LETTER FROM THE EDITORS DESK

DON'T STOP!

Do Wop! Entrepreneurship is often a lonely road to travel. Be Well Magazine maintains a duty and commitment to provide an impressive cache of networking opportunities and business connections to make that road less daunting. In this issue, I am personally psyched and excited to report that success is not reserved only for the solo artist. A common misconception is that our most celebrated hero’s slaved all by themselves to attain greatness. Many men and women with brilliant ideas and genius in their genes have stopped fighting for success because the tasks were too difficult, complex, or seemingly out of reach; or so they thought. Those “should-have-beens” lacked the support necessary to coach them through to the finish. Oprah Winfrey was already a force in her field when she became a humble mentee of the late, Maya Angelou. Young Kobe Bryant sought to BE Michael Jordan, so he became a “nuisance” to MJ in

Crystal Thompson

wanting to model his intensity, finesse, and work ethic. Who was

EDITOR EDITOR IN IN CHIEF CHIEF

Mark Zuckerberg’s (CEO of Facebook) mentor? Apple’s Steve Jobs. Moral of the story, don’t stop….DO WOP!

Who remembers when “Do Wop” was the chant of many background singers back in the day? Those ladies and gentlemen behind the lead singer were talented in their own right, yet played their role and paid attention. Artists such as Luther Vandross and Mariah Carey were background singers who used not only their talent but their observations and experiences to rise to solo stardom. The stairway to their success includes the backs of many mentors. I implore you, readers, to follow the same advice I am taking for myself—be willing to DO WOP until you reach your goals. DO WOP means: Do hire a “Work Out Partner” (accountability/discipline) Do “Welcome Other People” into your development plan (be teachable) Do insist that “Wants Outweigh Pride” (focus) Do “Water Our Protégés” (pay it forward).

Whoopi Goldberg said, “We’re here for a reason. I believe a bit of the reason is to throw little torches out to lead people through the dark.” This July issue IS A TORCH!! It welcomes new contributors and welcomes back our legacies. Dig into this collection of reflections and fuel in the form of real life labors, victories, websites, books— hot off the press, interviews, and organizations that are literally extending a lifeline to those of you who are ready to WIN. COLLABORATION IS THE NEW CURRENCY. Be wealthy. Be Well. Love and wellness to you all, Crystal Thompson

LADIES, THIS IS YOUR SUMMER to truly be well as you hit the beaches and swimming pools of the World. You ARE putting some adult recess on your calendars, right? As I began to think about my summer agenda I promised myself that it would not be boring! My first outfit selection was something flowing and comfortable. I found this amazing sheer jumper that hit the spot, whether I wanted to wear it throughout the day or to an amazing brunch—I was ready. As you begin to select your fashion for events and outings, just keep this simple suggestion in mind—be and do YOU!

As I played with the sunglasses I would wear these are my favorite go-to's! I do not have to take them off when I go indoors or when the sun goes down. I just flip them up, and voila! No more leaving sunglasses all over the world. Add a little flavor to your outfits and summer by purchasing an amazing pair of sunglasses.

For my head choice I opted to put on some sunscreen and wear it just like that! Well, that is…until I found this oversized sun hat that was absolutely stunning and served its purpose very well. As you plan for outdoors, prioritize protecting yourself with the proper clothing and lotions.

TO COVER UP OR NOT TO COVER UP?

SUMMERTIME STYLE

Sun-Rise to the Occassion BY COACH SHONTINA GLADNEY

I used to be very self conscious of my body and would typically choose the first pair of shorts and tanks that I could. As I have become more confident with the skin that I am in, I still choose a flattering cover up. How about you? Cover up or not? Place your answer in the Be Well community with your favorite photo.

Swimsuits that you own! Do not forget to go for it! A nice swimsuit that fits your style, taste, and level of comfortability should be the goal here. When you put on your swimsuit, own it and just relax!

Beyond The Body Sometimes in the golden years of our lives there are many contributing factors to our declining health. Medical challenges play a part but the real path to feeling well is through fortifying your mind and soul as we treat the body. We encourage you to start each day focused on conquering, which empowers us to overcome.

What do you need to conquer today? Start each day with a grateful heart, focused on what you have rather than what you do not or wish you had.

What can you be thankful for today that shifts your focus and stirs your joy? Meditate on those things and conquer each day.

Invest in yourself! Do not wait for others to invest or fund your dreams; they don’t work unless you do. Do you have educational or professional goals? Further your education, attend conferences, keep reading and studying. Do not limit yourself based on your current circumstances; have vision to see beyond where you are right now.

Self-care is not selfish. Take care of yourself so you can rightly be there to care for others –

THE POWER OF

Community

AND COLLABORATION IN ACHIEVING WEALTH

“Your net worth is tied to your network.” Over the years, I've heard this saying and I believe it to be true. As a financial planner, I believe it is imperative to track and be fully aware of your net worth aka “wealth”, which is your assets minus your liabilities. However, numbers tell a story. If you speak with anyone about their net worth they will tell you what was involved in arriving at their own net worth whether it was an investment, an inheritance, a bankruptcy, or a large loan. There is always a story behind the numbers which is usually linked to people. Your “Financial Capital” is only one facet of what is needed when it comes to building wealth. When it comes to building a strong financial future, I want to dispel the notion that one must pull themselves up by their own bootstraps in creating one’s own definition of financial freedom. Contrary to popular belief, it takes community—a community of like-minded individuals on seemingly separate paths coming together to create and make their financial dreams come true. No one does this on an island. No one “makes it” by themselves. It takes collaboration. Porter Gale, author of Your Network is Your Net Worth, states in an article entitled, Why Your Network Is Your Net Worth, “I believe your social capital, or your ability to build a network of authentic personal and professional relationships, not your financial capital, is the most important asset in your portfolio. I believe that seeking out and working in collaboration with others who share your interests and values will provide a stronger foundation, enabling you to reach a higher level of success than you would on your own.” What a powerful word to embrace, “Social Capital”. I believe creating harmony between your social capital and financial capital allows you to eliminate the selfish pursuit of wealth. I truly believe it keeps you grounded. I also think it's a fun way to develop relationships along the way and create memories that last a lifetime.

THE POWER OF

Mentorship

Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another. ~ Proverbs 27:17 Public speaking was a fear of mine. I often preferred going unnoticed and hiding in the background. No one reaches a level of success alone without help along the way. Having a good mentor or multiple mentors can be pivotal during major junctures of life —both personally and professionally. I have always been a strong advocate of mentoring and benefited from some amazing women.

Mentors can provide guidance and encouragement, steer you clear from disaster, provide insight into things you can’t see, and heal your soul (and often your body, too) when you’re hurting.

RACHEL N. WALLACE

Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan my first mentors were my parents who led, taught, directed, guided, counseled, protected and corrected me in every stage of my life. I learned from my mother how to carry myself as a lady, taking care of family and the importance of putting family first. I learned work ethic, business mindedness, and the importance of integrity from my father. Even today at 49, my parents who have been married for 57 years still shine that guiding light I need and have grown to count on from time to time. Additionally, both of my grandmothers provided my spiritual foundation—sound Godly wisdom and sharing the power of prayer. I watched my grandmothers faithfully serve in church; praying and singing church hymns. They reminded me to never be too busy to spend time with God and thank him just for who He is.

Teachers, Administers & Counselors play a pivotal role in a young person’s life... ...especially during those early formative years. My grade school teacher Mrs. Johnson continued to mentor me during middle school, high school, and even college. She was instrumental in why I chose to attend an HBCU, (Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio) and why I pledged Delta Sigma Theta, Sorority Inc. Mrs. Johnson spoke fondly about her HBCU college experience which consequently provided me, too, with a phenomenal educational experience. In college I was blessed with 2 idyllic mentors— Mrs. Sampson, the Director of Career Services Center, and Mrs. Devond, the Assistant Director. They took

"I can attest to having mentors that have shaped and molded me into the woman I am today because of their wise advice, guidance, and counsel."

me under their wing and impacted my life the most during my time at Central. These ladies taught me how to dress properly and prepare for an interview. I credit them both for helping me get internships and my first two jobs after college. I still draw from their lessons after 27 years.

THE POWER OF

Mentorship

During my 10-year career at General Motors there were two women that mentored me—Janice Simpson and Saloni Janveja. Both

women were instrumental in helping me navigate my way through GM. Janice Simpson encouraged me to go back to school to get my MBA. Later, Saloni Janveja connected me with an opportunity of a lifetime. Because of her recommendation and vision, I was able to survive a grueling interview process and land the prestigious position of Global Marketing Manager. Lorraine Thomas is one of the most influential women in my life today. Upon moving to Atlanta in 2009 I took a Christian Education course called, “Emotional Healing” at church. Lorraine was the teacher assistant for the class. Lorraine noted my quiet and observant demeanor; I was hesitant to share. She often referred to me as an “onion” because she recognized there were many layers I had yet to unfold. She, along with the teacher, encouraged me to write and journal. As God would have it, when Lorraine later taught a Christian education course called, “Communicating God’s Love in Relationships,” she asked me to be her Teacher’s Assistant. Lorraine is not only my spiritual mentor, she also serves as my Spiritual Mother. Her presence has been essential in helping me to discover my God-given talents and my true purpose.

Lorraine stretches, pushes and challenges me to dig deeper. Because of her mentorship, she has been able to pull things out of me I didn’t realize were in me. Fast forward to today, I am now a conference speaker and serve as the Prayer Leader/Intercessor for the ministry. While I love and enjoy working at Cox Communications as a marketing professional, it is my work with Life Empowering Truths ministering to families and the homeless that brings me great fulfillment and joy. I credit Lorraine for helping me find my purpose. Anyone and everyone can and should seek a mentor, however it is up to you to build and cherish the mentor relationships you have, and never take for granted the people who can help you. Above all, recognize that mentors can be everyday people who have extraordinary and timely advice. They do not have to be superheroes or millionaires or bigtime CEOs. If your mentor chooses you as mine did, agree to be chosen. If not, hand pick someone who can help you get out of your own way.

Proverbs 15:22 says, “Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed.”

THE DESTINY D.I.V.A.

DR. BRENETIA ADAMS-ROBINSON

COLLABORATION

The Trust Factor

In our post-pandemic world, we are hearing a lot as it relates to collaborating in order to make success happen. From

corporate entities bringing resources together for community problem solving, to team members collaborating to enhance special project outcomes, to individuals bringing resources together to ensure success for the collective whole; collaboration has proven to lead to stronger, more productive outcomes for all. At the core of any collaborative relationship is the simple but profound concept of trust. If an individual has dealt with emotional wounds caused by a traumatic situation, the capacity to trust will be negatively impacted. As a result, true collaboration will be almost impossible. Trust is best defined as a belief or confidence in the probability that connecting to another entity will result in positive benefits. This definition recognizes that trust encompasses an inherent risk of vulnerability and the possibility of additional hurt or disappointment if trust is violated. Without trust, collaboration will never be established, or will fall apart quickly if the trust foundation is damaged. When a person has been hurt or traumatized by life’s issues, the capacity to trust diminishes. Whether an individual is consciously aware of it or not, after trust is shaken, the subconscious mind automatically seeks to self-protect and ensure that future disappointment is minimized.

Without healing, that intense need to selfprotect will lead to feelings of ‘you against the world’, which can result in the belief that the only person you can depend on is you, undermining the capacity to pursue a true collaborative relationship.

Collaboration is the most powerful tool in today’s society to enhance an individual’s success strategy, especially for those seeking to reach their next level. So, if one’s capacity to trust has been shattered, how do you jumpstart your journey to be able to collaborate without fear? Below are 3 power strategies to propel you on the journey. Release Your Fears: You must first face whatever has occurred in your past that fractured your capacity to trust. Dealing with your past issues will put you on the path to healing and help you deal with the fears that drive your inability to let down your guard. Healing is critical to opening yourself up to trust and potential vulnerability. Connect Outside of Comfort: Realize that stepping out of your comfort zone to connect to someone in collaboration will not be easy; but do it anyway. Practice pushing past fears and embrace the idea of being vulnerable to trust. Start with baby steps. Begin attending network events and connecting with just one person to put yourself out there. In the process, remind yourself to give new people a chance and get to know them. Avoid the urge to pre-judge them through the lens of mistrust. Push Even in Discomfort: The more you put yourself out there, the easier it is to be bold in seeking more collaboration opportunities. Building trust again will take time, but it will come if you are persistent in pushing past your fears. Be adventurous in pursuing opportunities to network. Reach out to individuals you do not know who have similar goals and interests. Be willing to open yourself up to the amazing opportunities to see where a connection can lead. Deciding to collaborate when you have been disappointed by the traumas of life will not be easy. You will need to ask yourself one simple question -- are you going to allow your fears to undermine your capacity to see your dreams manifest in your life? Success is not built in the silo of your safe environment. You must step out of your comfort zone and make it happen. COLLABORATION IS THE KEY to that level of success BE WELL MAGAZINE FOR WOMEN

Choosing to Be EXTRAORDINARY

COLLABORATIVE ECONOMICS Great, fantastic and AMAZING day, world!! I am more than excited to take my place on this platform and excel on the Be Well Network. Even more than that, I am elated to provide insight on the topic of Collaborative Economics being TODAY’s new currency!! I am Tamara Washington; a wife, a mother of five children—ages 23, 20, 13, 11 and 9; a grandmother to a four-year-old, and a serial entrepreneur of not one, but 5 businesses. Today I have chosen my newly established business, Not Your Ordinary Mom (N.Y.O.M) to help me break down the value of collaborative economics.

NYOM was derived from the very nature of this topic.

TAMARA WASHINGTON

You see, we know that individually we can achieve many great things; but when we join forces with like-minded individuals working with energy and in synergy toward a common goal, that is what will change the game; which in turn leaves greater imprints and changes in the world! Life as a mom and a wife and an entrepreneur was quite a juggling act. It wasn't until 2019, that I experienced the perfect storm of my son going to college and not knowing where to start for grants. I found myself hustling with 4 jobs to ensure that he was good. I cried taking that loan out because I felt like I should have been prepared. I thought hustling was enough and I never thought to ask for help. A parent at the school whose two sons previously graduated was quite savvy and showed me the ropes of how to research and secure scholarships. After growing through that entire experience, I began to brainstorm how I could pay it forward and help someone else to be better equipped—not just with pre-college information, but for all of the struggles, successes, and failures that I had endured and valued as it pertained to business and entrepreneurship.

"We all help one another not only in making money together but in spending money together."

Tamara Washington CEO of Not Your Ordinary Mom

Not Your Ordinary Mom LLC, is an organization for Boss Moms and women. Whether an entrepreneur, a wife, a mother, or all of the above...these individuals will benefit from our consortium. I know that today's collaboration is today's new currency and that our network is our net worth. Women that join NYOM will hear from awesome, powerhouse individuals as it pertains to health, wealth, family, and fun. I assist individuals through one-on-one coaching and mentorship to GROW through the obstacles in life that they may go through. We offer free membership, platforms to access opportunities to start their entrepreneurial journey, support from other likeminded bosses, and a way to connect on all things relative. The collaboration is that individuals from my current business pertaining to travel and health & wellness lend their voices on my website, which allow them to gain exposure and support to their other platforms. There is something to be said when we come together in numbers, aligning networks, earning and investing together; then turning around to reach for the hands of those individuals who are hungry for the knowledge to achieve and accomplish the same. That something is SUCCESS. There is no person too old or young that will not benefit from collaborative efforts! The ability to pool resources and share them, to bring together individuals from different walks of life, to pour into the masses and to cheer for one another as milestones are accomplished, is exactly what I visualize when I hear the words, COLLABORATIVE ECONOMICS. It is this very initiative that is going to make all the difference in our communities for generations to come.

So Cheers in advance to this new Currency of Collaborative Economics… I am so here and ready for it!!

Black Women AND HEALTH DISPARITIES

Hey You, Black Woman! Recently, I along with six other black female doctors wrote a book titled, The Black Woman’s Health O Pedia. We could no longer sit on the sidelines and watch our sisters succumb to health conditions that could possibly be eradicated with the proper knowledge, resources, and guidance. With alarming statistics like the ones below, it is time we RISE UP and share our knowledge and expertise to help our sisters. According to the CDC: A black woman is 22 percent more likely to die from heart disease than a white woman A black woman is 243 percent more likely to die from pregnancy or childbirth related causes A black woman is 71 percent more likely to perish from cervical cancer

DR. KESHIA TATE

In a national study of five medical complications that are common causes of maternal death and injury, black women were TWO to THREE times more likely to die than white women who had the same condition Without a doubt, ‘Houston, we have some problems! These statistics are startling and something MUST be done to address these health disparities. For decades, these imbalances have persisted and continue to grow. It is truly alarming that regardless of socioeconomic status and economic advantages these inequalities still exist. Think about this for a moment. Some might recall when Serena Williams delivered her baby. She informed her medical providers that something was wrong with her. They dismissed her and told her that the pain medication was making her confused. It was discovered that she had several blood clots that could have been detrimental to her life. Another very prominent person, Dr. Shalon Irving who happened to be an Epidemiologist with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, died from complications of hypertension just a few weeks after giving birth. Like Serena, Dr. Irving informed her medical team that something was wrong, but they continued to dismiss her concerns. These are not isolated incidents. Over and over again we hear of black women who are feeling invisible when interacting with their medical providers. Oftentimes, these providers have equated being “Black” with being uneducated, unworthy, noncompliant, or poor. Clearly, the subconscious biases that are embedded in the medical system continue to affect the quality of care for black women. Enough is enough! We decided to change the course of these types of outcomes.

Black Woman, we want you to know that ...

THE GLOBAL ENCOURAGER LINDA MICHELLE TRAINER

COLLABORATION AT THE ROOT OF

Self Care

The Bible states that God is Love. I have come to know (even beyond my knowing) that it is the Love of God for me that enables me to do all that I desire to do; to recognize when I need to rest, as well as knowing when I need to work. It is that same steady stream of God’s love which strengthens me to care for others around me. I heard a quote that said “His name is Jesus – He is happening all over the World. The roar of victory in Him is big in my spirit. Together we will do everything He has assigned us to do.” (Ken Copeland) Regardless of your religious background, spirituality is about a relationship rather than customs and habits. Similar to the GPS – Global Positioning Satellite Systems installed in our cell phones, cars, and watches that helps us to know where we are going and how to get It has been said that one of the most difficult tasks women have is learning how to practice self-love. It has also been said that self-care is self-love. Women are often experts at loving and taking care of what needs to be tended to around us, things outside of us and often neglecting ourselves until we are completely depleted of any and every form of strength or desire to continue forward. Or worse yet, until we are flat on our backs, looking up in dismay.

there, your spiritual GPS – “God’s Power System” is more than capable of directing and protecting your journey. It is activated by faith and implementing God’s Word. It begins with acknowledgement of His presence and acceptance of His gifts of supply in every need. It is absolutely vital that you “fill your cup” so that you will be able to meet the needs of your responsibilities, while simultaneously sustaining your energy and focus to take care of yourself. That can be accomplished by connecting to and collaborating with the

One definition of self-care is an activity that we do deliberately in order to take care of our mental, emotional and physical health. Good self-care is key to improved mood and reduced anxiety. It is also key to good relationships with oneself and others. When considering collaboration in selfcare, I realize that self-care goes beyond just me, myself and I, but it is rooted in the essence of my life – in the Spirit inside me from which I live, move, and embody my

…So you must remain in life-union with Me, for I remain in lifeunion with you. For as a branch severed from the vine will not bear fruit, so your life will be fruitless unless you live your life intimately joined to Mine.”

Just as a car cannot operate properly without the engine and instruments that work in tandem to become the essence of the car, neither can we, as human vessels, function without the Life Essence of the Creator of Creation.

Translations says, “I Am a true sprouting vine and the farmer who tends the vine is my Father. He cares for the branches connected to Me by lifting and propping up the fruitless branches…….. to yield a great harvest.…As you live in union with Me as your Source, fruitfulness will stream from within you, but when you live separate from Me you are powerless.”

BEVERLY BROWN

Collaborating WITH THE ENEMY

How does the song go? “If you don’t know me by now……you will never, never, never, know me….” Anyone remember that lyric? Well, if you don’t then google it and discover that Simply Red released it in 1989; and if you’re REALLY nostalgic (like me) then let’s go back to Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes in 1972! So why on earth was that the first thing that came to my mind regarding this quarter's magazine theme—Collaboration is the New Currency? If you don’t know it all by now, then chances are you will never, never, never, know it all! The truth is, we are NEVER in the know and the NOW at the same time, but there may be a way to remedy that. As we travel through this (now) ready-set-go climate of on-line collaboration, we have to realize that if you are not collaborating with someone, something, somehow, someway—in some form or fashion, then chances are you are feeling a little stagnant; and likely a little left behind. Wake up Dreamers, you need someone else to HELP you bring your dream to pass!

Let’s explore the definition of COLLABORATE: to work, one with another; cooperate, as in a literary work: They collaborated on a novel. to cooperate, usually willingly, with an enemy nation, especially with an enemy occupying one's country: He collaborated with the Nazis during World War II.

That second definition from Dictionary.com – very interesting. It even states to “cooperate” (usually [hopefully] willingly) with an enemy nation. How powerful is that?

Collaboration is so necessary that you may even need to collaborate with “the enemy” in order to achieve your goal. And what exactly does that mean to you—the Dreamer and Entrepreneur?

So, of course we should, first, explore the real definition of ENEMY: a person who feels hatred for, fosters harmful designs against, or engages in antagonistic activities against another; an adversary or opponent. enemies, persons, nations, etc. that are hostile to one another: Let's make up and stop being enemies.

something harmful or prejudicial: His unbridled ambition is his worst enemy. the Enemy, the Devil; Satan. Notice the last definition taken directly from Dictionary.com – the devil; Satan. You mean to tell me that you may even have to collaborate with the devil? “Dreamsteerer, are you crazy?” Absolutely, I’m not; and, yes, you may have to. As the saying goes, ‘what the devil meant for bad, God can turn into good’. The best and classic story that comes to mind is that of Joseph and what his brothers did to him (collaborating with the devil) that turned out the best for not only his family but for an entire nation. His brothers collaborated to destroy him and ended up selling him to someone else. Once he was sold he found favor and became the leader of the King’s household. Then the king’s wife collaborated with the men in the household to say that Joseph had defiled her and caused him to be sent back to prison. Again, he found favor among the guards of the prison and became a leader in prison. As a leader he collaborated with two prisoners to mention him to the King when he interpreted what their dreams were. Once they remembered to mention him to the King he was brought before the King and also interpreted the king's Dreams. This collaboration caused him to be even more recognized for his Dream interpretations as he described /predicted what was about to happen to the land over the next 7 years, and produced a bounty for the king as the land dried up. This, in turn, caused his brothers to collaborate with their father to send them to Egypt to purchase food for their families. Joseph then collaborated with them to bring his baby brother and father to him to bow before him (just as he had stated in his very FIRST vision to them). BE WELL MAGAZINE FOR WOMEN

Whenever you have a goal, dream or vision, it may involve others that will help you in ways you never thought possible, and might even align with other Dreamers you never thought would or could be part of it. Think about some of the people in your life that have participated in your Dream that you may have inadvertently or unknowingly collaborated with to achieve the final GOOD or GREAT outcome.

These same Dreamers were all a part of the bigger story, all from the very beginning. Collaboration is the new currency because CURRENCY is defined as something that is used as a medium of exchange; money. a time or period during which something is widely accepted and circulated. the fact or quality of being widely accepted and circulated from person to person. Therefore, are you collaborating (connecting) to create the new method of currency (circulation) to get your Dream out to the new world? If not now, you may never, never, ever have a chance to at all. When considering the person or persons that wronged you, or the family member that sold you out, or the woman or man that lied, scorned, talked behind your back, and just, down right, hurt your heart - think again.

They may have done you the biggest favor in the world. Stay on YOUR path of GOOD and God will surely reward you in the presence of those same “wrong-doers” or “users”.

He will always put people in your path that serve a greater purpose than you can imagine at the time. We must learn to interact (collaborate) with them in order to learn and gain something even more powerful in our advancement to the greatness that God has already ordained us to have. Thank you to Carmen Ray for collaborating with a great group of Dreamers to bring this Be Well Magazine to fruition with a great team of writers, editor, design and marketing geniuses – TRULY a great collaborative effort and I am proud to be part of it!

Conscious Collaboration:

ATTRACTING HEALTHY, FUNCTIONAL, AND FUN COLLEAGUES Although I have always believed that two or more brains are better than one when taking the necessary risks to achieve your dreams, it has taken me about 40 years to attract and work with colleagues who are not only talented but healthy, functional, and fun.

When I first became self-employed, I entered into a partnership where I quickly discovered that our personal goals for the work we were mining did not match. We separated over a project I decided to take on that was aligned with MY higher purpose, but not that of my partner. I made many more attempts over the years to find the right persons with whom to collaborate; even putting the word “collaborative” in the name of my business. But the experience of an authentic and healthy business collaboration continued to elude me. Finally, last year, I experienced what I had dreamed of for so many years. I formed a collaboration with three other people whose personal goals and unique talents aligned with mine. Most importantly they are committed to self-mastery. (Please see my article from the Spring 2021 Be Well Magazine, Self-Mastery: How Your Business Can Thrive During a Global Pandemic.) My colleagues also believe that a lifestyle of thriving and ‘happy endings’ is the normal and natural result of doing work you love in collaboration with other fabulous and fun people. Our first year of profit was twice the amount we anticipated, and this year we are on track to double that amount. As a result of this very successful collaborative experience, I’ve now attracted two more situations with highly talented people committed to wellness. So, you’re probably wondering what changed for me. The answer lies in three personal and spiritual development practices I strive to do on a daily basis to raise my consciousness for attracting the experience of fulfillment in life: Morning Surrender: I consciously let go of thinking that my limited mind can figure out what is truly best for me to achieve my dreams and I prayerfully surrender to the Will of my Greater Order and Direction

Afternoon Gratitude: I consciously take a moment or two to stop and say, “thank you God & the Universe” for enabling me to receive my blessings, regardless of what form they take

Evening Forgiveness: I express willingness to let go of whatever and whoever doesn’t serve my highest good, and to receive forgiveness for any conscious or unconscious transferring of my pain onto others, and myself.

I believe that by keeping myself consciously aware of how I am feeling, thinking, and believing about myself and others, then cleaning up and releasing any and all negativity from my perception of others, life, and myself, I am able to be an empty vessel for my right stuff.

I encourage you to create or sustain your own unique practice of daily personal and spiritual development. And just watch how quickly you find yourself connected to a collaborative experience full of health, wealth, and fulfillment. May it be so. Ashé!

MY JOURNEY TO

Collabortative Economics FROM SEA TO SEE!

My Grandfather was one of my favorite people in the world. He was the first entrepreneur I knew personally. He owned land and rental properties in the little town of Rillito, where my family grew up. We even have a Campbell Street there. I didn’t know it at the time, but he was building a legacy for his children to leave to their children. I did not know if he partnered with anyone; I never saw anyone but him handling the business. Perhaps I was too young to know what was really going on. When my Grandfather passed, he left his business to his children. It seemed that running a business was easier with one person at the helm than it was with multiple. Everyone had their own ideas of what should happen, and everyone ended up doing their own thing with what Grandpa left them. I went off to college to get my business degree. I knew that was going to serve me well. I wanted to be like Grandpa. I wanted to own a hotel and live the life they led on the television show “Hotel”. Growing up in Tucson was much different than life at the HBCU I attended. There were a lot of ambitious black men and women there “getting theirs”. Attending college in the south was a totally different experience for me; probably because I used the word “totally” more than almost everyone on campus.

I did not feel I belonged. Although I looked like them, I felt like my aspirations were not high enough. Maybe I wasn’t even black enough to be there. Most of the students didn’t know there were black people in Arizona. I felt alone. I found myself back in the band and it was good to be surrounded by people that had a love for music, and loved being around each other working towards a common goal. My second semester in college, I became a member of the band sorority, Tau Beta Sigma because I wanted to serve the band while enjoying being part of the band. I was part of the dance committee, captain of the Flag Line, and drill sergeant. There wasn’t room for personal agendas with over 100 people that needed to learn, master, and perform their parts in excellence. I wore my letters with pride, but never with arrogance. I loved being a leader. I loved teaching others, and I loved that the band director could count on us to do what was necessary so everyone could be great. After college, I got married, had kids, got divorced, and got a 2nd job to support my children. I don’t know what happened to my dream of owning a hotel. I’m sure it got lost in my everyday—my new normal as a single mother. I had no time to consider a business, but I told myself after they graduated high school I would reconsider. When I thought about it again, I assumed I would align with the industry I was already in—the restaurant business. I researched what it would take to open a restaurant. When that began to get overwhelming, I “back-burnered” that dream, too. Someone spoke to me about the travel business and I started hearing phrases like, “You are in business for yourself but not by yourself”, “…personal development system with a compensation plan attached”, “Everyone has the same opportunity”, and “COLLABORATIVE ECONOMICS.” I thought to myself ‘ok, ok this is the business spiel; I am sure you don’t mean that.’ Soon after, I found myself on a Disney cruise with Carmen Ray and Shontina Gladney. I knew I was out of my league being on a cruise with these powerhouse women.

WENDY CAMPBELL I figured I would be the odd woman out, doing my own thing on the cruise while they were doing their thing. But it was their first cruise and I had something to offer them. Knowledge of cruising. They had something to offer me. Knowledge of the business. It was an equal exchange of information, and my first glimpse of what this business was really about. My connection with these ladies provided clarity of what Collaborative Economics looks like in action. I will forever call them my Sisters because they never made me feel out of place, or less than. I have learned to speak up, be brave, follow, and lead.

"We can be great together. We can build together. Everything we do as an organization is done together. We move, grow, build, and live life together. This is Collaborative Economics, and we are better together. "

TIPS FOR

Living Your Best Life ON THE JOURNEY TO YOUR DREAM LIFE

Greetings! I am really happy to be a writer for Be Well Magazine, and I decided my first article should encourage living your best life. As a Personal Development and Confidence Coach, I help my clients create a life that they love—RIGHT NOW. So basically, living their best life on the journey to living their dream life. I have decided to share some simple tips that you can implement into your life immediately. Often, we receive information and advice that is complicated to carry out; there are just too many steps. We cannot envision how to add this or that into our routine, so we become overwhelmed and, instead, do nothing. The first four are things that you need to STOP doing. They are causing you unnecessary stress. Following these are six action items that you should START doing today. Are you ready? 1. Stop feeling unworthy – When you say or think that you are not good enough, you are not appreciating the greatness that is in you. 2. Stop hanging around with negative people – Some people are just negative about life. They never see the good in anything. Being around them for any length of time makes you take on those same negative vibes. 3. Stop living in the past – The past is just that—the past. It is gone. Do not waste your time thinking about what didn’t work, what you didn’t do, or what should have been. Leave the past in the past. 4. Stop comparing yourself to other people – This is a big one, and with social media it can be hard not to see all of the great things others are doing, and wonder why your life is not as fabulous. Don’t do that to yourself. You ARE fabulous. Where you are is where you are supposed to be at this time. If changes need to be made, don’t compare. DO something. 1. Take responsibility for your life – You make decisions for what is right for you. You are the person that can make things happen in your life. 2. Experiment with life – Start doing new things. Step outside of your comfort zone and do things that you have always wanted to do. Try something new everyday, once a week, or whenever you choose. Stretch yourself. 3. Develop an action plan and implement – Do not just wait around for things to happen. Decide what outcomes you desire, then create your action plan and start executing. Schedule these items on a calendar so that you will hold yourself accountable.

4. Find a Mentor – Is there someone who is modeling the traits

CONCHETTA JONES I want to give you some action items that you can start doing RIGHT NOW to create your best life! When you allow the real YOU to come out—doing what you want to do and what you are destined to do, you will be able to celebrate living YOUR BEST LIFE!

that you would like, or who is doing the things that you would like to do? Ask them if they would consider mentoring you. 5. Be Grateful – Find something daily that you are grateful for. 6. Stick with it – The hardest thing to do is to stick with it once you have decided to do something different. On this best life journey, you will be stalled at different times. Just don’t stop. Stick with it. BE WELL MAGAZINE FOR WOMEN

READY FOR A NEW SELF-CARE STRATEGY?

Travel Together Well, HELLO SUMMER! This is a wonderful time of the year, especially for those of us who live in the Midwest. Our winters can often be long and brutal, but summer is finally here. Yay! We are able to move about the planet more freely than we could at this time last year, still taking precautions as advised by scientists and health professionals in order to remain as healthy as possible. What I really want to do is highlight and reiterate how to incorporate collaboration into your self-care regimen. There are many avenues for selfcare; do what works for you and what fits your needs.

Self-care Collaboration Suggestions: Take a walk with a group of other walkers Meet at the health club to work out with friends Select a different restaurant and meet up with business partners each month Schedule a virtual meet-up to discuss what self-care strategy works best for you Meet on Zoom to discuss highlights of a book you’re reading with others Travel with a group of like-minded individuals

Take note that this is merely a handful of activities encouraging collaboration. Please create a list that works for you. Personally, I simply love to travel! As I always say, “Travel is in my DNA”. Recently, I had the pleasure of traveling to Cancun with seven of my business partners. This was a collaboration that we all planned, executed, and profited greatly from. At the end of 2020 we decided to join forces and attend a free virtual training offered by one of the travel suppliers through our host agency. This training was extremely informative and beneficial. We learned all about the many brand resorts (all inclusive, of course) that are offered by this supplier. We were able to clarify information about the brand and ask questions. At the end of the training presentation I simply asked the manager (who was the presenter) if she could arrange a time for us to visit one of the resorts. This conversation led to our recent trip. We had the pleasure of conducting site visits at seven of the resorts owned by this brand; greeted exclusively by the resort manager at each property, and given a tour of their restaurants, spas, accommodations, pools, etc. The purpose of these visits was to acquire valuable information in order to recommend the best resort vacations to our clients based on their individual needs and desires. We had an awesome time as a team collaborating and discussing benefits the resorts can offer our clientele, the wonderful amenities, and the friendliness and personable treatment we all received!

The wisdom, the camaraderie, and positioning ourselves for higher-level earning potential is the CURRENCY gained from COLLABORATION. If you would like more information on how to collaborate with us, please contact me at yourselfcare2day@gmail.com. In the meantime have a safe, fun-filled, exciting, self-care summer!

Sisters In Success

"WHEN WOMEN SUPPORT WOMEN, AMAZING THINGS CAN HAPPEN" - VIOLA DAVIS

Hey Sis, Sister, Sistah! We are Daughters, Mothers, Aunties, Grandmothers, WOG (Women of God), Entrepreneurs, Girlfriends, and yes— we are Sisters. Have you experienced those awkward moments when you are in awe of other women yet not quite sure what to do or say? You are loving her outfit, her business savvy and confidence but instead of a compliment or asking where she purchased her shoes, you remain silent. You never make that initial contact or introduce yourself. Why is there such hesitation to jump at the opportunity to congratulate our sisters for their style, charisma, and accomplishments? And even more importantly, why don’t successful, powerful women in leadership take the time to coach, mentor and uplift those who are struggling to start a business, get promoted, or secure a seat in the executive board room? One of my

CYRENA MARTIN

favorite sayings is: “We are much more alike than different:”

Our Journeys Are a Collaboration, NOT a Competition!

“While we may be individually strong, we are collectively powerful.” ~Rakhi Voria, Worldwide Inside Sales Business Manager with Microsoft.

Collaboration is similar to cooperation. It is the process of two or more people, entities or organizations working together to complete a task or achieve a goal. Collaboration is a working practice whereby individuals work together for a common purpose to achieve business benefit. Far too often we miss opportunities to elevate by supporting and uplifting others while on our respective paths. Yes we work hard and often discover new doors for advancement on our journeys, however we cannot forget that the goal is collaboration, not competition.

Let’s normalize some best practices for healthy collaboration:

Create opportunities to connect away from work. Get to know each other; find out about another woman's passion, family, goals and dreams. The mere six degrees of separation is likely at play, and you will surely find something in common. Be Trustworthy! Never repeat or share information learned without permission— no matter what! Confidentiality will build trust and keep your reputation intact. Repeating or sharing can easily turn into or be perceived as gossip. Be the safe space for your sisters. Let them know you will be completely honest and that she will receive the support she needs to be successful. By the same token, if you are the one receiving support, be mindful of boundaries, be respectful of time, and value any corrective action or critique. Join groups, organizations, or clubs that are in alignment with your aspirations. Be an active member and attend both educational and entertainment events. Listen, learn, ask and contribute to conversations. Prioritize exchanging ideas and creating teams who work together to reach goals and fulfill missions so that no one person feels overwhelmed or overworked. Celebrate each other together and out loud—(“We did it!”) Those we join forces with become our best supporters because they come to know our work ethic, dedication, and desire to be successful. Encourage, empower, and lift each other up often. It is always ok to compliment, support, and cheer on your Sister. Today is her day and it’s ok to let her shine. Acknowledging the achievements of others shows security and strength; knowing that tomorrow, someone will take time to see you at your best, too. Set competition aside— what is meant for you is meant only for you and cannot be copied or taken from you. We are born with skills and talents which need to be nourished. Our uniqueness is what makes us successful at whatever we choose to do. Believe in yourself! Tell your story. Transparency saves lives. Although you make it look easy and glamorous, be forthcoming about the challenges that present before the triumphs. There is a sense of empowerment when we do not feel alone in the struggle for success. We are role models! However, if we do not share the entire story (including obstacles), onlookers may give up after facing the same missteps we once encountered. Share the journey, not solely the success.

GO BIGGER GO BRIGHTER GO BEYOND THE STATUS QUO Submitted by Melvette Scott The pandemic was a perfect example to how many of life’s events, situations and circumstances can happen beyond the status quo of what’s expected in both the expected and unexpected. However, to go bigger, go brighter, and to go beyond the status quo encompasses who we are! It personally means to embrace our unique experiences and implement the power and the ability to reach beyond the limits we set on ourselves and/or others may set on us. It’s to live and believe outside of the box. Go big go brighter go beyond the status quo is an appropriate topic for the SPRING issue of Be Well Magazine, because, spring represents TRANSFORMATION! Spring represents a fresh start. Spring is a new display of God's presence and power — a renewal which comes from the putting forth of Divine energy. It’s a season of harvest, and while it’s good to harvest much, we must always strive to plant bigger, brighter and beyond its status quo as well. I’ve grown so much in terms of my perspective and expectations in life. The pandemic we’re experiencing has really opened my eyes and given me a different outlook on life that speaks to this issues theme. It’s left me inspired by the rhetorical question I live by, which is, if life’s situations, events and circumstances can happen beyond the status quo, then shouldn’t our faith present bigger, brighter and beyond the status quo?!
