LETTER FROM THE EDITORIN-CHIEF

WIDE BRIM HAT BY CHRISTINE A. MOORE MILLINERY CAMHATS.COM

ummer is in full swing and this issue is bursting with delicious summertime experiences. Escape into our luxurious travel pages, where we’ve featured some of my favorite places in the world. From the eclectic Caribbean chill of St. Barth’s to the beaches of Tahiti; from the elegant hidden shops of Milan to the Côte d’Azur (my home of 9 years), every journey we take you on is infused with summer luxury. Even our Fashion features have a thrilling exotic element- a Modern Marrakech set against the vibrant backdrop of the Hotel Californian in Santa Barbara. On our cover this issue, I am thrilled to honor the incomparable Laura Linney. Seemingly a throwback from a bygone era, Laura embodies true dedication to her craft – someone who radiates a palpable love for what she does. Talking to her, we were over whelmed by her passion and authenticity – she reminded us of a Hollywood that was less mired in the politics or the negativity of shameless competition, and more invested in paying homage to the art of storytelling. Laura’s devotion and commitment to her work also infuses her philanthropy – and we loved being able to draw attention to the work she does with children. This is one of my favorite covers and I hope you are as enamored with our extremely in-depth Q&A as I am. As usual, we have a major focus on charitable endeavors and philanthropy this issue – it’s always paramount to us that we highlight important causes. This edition, we’ve featured one of our favorite events, Power of Love. Our Beverly Hills Lifestyle team has been personally affected by the tragic ramifications of Alzheimer’s, and we are so glad to be able to document the inspiring work happening at Keep Memory Alive and the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health. Summer is the time to hold on to your loved ones and savor every moment. Growing up in London, it was rare that we had the opportunity to sit and eat outside – living in LA now, I appreciate every meal that can be indulged in al fresco – and, when they’re spent with friends and family, it makes it that much better. In these turbulent times, it’s important to recognize that, wherever you are, the true luxury of summer is being able to enjoy it with the ones you love. So, sit back, make yourself a Strawberry Rosé Margarita (p. 110) and let us immerse you in all things summertime. Love always,

magine being serenaded by Michael Bublé and dining on decadent cuisine prepared by celebrity chefs, alongside wine selected by master sommeliers. Now, imagine how good you’d feel knowing that this festive evening in Las Vegas, the entertainment capital of the world, is so much more than a party. Each year, Keep Memory Alive’s Power of Love® gala celebrates life and raises funds for Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health’s programs and services. Since 2009, the year the center opened, this signature event has drawn Grammy Award-winning artists and celebrity chefs who have become household names. No wonder it now attracts a national audience. Camille and Larry Ruvo, who are the center of making this event what it is, have a humble and beautiful desire to communicate the deep need to eradicate and create a conversation around diseases that are not normally spoken about. They approach the night by celebrating the caretakers and reminding the ones affected with the diseases that they are not alone. They are working tirelessly to make sure that these diseases are a part of our history and not our future. Beverly Hills Lifestyle has been affected personally by Alzheimer’s, when our former Editor-in-Chief’s husband and our President’s father was diagnosed 10 years ago with this insidious disease. Keep Memory Alive and the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health were the reason that they were able to get through the hard times; The Power of Love event is the reason that families like ours are also able to have that level of support. We proudly honor this impactful and dedicated organization, and we are grateful for their unrelenting support and hard work.

he newest endeavor from Jeff D. F. Trotter, the founder and principal designer of Jeff Trotter Design, is a line of custom designed surfboards that are both sculptural pieces of interior art and functional high-performance boards. The perfect synergy of style and sport, these elevated stone and tile inspired prints capture Jeff’s unique vision for contemporary coastal living. “I grew up spending endless summer days on the beaches of Santa Monica and Malibu, so coastal living has always inspired my design aesthetic. My goal was to design sophisticated, real boards, that function as beautiful works of art when they’re not out in the water.” Each board is custom made to order; hand carved, shaped and glassed in Southern California. Starting at $2,100.00 these boards are available in three sizes by custom order: jefftrotterdesign.com

DANIELA by Eric Harrison

D

aniela Magun isn’t simply a nostalgic pop culture icon for the Latino community, she’s a woman that has overcome more than a lifetime. If we look back to the 90s, we find a Latino group on the rise (maybe you’ve heard of them... does Kabah ring a bell?) – for 13 years Daniela wasn’t just the driving force of a pop group, but a woman in the shadows that struggled to be heard. In the past few years, Daniela has become a very different person from the singer we grew up listening to. Raising two beautiful boys with her husband, Jack, in Mexico City, she has finally found the balance in her life that she’s been searching for. With the current political climate and some American media groups, Latino culture has faced a difficult burden this year – often being portrayed in a negative light. In tried and true form, if you search for a negative, you will find a negative. Daniela Magun is here to stop that, and that’s why we love her! Throughout the years, Daniela has been a loud activist and proud Latina woman looking to change the American perception of Latino culture and Latin America. And she’s not alone – this love and respect for her culture joins millions of others in a fight that has gone viral. Her newest opportunity couldn’t have come soon enough - Daniela has recently become the host of a new show in Mexico (similar to The View) – and she uses the platform she worked so hard for to further her activism. “I’ve been working in entertainment for 25 years and this is the first time I feel like I’m being heard” Daniela says. “I want people to know who I am versus the me who is in costume, hair and makeup”. Daniela tells us this new role isn’t about music or selling out venues. This is a way for her to proudly share the positive views of a community she adores so much, and to show how Mexico has a unique place in this world. “We have a really cool vibe! We are family oriented, an extremely driven community. We are the people of the world.” If her passion wasn’t enough to demonstrate her ambition to change the perception of the Latino community for the better, she is a proud philanthropist, promoting and supporting her charitable causes. Diana supports a variety of charities; from Happy Hearts, to helping women who have faced abuse, to an incredible organization that helps women who have been diagnosed with AIDS, and teaches them how to have a successful child birth without transferring the disease to their newborns. Daniela Magun, who happens to be the cousin of our President/Founder of Beverly Hills Lifestyle Mark Kurian, wants to pass on and share only the positive. Life can be a roller-coaster just like Magun’s, but working hard and being vocal about what you believe in can cause waves of positive change all over the world. Mexico is a beautiful country with amazing culture that has offered up a wide array of incredible voices - and Daniela Magun is definitely one of those voices. Pop culture icon, singer, activist, loving mother, and a proud, intelligent Latina woman! “I’m finding my voice and I have something to say!” says Daniela. “Find a voice if you are a public figure. Use your voice in a positive way!”. And there’s no doubt that she is doing just that. We celebrate her for the amazing strength and influence she has shared with the world.

or home owners Azi and Rachel Mandel, the goal was a home that their family could grow into comfortably while maintaining their more formal aesthetic. The young, married couple with 4 kids frequently entertain - hosting weekly gatherings for their large family and friends - and they required a home that could easily transition from functional formal to a sophisticated entertaining oasis. This 9,000-square-foot ground-up-construction home with 9 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms was developed by Azi Mandel himself. Having a great sense of what they envisioned their dream home to look like – The Mandels trusted Jordan Carlyle of Carlyle Designs to create a completely unique and custom interior, focusing on lighting, custom furnishings and bedding. As the client specifically wanted an interior unique to their home, about 80% of the furnishings in this project ended up being bespoke, the perfect way to personalize any client’s home. Using a palette that is timeless and elegant, Carlyle created a modern tone-on-tone light color scheme anchored and grounded by traditional ebony wood and marble architectural details throughout the home. Focusing heavily on the master bedroom, Carlyle transformed their master suite into the homeowner’s dream retreat. Featuring a private office space, a custom antiqued mirror-cladded fireplace and a gorgeous headboard that is wall-trimmed with antique brass and lacquered panels - this suite is nothing short of graphically chic. Custom furniture and bedding in a monochromatic scheme of black, creams and brass finish the space off with classic style and sophistication. “We have a love for layering, which is highly visible throughout this project,” says Carlyle. Perfectly complementing the more traditional architectural details of the home, Carlyle balances luxe finishes with lush tactile materials creating the perfect layered interiors for the Mandel family. “I believe that, as designers, we have to be extreme editors. Design is ultimately the result of an infinite number of choices made. The ability to edit is what I ultimately believe defines one’s aesthetic,” said Carlyle. What Carlyle has edited in this New Jersey home is a masterclass in transitional interior style. An eclectic mix of formal interior architecture, elegant clean lines and a sleek monochrome color scheme rich with bespoke bronze and gold detailing, makes for a decidedly sophisticated modern finish.

LAURA LINNEY ON THE COVER

by Lisa Vanderpump & Mark Kurian Photographer - Noe DeWitt / Trunk Archive

I

t is always an honor to meet someone who is both extremely accomplished and inherently humble. Talking to Laura Linney, we were struck by the passion she has for her work, tempered with a humility that seemed to per vade everything we discussed. With an open-book authenticity, Laura regaled us with stories about her life and career – and, from her answers, we were mesmerized by the true depth of her character… a depth that translates into every role she plays. With a history that is firmly rooted in the stage – Laura’s father is well-known playwright Romulus Linney - Laura is a rare find; a theater powerhouse who translates across multiple acting platforms, seemingly with ease. The range of Laura’s career is evident, not only in the choices of mediums she has embraced - television, film and stage – but in the roles that she has chosen to bring to life. Not many actors can carry a play like My Name is Lucy Barton – 90 minutes alone on stage effectively playing two characters, a daughter and her mother, simply through a collection of reminisced moments– let alone do it to standing ovation. It is obvious from her body of work that Laura is a powerful storyteller – someone who understands the complexities of human interaction and embraces it in all its intricacy. Despite often seemingly ordinary, the roles she plays are deceptively complex – she isn’t afraid to depict the darker underbelly of human nature. The nuances of her characters, and the subtle way in which she allows them to indulge in their flaws, shows her insight into the human soul. From her humble stage beginnings to her award-winning work on the silver screen, Laura’s characters have always rung true – and from our conversation it became apparent that that is because Laura herself is so authentic. Authenticity often stems from a deep-seated understanding of what one is passionate about; and it quickly became obvious to us that Laura is passionate about storytelling. Not only dedicated to telling those stories herself, but in instilling that love of the arts into future generations. It’s clear that, whether it’s as a storyteller or as a mother, in everything she does, she brings excellence to her work. We are thrilled to be able to tell you part of her story. *** It is rare when an actor embraces so many acting platforms, as switching between theater, TV and film can be notoriously difficult, but you seem to do it effortlessly. Do you find it difficult to go from one to another? I love jumping around from medium to medium. It's very challenging. It keeps me on my toes and things are never boring because of it. Every time you switch from medium to medium, your lifestyle changes drastically… just because of the schedule and all the elements involved. Also, I find that the theater work makes the film work better and the film work makes the theater work better, and it constantly sort of unearths new questions for me about different types of technique and how to approach the work from a different perspective. So, it just keeps the study of all of it sort of fresh for me.

45

ON THE COVER

Because of your family’s history with theater, and your start there, deep down do you still consider yourself a Theater actress, despite all your successes in other media? Well, it's certainly the main influence. And the genesis of all of it is my inherent love for the theater, and for the reasons why theater is done, and the work ethic that goes behind it, the community that comes from it, the challenge of doing it, and the discipline that it takes to do it. So that's really [the] foundation of everything. Then, much to my surprise, film and television sort of came along and I was opened up to a whole new world. Which just enhanced my curiosity about how to tell a story, how to move a narrative for ward... and what the different ways are in which to contribute. You’ve been nominated for Oscars, Golden Globes, Emmys and Tonys (and won quite a few!), which one was the most exciting or surprising? Well, you're always sort of stunned when it happens. And it's always very nice when it happens. And they all sort of have a different flavor to them because of the experience that you're being recognized for. I think I'm proud of the Oscar nominations because all of those movies were really underdogs; they were all independent films. Just the fact that I was nominated at all is a shock and a very, very nice thing. I think the Emmy for John Adams is probably what I'm proudest of, because I was very proud of that work. I grew up thinking that [The Tonys] would never, ever, ever be possible for me and the fact that I've been nominated as many times as I somehow have is very meaningful to me. The theater is just very important to me, so it means a lot. Tales of the City was your breakout TV role…how was that experience? Yeah, it certainly was. It was really my entrée into film and TV. I had no idea if I would enjoy it, if I'd be any good at it… during the first [day] of filming Tales, I thought, oh, I kind of like this. Does that role still resonate with your career now? Oh, absolutely. Tales changed my life. In many, many ways it completely changed my life. It introduced me to a whole other medium in which to work. It introduced me to people who are very important to me still. My son's middle name is Armistead for a reason! Alan Poole, who's producing the one now, is still a great friend. I made lifelong friends on that show. Are you excited to reprise your role in the new adaptation? Yes, it's fantastic. It also just completely aligns with my inner personal, political philosophy of people's lives and who we are as human beings. It's been an unbelievable touchstone for me. You effortlessly command 90 minutes on stage alone in My Name is Lucy Barton – in your London stage debut. The role is very intense – did you find it ner ve-wracking? I was absolutely terrified. I was terrified that I wouldn't be able to learn it, because I literally flew from doing Ozark for five months, into rehearsal the next day. We had a very short rehearsal process in New York, so I was able to be with my family. Then I flew to London …it's 37 pages and I learned the last four pages on the plane. I told myself I would not land in the UK without knowing the whole thing. Then I had another week of rehearsal, and then we ran it for three weeks. So, it was fast and furious and very intense and amazing. I mean, I had always dreamed of being able to do something in London. The fact that it ended up being a one-woman show was a little more than I had anticipated! But it was amazing and I hope I get to do it again.

47

ON THE COVER

It’s wonderful to see your character develop in Ozark, and you do such an incredible job of balancing the dark side of desperation and greed in the show with the family relationships and humor. Has this role been challenging for you, or has it been exhilarating to play somebody who is straddling such an ethically ambiguous line? It's great, great fun, because it's murky and not all clear, and she's not one thing, and she doesn't know herself very well. She's really, really shrewd, but she's not very mature. So, there's a great juxtaposition to play there. She's a little ahead of herself in many ways and then she's very underdeveloped in others. She's very impulsive. She's not terribly contemplative. She's reactionary. And she gets herself into a lot of trouble. And then, she can really come and save the day. So, she's just all over the place and it's great fun. It's particularly great fun because everyone involved is just wonderful. What was it like working with Jason Bateman in this endeavor – has it been interesting to see him delve into this role as actor, director, executive producer? Oh, it's been fantastic. You can have wonderful, wonderful material, but if you have a great team that's executing that wonderful material, then the whole experience is really a joy. And Ozark has been terrific. Also, Chris Mundy, our show runner and head writer, is collaborative in the most welcoming way. It's a fantastic environment in which to work. It's really special. You have worked with so many incredible actors. Do you have a favorite co-star? I don't. I've been so lucky. There're so many people who I truly love [personally] and have loved working with. I've worked with Liam Neeson many times [and] with Richard Gere many times…Brian d'Arcy James, who I've worked with in the theater. I've been very, very, very lucky. Janet McTeer, who I got to work with this past season on Ozark, rocks. It's just great to work with people who have such different experiences from you. People who have never been on stage, ever. You can learn so much from them. I just love actors. Actors are generally good, generous ... most of them are selfless, hardworking people. It's so great to hear someone encourage and celebrate that, because often people want to just put themselves at the forefront. No, they really are. They have a terrible, terrible reputation in many ways, and sometimes that reputation is deser ved, but most of the time, really most of the time, people are hardworking and generous and kind and it's a wonderful community. No, but it's true - there's this weird sense of trying to pit people against each other... and it's not why we do what we do. It's actually the opposite. I don't think that's spoken about as much as it should be. Some of the roles you’ve played in the past few years are extremely challenging and unique. From Little Foxes to My Name is Lucy Barton, to Ozark, you’ve had your hands full! Are you strategic in the way you choose your roles? It just sort of happens. I'd love to say I'm strategic. I'd love to say I have that type of control, but no actor really does. I think there're maybe two actors on the planet who have that type of control. It's been a very good year for me, as far as just the quality of the work and the groups of people that have invited me to come be a part of whatever they're doing. Little Foxes was an incredible challenge, and I loved doing that. Ozark has been a joy; Tales is just like returning home; and Lucy Barton is probably the most challenging thing I've ever done. So, it's been a great year. One of the things that we appreciate and love most about you as a person is that you're a mother, and it seems you made that choice so intentionally. Well, here's the thing about becoming a parent when it's not an easy decision to make, regardless of your gender or your sexuality or anything like that. You cannot imagine your life with them and then you cannot imagine your life without them once they arrive. You cannot. There is never a bad time to have a child, ever. Being an older parent, if you surround yourself with good people who can also contribute to your child's life, then you're on pretty solid ground. You want to make sure they have a safety net.

48

ON THE COVER

Do you find that your choice of roles is ever informed by the way you’d like your child to see you in the future? I mean… I certainly did that with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I had the opportunity to do that and I thought, “you know, I should do at least one thing that my child can see where he won't be emotionally damaged.” There's not much he can see that I've done where that won't just completely damage him while he's young. So, I wanted to do something. That's the only time I think I've made a conscious choice to think about that. And then the rest of it, you just try and do good work. And sometimes it will be good and sometimes it won't be. Sometimes things work and sometimes they don't. You have to sort of give yourself a break about that. We love that you’re inspiring and you’ve used your platform and influence to help draw attention to some incredible causes and organizations—we’ve seen how passionate you are about the work you’ve done with Juilliard. We’d love to hear more about that. Well, the arts in general, I am very passionate about. I think the arts are essential to society, to culture, to community. I think it is an underutilized resource for people. I'm a firm believer in the medicinal qualities of the arts in general. It does nothing but make a community and a country better. Many of your causes support and revolve around children. Can you tell us a little bit about why that captured your heart? Well, I think if you help children with the basics and make sure that they are in place, the likelihood of them having a healthy life just goes up. The percentages just go up. If those basic things are provided and you have a healthy child; a child who is healthy physically, mentally, spiritually; who feels safe and who feels loved, and who has access to education and medical care; that is then is going to lead to a healthy individual… that will lead to hopefully a healthy family…and a healthy household, a healthy community, a healthy district, a healthy state, a healthy country. It just reaches outward. But you have to start from the beginning. People tend to skip steps these days. It's very easy, out of impatience or a sense of being too knowing, just to skip the very basics. And they're important. They can be tedious and it can require time and patience. But it will certainly enhance the quality of everyone's life if those things are addressed. Thank you Laura Linney for being an inspiration to us at Beverly Hills Lifestyle Magazine!

t. Barth’s has been a haven for celebrities, socialites & the elite travelers for decades. It provides the ideal combination of sophistication, exclusivity & ambiance, on a picture perfect desert isle, which just happens to be complete with over-the-top amenities & points of interest. It takes a special destination like St. Barth’s to strike the seemingly ideal balance of relaxed Caribbean living with that South of France flair. It has that ebb and flow of being just the right amount of what travelers want. When it comes to proximity, St. Barth’s is accessible, while still being remote enough to stay beyond the grasps of much of the Caribbean tourist traffic. You’re likely either hopping on a tiny connection flight, flying private or disembarking from a yacht to step foot on the Caribbean’s most fashionable island. 52

STAY Since the devastation of the 2017 hurricane season, many people, businesses & islands in the Caribbean are still in the process of recovery. In some respects, St. Barth’s is attempting to see the silver lining of a cloudy situation. After sustaining severe damages, Island favorites like Le Sereno & Cheval Blanc will reopen in November & December 2018 respectively. Both hotels are turning their necessary recovery & repair into stunning renovations, which will include newly designed rooms, spas, gyms & restaurants. In the meantime, newcomer Manapany opened this year, providing eco chic accommodations in Anse des Cayes. The 43-room resort has the environment in mind, achieving an admirable sustainability model without sacrificing the guest experience.

SAND While it may be a small island, St Barth’s boast 16 pristine beaches, each with its own draw. By day, Saline Beach is popular for its shimmering blue waters and softest white sand. Like many beaches on the island, it’s very natural with no amenities or services — so plan accordingly. At sunset, head to Shell Beach, prized for the thousands of tiny shells that blanket the beach. Here visitors enjoy unforgettable sunsets and mojitos from Do Brazil, a rustic beach bar that is the epitome of come-as-you-are.

PROFILE

SCENE Upholding a theme of balance, the social scene of St Barth’s is lively & eclectic while chill. The daytime hot spots of Nikki Beach and Eden Roc prove to be as dynamic as their reputation suggests. Come here for fun in the sun and extravagant lunches that carry on all afternoon. For dinner, L’Isola is a welcome retreat, on a hillside in Gustavia. Their cuisine features Southern Italian dishes and is extremely popular among locals & visitors alike. Later in the evening the undisputed destination is Le Ti. This avant-garde nightclub provides an over-the-top experience unparalleled by many of the New York City clubs that have popped up on the island. Prepare to abdicate control as the staff brings you behind the scenes & adorns you in crazy costumes. While the damage in St. Barth’s from hurricane season has been mostly manageable, not all islands of the Caribbean have had as rosy of a recovery. In the spirit of philanthropy, we at Beverly Hills Lifestyle urge you to consider donating to Caribbean relief efforts.

TAHITIAN DREAMS by Ryan Young

“Once in a blue moon,” so the saying goes. And under such a moon, the alarm on my phone chimes. It’s three am, early on Saturday morning. My eyes rapidly open, coffee brews and a hot shower wakes my aching muscles in a modern beachfront bungalow. My first full day on the French Polynesian island of Moorea begins with this ritual, the same before any long run. Bib pinned to my shorts, shoes laced tight and I’m out the door. Moments later, I stretch before the starting line of the Tahiti / Moorea Marathon. Little did I know what adventure these islands, just a quick overnight flight from Southern California, had in store for me. My legs began the rhythmic process of barreling 26.2 miles precisely at four. Running along the shores of Cook’s and Opunohu Bays, the second full moon of the month, the blue moon, glittered on the water in the most of serene ways; the calmness of nature as my breath and body worked to adjust to a slight heat and humidity. Soon dawn’s first glow silhouetted jagged, misty, mountain tops toward the interior of the island. Later I would learn these, the famous peaks of Moorea, form the southern ridge of the volcanic crater that created the island perhaps 2.5 million years ago.

77

TRAVEL & FOOD

With each stride, like Alice, I fall deeper and deeper into a whimsical, Polynesian Wonderland, losing myself in a surreal world of endless Queen pineapple groves and crystal clear lagoons, canvases of lush greens and sparkling blues in which unassuming baby sharks and sting-rays beg for attention. These are islands with a people rich in customs, celebrations and hospitality; a people enchanted with mana, a supernatural force living in all things nature. Good or evil, all humans, animals, or objects contain mana. I’m told that what matters is how we embrace it and how we allow mana to embrace us back; it’s how and what we allow ourselves to be open to experiencing. Out on the run that morning, a beautiful elderly woman crowned with a hei smiles at me from the side of the street. She gestures for my attention speaking no English. I can tell she’s curious to know where I’m from. “Los Angeles,” I respond. The lines on her face tell a great story of a life well-lived in peace and harmony, perhaps some heartbreak and disappointment along the way, but a balanced life in totality. She motions to my phone, nudging a picture of the moment be captured. After the marathon, I lay relaxed on the beach, staring across the water toward Tahiti. I think of the joyous woman on the street, the local volunteers dressed in floral pareos offering hand-cut fruit at aid stations and of the tribal rhythms from traditional wooden drums known as pahus and toeres. I arrived on the islands feeling a certain satisfaction. Four years ago, on the heels of a breakup, I set out to explore the world in search of awe and wonder. I went searching for “more.” Years mostly free of dating, a relationship one of the furthest things from my mind; the Universe and my journey brings me here, one of the most beautiful islands in the world and a known honeymoon destination. Criss-crossing Moorea on a four-by-four, hiking the inland jungles or learning how to make fresh coconut milk, I was blissful in solitude. This is an adventurer’s paradise. But, in the face of contrast, in the face of such natural beauty, I began to imagine sharing these moments with someone I love. Comfortable in who I am, yet open to all of life’s great experiences. Some of our earliest mythologies regarding French Polynesia originate from a naturalist on board France’s first worldwide expedition. The year, 1769. Philibert Commerson pens he has witnessed “the state of natural man born essentially good and children of nature whose instinct has not yet degenerated into reason.” Two hundred and fifty years later, this is a place still ruled by a care-free spirit. It’s a place where the majesty of nature reminds us of what truly matters. It’s a place where the philosophy “aita pea pea,” meaning “not a worry,” reigns. So, like Alice, I learn reason and logic only get us so far. Sometimes it’s not about the pace I run, the miles I’ve crossed and the countries I pin on the map. It’s savoring poisson cru, dancing under the moonlight with friends who just minutes ago were strangers, and swimming with giant sea turtles among innumerable dolphins. Tahitian legend says Hiro, the god of thieves, hatched a plan to steal one of Moorea’s mountains, Mount Rotui. Pai, a demigod, learned of the evil plot and kept watch high above from Point Tata on Tahiti. When Hiro and the thieves put their plan in action, Pai, using his god-like strength threw his magic spear across the water, piercing through the top of Rotui’s nearby sister peak, Mouaputa. In so doing he rose the island’s roosters and scared the bandits away. But they didn’t leave empty-handed. They managed to escape with a fractured portion of Rotui. Sure, there are many reasons for travel; business, leisure and relaxation, curiosity, a desire to learn, or to see new places. We travel to uncover different parts of our soul or to foster a deeper compassion between seemingly uncommon cultures. But what is travel at its core? It’s changing our internal vibration. It’s choosing to look at things, people, and locations with a new, fresh perspective. I came to Moorea, French Polynesia, to run a marathon, but like Hiro and the bandits, I feel I’ve stolen a piece of the island. I leave a changed man. Open. Ready for love. And embraced by mana.

TIARA YAKTSA REDISCOVERING THE CÔTE D’AZUR by Bobby Ciletti

T

he trouble with hot spots is that they are exactly that - hot. These destinations are in high demand and often in short supply, creating an exclusive ecosystem with some drawbacks that temper the feeling of being in paradise. Whether confronted with crowds, congestion, traffic, scarce availability or soaring prices, the side effects of a destination’s popularity may make one think twice before heading into crowded waters. A place where this challenge can be all too evident is in the South of France’s Côte d’Azur, which welcomes over 11 million tourists from around the world each year. A seasonal destination that sees its sleepier shores come to life in May & June after the Cannes Film Festival, sees its tourism levels spike in August. This predictable pitfall of a hotspot leaves many swimming upstream to stake a claim. For those who are lured by the glamour of yachts, beach clubs, film festivals & sparkling coastlines, but seek a more secluded, intimate environment in the heart of the Côte d’Azur, they will be delighted to discover the gem known as Tiara Yaktsa.

83

TRAVEL & FOOD

Perched among the sea-facing cliffs, with the Esterel mountains as its stunning backdrop, the five-star Tiara Yaktsa resides in the little known city of Théoule-sur-Mer. This enchanting landscape is nestled in the center of all the South of France has to offer, conveniently located a 45-minute drive from Nice Côte d’Azur Airport and under 30 minute drive to Cannes. This serene former fishing port harmoniously merges the glistening blue sea with the crimson cliffs of the Esterel to reveal a captivating place where the natural scenery conquers the seemingly invincible scene of the Côte d’Azur. The property’s somewhat humble beginnings as a private home in the 1920s became a labor of love for the current owner who grew up summering at the hotel as a boy. It’s his love of this side of the South of France, conveniently tucked away from the crowds & chaos, that inspired the successful hotel developer to fashion Yaktsa as his most precious hotel. Accentuating his love of the hotel, the Yaktsa name derives from one initial from each of his six children. At this 21-room boutique, guests are treated to every amenity necessary to settle in and relax for the duration of their stay. Unless lured by the bustling options of the region, guests never need to step foot off the property to savor all the fabulous features of the Côte d’Azur. Though it’s safe to bet that the initial impression of welcome drinks on the grand balcony overlooking the hotel grounds & vistas of Mediterranean waters & mountains, will be enough to cement anyone in place. The hotel’s signature infinity pool provides unprecedented views of the sea & bay. It is perhaps the most enviable photo op guaranteed to deliver the ‘likes’ on Instagram. A short ride down the hill and guests can visit the Miramar, the Yaktsa seaside sister, which features 59 rooms, and a larger, happening restaurant perfect for lunches and more laid back dinners. Guests staying at Yaktsa have the option to leave the peaceful poolside to take a plunge in the sea at the Miramar’s private beach. It’s not only the setting that impresses the most discerning traveler, the Tiara Yaktsa also boasts its Relais & Chateaux affiliation, affirming a level of ser vice & hospitality that permeates every corner of the meticulously designed property, including its top rated restaurant L’Or Bleu, specializing in Provençal gastronomic delights. A mélange of cultural influences are found throughout the property & its exquisitely appointed guest rooms & suites, with touches of Lebanese, Portuguese & Mediterranean. The suites offer the utmost in comfort, especially for guests who wish to linger longer. The views from the private terraces are worth the splurge. While the hotel’s romance & relaxation can be intoxicating, there are endless activities for the more active traveler, including curated hikes, electric mountain biking, kayaking, paddle boarding or drifting further on a private 52m yacht rental. The nearby port in Théoule-sur-Mer houses a helipad which the hotel can arrange to quickly shuttle you to the happening scenes of St. Tropez, Monaco & Cannes in a matter of minutes. The beauty of the Côte d’Azur is undeniable and, thanks to Tiara Yaktsa, the desire for an intimate foothold into an ever popular region is possible without sacrificing the convenience, glamour or sophistication of this beloved destination. Memories & faint scents of orange blossom, the hotel’s signature scent, will have you constantly daydreaming of a return to this paradise. For more information visit yaktsa.tiara-hotels.com

alm Springs (and its plethora of surrounding areas) is a chic and fun-filled destination in its own right; however, for Angelenos, it’s also the perfect quick escape when summer beckons you poolside but work won’t let you answer. A languid drive out of the city and you’re in another world – one where the history, landscape and laissez faire attitude combine to immerse you in relaxation. While most people tend to wait until the later months, when the city’s balmy warmth can lick the wounds of winter, don’t underestimate Palm Springs in the summer. The dry heat (perfect for sipping margaritas poolside), the vibrant bougainvillea, and the delicious al fresco restaurants are the perfect reason to slip away from LA for an easy and enchanting summer weekend. One of our favorites, when beauty & relaxation is the requirement, is La Quinta, a short drive from Palm Springs. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the rugged Santa Rosa Mountains, the legendary La Quinta Resort & Club is the longest-running resort in the Palm Springs desert area and one of only two resorts in the country for which a city has been named. Spanning 45 vibrant acres, its verdant grounds are accentuated by beds of colorful flowers; fragrant citrus trees; cypress trees and cacti; sparkling pools and picturesque courtyards…all framed by towering palms. Boasting championship-caliber golf, award-winning dining, and expansive spa and fitness facilities, the resort is a go-to for Angelenos looking to revel in the stunning landscape and submerge themselves in summer. SAN FRANCISCO’S ALEXANDER’S STEAKHOUSE by David Silva

O

n your next visit to San Francisco, forego the cliché clam chowder and tofu-quinoa and treat yourself instead to a culinary adventure courtesy of Alexander’s Steakhouse located in SF’s SOMA district.

Don’t let the traditional name fool you. This Japanese-infused eatery turns the traditional steakhouse concept on its head. Featuring a meticulously curated beef program, emphasizing ingredients sourced from small farms in the US, Japan, and Australia, Alexander’s boasts the distinction of not only being one of only nine restaurants in the United States certified to serve authentic Kobe beef, but also of being the only restaurant in California to do so. All of which makes Alexander’s a must in San Francisco for any foodie, especially one with a taste for adventure. Our dining journey had a heart-racing kick-off with what can best be described as an ‘appetizer in a glass’ which was quite possibly the best shot I’ve ever imbibed. Seriously. Comprised of Amazu pickled cucumber, a savory miso goat cheese, and Shiso salt, the shot first hits the palate with a burst of freshness and then pairs down with a subtle salty finish. It took me on a sunset walk along Pier 39. Moreover, my dinner partner and I insisted we could quite easily have knocked back a dozen of these starters and left completely satisfied (a goal I made a note to fulfill on a return visit). This next mind-blowing moment on our unique culinary journey came when our server brought out a beautiful WR Reserve ribeye along with Yuzu Kosho chimichurri and a tasting tray of twelve unique salts. Upon delivering the complements to the already ‘melt in your mouth’ steak, our server explained that each salt would provide varying flavor profiles to accentuate our food. Wow, was that an understatement! From Welsh Oak Wales and Kala Namak India, to the oldest salt available on the market, Jurassic USA, and another called Peruvian Pink Peru (that magically turned our steakbite into the most magnificent morning egg-dish mid-chew!) - the combinations are so plentiful that multiple visits are definitely on the menu for anyone interested in savoring and sampling the multiple flavor combinations on offer. To finish off an already exciting meal, we were even more delighted when our server brought out a massive canary-yellow puff of Cotton Candy. This fluffy confection was not only spun fresh, but green tea flavored (and, better still, served complimentary with every meal). Alexander’s Steakhouse truly serves up an evening of surprise, delight and, most importantly, delicious meat.

SUMMER BBQ! SUMMER IS HEATING UP IN THE 90210 by Stuart O’Keefe Photography - Bradley Blackburn

T

his issue, I'm sharing 4 super tasty and easy recipes for your summer soirées…Beverly Hills style. It is no secret that in Los Angeles we enjoy perfect weather most of the year. Despite basking in that 75° and sunny weather, we still anxiously await summer. Now, it’s here! It is time to dust off the barbeque and get ready for warm, long, and luxurious summer nights. These four recipes are going to make those summer nights (and days out on the patio) that much more enjoyable. These dishes will elevate any outdoor get together and will pair perfectly with the memories you make with family and friends this summer. These are dishes that you can make with ease and will impress and delight your guests. Enjoy!

Summer Eaton Mess This is a popular dessert where I’m from. A mixture of cream, meringue and fruit, it’s painless to prepare. Berries are my choice of fruit, but feel free to change this up based on your own whims and taste. Peaches make an excellent summer alternative for berries! Serves 4 -6 Ingredients 2 cups heavy cream 6 cups lightly crushed store-bought meringues 2 cup strawberries, rinsed, stems removed, and halved 1 cup raspberries, rinsed ½ cup shelled unsalted pistachios, roughly chopped

107

TRAVEL & FOOD

Method

Ingredients

1. Whip cream to form soft peaks. Set aside. 2. Prepare 4 small bowls or mason jars or martini glasses. Place 1 cup crushed meringues into each bowl or jar or glass. 3. Sprinkle with the berries of choice, top each with remaining meringue and berries and finally ½ cup whipped cream. 4. Top with chopped pistachios.

2 lbs vine ripe tomatoes, keep vines on 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 sprigs thyme Method 1. Lay a large sheet of aluminum foil out on a surface. Place tomatoes in the center and drizzle with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper and place a bunch of thyme in the center. 2. Close up the foil from each corner and place on a hot grill for about 10-15 minutes.

Cedar Plank Salmon with Foil Packet Tomatoes What can I say about using a cedar plank on your grill? Amazing! And if it does not get better than that… well then try soaking it in white wine. You can thank me later for this genius tip. Serves 2

Sweet and Sour Street Corn

Ingredients

You can find this at any fair or festival in LA. I love the heat of the chili mixed with the sweet of the corn. The creamy mayo and cheese combo lends another layer of textural delight. I like to first bake my corn and get it nice and softened up before I get those lovely charcoal grill marks on them.

1 cedar plank 1 cup white wine 2 salmon filets, boneless with skin on 2 tablespoons olive oil Kosher salt Pepper ½ cup green olives, sliced in halved Lemon Wedges Fresh basil and parsley to garnish

Serves 4 Ingredients 4 ears fresh sweet corn, shucked ¼ cup sour cream ¼ cup mayonnaise ½ cup crumbled Feta cheese, plus some for garnish ½ cup cilantro, finely chopped plus some extra leaves for garnish 1 teaspoon chili powder, plus some for garnish 2 limes, cut into quarters

Method 1. In a baking dish, let cedar plank absorb white wine for about 1 hour before grilling. 2. Prepare your gas or charcoal grill to medium heat. 3. Lay the salmon filets skin-side down on top of the cedar plank, making sure none of the salmon is hanging off. Drizzle the salmon with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. 4. Place the cedar plank on the grill and close the grill. Grill for about 8-10 minutes and check for doneness. The salmon is ready when pink in the center (I like to cook mine slightly under). 5. Using a large metal spatula, remove the cedar plank salmon and let rest. 6. Top with the foil-packet-tomatoes, a few squeezed lemon wedges and torn basil and parsley and serve immediately.

Method 1. Preheat oven to 375˚F and light up your grill to medium high. 2. Place corn on the racks of the oven and roast for 15 minutes, or until softened. 3. Finish on the grill for about 2-3 minutes each side to get those really nice marks. 4. On a large plate, combine the sour cream, mayonnaise, Feta cheese, chili powder, and cilantro. 5. Remove corn from the grill and let cool for 5 minutes. Roll each ear of corn in the sour cream feta mixture. 6. Place on a platter, sprinkle with extra Feta, chili powder, cilantro leaves, and serve with lime wedges.

Foil Packet Tomatoes This is a little great recipe my mom would make in Ireland on hot summer days. Those days didn’t happen that often but, when they did, these tomatoes were a HIT! Serves 2-4

THE NATURAL CURE

HEALTH & BEAUTY

by Dr. Jonathan Leary Photography - Bradley Blackburn

W

hat if I told you there was a plant compound that not only had exponential health benefits, but might even be the missing solution that could solve some of your health concerns?! It is a cure that naturally comes from the earth, that naturally interacts with the most prevalent network of receptors in the human body and is a lot safer than pharmaceuticals. Sounds pretty amazing right? What is this holistic remedy? It is a compound called CBD. CBD is a cannabinoid that is derived from the stalk and seed of a cannabis (hemp) plant and, when properly extracted, it is also filled with Omega 3s, terpenes, vitamins, chlorophyll and even proteins. It has been shown to be a more potent antioxidant than vitamins E & C and, what is commonly unknown, is that we already naturally have these cannabinoids in our body. It is found within our mother’s breast milk, which is thought to be vital for proper infant development. Furthermore, after a long run when your mind clears, your body feels incredible, and you experience a “runner high,” this is all caused from cannabinoids. CBD is now used in treatment for a broad and growing range of conditions from sleep and pain, to anxiety and inflammation, to epilepsy and MS related muscle seizures, to PTSD. CBD’s potential in reducing pain has led some physicians to recommend it as an alternative to painkillers like Opioids that are tragically taking hundreds of lives each year through addiction. Here’s how it works… this natural botanical concentrate interacts within our brain/nervous system and regulates homeostasis (natural condition of balance) within our body. We now know that it normalizes our mood, memory, appetite, immune function, digestion, pain sensation and internal inflammation. Furthermore, what’s even more fascinating about this natural cure is that the more regularly you take it, the more efficiently it starts to balance out all of your internal systems within the body! For years now I have used this natural cure with patients in my practice and I have seen CBD significantly help my patient’s anxiety, their troubles sleeping and, when used topically, decrease their pain. With that being said, if you knew there was a natural remedy for your nagging health concerns, why not give it try? Especially when it is an organic product from the earth. TRIFECTA THERAPY

IT'S ALL THERE. TRIFECTA THERAPY DELIVERS EXACTLY WHAT YOUR SKIN NEEDS by Bradley Ryan

S

ummer is here! Time to relax, kick back and enjoy being out in the sunshine and warmth…but it is definitely not the time to slack on your skincare routine! Summer is the time that harmful UVA/UVB rays create the most damage. Dr. Gabbay at Gabbay Plastic Surgery of Beverly Hills has spent years coming up with his Summer Skin Solution; Trifecta Therapy. Trifecta Therapy is a specialized skin treatment that harnesses the regenerative benefits of Micro-needling, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), and Stem Cell Growth Factors. Together, these three treatments provide incredibly powerful results as they interplay to rejuvenate and repair the skin. So here’s the breakdown… Micro-needling is a procedure that creates fine micro-channels in the skin, stimulating the body’s regenerative response. This regenerative response is also dependent on growth factors and stem cells to rebuild the skin. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)- PRP takes the richest components of your blood and uses them to completely regenerate your skin. Blood is a complex fluid enriched with vital components to help nourish and sustain life! The plasma is a portion of the blood that has stem cells, growth factors, proteins and nutrients that help support, revitalize and regenerate the skin. Stem Cell Growth Factor Serum- The process of skin repair and regeneration is a complex symphony involving the interplay of different cells and proteins from all over the body. Like a conductor in an orchestra coordinating individual musicians to create beautiful music, growth factors are small proteins that guide and stimulate different cells of the body to do their job in the complex process of skin regeneration. When combined together, each one of these treatments enhances the other, working together to provide a far better result than any individual treatment alone. This combination treatment truly creates synergy where the whole of the treatment is greater than the sum of its parts. Your face is your identity to the world, so you should take care of it 365 days a year. Skincare is one of the most important components of natural beauty, no matter your age, skin tone, or skin type. Gabbay Plastic Surgery understands how important your skin is- not just for you to look good, but for you to feel good as well. Live. Laugh. Get Trifecta Therapy.
