“When you run alone, you run fast. When you run together you run far. ” ~Zambian Proverb
Are you ready to RECLAIM 2020??? It’s been a minute since we met here in the pages of Be Well Magazine. So, much has happened personally and professionally for many of us since our last issue. Loss of loved ones, deadlines adjusted, priorities re-established, drive-by birthday parties and graduations just to name a few. Our September 2020 issue, Reclaim 2020, hopes to serve as a reminder of the Be Well for Women’s 3 Pillars; Be Well Connected, Inspired and Informed. During these unprecedented times of a worldwide pandemic, economic devastation and racial injustice there has also been a gift to recreate and co-create a new vision. Just wait until you read the story of our Be Well Advisory Team Member Jocelyn Gillespie Obermeyer. and how she used this time to release 100lbs with her inside/out approach. Creating and co-creating the vision is exactly what took place by offering our new weekly Be Well Community Facebook format. Our mission to support women entrepreneurs and women in transition continues to elevate with collaborative partnership. The talents and expertise of Michael Damond, our new Marketing Director and Social Media Coach and Dr. Keshia Tate who delivers a compelling message weekly about connecting our health and wealth outcomes. I’m excited to introduce our Be Well Advisory Team. Early 2020 I decided to adhere to and totally embrace the Zambian proverb that goes: When you run alone, you run fast. When you run together you run far. This 2020 has fully delivered the evidence to one of my favorite sayings “collaboration is the new currency, “ A shining example of this is one of my most rewarding collaborations with Cheryl Garrison of 50 Something Lifestyle. Eight women came together from this amazing community and CoAuthored “Becoming 50Somenting Stories of Inspiration and Encouragement for Women Over 50. So much potential and possibilities as we take this time to re-evaluate life, business and purpose as we knew it. Let’s embrace the possibilities of this season to build “Higher Community.” This issue recognizes and honors the Higher Community work of Shontina Gladney, Cheryl Garrison, Michael Damond and Dr. Keshia Tate. Needless to say, I’m extremely excited to have you join us for our September Reclaim 2020 issue. Enjoy, Carmen C. Ray Be Well Network, Travel & Events www.bewellforwomen.com

Building Higher Community Prior to meeting my dearest friend Jojopah Nsoroma WisdomWalktoSelfMastery.com, I was unfamiliar with the concept of “Building Higher Community.” As a social entrepreneur for over 30 years the concept resonated with me. Building Higher Community has become the goal post by which I determine how I navigate through this entrepreneurial space. In this issue allow me to introduce and remind you of examples within our Be Well Network of individuals that exemplify “Higher Community” through their business, passion and community. Cheryl Garrison executed a labor of love as she organized and guided 8 Women from the 50 Something Lifestlye Network to share our stories. As a result of Cheryl’s vision and passion for women 50 and beyond we Co Authored “Becoming 50 Something.” Cheryl, we celebrate and recognize your passion and work to support women 50 Something. To learn more about 50somethinglifestyle.com visit the website. Network Marketing and a traditional business model can oftentimes look as if each model is in competition with each other. Then there’s a person that comes along and has a healthy respect and experience with both. This respect is documented and navigates unapologetically between the two. This Be Well Magazine issue salutes my Business Coach Shontina Gladney. Shontina delivers consistent coaching and empowerment strategies for thousands of entrepreneurs. Dr. Keshia Tate has taken the concept of “Health and Wealth” towards a practical and results oriented paradigm. 2020 became the evidence
that one without the other simply can’t work. As a practitioner of Natural Health, Dr. Tate has created relevant conversation and next steps for the Be Well Community to experience both health and wealth. The Be Well Community is humbled and deeply grateful for the leadership and partnership of Dr. Tate to service as a Be Well Advisory Team Member all while working on the front line. As an entrepreneur we can lose sight of our purpose and why we got started. Therefore, I’m a big fan of keeping close with those in our network that continue to live a life of service with direct community impact. We know that Domestic Violence is on the rise during this Pandemic. We want to remind our readers by introducing Sandy Smith. Sandy has gone from victim, to surviving and now thriving. The Be Well Community celebrates and shines the light on Sandy Smith for Building Higher Community by building healthier relationships, family and most important self awareness. Michael Damond is in high demand these days throughout the Be Well Community. In addition to operating his full service Coaching and Consulting business Michael continues to give back. I personally along with many of my business partners have benefited from Michale’s commitment to over deliver for his customers. There’s nothing more valuable as a visionary and entrepreneur than working with someone that simply “GET IT.” Michael, it is with the deepest gratitude and appreciation. Thank you for being such an important part of our community. So much has been accomplished for our community as a result of your gifts and talents.

“To date, I have shed 107 pounds and would like to shed 53 more.”
by Jocelyn Obermeyer I have been in the lost-and-found department 73.684210526316 percent of my life. When I was 15 years old, I entered the lost-and-found section of my life. If I lost something tangible, I always found what I’d misplaced, but what do you do when you lose yourself? If I lost that sweater, I could find it. If I lost my keys, I found them. If I lost my purse, I could usually locate that as well. But, when I realized I lost myself, well, that was something I could not find as easily, and the journey to where I am today has not been easy, but it’s been incredibly worthwhile. I could always find something to make me feel better. It was usually in the form of soft, round treats or bags of savory, salty goodness. I thought I was unlocking the secret to feeling better. If I just consume what is mine and eat yours as well, I’ll be okay. I found my way! As far back as I can remember, I was a target. I had a nickname - Garbage Disposable – and a tagline, “Give it to Jocelyn. She’ll eat anything.” I was only in 4th grade. As the years went on and I got older, my weight went up as well. I started to feel like a knock-off, like the never-good-enough copy of who I should have been. At 15 years old, I was overweight, but, looking back, I would love to have THAT overweight body back right now, and that is what I am working toward. 6

In college I managed to lose the “freshman 15” instead of gain it. As anyone who has struggled with their weight understands, I found it later plus more. The busier I got, the higher my stress and anxiety, and because I hadn’t learned proper coping skills, how to balance my life so I could manage my schedule, of course, my stress levels were through the roof. I was taught - and I lived by this – “You will get through this. Just work harder.” Even writing that brings back that feeling of how I felt when it was said to me. The busier I became, the harder I felt I was working, understanding now that with every passing day, the less control I had. I didn’t want anyone to see me as lazy or unappreciative, and I was coached and taught that working hard – no excuses – was a badge of honor. To be clear, I am all for working hard and showing up, but what I have learned by living that way for 73.684210526316 percent of my life, is that there is a difference between working hard with balance in your life and filling up every minute of every day. I paid a high price for the lack of balance in my life. I stuffed my face and snuffed out my soul. If I was happy, I ate, If I was sad, I ate, If I was disappointed I ate, Grieving? I ate. Joyful? I ate. The point is that I used every emotion to justify eating. Everyone knows if I was upset with you or a situation, I could mindlessly stuff my face so YOU could make better choices. Sure. I was harming myself like that punished you in some way. I feel like that is a great illustration of cutting off your nose to spite your face. I was also an expert at hiding how I really felt. I was the life of many parties laughing, dancing, chatting with lots of people – but I was the loneliest person in the room. And sleep? Heck, no! I had far too much to do; I was so busy padding my silent spaces with chips, cookies, cheese, ice cream - by the container, of course - pie, French fries, whatever I could find. I was mainly the
snack gal, devouring it all like snacks were the magic elixir to happiness. I’ve heard you should only eat when you’re truly hungry, and I tried to follow that plan, but I didn’t know what “being hungry” meant. I think I have felt real, physical hunger maybe three times in my life. I’ve also tried a variety of food plans over the years, losing the weight only to find it again. In August 2019, I reconnected with Bright Line Eating, and it has changed my life. I love what this program offers. I was invited in November 2019 to a 24-7 Sobriety Success Meeting and quickly realized that this was a gift and the timing was perfect. This program was one of four pivotal points for me. I soon realized that for me, the inside work was what I needed so I hung on tight so I could hang on differently to a number of losses; my Dad, Patrick, and Manny (most recently), in particular, as well as additional family members and friends in the short span of 16 months who transitioned to their eternal home. I am facilitating the 24-7 Sobriety Success program, and I have created both a platform and a business: From the Inside Out. One of the gifts of working “from the inside out” is better communication and being present in a more meaningful way for my four adult sons. Mike, Patrick, Ryan, and John are the loves of my life! I work as a professional musician, conducting therapeutic music sessions as well for healthcare facilities and Hospice of the Valley. I am the Program Director for the Therapeutic Harp Foundation here in Phoenix and I co-direct the International Harp Therapy Program of the Americas with my business partner, Rachel Christensen. I have been connected with Carmen Ray and the Be Well Community for several years. This group has been inspirational and has helped me see I am worthy for selfcare! This group cheers and encourages each other. Carmen, I thank you for the community you have brought to our community!
