Adult Learning at Bexhill College

Many people enjoy learning something new or following a hobby in their spare time. Some want to develop a skill, whilst others would like to gain a qualification to help them further their career. Part-time recreational and employment courses at Bexhill College offer the opportunity to do either. The College offers professional qualifications such as certificates and diplomas in Health and Social Care or Early Years and GCSEs, as well as a wide range of recreational courses. Get to Know Your iPad Make the most of your tech! Do you want to get the most out of your iPad, but you’re not sure how to achieve this? This small friendly class will introduce you to a variety of uses for this technology, bespoke to your needs.

Improve Your Computer Skills Do you want to find out how to use computers and learn the essentials of commonly used software? This course will develop your word processing skills using Microsoft Word and introduce you to spreadsheets, presentation and the use of email and internet. Not suitable for Windows 8 users.

The main college site has a large, secure, well lit and free car park within the grounds so you don't have to worry about allowing extra time to find parking and then walking to the College - this is an important consideration for us especaially when it comes to evening classes during the dark winter months.

Pilates (Over 55’s) Pilates is suitable for everyone, regardless of age, sex and level of fitness. Each exercise can be done at different levels of intensity, with modifications for anyone with specific muscular or joint limitations. Benefits from Pilates are that it can improve overall body strength. It will also help to improve posture, mobility, joint problems and tone your body.

Healthy Eating This course is not about losing weight (although that might happen) or changing your diet completely. It’s about getting your family to enjoy food and meal times and making tiny moves towards getting your family’s diet a little healthier. Healthy Eating is all about making small changes that will suit your family and that will end up having a big impact on the way you eat.

Yoga (Over 55’s) Yoga is an ancient form of exercise that focuses on strength, flexibility and breathing to boost physical and mental wellbeing. Yoga: • Improves balance by strengthening your lower body • Strengthens your ankles and knees, thereby reducing your chances of falling Regular Yoga practice is beneficial for people with high blood pressure, heart disease, aches and pains, depression and stress. Mindfulness Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is the most recognised and established mindfulness course, taught all over the world, and scientifically proven to help people cope better with stress, depression and anxiety. The course consists of 8 weekly 2 hour sessions and one Saturday workshop for 2 hours. Through guided meditations, group dialogue and home assignments, you will learn the essential principles of mindfulness and techniques, to build your personal home practice and access the wide-ranging benefits well beyond the course. Topics will include: • A variety of formal and informal mindfulness practices, involving the use of breath and body as a focus for being aware of our experience in the present moment • Understanding the physiology of stress and how to self-regulate our moods, in order to increase our self-management in challenging situations and manage our responses more effectively • Recognising the patterns of worrying and self-criticism that often generate more stress • Learning to relate to ourselves with a more accepting and kind stance • Learning to have more mindful thus meaningful communications, connections and relationships • Developing practical self-care tools to help us grow, build resilience and perform at our optimum.

First Aid This course is designed for people who want to receive training in emergency first aid and is especially suited for nominated first aiders in smaller, low-risk working environments. The content of this course provides basic lifesaving first aid and workplace health and safety regulations.

Simply Flowers Oil Painting Bring out your inner artist. This course will cover procedures and techniques, colour mixing exercises and demonstrations to give you the confidence to paint with oils. You will look at the work of different artists and work from photos and life to undertake your personal project. Here is a list of the materials required:

Bring colour, interest and fragrance into your home with an arrangement of flowers. Guided by an experienced tutor you will create eyecatching floral arrangements, using either bunches of shop bought flowers or blooms freshly cut from your garden.

Sewing Bug The course is aimed at beginners and for those with some experience who want to get the most out of their sewing machine. Learners will be encouraged to undertake small projects to build up skills, or if you’re feeling confident, your tutor can guide you week by week through larger projects. There will be a variety of topics covered to suit everyone, as well as care of materials, tools and equipment. You will be required to bring: • • • •

Upon arrival to the car park, please buzz Reception and state the reason for your visit. Once through the barrier, you will have 15 minutes to park and register your vehicle’s licence plate at Reception to avoid a £100 fine.

Watercolour Painting Photography Film and Digital

This Photography course will offer you the chance to learn the basics of Black and White photography along with the use of the darkroom and film developing processes plus the use of the camera. We will also look at digital imaging and the use of Photoshop. This class will be flexible with what we can do, and will work with individual needs.

Psychology - An Introduction Have you ever wondered why people do the things they do and act the way they do?

Sing into... Sing into… is a series of courses looking at specific times of the year - Christmas, Spring and Summer. These are separate courses and each one is designed for you to sing for enjoyment looking at various genres of songs including musicals, classical and pop music. You will be involved with the choice of songs and will learn about basic vocal technique including breathing, voice projection and use of a microphone. Your confidence in singing will improve and there will be a performance opportunity at the end of a course and you will have an audio CD recording to take home.

Children’s Learning and Development Early Years Educator

EDEXCEL Diploma, QCF Level 3 This qualification is accredited with a minimum of 64 credits. It is a part-time, workbased qualification for learners who work with children in an Early Years setting. You must be in paid or voluntary work for approximately three days a week (800 hours over the year) in a suitable setting. The qualification gives learners the opportunity to: • demonstrate competence as an Early Years Educator; Child-minder or Nursery Nurse • develop knowledge and skills related to the specified job roles in early years education • have existing skills recognised • achieve a nationally-recognised Level 3 qualification • develop their own personal growth and engagement in learning The course is delivered by weekly classes and individual support sessions over the duration of the year, together with assessor support and assessment in the workplace.

Diploma in Education and Training (DET) with Professional Graduate Certificate in Education and Training (ProfGCE) validated by Canterbury Christ Church Year 1: This course is intended to provide skills and knowledge needed to teach successfully in the Post-16 sector. It is also suitable for trainers in industry and private organisations. Year 2: This is an extension of Year 1 and aims to further develop teaching skills and knowledge. This year the focus is on the profession as a whole, rather than the individual teacher. The successful completion of Year 2 will enable students to achieve the DET award or Professional Graduate Certificate in Education and Training (ProfGCE). Assessment for both Year 1 and Year 2: Students will be assessed by a range of methods including reflections, assignments, lesson observations, evaluation of overall teaching, presentations, group work, a Progress Log, case studies and essays. Students must pass module 1 to progress to module 2 and 3. Students must pass Year 1 to progress to Year 2. Entry Requirements: All students have to satisfy certain literacy, ICT and numeracy requirements and be educated

to at least Level 3 or Level 4 (HND / HNC), Foundation Degree, First Degree or a professional qualification. Students who have achieved at least a degree may take the ProfGCE route in their second year with tutor recommendation. To study this course you need to be employed in a training/teaching capacity or undertaking a voluntary placement which you need to secure prior to the start of the course. All students must have their teaching experience arranged and confirmed in writing prior to starting the course. This could be in local schools, colleges or training providers. 50 hours are the minimum teaching hours required a year. However it is recommended to have at least 25 hours a term/module to support development of teaching and learning. Prospective students should provide a CV and two references. Students will also need a DBS check (approximate cost of ÂŁ44) which is a requirement for the course and a mentor who is happy to support you in the workplace.

Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools EDEXCEL Diploma QCF LEVEL 2 (30 credits)

This qualification is for anyone who directly supports the teaching and learning of pupils. This course focuses on understanding, supporting, safeguarding and developing children and young people, together with optional units covering specialism such as supporting literacy and numeracy development, supporting a curriculum area, behaviour support, special educational needs, bilingual support, examination invigilation, working with parents and/or team leadership. On successful completion, you will be able to work in a role that includes specialist support for pupils in primary, secondary or specialist schools. Work placement In order to successfully complete a Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools you are required to complete a compulsory work placement. The work placement can be paid or voluntary and each learner is responsible for arranging their own placement. It is recommended that you complete 1 day a week of work placement. A confirmation of hours worked will be required before enrolment. Assessment and support You will receive assessor support sessions over the duration of the course, where you will be given guidance on the knowledge based work that needs to be produced for your portfolio. Your assigned assessor will also be visiting you within the workplace for assessment, giving guidance and feedback on practice and contributing to the evidence needed to complete the qualification.

Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools

EDEXCEL Diploma QCF LEVEL 3 (44 credits) Course info and assessment are as per the Level 2 course, but it is recommended that you complete 2 days a week of work placement. A confirmation of hours worked will be required before enrolment.

DURATION: 1 YeaR | Fee: ÂŁ2,225 (an Advanced Learner Loan could be available to cover this fee). Flexible start date to suit you as this is a work-based qualification.


Food Safety in Catering Level 2 Award

Fitness Instructing Level 2 This course is for adults aged 18 or over interested in pursuing a career in the fitness industry. The Level 2 course enables students to develop their knowledge and understanding of instructing clients in physical activities and gym based sessions and gives them the opportunity, upon completion of the course, to become a Level 2 qualified Fitness Instructor. This qualification will allow students to become a member of the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs). Students will train in the College’s state-of-theart gym as part of the programme. There is a practical kit which students will be expected to purchase and wear to all sessions. Entry Requirements A range of D/3 grades at GCSE. Students who do not have English and Maths at grade C/4 or above will be required to take a qualification in these alongside.

This nine hour course provides essential training in the principles of preparing food in hygienic conditions and minimising the risks of food poisoning. It is necessary for anyone working with food. At the end of the course students sit a short multiple choice test to gain the Level 2 Award in Food Safety. Students must attend the whole course.

Health and Social Care EDEXCEL Diploma Levels 2 & 3 This qualification is accredited with a minimum of 46 credits. It is a part time work-based qualification intended for those working in the health and social care workforce. It also serves as the required qualification for registration and regulatory requirements in the social care sector. You will be required to do a minimum of two days voluntary or paid work in a care setting.

Counselling Skills NCFE Level 2 Certificate This course is an ideal qualification for those working in an environment where interpersonal skills are needed and who wish to consolidate their skills and knowledge. Successful candidates may consider going on to the Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies.

Certificate in Counselling Skills and Theory Level 3 This nationally recognised course is validated by the NCFE, and although it is not a licence to practise as a counsellor it provides a progression route to a Diploma in Counselling. Candidates must produce evidence that they have attained a Level 2 Counselling Skills qualification, with a minimum of 40 hours training. This is an ideal qualification for those seeking to enhance their employment skills through the use of counselling skills (e.g. nurses/social workers). It could also be useful to those seeking a career change, to those offering help on a one-to-one basis and to those wishing to progress onto further training as a professional counsellor. It would also be useful to those wishing to consolidate their skills and knowledge in a counselling context.

AAT Certificate in Accounting Level 2 Accounting roles are exceptionally diverse and deliver quality career opportunities. This course will prepare you for junior and entry level accounting roles by giving you a solid foundation in finance administration, covering areas such as double entry bookkeeping, basic costing principles and using accounting software. AAT assessments are practical computer based assessments (CBAs) designed to reflect real life tasks. Five of the units above are assessed through CBAs, with 'working effectively in finance' being assessed through coursework. You will be expected to join and pay for membership of the professional body, the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT). The cost of this will be confirmed when you enrol on the course. If you successfully complete the course you could progress onto the AAT Advanced Diploma in Accounting.

AAT Advanced Diploma in Accounting Level 4 Entry to the AAT Level 4 requires successful completion of the AAT Level 3. On this course you will cover higher accounting tasks including drafting financial statements, managing budgets and evaluating financial performance. You will also undertake specialist units such as business tax, personal tax or external auditing based on the expertise of your tutor. On successful completion, you achieve professional AAT Accountant status and can apply for full AAT membership.

English GCSE* If you haven’t managed to achieve your grade C, you will re-sit your English Language GCSE. This one-year course prepares students for the GCSE examination that will take place in June 2020. GCSE English is a crucial qualification needed for a very wide range of jobs and more advanced courses. You will study a wide range of texts from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, including literature and literacy non-fiction as well as other writing such as reviews and journalism. Paper 1: Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing Paper 2: Writers’ Viewpoints and Perspectives Non-examination Assessment: Spoken Language

Maths GCSE* This one-year course prepares students for the GCSE examination at Foundation Level, grades 1 to 5. This is the standard GCSE Maths, which many jobs require at grade 5. Assessment is by 3 examinations in May/June. Students may opt to take the Higher tier examination, but will need to complete extra independent work on Higher topics outside of the classroom as the 1 to 5 topics are the main focus. The course covers topics such as number work, algebra, shape, space and measure, and data handling. At the beginning of the course you will need a scientific calculator and you will be required to buy the recommended course materials. Internet access is required to complete homework tasks. Mock assessment tests will be given during the year to assess your progress.

Art and Design Foundation Diploma Level 3/4 This exciting, intensive one-year, full time course prepares you for studying Art and Design at Higher Education. The course is diagnostic in its first stage, during which you will develop your research and visual recording skills into a broad range of both two and three dimensional options. You will be introduced to a variety of Art disciplines, including Fine Art, Fashion and Textiles, Photography, Printmaking, 3D Design and Sculpture, Graphic Design and Illustration, Digital Media, and Contextual studies. Your own work will be enhanced with visits to relevant galleries and exhibitions. You will be taught by a range of practising designers and artists who will support and help you to develop your portfolio in your chosen specialist pathway in preparation for HE application or employment. Stage 1: Exploration Through a structured diagnostic programme you identify and extend your existing skills, strengths and interests. You will develop both practical and critical thinking abilities, helping you to make an informed choice for your specialist study.

If you are 19+ and wish to join one of these courses, you may be required to pay fees which cover tuition/exam fees/board registration. In addition, a College deposit of ÂŁ40 is required if undertaking a daytime or evening qualification course to provide access to the learning resources from the College and LRC. A ÂŁ10 charge for postage of certificates is also payable. Please note the deposit and certificate charge has to be paid to secure the place. This is not refundable if you decide not to join the College or you leave early.

fees & support How do I enrol and pay? Enrolments and payments are made via our website – www.bexhillcollege.ac.uk/part-time Payment can be made by debit/credit card. If you aren't able to enrol online, want to pay by cash or cheque or would like more information, there are enrolment evenings on Monday 9th September 2019, Monday 13th January 2020 and Monday 20th April 2020, between 5pm and 6pm. No enrolment will be processed without the appropriate fee and/or College deposit. Please DO NOT send cash through the post. Paying your fees Recreational courses: Course fees must be paid in full at least two weeks prior to the start of the course. Please note we are unable to offer concessions for recreational courses. You may also incur additional costs for materials or ingredients which need to be used as part of the course e.g. cookery courses and oil painting. Part-time employment courses: The fee covers teaching, tutorials and assessment/exam fees for the course if appropriate. If you are enrolled on a full time qualification course, your deposit of £40 plus the £10 certificate postage charge must be paid on acceptance of the offer of a place. Course fees must be paid in full at least two weeks before the course begins. The fees quoted apply to ‘home’ and ‘EU’ students and may be subject to change. Recreational courses do not pay a College deposit or certificate postage fee. Am I entitled to help with fees? Fee Remission: If you’re aged between 19 and 23 and in receipt of Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) or Employment Support Allowance (ESA) in the Work Related Activity Group, you may be eligible for help with the tuition fees on some employment courses. Please note, students claiming fee remission must enrol in person with proof of their eligibility. This should be the latest letter detailing your eligibility to JSA or the appropriate ESA. If you are aged between 19 and 23 and have not previously achieved a full Level 2 or 3 qualification, you may be entitled to free tuition. For more information on these entitlements, please contact the College. Refunds for all courses: If your chosen course does not run, we will refund your payment in full. If you choose to withdraw from a course in the first week, we will refund your payment, but a deduction of £12 will be made for administration, plus a charge for the week you have attended. You must inform us of your intention to withdraw within 5 working days of starting the course.


Refunds will not normally be offered after the first week of a course, unless there are exceptional circumstances. You must apply for the refund in writing to the Principal. If the College has to close due to adverse weather conditions, power failure or fire, alternative arrangements will be offered where possible. What facilities and support are available to me? If you are following an employment course and have paid your College deposit, you can have access to the College’s Learning Resource Centre during normal College hours and until 7.00pm on Mondays. You must have a Student ID card to access this facility. Extra study support is available for students on exam based courses who have difficulties coping with the demands of their course. Details can be obtained from Student Services. Information on Adult Bursaries is available from Student Services on 01424 214545 ext 1163. What other important information should I know about? Changes to Details: Although we have made every effort to ensure that the information in this booklet is accurate, details are subject to change and the College reserves the right to make such changes as are deemed necessary.

Course Viability: If the number of students on your course falls below a certain level (usually 6 students) the College reserves the right to make changes to the offer to enable the course to run where possible. These changes may include: • reducing the total hours of the course • reducing the number of weeks • amalgamating with another group. As a last resort we reserve the right to close the course.

FAQ Where are the classes held?

Can I pay for my course in instalments?

Most classes are held at Bexhill College on Penland Road.

Unfortunately, there is no facility to pay by instalment. Please see Fees and Support for more information about how to pay online. Or if you aren't able to pay online you can pay by cash or cheque at our enrolment evening. See page 38 for details.

Is there parking available? Yes, there is parking available. During the day, a barrier system is in operation. Upon arrival to the car park, please buzz Reception and state the reason for your visit. Once through the barrier, you will have 15 minutes to park and register your vehicle’s licence plate at Reception to avoid a £100 fine. Can I join a course that has already started? Providing there is still a place available, you are able to join onto a course within the first 2 sessions. You can find out about specific courses by calling Admissions on 01424 214545 ext 1166.

Can I have a refund if I decide not to continue on my chosen course? If you chose to withdraw from a course in the first week, we will refund your payment minus a £12 administration fee. Refunds will not normally be offered after the first week, unless there are exceptional circumstances.
