BEYOND CLOTHING - INTRODUCTION | 5
ON ADVENTURE As we set out on the long drive from Salt Lake City to the small town of Moab, I couldn’t help but think about how far we have come in such a short time. A team of ten people spending the week exploring the red topography of one of the nation’s most iconic parks. Our goal was to tell a much wider audience about the culture and values of BEYOND. The team was armed with a metric ton of outdoor gear and the most varied list of imaging equipment I have ever seen in one place. This ranged from small drones, a 600mm Cannon Lens mounted on DSLRs, five different camera brands, to a small host of analog tools. My request was that a quarter of the book you’re reading to be shot on 35mm film stock. This request is an homage to all of our creative predecessors, but also a nod to the “art behind the art.” The act of shooting a catalog allows for the team to get away from the spreadsheets, email, and cell phones: the chains that bind many of us to daily life. Without these much needed breaks, life is a simple drill of wash, rinse, and repeat. For me, the challenge and adversity of hiking into some remote area and creating images with amazing people wearing rugged products proves to be special—regenerative. For me, this is the type of adventure that I want to enjoy. The miles continued to pass by as I really started to think about the concept of adventure. Why we seek it and it’s purpose. At BEYOND, we build tools instead of clothing. Tools that act as a backstage pass to the extreme areas of the globe. People use these tools to explore regions of the world, challenge themselves, and return home to share the story. It is clear to me that the definition of your adventure is not up to us to define. Rather, we allow you to define it through action. Our place is to celebrate your vision and experiences. I think living the world through our customers’ eyes might be the most fulfilling part of building BEYOND. This process allows us to continually grow as we learn from you. The vans pulled into the ranch house that we would call home that week, the team’s energy was high and we were ready to explore. The week was amazing and Moab proved to be beautiful and challenging. I hope you enjoy these images and the spirit with which the BEYOND team brings them. I hope that you will share your next adventure with us so we can enjoy it and learn a small part of your world. Finally, I know that if you trust our clothing system and follow the training BEYOND provides, you will come home safely and start to prepare for the next adventure. Respectfully, Richard (Rick) Elder President
6 | SYSTEM BUILDER
SYSTEM BUILDER The AXIOS™ clothing system is the most complete, technical survival clothing system ever developed. Our 8 layer system uses specifically developed fabrics to provide protection while ensuring optimized human performance in the worst climatic conditions. The AXIOS system breathes incredibly well, dries very fast, and is designed to work with the users and their gear down to -70°F. Our system builder is designed to provide a quick reference for necessary layers for each climate. To get the most out of the system builder, it’s important to understand that AXIOS is based on some basic premises to ensure performance and survivability for a variety of environments: •
Our primary concern is to keep someone alive and warm, with moisture transport and ability to add/remove insulation in 5 layers or less.
•
Our system builder illustrates the absolute minimum needed or baseline. Our system is designed to keep you alive for the environments it’s rated for! It must be worn correctly and used as intended.
•
You’re going to get wet. The key is for your body’s heat to push out moisture; ideally via dynamic exertion, from your core into the farthest pieces of your system. This type of regulation makes you ‘survivable’.

8 | SYSTEM BUILDER - THE CLIMATES
THE CLIMATES Designed to keep you mission capable from -70°F and above, the Axios™ clothing system can be worn in a variety of ways and customized to the users needs and dynamic environmental conditions. If you’re unfamiliar with your environment, spend some time researching recent and historic seasonal weather patterns. Some environments are rather consistent, while others can be susceptible to dramatic shifts in weather and temperature. Serious factors that should be considered when determining a temperature range are temperature swings throughout the day, elevation gain, wind chill factor, and moisture in the air. The 6 temperature ranges that we’ve based the Axios Layering System on are as follows: Polar, Extreme Cold, Cold-Dry, Cold-Wet, Transitional Temperate, and Hot.
Key Variables Wind Speed Personal Efficiency Exposure Duration Design Consideration Shell Moisture Transport Water Resistance/Waterproofness Seam Moisture Management Membrane Durability (if used) Temperature Management (through movement) Climate Transition Face Fabric Durability Load Pressure/Moisture Resistance Bulk/Compressibility Mobility Restriction Temp Range Required Seam Stack Extremity Protection (Boot, Headwear & Glove Systems) Equipment Integration Storage (Food, Water & Equipment) Packs/Load Carriage Skis/Snowshoes/Crampons Harnesses/Head Protection Sleep Systems Shelter Systems Hydration Systems Gaiters

POLAR INSULATION
Our A8 layers offer warmth in polar environments. These layers are built with GORE® WINDSTOPPER® and Climashield® APEX Insulation. The APEX insulation regulates temperature, retains heat when wet, and dries much faster than down, while the outer GORE® layer provides a totally windproof, yet extremely breathable membrane. We mapped the WINDSTOPPER® in the highest areas of exposure to combat convective heat loss. The torso has a higher level of breatheability to ensure moisture management in areas of high perspiration.

OUR EXPLORERS
EXPLORER - JOSH TYLER | 71
JOSH TYLER I am Josh Tyler, professional fighter and adventurer. For me, fighting is the purest expression of competition and the ultimate test of one’s will against another. But there are other challenges that beckon. Much like fighting, nature can be a formidable foe and an unforgiving teacher. The appeal of both, is that the lessons learned are what forms us into something greater. I have always been captivated by the idea of rugged individualism. The notion that a man should possess the skills and qualities to fend for himself in any and all situations. Inspired by the writings of Jack London and Ernest Hemingway, this led me to seek ways of challenging myself outside of the cage, into the wild. Along with skills and knowledge, one must have the proper equipment when pushing outside of their comfort zone. Never content to settle for the status quo, I choose to go Beyond.

72 | EXPLORER - MARIO STANLEY
MARIO STANLEY I’m Mario Stanley, and for as long as I can remember, I have sought the outdoors and I have been a competitive athlete. As someone who has spent most of their life in and around concrete jungles, the very smell of the wilderness quickens my heartbeat and sharpens my senses.
DOB 07-06-88
Rock climbing has proven to be the most disciplining experience in my life, causing me to not just look at what I want to climb but how I plan to complete the route. This involves mental, physical and logistical preparation. In my years of climbing adventures, I have come to learn that being comfortable in any and every environment will allow you to go far beyond your expectations— so choose wisely when it’s your time to adventure. I trust Beyond Clothing systems for my adventures.

EXPLORER - BERT SORIN | 73
BERT SORIN I am Bert Sorin, and besides a competitive athlete for over two decades in the strength sports, I am a lifelong, avid outdoorsman. I long for the freedom of choice and consequence that the wild provides. Nothing is more true and unyielding than mother nature, with her mood swings and tough love. Out there, decisions matter. Decisions on route direction, gear selection, preparation of skill set; all are factors that make or break an expedition. Wrong decisions can turn an adventure into a nightmare. I have trained my whole life through physical and mental exercise to give myself the best chance for enjoyment in the outdoors, and for survival. To not only survive, but to thrive. My gear selection is a key component in my preparation and ability to write my own story. I chose to go Beyond.
