How bats make decisions by Bojan Schianetz Very early in my life, I learnt that decision matrices don’t work so overly well. I was just twelve years old and had managed to save up enough money to buy my first bicycle. After looking around in the shops, I couldn’t make up my mind. One part of me was drawn to a sporty looking race bike, but it did not seem near as comfortable and practical as the solid and flash “High Riser” bike. I carefully evaluated the pros and cons, but still wasn’t sure, which bike I should buy. Finally, I came up with this brilliant idea of drawing a table with a column for the “High Riser” bike and one for the race bike. Along the left hand side I listed all the factors that I believed to be important for this decision (like durability, reliability, range of use, comfort and so on). And then I gave each of the factors a mark out of a scale from 1 to 10. Added all up, by which the “High Riser” bike won the race. Happily, I went and got the “High Riser” bike. Not long afterwards, I found out however that

At that time I thought, I just had forgotten the fun factor, and I should have WEEKLY E-NEWS given weights to each of the factors. Over time, I repeated this exercise with often sophisticated weighted decision matrices, but with not so overly much more success.
In these dynamically changing times, we often will have to make important decisions, without really knowing all the factors. More importantly, we rarely know how these factors interact, and what influences them, and as a result we feel ‘as blind as a bat’ when it comes to predicting future events and possible outcomes of our choices. If you are in such a situation right now, try a different approach, which is not simply based on rational thinking, but also engages your intuitive mind. Your intuitive mind is much better suited to handle complex information, while our rational mind is a linear thinker and is easily overwhelmed by too many factors and complexity. But how can we access this potential of the intuitive mind for decision making?

Especially, when we do have to make an important decision, such as which job to take, or which house to buy, our rational mind works overtime. Listening to this inner chatterbox of pros and cons can be extremely confusing and tiring: “House A is closer to schools and shops, but further away from my work; it is bigger, but I don’t like the kitchen; it might be more difficult to sell afterwards, ...” The intuitive mind communicates primarily through our feelings, and with pictures. Messages from the intuitive mind can also feel like insights. They usually enter our consciousness when we finally relax and stop being absorbed by our thoughts and inner chatter. Therefore, in order to be able to access the knowledge of our intuition, it is important to allow ourselves to relax. Whatever works for you is good. Some people like meditation while others prefer walking on the beach or watching a sunset. I myself sometimes like to go for a quick run and on other times, I prefer to practice TaiChi. In a relaxed state, you can then start asking yourself: how would it feel to move into this house or to start this new job. Try to picture yourself walking through the house or sitting on your new desk. And then, observe what feelings come up: does it feel light, heavy, closed in, happy or tense? How does your body feel? Any tightness in your chest, throat, or belly? To get some additional information, you can also try the following exercise: Close your eyes and imagine yourself walking down a track until you come to a junction. Imagine that there is a junction with three arms. The arm on the left symbolizes possibility 1 (e.g. House A), the arm in the middle possibility 2 (House B), and the right

HEALTHY LIVING arm an alternative possibility, which you are not yet aware of (e.g. a house you haven’t seen yet). Now walk down the track to your left. How does the track look? Is it sandy, smooth? Is it wide or narrow? Are there any obstacles? Is it comfortable to walk on? Are you alone? Are there people with you? Is it crowded? Are the people you see friendly, happy, or grumpy and nervous? Where does the track lead? For instance, does it wind up a hill towards a nice look out or does it go downhill into a deep jungle. Whatever you see is okay. There is no right or wrong. Just play with the images that come up. Then go back and do the same exercises for the two other tracks. I sometimes get great clues and insights from this exercise. It would be great to hear your experiences with it. But remember, there are really no wrong choices, just learning experiences. And, what can we learn from bats in terms of decision making? Well, they might be blind but they developed a remarkable navigation system called echolocation. It is like a constant questioning: Is the direction I am going still right or do I need to change course? Bats have big ears. They learnt to listen to the right signals. They are masters in course correction and they never take time to argue about having headed in the wrong direction initially. They simply change course and they always arrive at their destiny.

It drives many of the decisions you make about exercise and eating, new weight loss programmes, cosmetic procedures and it determines how you choose between that black skirt and the white pants. Isn’t that what feeling beautiful is about – having passion for life and the energy to act out that passion? On the biology of beauty, I’m going to share with you some of the basics tools that we can utilize to help us make better choices and actions to be your most beautiful energetic self.
Your Energy and Hormones in Crisis We know what happens when there’s an energy crisis. Think of a citywide blackout. One small problem can trigger a domino effect. That’s what happens when you wake up and realize you can’t maintain your energy system. You turn to stimulants, sugar and coffee to just keep going. Once your resiliency is gone, you’re prone to being invaded by bacteria, virus or fungi. Even the ensuing insomnia and stress that come as a result of those invasions can cause adrenal fatigue. This creates a vicious cycle where smaller problems can progressively cause larger challenges until you experience a complete health shutdown. These kinds of massive energy drops are ultimately an energy crisis in your body that play out in many different ways, from having low energy, digestive problems, hair loss, hormonal imbalance, insomnia to high pain in muscles or joints. It will certainly make you feel as beautiful as a wart-dotted hairless cat. So what starts the process that steals your energy and vitality? What sets up the dominos and what causes your first domino to fall? Our body’s natural inclination is to heal, as long as we provide the right

Research indicates shell-forming, virus-sized, coral-like organisms are causative agents in calcification. They are approximately 1/100 the size of normal bacteria.
