The Eucharist Epiphany 3 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
24 January 2021 10.30
Welcome to Bradford Cathedral The seat of the Bishop of Leeds and a Centre of Worship and Mission One of three Cathedrals in the Anglican Diocese of Leeds
Our purpose is serving Christ and transforming lives through welcome, worship and encounter.
❖ Please join in at home, and in the Cathedral, by saying or singing the words in bold type in this order of service ❖ For those at home, unable to receive Holy Communion: The term ‘Spiritual Communion’ has been used historically to describe the means of grace by which a person, prevented for some serious reason from sharing in a celebration of the Eucharist, nonetheless shares in the communion of Jesus Christ. The Church of which we are members is not defined by the walls of a building but by the Body of Christ of which we are members. In making our communion spiritually, we are joining with Christians everywhere to be nourished by the one who tells us, ‘I am the Bread of Life’. ❖ Please note that this service will be broadcast live on YouTube and be available for the following two weeks. ❖ This week’s flowers are given in memory of Joanna Mary Lawson (nee Walker) by Brian Walker and family. 21st January would have been her 60th birthday. ❖ Members of Bradford Cathedral Choir lead this morning’s worship. The choral settings are the Gloria and Sanctus from T.L. de Victoria’s Missa Simile est Regnum Coelorum and the Agnus Dei from T.L. de Victoria’s Missa Dominicalis.

Voluntary: Adagio from Sonata I, Op.65 by F. Mendelssohn
Welcome and notices The Reverend Canon Mandy Coutts, Canon for Mission and Pastoral Development We stand Silence In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Hymn Christ is the world’s true light, its captain of salvation, the daystar clear and bright of every land and nation; new life, new hope awakes, where peoples own his sway: freedom her bondage breaks, and night is turned to day. In Christ all races meet, their ancient feuds forgetting, the whole round world complete, from sunrise to its setting: when Christ is throned as Lord, lands shall forsake their fear, to ploughshare beat the sword, to pruning-hook the spear. One Lord, in one great name unite us all who own thee; cast out our pride and shame that hinder to enthrone thee; the world has waited long, has travailed long in pain; to heal its ancient wrong, come, Prince of peace, and reign! The Greeting The Lord be with you and also with you. We remain standing
Prayers of Penitence We have come together as God’s family to pray for the recovery of the unity of Christ’s church and for the renewal of our common life. The Lord is full of gentleness and compassion. In penitence and faith let us ask for forgiveness of our sins. Silence Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you and against one another, and thought, and word, and deed. We are truly sorry for our pride, and for our lack of faith, of understanding and of love. We repent of our narrow mindedness, of our bitterness Anna prejudices. Pardon and forgivers, save us and renew us, that we may delight in your will and walk in your way; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

New Testament Reading
Revelation 19.6-10
read by Joshua Pollard
Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the sound of many waters and like the sound of mighty thunder-peals, crying out, ‘Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. 7 Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready; 8 to her it has been granted to be clothed with fine linen, bright and pure’— for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints. 9
And the angel said to me, ‘Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.’ And he said to me, ‘These are true words of God.’ 10Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, ‘You must not do that! I am a fellow-servant with you and your comrades who hold the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.’ This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gospel Reading
John 2.1-11
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, ‘They have no wine.’ 4And Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.’ 5His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’ 6Now standing there were six stone water-jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7Jesus said to them, ‘Fill the jars with water.’ And they filled them up to the brim. 8He said to them, ‘Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward.’ So they took it. 9When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom 10and said to him, ‘Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now.’ 11Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. After an opening prayer, we sit
Sermon The Reverend Kerry Tankard, Chair of Yorkshire West Methodist District Voluntary: Improvisation We stand
The Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. 7
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. We sit

Giving and Receiving Peace Christ is our hope; we give him glory for the great grace by which up on the cross he stretched out his hands and love to us all. By that same grace may he come, our risen saviour, into every gesture of unity and fellowship which we make towards one another, and make the peace we share his peace. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. We offer one another an appropriate sign of God’s peace The Table is set with bread and wine Our offerings are received: www.bradfordcathedral.org
Offertory Motet 1
O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands: serve the Lord with gladness, and come before his presence with a song. 2 Be ye sure that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. 3 O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and speak good of his Name. 4 For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting: and his truth endureth from generation to generation. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Words: Jubilate Deo; Psalm 100 Music: B. Britten (1913-1976)
Prayer at the Preparation of the Table Gracious God, accept the offering of your Church, the hearts of your people joined in praise and thanksgiving, in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. 9
Amen.
Great Thanksgiving Prayer The Lord is here. God’s spirit is with us. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. Father, all-powerful and ever-living God, we do well always and everywhere to give you thanks through Jesus Christ our Lord. By him, your only Son, who restored to us peace through the blood of his cross, you willed to reconcile all creatures. In him you have led us to the knowledge of your truth, that bound together by 1 faith and one baptism we might become his body. Through him you have given your Holy Spirit to all peoples to work marvels by innumerable gifts and an abundant variety of graces. Gathering us together in unity, your spirit dwells in the hearts of all your children, filling the whole church with his presence and guiding it with wisdom from above. And so, with steadfast love, we proclaim your glory and join with hosts of angels in their triumphant hymn of praise: Choir
Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt cĂŚli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis.
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.
Accept our praises, heavenly Father, through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, and as we follow his example and obey his command, grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit these gifts of bread and wine may be to us his body and his blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. 10
In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Therefore, heavenly Father, we remember his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross; we proclaim his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; we look for the coming of your kingdom, and with this bread and this cup we make the memorial of Christ your Son our Lord. Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again. Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of thanks and praise, and as we eat and drink these holy gifts in the presence of your divine majesty, renew us by your Spirit, inspire us with your love and unite us in the body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours for ever and ever. Amen. We sit Silence

The Lord’s Prayer Believing the promises of God, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
Giving of Communion The body of Christ given for you. Amen. The blood of Christ shed for you. Amen. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us peace.

If you are at home and unable to receive Communion, you may wish to use the following prayer, after Richard of Chichester: Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits you have given me, for all the pains and insults you have borne for me. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother, may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen. Silence
Prayer after Communion Eternal God and father whose son at supper prayed that his disciples might be one, as he is one with you: draw us closer to him, that in common love and obedience to you we may be united to one another in the fellowship of the one Spirit, that the world may believe that he is Lord, to your eternal glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hymn Hope of our calling: hope through courage won by those who dared to share all Christ had done. Saints of today, Christ’s banner now unfurled, will bring his gospel to a waiting world. Hope of our calling: hope with strength empowered, inspired by all that we have seen and heard; this call is ours, for we are chosen too, to live for God in all we say and do. Hope of our calling: hope with grace outpoured, from death’s despair the gift of life restored; our call to serve, to wash each other’s feet, to bring Christ’s healing touch to all we meet. Hope of our calling: hope by faith made bold to sow God’s righteousness throughout the world; bring peace from conflict, fruitfulness from weeds, the kingdom’s harvest from the kingdom’s seeds. Hope of our calling: Spirit-filled, unbound, old joys remembered and new purpose found, our call refreshed by sacrament and word, we go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Words: Ally Barrett (b.1975) Tune: WOODLANDS; SP 157 (CP 362)
The Dismissal The Lord Jesus Christ, son of the living God, teach you to walk in his way more trustfully, to accept his truth more faithfully, and to share his life more lovingly; that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may come as one family to the Kingdom of the Father. And the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen.
