Voluntary

Prelude in G, Lento – Charles Villiers Stanford Op. 105, No. 3

Welcome The Reverend Canon Mandy Coutts, Canon for Mission and Pastoral Development We stand. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Hymn When morning gilds the skies, my heart awaking cries, may Jesus Christ be praised: alike at work and prayer to Jesus I repair; may Jesus Christ be praised. Whene’er the sweet church bell peals over hill and dell, may Jesus Christ be praised: O hark to what it sings, as joyously it rings, may Jesus Christ be praised. My tongue shall never tire of chanting with the choir, may Jesus Christ be praised: this song of sacred joy, it never seems to cloy, may Jesus Christ be praised. Does sadness fill my mind? A solace here I find, may Jesus Christ be praised: or fades my earthly bliss? My comfort still is this, may Jesus Christ be praised. The night becomes as day, when from the heart we say, may Jesus Christ be praised: the powers of darkness fear, when this sweet chant they hear, may Jesus Christ be praised. 3

Be this, while life is mine, my canticle divine, may Jesus Christ be praised: be this the eternal song through ages all along, may Jesus Christ be praised! German, 19th century, tr. Edward Caswall (1814-1878) LAUDES DOMINI, CP 619

The Greeting The Lord be with you and also with you. We remain standing.

Prayers of Penitence God so loved the world that he gave his only son Jesus Christ to save us from our sins, to be our advocate in heaven, and to bring us to eternal life. Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, firmly resolved to keep God’s commandments and to live in love and peace with all. Silence Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen. Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. We remain standing as the choir sings

Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. Collect The president introduces a period of silent prayer. O God, the protector of all who trust in you, without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy: increase and multiply upon us your mercy; that with you as our ruler and guide we may so pass through things temporal that we lose not our hold on things eternal; grant this, heavenly Father, for our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. We sit.

First Reading

Colossians 1.1-14

read by Jenny Price

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, 2

To the saints and faithful brothers and sisters in Christ in Colossae:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father. 3

In our prayers for you we always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, 5because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. You have heard of this hope before in the word of the truth, the gospel 6that has come to you. Just as it is bearing fruit and growing in the whole world, so it has been bearing fruit among yourselves from the day you heard it and truly comprehended the grace of God. 7 This you learned from Epaphras, our beloved fellow-servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf, 8and he has made known to us your love in the Spirit. 4

9

For this reason, since the day we heard it, we have not ceased praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10so that you may lead lives worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, as you bear fruit in every good work and as you grow in the knowledge of God. 11 May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully 12giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. 13He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence

Gospel Acclamation We stand.

Gospel Reading

Luke 10.25-37

read by the Reverend Canon Philip Gray, Assistant Precentor

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. A lawyer stood up to test Jesus. ‘Teacher,’ he said, ‘what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ 26He said to him, ‘What is written in the law? What do you read there?’ 27He answered, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbour as yourself.’ 28And he said to him, ‘You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live.’ 29

But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, ‘And who is my neighbour?’ 30Jesus replied, ‘A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. 31Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33But a Samaritan while travelling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. 34He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, “Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.” 36Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?’ 37He said, ‘The one who showed him mercy.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Go and do likewise.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

Sermon

After an opening prayer, we sit. The Very Reverend Andy Bowerman, Dean of Bradford We stand.

7

The Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. We kneel or sit.

Prayers of Intercession

led by Alex McLelland

In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father. After each section this, or another, response is used: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. At the end: Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. We stand.

Giving and Receiving Peace Christ is our peace. He has reconciled us to God in one body by the cross. We meet in his name and share his peace. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. We offer one another a sign of peace, and offer our gifts to God. 8

The Table is set with bread and wine.

Hymn Immortal Love for ever full, for ever flowing free, for ever shared, for ever whole, a never-ebbing sea. Our outward lips confess the name all other names above; love only knoweth whence it came and comprehendeth love. We may not climb the heavenly steeps to bring the Lord Christ down; in vain we search the lowest deeps, for him no depths can drown: But warm, sweet, tender, even yet a present help is he; and faith has still its Olivet, and love its Galilee. The healing of his seamless dress is by our beds of pain; we touch him in life’s throng and press, and we are whole again. Through him the first fond prayers are said our lips of childhood frame; the last low whispers of our dead are burdened with his name. Alone, O Love ineffable, thy saving name is given; to turn aside from thee is hell, to walk with thee is heaven. John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892) BISHOPTHORPE, CP 475

Prayer at the Preparation of the Table Blessed be God, by whose grace creation is renewed, by whose love heaven is opened, by whose mercy we offer our sacrifice of praise. Blessed be God for ever.

Great Thanksgiving Prayer

It is indeed right, it is our duty and our joy, at all times and in all places to give you thanks and praise, holy Father, heavenly King, almighty and eternal God, through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. For he is your living Word; through him you have created all things from the beginning, and formed us in your own image. Through him you have freed us from the slavery of sin, giving him to be born of a woman and to die upon the cross; you raised him from the dead and exalted him to your right hand on high. Through him you have sent upon us your holy and life-giving Spirit, and made us a people for your own possession. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing: Choir

Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

10

Accept our praises, heavenly Father, through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, and as we follow his example and obey his command, grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit these gifts of bread and wine may be to us his body and his blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Therefore, heavenly Father, we remember his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross; we proclaim his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; we look for the coming of your kingdom, and with this bread and this cup we make the memorial of Christ your Son our Lord. Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again. Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of thanks and praise, and as we eat and drink these holy gifts in the presence of your divine majesty, renew us by your Spirit, inspire us with your love and unite us in the body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

11

Through him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours for ever and ever. Amen. We kneel or sit. Silence

The Lord’s Prayer As our Saviour taught us, so we pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

Giving of Communion Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving.

12

As the ministers receive communion the choir sings Choir

Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis. Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi: dona nobis pacem. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: grant us peace.

Please indicate if you would like a gluten-free wafer.

Communion Motet O salutaris hostia quae caeli pandis ostium, bella premunt hostilia: da robur, fer auxilium. O saving victim who opens the gate of heaven, hostile wars press on us: give strength, bring aid. Giaochino Rossini (1792-1868)

Prayer after Communion Eternal God, comfort of the afflicted and healer of the broken, you have fed us at the table of life and hope: teach us the ways of gentleness and peace, that all the world may acknowledge the kingdom of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hymn Thy kingdom come, O God, thy rule, O Christ, begin; break with thine iron rod the tyrannies of sin. Where is thy reign of peace and purity and love? When shall all hatred cease, as in the realms above? When comes the promised time that war shall be no more, and lust, oppression, crime shall flee thy face before? We pray thee, Lord, arise, and come in thy great might; revive our longing eyes, which languish for thy sight. 13

Men scorn thy sacred name, and wolves devour thy fold; by many deeds of shame we learn that love grows cold. O’er lands both near and far thick darkness broodeth yet: arise, O morning star, arise, and never set. Lewis Hensley (1824-1905) ST CECILIA, CP 607

The Blessing The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.

The Dismissal Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen. Voluntary

Postlude in D minor – Charles Villiers Stanford Op. 105, No. 6

SUDAN LINK PRESENTS: Sudan Evening – In conversation … this Monday 11 July at 7.30pm in the cathedral. Are you interested to learn more about the current situation in Sudan? If so come along to this special evening. The evening will also be accessible via Zoom using the following link: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/88447095351?pwd=WnN1NVF0VGpwNmw5cXRFeDNacUgvdz09 Prayer for Peace Monday 11 July – Remembering Srebrenica 7.00pm at the Khidmat Centre, Spencer Road, BD7 2EU. As the war continues we pray for peace and an end to this terrible destruction of human life. So many people around the world depend on the wheat and olive oil grown in Ukraine, so we pray for a ceasefire to allow safe passage of ships and export of food from Odessa. 11 July this year is the 27th anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre. The Serbian army overran a UN designated safe haven. Boys and men were taken prisoner and more than 9000 were killed. For more information refer to https://srebrenica.org.uk/whathappened/ We pray for peace and reconciliation, and an end to violence against people because of their race or religion. The Photographic Exhibition by our Photographer in Residence, Kate Abbey, entitled ‘As we journey together: an exploration of Faith in Bradford’ is still on display in the nave. It’s a new type of exhibition for us so please do have a look – there are some amazing photographs and details are also on the screen at the West End. On Thursday 14 July the Cathedrals Cycle Relay is back, and we have a team heading out to York Minster. If you’d like to join in, please book your free place at cathedralsrelay.eventbrite.co.uk, or join us from 11.00am to wave off the cyclists! The Fair Trade Stall is open after the service this morning. We welcome you to browse and buy – Traidcraft’s popular ground coffee is back in stock, plus there is a choice of three new flavours of biscuit. How do I make a donation to Bradford Cathedral?
