleeve if needed.
If you have a favorite Dessert from a bakery there is nothing wrong with incorporating this into your menu. Sometimes we don’t have the time to do EVERYTHING!
Prep the night before. Go through your recipes and prep as much as you can. I definitely recommend doing all of the grocery shopping a day or two before.
Choose simple recipes and Jeuge them up a bit! Check out my cookbook The Quick Six Fix for recipes for your next barbeque. And don’t worry, you don’t have to cook everything on the actual barbecue, use that oven in your home too!
Clean up! I always hire someone to come over and help clean up. This is something that everyone overlooks. this is more a reminder than a tip my friends.

DANAKIL DREAM by Ryan Young
“L
ive! Live the wonderful life that is in you! Let nothing be lost upon you. Be always searching for new sensations. Be afraid of nothing,” says Lord Henry in Oscar Wilde’s masterpiece The Picture of Dorian Gray. Easier said than done, Mr. Wilde. We’re living in 2017’s United States of America. There is plenty to be afraid of. We can just keep our heads above water in this rapidly changing world, or we can look at the possibilities. No doubt there’s plenty to fight, but amid resistance, in the face of what we’re up against, comes the opportunity to create who and what it is we want to be, both as a collective society and as individuals. A few years ago, I found myself at a precipice. I could sense the daily, tiny cuts of self-inflected, fatal repetitiveness and I knew something had to change. I’ve been fortunate to make a living in front of the camera, but I dreamt of turning that camera onto the world. I allowed myself to wonder again, and to imagine what a life led differently might look like. It’s crazy how life works. A certain film premiered around this same time. A film asking each of us to buy a ticket, to explore, to venture out into the world. “Be a scientist of your own spiritual experience. You’re not here as a tourist or a journalist; you’re here as a seeker. So explore it,” writes Elizabeth Gilbert, Author of the novel Eat, Pray, Love. in the film adaptation, and I have little in common. But in the darkness of the theater, with a tear or two rolling down my cheek, I was reminded of the fire simmering deep inside of me. The fire that years prior led me across the country in pursuit of grand dreams. Where had this zest gone? More importantly, how could I reclaim it?
More than a year ago, I found myself in a cozy London hotel room. The floor to ceiling windows framed a typical English, October evening. Classic street lamps illuminated a gentle fog. Pedestrians bustled in their overcoats. The glow of the West End theatres’ marquees. The perfect evening for a new idea to brew.
There’s this belief that to change your life, you must change your physical activity. The simple act of moving our bodies changes our state of mind. With the decision to commit to physical activity, change then becomes enviable. I took up running and in doing so, I found a new perspective to interact, engage, and view the world. I became curious again. Curious about how far and how fast I could go. Curious about what I could do when my body, mind, and spirit work in unison. And curious about how others are passionately living out their lives. This curiosity has led me to some truly unique places.
Staring at me from the coffee table was a travel magazine. I began thumbing through the pages and something happened: my heart sunk at images of a camel caravan crossing a desert. I turn the page again and there were sulphur springs boiling onto the ground surface that resembled that of an alien. Then a picture of lava flowing from Erta Ale into the world’s longest-existing lava lake. This was a feature story on the Danakil Desert in Eastern Ethiopia and it held me hostage. The temperatures reach 122ºF and ground level is 150 feet below sea level. In this desert, three giant tectonic plates meet but are slowly drifting apart. And here the indigenous Afar people mine salt, the oldest currency in the world. Reading the story, I was transported back to that golden time as a child, when awe and adventure outshines any lingering dangers.
On the last day of a 10-day run across the state of California, I stopped to snap a photo of a mileage sign directing me to Parker, Arizona my finish line. Isolated except for the occasional passing freight truck, suddenly a white Jeep Cherokee pulled over and out stepped a woman in her mid60s. She too snapped a picture of the road sign, then turned to me and questioned, “What on earth are you doing out here? You’re having too much fun!” I explained to Eleanor, from Saskatchewan, how some friends and I left Huntington Beach days prior and were running 300 miles across the state. Unexpectedly, Eleanor began telling us her story. Her husband of decades recently had passed away. In her grief, she packed her car and began to explore North America, seeking out towns named “Parker,” which is her grandson’s name.
A land unlike any other I have ever seen before. That curiosity bug kicks in… I knew one day soon, I would cross the desert on foot. I knew I had to. In the spirit of creating life, rather than passively accepting what comes my way, I’m stepping up to meet this challenge. In doing so, I am excited about the like-minded souls I’ll meet along the way, but even more interested in the ones that may not look, act, or come from backgrounds like mine. Knowing we are more connected than divided, differences only add flavor.
As we parted ways, Eleanor reached into her pocket and left me with a small Canadian flag pin. In that moment, I realized there’s no real destination for either of us. Two strangers on the shoulder of a two-lane highway in the middle of the California desert, both on a search for what else is out there.
To choose to live life fully, full of curiosity, and connected to our world and neighbors, near or far, this is the ultimate act of rebellion in our country today. It also feels like the right thing to do.
In my experience, adventure leads to the desire for more. As we open ourselves up to new ideas, to uncertainty, to learning from others, new questions arise. Life seems more complete, yet simultaneously, I’m aware there is so much more to do, see, and experience.
Tips to begin an adventure: 1. Give yourself permission to dream once again. Ask, “what if?” 2. Write down goals and what it is you want to achieve.
SO… WHO WANTS TO COME TO ETHIOPIA?
3. Be open. In the words of author Jen Sincero, “Your job isn’t to know the how; it’s to know the what and to be open to discovering, and receiving the how.” 123

MOTIVATION W H ER E D OES I T CO M E F R O M ?
I
often hear people speaking about their positive mindset but they only apply it to the things that are easy or they are good at. You must train your mind to be positive for everything that you do. For me, having a positive frame of mind when approaching a workout regimen easily translates into my daily life. I am a firm believer that we as humans can control how happy we are in our lives, how successful our relationships are and how others respect us. This all boils down to the type of energy you put out into the world. My motivation comes after applying positivity to whatever task I do and the success of that task, whether in the gym, in business or even around the house adds more fuel to my passion for living life. More times than I can count, while getting in a nice workout, I have come up with ideas and solutions for my businesses that have helped me get one step closer to my dreams. This all starts with one simple thing. That thing is a positive mindset. Without it, I can honestly say I wouldn’t be where I am today. Being involved in a highly competitive industry can sometimes deter people from even wanting to take part. Not me. I thrive on the competition and figuring out ways to get a step ahead of the next person. As a veteran of the industry for over 30 years, I consider the gym my home base. This is where I start my days. It’s more than a place to build my body. It’s a place where I build mental clarity. The gym is my time to work on myself. Life can get super busy and make us forget about ourselves but I urge every single person that reads this to take a step back and dedicate time to yourself inside and out. Making your body aesthetically pleasing is great but what’s most imperative is that your mind is strong. The gym is not a place to shy away from. I am a walking testament that fitness and positivity influence happiness on a large scale.
WITHOUT IT, I CAN HONESTLY SAY I WOULDN’T BE WHERE I AM TODAY.

hen do you typically go to see your doctors? Is it only when you’re sick? Is it when you need a prescription or have to have a surgery? Do you go when you’re healthy? Do you go to be preventative? One of the biggest things that I see wrong within the healthcare system today is that people wait until something goes wrong with their health until they fix it. Furthermore, they want to fix it as fast as they can. Nevertheless, the truth is there is no such thing as a quick fix with your health and that is why being preventative is the number one thing you can do to truly be healthy and improve your quality of living.
FIND ANSWERS
It is time to start identifying the causes of our health problem instead of treating the effects. In many instances a person experiences certain signs and symptoms within their body that can be fixed by simply locating deficiencies or hormonal imbalances with blood work. Examples of this can include: unexplained weight gain due to high cortisol levels; extreme fatigue related to B Vitamin deficiencies; cramping caused by potassium deficiencies; constipation from magnesium deficiencies; and leaky gut which will show high antibody levels. The list goes on and on. In addition these blood panels can help find out exactly what your body requires to function at optimal levels. There is no such thing as a “one size fits all” in health care. Everyone’s genetic makeup and biochemistry is different. Everyone’s body absorbs and processes food differently. Having blood panels done annually will allow you to regularly monitor how your lifestyle is impacting your health. From there you will then be able to take the appropriate steps necessary toward making improvements.
BODY MAINTENANCE
Tired of being in pain or being stiff and achy? In the world we live in today, due to our daily activities and our desk jobs, our posture is worse than ever. With that said we are creating more and more muscle imbalances and stressor in our body and this is the cause of our pain. 126

Pain medication or muscle relaxers may help with the acute discomfort, but it is not going to fix your internally rotated shoulders and tight chest that are causing your upper back pain. You have to get adjusted, get deep tissue massages, and work with a physio or physical therapist to improve your posture. In addition, everyone must reconsider what he or she is doing in the gym. I understand that everyone wants to work on their aesthetics, however, the main focus of our exercise routines should be to fix the problems that we have within our bodies. This is inevitably going to get rid of our pains for the long term, allow us to move better and still achieve the body that you want.
PROPER NUTRITION TOOLS
You truly are what you eat! Making healthier transitions or cutting out certain food can drastically change your overall health. There isn’t a condition out there that couldn’t be positively affected, if not fixed by eating a certain way. As Hippocrates said, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” Finding someone to work on your diet with in my opinion is the number one thing that you can do for your health. There are so many natural remedies that you can find with food, you just need someone to show you how and when to use them. ANNUAL VANDERPUMP DOG FOUNDATION F UNDRAISING GALA
C
elebrities galore, including Mario Lopez, Leona Lewis, Lance Bass and Fortune Feimster, flocked to support Lisa Vanderpump at her non-profit foundation’s first annual fundraising gala. Set amidst pink cherry blossoms at the stunning Taglyan Cultural Complex in Hollywood, The Vanderpump Dog Foundation Gala brought hundreds of people together in one place to echo with one voice, “Stop Yulin Forever!” The purpose of the Gala was to raise awareness about The Vanderpump Dog Foundation’s efforts to end the dog meat trade, draw attention to their current and future campaigns within the US, and raise money to continue the Foundation’s work. The Vanderpump Dog Foundation’s founder, Lisa Vanderpump, made a heart-wrenching and moving speech, while introducing the trailer for their upcoming documentary The Road to Yulin…and Beyond. Mario Lopez was the host and MC for the evening, opening the gorgeous event, introducing the incredible performers, and bestowing an award onto dog activist Lance Bass.
The night kicked off with an amazing performance by Leona Lewis singing the Stop Yulin Forever campaign song “(We Are All) Looking For Home,” that was generously donated to The Vanderpump Dog Foundation by award-winning songwriter Diane Warren. Eric Benét also gave a fabulous performance to the attendees, which was followed up by a lighthearted routine (complete with dancing dog costumes!) by some of the troupe and pros from Dancing with the Stars. Many of Lisa’s close friends showed up to support the cause, including a wonderful amount of celebrities who helped raise awareness on the red carpet and through social media. The night was stunning, fun and yet also informative - encouraging the attendees to ask the question of “what are you doing to help end what is happening to man’s best friend?” For more about The Vanderpump Dog Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit dog rescue organization.
