Welcome and notices The Very Reverend Jerry Lepine, Dean of Bradford We stand Silence In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening Hymn Lo, he comes with clouds descending, once for favoured sinners slain; thousand, thousand saints attending swell the triumph of his train: Alleluia! God appears on earth to reign. Every eye shall now behold him robed in dreadful majesty; those who set at naught and sold him, pierced and nailed him to the Tree, deeply wailing, shall the true Messiah see. Those dear tokens of his passion still his dazzling body bears, cause of endless exultation to his ransomed worshippers: with what rapture gaze we on those glorious scars! Yea, Amen, let all adore thee, high on thine eternal throne; Saviour take the power and glory, claim the kingdom for thine own: Alleluia! Thou shalt reign, and thou alone. Words: Charles Wesley (1707-1788) and John Cennick (1718-1755) Tune: Helmsley; melody noted by Thomas Olivers (1725-1799); CP 31

Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness. Be not wroth very sore, O Lord, neither remember iniquity for ever: thy holy cities are a wilderness, Sion is a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation: our holy and beautiful house, where our fathers praised thee. Drop down… RORATE CAELI, Mode i

New Testament Reading

Romans 13.11-end

read by Jane Tarver

11

Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; 12the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armour of light; 13let us live honourably as in the day, not in revelling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarrelling and jealousy. 14 Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence We stand

Gospel Reading

Matthew 24.36-44

36

‘But about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 37For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, 39and they knew nothing until the flood came and swept them all away, so too will be the coming of the Son of Man. 40Then two will be in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. 41Two women will be grinding meal together; one will be taken and one will be left. 42Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. 43But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. 44Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour. This is the Gospel of the Lord Praise to you, O Christ After an opening prayer, we sit

Sermon The Right Reverend Jonathan Gibbs, Bishop of Huddersfield Silence

The Liturgy of Initiation

around the font. We all stand and face west.

Candidates to be baptised and confirmed: Delia Christina Creed Hossein Salehi Siahpirani Mohammad Hossein Ghodoomizadeh Catherine Grant Candidates to be confirmed: Richard Langford - from the parish of St Mary the Virgin at Elland, Halifax The candidates for baptism are presented and the Bishop asks the candidates for baptism Do you wish to be baptised? I do. The candidates for confirmation, who have previously been baptised, are presented and the Bishop asks the candidates Have you been baptised in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit? I have. 7

The Bishop asks all the candidates Are you ready with your own mouth and from your own heart to affirm your faith in Jesus Christ? I am. The Bishop addresses the whole congregation. Faith is the gift of God to his people. In baptism the Lord is adding to our number those whom he is calling. People of God, will you welcome these candidates and uphold them in their new life in Christ? With the help of God, we will.

The Decision The Bishop addresses the candidates for baptism and confirmation In baptism, God calls us out of darkness into his marvellous light. To follow Christ means dying to sin and rising to new life with him. Therefore I ask: Do you reject the devil and all rebellion against God? I reject them. Do you renounce the deceit and corruption of evil? I renounce them. Do you repent of the sins that separate us from God and neighbour? I repent of them. Do you turn to Christ as Saviour? I turn to Christ. Do you submit to Christ as Lord? I submit to Christ. Do you come to Christ, the way, the truth and the life? I come to Christ.

Signing with the Cross The Bishop makes the sign of the cross, in oil, on the forehead of all the candidates for baptism Name, Christ claims you for his own. Receive the sign of his cross. Do not be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ cruciďŹ ed. Fight valiantly as a disciple of Christ against sin, the world and the devil, and remain faithful to Christ to the end of your life. 8

May almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness, restore in you the image of his glory, and lead you in the light and obedience of Christ. Amen. Water is poured into the font

Prayer over the Water Praise God who made heaven and earth, who keeps his promise for ever. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. We thank you, almighty God, for the gift of water to sustain, refresh and cleanse all life. Over water the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through water you led the children of Israel from slavery in Egypt to freedom in the Promised Land. In water your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us from the death of sin to newness of life. We thank you, Father, for the water of baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore, in joyful obedience to your Son, we baptise into his fellowship those who come to him in faith. Now sanctify this water that, by the power of your Holy Spirit, they may be cleansed from sin and born again. Renewed in your image, may they walk by the light of faith and continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Lord; to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be all honour and glory, now and for ever. Amen

Profession of Faith Brothers and sisters, I ask you to profess, together with these candidates, the faith of the Church. Do you believe and trust in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

9

Do you believe and trust in his Son Jesus Christ? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was cruciďŹ ed, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Baptism The Bishop addresses the candidates Candidates, is this your faith? This is my faith. The Bishop baptises each candidate in turn Name, I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. After all have been baptised May God, who has received you by baptism into his Church, pour upon you the riches of his grace, that within the company of Christ’s pilgrim people you may daily be renewed by his anointing Spirit, and come to the inheritance of the saints in glory. Amen.

10

The Bishop sprinkles the water of baptism over Richard Almighty God, we thank you for our fellowship in the household of faith with all who have been baptised in your name. Keep us faithful to our baptism, and so make us ready for that day when the whole creation shall be made perfect in your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. We return to our seats and the candidates for confirmation gather at the front of the nave

Confirmation Those to be confirmed, with their sponsor, stand before the Bishop Our help is in the name of the Lord who has made heaven and earth. Blessed be the name of the Lord now and for ever. Amen. Almighty and ever-living God, you have given these your servants new birth in baptism by water and the Spirit, and have forgiven them all their sins. Let your Holy Spirit rest upon them: the Spirit of wisdom and understanding; the Spirit of counsel and inward strength; the Spirit of knowledge and true godliness; and let their delight be in the fear of the Lord. Amen. The Bishop comes to each candidate in turn, as the congregation pray silently. Name, God has called you by name and made you his own. The Bishop anoints and lays his hands on the head of each candidate and prays, Confirm, O Lord, your servant with your Holy Spirit. Amen. When all are confirmed Defend, O Lord, these your servants with your heavenly grace that they may continue yours for ever, and daily increase in your Holy Spirit more and more until they come to your everlasting kingdom. Amen. 11

Prayers of Intercession

led by David Worsley

As a royal priesthood, let us pray to the Father through Christ who ever lives to intercede for us. Reveal your kingdom among the nations; may peace abound and justice flourish. Especially for … Your name be hallowed. Your kingdom come. Send down upon us the gift of the Spirit and renew your Church with power from on high. Especially for … Your name be hallowed. Your kingdom come. Deliver the oppressed, strengthen the weak, heal and restore your creation. Especially for … Your name be hallowed. Your kingdom come. Rejoicing in the fellowship of the Church on earth, we join our prayers with all the saints in glory. Your name be hallowed. Your kingdom come. We stand

Welcome of the newly baptised, and confirmed There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism: by one Spirit we are all baptised into one body. We welcome you into the fellowship of faith; We are children of the same heavenly Father; We welcome you. The congregation greets the newly baptised and confirmed

Giving and Receiving Peace In the tender mercy of our God, the dayspring from on high shall break upon us, to give light to those who dwell in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. Alleluia. We offer one another a sign of God’s peace 12

Offertory Hymn During this hymn our gifts are collected and presented O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel, that mourns in lonely exile here, until the Son of God appear: Rejoice! rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel. O come, thou Rod of Jesse, free thine own from Satan’s tyranny; from depths of hell thy people save, and give them victory o’er the grave: O come, thou Dayspring, come and cheer our spirits by thine advent here; disperse the gloomy clouds of night, and death’s dark shadows put to flight: O come, thou Key of David, come, and open wide our heavenly home; make safe the way that leads on high, and close the path to misery: O come, O come, thou Lord of Might, who to thy tribes on Sinai’s height, in ancient times didst give the law in cloud and majesty and awe: Words: Latin Advent Antiphons, tr. J. M. Neale (1818-1866) Tune: Veni Emmanuel; Melody ‘adapted from French Missal’ by Thomas Helmore (1811-1890); CP 32

The Prayer of Thanksgiving

Additional Eucharistic Prayer One

The Lord be with you and also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God It is right to give thanks and praise. It is always right to give you thanks, God our Creator, loving and faithful, holy and strong. You made us and the whole universe, and filled your world with life. 13

You sent your Son to live among us, Jesus our Saviour, Mary’s child. He suffered on the cross; he died to save us from our sins; he rose in glory from the dead. You send your Spirit to bring new life to the world, and clothe us with power from on high. And so we join the angels to celebrate and sing: Choir

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory: Glory be to thee, O Lord most High. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Father, on the night before he died, Jesus shared a meal with his friends. He took the bread, and thanked you. He broke it, and gave it to them, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this to remember me. After the meal, Jesus took the cup of wine. He thanked you, and gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you. This is my blood, the new promise of God’s unfailing love. Do this to remember me. Jesus Christ has died. Jesus Christ has died. Jesus Christ is risen. Jesus Christ is risen. Jesus Christ will come again. Jesus Christ will come again. Father, as we bring this bread and wine, and remember his death and resurrection, send your Holy Spirit, that we who share these gifts may be fed by Christ’s body and his blood.

14

Pour your Spirit on us that we may love one another, work for the healing of the earth, and share the good news of Jesus, as we wait for his coming in glory. For honour and praise belong to you, Father, with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit: one God, for ever and ever. Amen. We sit Silence

The Lord’s Prayer Looking for the coming of his kingdom, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name; your kingdom come; your will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

Giving of Communion Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Blessed are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed.

15

As the Clergy and Eucharistic Ministers receive communion the choir sings: O Lamb of God that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace.

Stewards will direct you to the sanctuary rail All who are baptised are welcome to receive communion Gluten free wafers and non-alcoholic wine is available, please indicate at the rail

Communion Motet Like as the hart desireth the waterbrooks, so longeth my soul after thee, O God. My soul is athirst for God, yea, even for the living God. When shall I come to appear before the presence of God? My tears have been my meat day and night, while they daily say unto me, “Where is now thy God?” Words: Psalm 42 vv.1-3 Music: Herbert Howells (1892-1983)

We remain seated

Communion Hymn Let all mortal flesh keep silence and with fear and trembling stand; ponder nothing earthly-minded, for with blessing in his hand, Christ our God to earth descendeth, our full homage to demand. King of kings, yet born of Mary, as of old on earth he stood, Lord of lords, in human vesture – in the body and the blood – he will give to all the faithful his own self for heavenly food. Rank on rank the host of heaven spreads its vanguard on the way, as the Light of light descendeth from the realms of endless day, that the powers of hell may vanish as the darkness clears away.

16

At his feet the six-winged seraph; cherubim with sleepless eye veil their faces to the Presence, as with ceaseless voice they cry, Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, Lord most high. Words: Liturgy of St James, tr. Gerald Moultrie (1829-1885) Tune: Picardy; French carol melody harmonised by Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958); CP 309

Prayer after Communion O Lord our God, make us watchful and keep us faithful as we await the coming of your Son our Lord; that, when he shall appear, he may not find us sleeping in sin but active in his service and joyful in his praise; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. We stand

Closing Hymn All for Jesus, all for Jesus, this our song shall ever be; for we have no hope, nor Saviour, if we have not hope in thee. All for Jesus, thou wilt give us strength to serve thee, hour by hour; none can move us from thy presence while we trust thy love and power. All for Jesus, at thine altar thou wilt give us sweet content; there, dear Lord, we shall receive thee in the solemn sacrament. All for Jesus, thou hast loved us; all for Jesus, thou hast died; all for Jesus, thou art with us; all for Jesus crucified. All for Jesus, all for Jesus, this the Church’s song must be, till, at last, we all are gathered one in love and one in thee. Words: W.J. Sparrow-Simpson (1859-1952) Tune: All for Jesus; John Stainer (1840-1901); CP 277 17

Blessing May God the Father, judge all-merciful, make us worthy of a place in his kingdom. Amen. May God the Son, coming among us in power, reveal in our midst the promise of his glory. Amen. May God the Holy Spirit make us steadfast in faith, joyful in hope and constant in love. Amen. And the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.

Giving of a Lighted Candle The Bishop gives each of the candidates a candle, lighted from the Easter Candle God has delivered us from the dominion of darkness and has given us a place with the saints in light. You have received the light of Christ; walk in this light all the days of your life. Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father.
