The Eucharist

Trinity 11 and baptism of Dwani Ranjan

15 August 2021 10.30

Welcome to Bradford Cathedral The seat of the Bishop of Leeds and a Centre of Worship and Mission One of three Cathedrals in the Anglican Diocese of Leeds

Our purpose is serving Christ and transforming lives through welcome, worship and encounter.

❖ Please join in at home, and in the Cathedral, by saying or singing the words in bold type in this order of service ❖ We apologise that the Hearing Enhancement Loop is not currently operational. ❖ This service will be broadcast on YouTube and available for the following two weeks. The hymn-singing is also being recorded today for broadcast on Premier Christian Radio. ❖ There will be no collection taken during the service but you are invited to make a donation to the Cathedral, as part of your worship, using the donations box by the door, or online, through the Cathedral website. ❖ For those at home, unable to receive Holy Communion: The term ‘Spiritual Communion’ has been used historically to describe the means of grace by which a person, prevented for some serious reason from sharing in a celebration of the Eucharist, nonetheless shares in the communion of Jesus Christ. The Church of which we are members is not defined by the walls of a building but by the Body of Christ of which we are members. In making our communion spiritually, we are joining with Christians everywhere to be nourished by the one who tells us, ‘I am the Bread of Life’. ❖ Members of the Cathedral Choir leads this morning’s worship. The choral settings are the Gloria from James’ MacMillan’s Mass of Blessed John Henry Newman and the Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei from Matyás Seiber’s Missa Brevis. Can you help us raise £60,000 for the Reimagining our Ministry Appeal to enable us to purchase and install a permanent livestreaming infrastructure, broadcast quality cameras and associated technology? Income in the past week: ..................... £1,000.00 Total to date: ........................................ £32,252.87 Thank you very much. You can donate online, by BACS, by Cheque or by Cash. If donating to this appeal via the website, please select 'Appeal-Reimagining Our Ministry' in the 'Fund' drop down box under the amount.

Greeting and Welcome The Reverend Paul Maybury, Acting Dean We stand Silence In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Hymn O praise ye the Lord! Praise him in the height; rejoice in his word, ye angels of light; ye heavens adore him by whom ye were made, and worship before him, in brightness arrayed. O praise ye the Lord! Praise him upon earth, in tuneful accord, ye sons of new birth; praise him who hath brought you his grace from above, praise him who hath taught you to sing of his love. O praise ye the Lord, all things that give sound; each jubilant chord re-echo around; loud organs, his glory forth tell in deep tone, and, sweet harp, the story of what he hath done. O praise ye the Lord! Thanksgiving and song to him be outpoured all ages along: for love in creation, for heaven restored, for grace of salvation, O praise ye the Lord! Amen. Words: H.W. Baker (1821-1877) Tune: LAUDATE DOMINUM (PARRY); CP 543

Prayers of Penitence God so loved the world that he gave his only son Jesus Christ to save us from our sins, to be our advocate in heaven, and to bring us to eternal life. Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, firmly resolved to keep God’s commandments and to live in love and peace with all. Silence Almighty God, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen. Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gloria in Excelsis Cantor:

James MacMillan – Mass of Blessed John Henry Newman

Glory to God in the highest,

The president introduces a period of silent prayer

Prayer of the day O God, you declare your almighty power most chiefly in showing mercy and pity: mercifully grant to us such a measure of your grace, that we, running the way of your commandments, may receive your gracious promises, and be made partakers of your heavenly treasure; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, Amen. New Testament Reading

Ephesians 5.15-20

read by June Kelley

Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, 16making the most of the time, because the days are evil. 17So do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, 19as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, 20giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence

Gospel Reading

John 6.51-58

read by the Reverend Paul Booth, Cathedral Chaplain

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, O Lord I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.’ 52

The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, ‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat?’ 53So Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; 55for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. 56Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. 57Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. 58This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live for ever.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. After an opening prayer, we sit

Sermon The Reverend Canon Philip Gray, Acting Canon Precentor At the conclusion of the sermon, the organist plays an improvisation

The Baptism of Dwani Ranjan We stand and turn to the font

Presentation Faith is the gift of God to his people. In baptism the Lord is adding to our number those whom he is calling. People of God, will you welcome Dwani and uphold her in her new life in Christ? With the help of God, we will. Parents and godparents, the Church receives Dwani with joy. Today we are trusting God for her growth in faith. Will you pray for her, draw her by your example into the community of faith, and walk with her in the way of Christ? With the help of God, we will. In baptism Dwani begins her journey in faith. You speak for her today. Will you care for her, and help her to take her place within the life and worship of Christ’s church? With the help of God, we will.

Decision The minister addresses the parents In baptism, God calls us out of darkness into his marvellous light. To follow Christ means dying to sin and rising to new life with him. Therefore, I ask: Do you reject the devil and all rebellion against God? I reject them. Do you renounce the deceit and corruption of evil? I renounce them. Do you repent of the sins that separate us from God and neighbour? I repent of them. Do you turn to Christ as Saviour? I turn to Christ. Do you submit to Christ as Lord? I submit to Christ. Do you come to Christ, the way, the truth and the life? I come to Christ.

8

The minister marks Dwani with the sign of the cross, in oil Christ claims you for his own. Receive the sign of his cross. Do not be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ crucified. Fight valiantly as a disciple of Christ against sin, the world and the devil, and remain faithful to Christ to the end of your life. May almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness, restore in you the image of his glory, and lead you in the light and obedience of Christ.

Prayer over the water Praise God who made heaven and earth, who keeps his promise for ever. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. Almighty God, whose son Jesus Christ was baptized in the river Jordan: we thank you for the gift of water to cleanse and revive us. We thank you that through the waters of the Red Sea you led your people out of slavery to freedom in the promised land. We thank you that through the deep waters of death you brought your Son, and raised him to life in triumph. Bless this water, that your servant who is washed in it may be made one with Christ in his death and in his resurrection, to be cleansed and delivered from all sin. Send your Holy Spirit upon Dwani. Bring her to new birth in the household of faith, and raise her with Christ to full and eternal life; for all might, majesty, authority, and power are yours, now and forever. Amen.

9

Profession of Faith My sisters and brothers, I ask you to profess, together with this family, the faith of the Church. Do you believe and trust in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe and trust in his Son Jesus Christ? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Baptism I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. May God, who has received you by baptism into his Church, pour upon you the riches of his grace, that within the company of Christ’s pilgrim people you may be renewed daily by his anointing Spirit, and come to the inheritance of the saints in glory. Amen.

10

Welcome of the Baptized There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism: by one Spirit we are all baptized into one body. We welcome Dwani into the fellowship of faith; we are children of the same heavenly Father; we welcome you.

Giving of a Lit Candle A candle is lit from the Easter candle and given to Dwani God has delivered us from the dominion of darkness and has given us a place with the saints in light. You have received the light of Christ; walk in this light all the days of your life. Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father. We sit

Prayers of Intercession Led by John Chuter In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father. After each section this, or an alternative, response is used: Lord in your mercy hear our prayer. Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

We stand

Giving and Receiving Peace We are all one in Christ Jesus, We belong to him through faith, heirs of the promise of the Spirit of peace. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. We offer one another a sign of peace and offer our gifts to God. The Table is set with bread and wine Our offerings are received: www.bradfordcathedral.org/support-us/donate

Hymn Alleluia, sing to Jesus! his the sceptre, his the throne; alleluia, his the triumph, his the victory alone: hark, the songs of peaceful Sion thunder like a mighty flood; Jesus out of every nation hath redeemed us by his blood. Alleluia, not as orphans are we left in sorrow now; alleluia, he is near us, faith believes, nor questions how: though the cloud from sight received him, when the forty days were o’er, shall our hearts forget his promise, ‘I am with you evermore’? Alleluia, bread of angels, thou on earth our food, our stay; alleluia, here the sinful flee to thee from day to day: Intercessor, Friend of sinners, earth’s Redeemer, plead for me, where the songs of all the sinless sweep across the crystal sea.

12

Alleluia, King eternal, thee the Lord of lords we own; alleluia, born of Mary, earth thy footstool, heaven thy throne: thou within the veil hast entered, robed in flesh, our great High Priest; thou on earth both Priest and Victim in the eucharistic feast. Words: William Chatterton Dix (1837-1898) Tune: HYFRYDOL; CP 278

Great Thanksgiving Prayer The Lord is here. God’s Spirit is with us. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. It is always right to give you thanks, God our Creator, loving and faithful, holy and strong. You made us and the whole universe, and filled your world with life. You sent your Son to live among us, Jesus our Saviour, Mary’s child. He suffered on the cross; he died to save us from our sins; he rose in glory from the dead. You send your Spirit to bring new life to the world, and clothe us with power from on high. And so we join the angels to celebrate and sing: Choir

Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt cæli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis.

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. 13

On the night before he died, Jesus shared a meal with his friends. He took the bread, and thanked you. He broke it, and gave it to them, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this to remember me. After the meal, Jesus took the cup of wine. He thanked you, and gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you. This is my blood, the new promise of God’s unfailing love. Do this to remember me. Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. As we bring this bread and wine, and remember his death and resurrection, send your Holy Spirit, that we who share these gifts may be fed by Christ’s body and his blood. Pour your Spirit on us that we may love one another, work for the healing of the earth, and share the good news of Jesus, as we wait for his coming in glory. For honour and praise belong to you, with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit: one God, for ever and ever. Amen. We sit Silence

14

The Lord’s Prayer Being made one by the power of the Spirit, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray: Our Father in heaven hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

Giving of Communion The body of Christ given for you. Amen. The blood of Christ shed for you. Amen. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us peace.

Please stand in your place if you would like to receive the bread of Communion Please indicate if you’d like a gluten-free wafer

If you would like to make an Act of Spiritual Communion, you may wish to use the following prayer, after Richard of Chichester: Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits you have given me, for all the pains and insults you have borne for me. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother, may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen.

Communion Motet Ave verum Corpus, natum ex Maria Virgine, vere passum, immolatum in cruce pro homine, cujus latus perforatum unda fluxit sanguine: esto nobis praegustatum in mortis examine. O dulcis, O pie, O Jesu Fili Mariae, miserere mei. Amen. Hail, real body, born of the Virgin Mary, who truly suffered, sacrificed on the cross for man, whose pierced side flowed with real blood; be unto us the foretaste in the trial of death. O merciful, O holy, O sweet Jesu, son of Mary. Amen. Music: W. Byrd (1540-1623)

We remain seated

Prayer after Communion Lord of all mercy, we your faithful people have celebrated that one true sacrifice which takes away our sins and brings pardon and peace: by our communion keep us firm on the foundation of the gospel and preserve us from all sin; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

We stand

Hymn O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder consider all the works thy hand hath made, I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder, thy power throughout the universe displayed; Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee, how great thou art, how great thou art! Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee, how great thou art, how great thou art! When through the woods and forest glades I wander, and hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees; when I look down from lofty mountain grandeur, and hear the brook, and feel the gentle breeze; Then sings my soul… And when I think that God, his Son not sparing, sent him to die – I scarce can take it in: that on the cross, my burden gladly bearing, he bled and died to take away my sin; Then sings my soul… When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation and take me home – what joy shall fill my heart! Then shall I bow in humble adoration, and there proclaim, my God, how great thou art! Then sings my soul… Words: Russian Hymn; tr. Stuart K. Hine (1899-1989) Tune: HOW GREAT THOU ART; CP 262

Dismissal The God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing; and the blessing of God almighty the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen. Organ voluntary: Finale from Symphonie No.1, Op.14 by L. Vierne The concluding organ voluntary is offered as part of our worship 17
