Patek Phillipe obtained the first patent for the legendary Travel Time mechanism in 1959. As soon as the local time hour hand is moved forwards or backwards with the buttons on the case, an isolator separates the time zone mechanism from the watch’s movement. This prevents any impairment of the oscillating weight, and the watch continues to run with its accustomed precision – thanks to a complex mechanism comprising 294 individual components. They can be used to record intermediate times without interrupting the overall time measurement. Under the enamel dial, this watch features a CHR 29-535 PS calibre developed and manufactured in Patek Philippeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own studios. Previously, only the version with a perpetual calendar had been manufactured, but now this model has been released as a pure split-second chronograph, much to the delight of purists. Like its exterior, it blends tradition and innovation. This precision work of art is enclosed in a platinum case and features a beguiling mix of gentle curves and contours which flow into one another harmoniously. Under the reference number 5905P, Patek Philippe is presenting a new platinum version which will delight lovers of complicated watches. The contours of the platinum case are coordinated formally and there are no random features to irritate the eye. The circular bezel and central section flow seamlessly into the gentle curvature of the wrist strap. As the curves of the start/stop button, the crown and the reset button are positioned on an arc that is exactly parallel with the central section, all the elements seem to be made from one piece. P O R T U G I E S E R A N N UA L C A L E N DA R The Annual Calendar (finally!) closes the gap between the perpetual calendar and the simple date display. The new IWC-manufactured 52850 calibre has two barrels that keep the function supplied with ample energy and still has enough left for a seven-day power reserve. Located at 12 o’clock, the annual calendar shows the month, date and day in three separate windows. Its switching mechanism automatically takes into account the different lengths of the individual months, and only requires manual correction at the end of February. The American order in which the date is shown is an homage to F.A. Jones, IWC’s founder. Poetic classics Cartier adds the perfect finishing touch to its watches in the form of a crown. What is more, it is a very special crown, one that in a sense is the key to happiness. And it carries a sapphire which radiates calm. Cartier can also look back on a long history in the design of innovative crowns, and the new Clé de Cartier fits into this tradition perfectly. In formal terms, the design of the crown is based on a key (“clé”). Functionally, it facilitates a completely new way of setting the date and time which is reminiscent of how old watches were wound up with a key. To ensure that all the displays were clearly visible and legible everywhere in the workshop, they were arranged in a decentralized fashion around the dial. On the Chopard-developed L.U.C Regulator, the displays are arranged in exactly the same way. The hour display is situated not at 12 o’clock, but at 3 o’clock. This technique meant that the seconds hand did not advance in a linear fashion but rather made a small jump every second, giving extremely accurate measurements that were soon to lead to the birth of the chronograph. Long forgotten, the Independent Seconds have now been rediscovered by Jaquet Droz. The Grande Seconde Deadbeat uses a balance-spring made of silicon, a material that is unaffected by magnetic fields or changes in temperature and pressure, and thus ensures exceptionally accurate timekeeping. N O R T H F L AG In the 1950s, the members of the British North Greenland Expedition wore Tudor Oyster Prince watches on their wrists while carrying out a series of experiments in the most hostile conditions imaginable on Earth. Created to reflect on the outside the high level of technology contained in the movement, the external parts of the new Tudor North Flag were designed as a combination of stainless steel and ceramic. The North Flag and the new Pelagos models are the first to be fitted with manufacture movements developed and produced by Tudor. The new MT5621 calibre which drives the North Flag model creates an astonishing degree of independence. Thanks to its power reserve of approximately 70 hours, the wearer can, for example, take the watch off on Friday evening and put it on again on Monday morning without having to wind it. The self-winding movement is bidirectional and was the first Tudor model to be certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC). P E L AG O S The Tudor Pelagus doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just stand for an adventurous maritime lifestyle. It is also one of the most sophisticated mechanical diving watches on the market.
