The seat of the Bishop of Leeds and a Centre of Worship and Mission One of three Cathedrals – Bradford, Ripon and Wakefield - in the Anglican Diocese of Leeds Our purpose is serving Christ and transforming lives through welcome, worship and encounter. ❖ A very warm welcome to Bradford Cathedral for this service, particularly if you are visiting or with us for the first time. We hope you will stay and enjoy refreshments with us after the service, which will be served at the West End of the Cathedral. ❖ Please join in with saying or singing the words in bold type in this order of service, and sit or stand as directed if you are able. Large print copies are available from the stewards at the main door. ❖ As part of our work to keep you safe and healthy, we are keeping some windows and doors open to make sure the Cathedral is well ventilated, which may mean parts of the nave are cold. We advise you, where you can, to dress warmly when attending a service. ❖ Today’s Eucharist is sung by the Girls’ Choir and Lay Clerks of the Cathedral. The choral setting is the Mass No. 2 in G major by Franz Schubert (1797-1898). ❖ If you need to, please sit down at any point in the service, even if the instruction is to stand. It is more important for you to be comfortable and safe. ❖ We will be pleased to help you if you wish to receive a gluten-free wafer. Please speak with one of the stewards at the main door before the start of the service. ❖ Please be aware that today’s service is being livestreamed to YouTube and will be available online for two weeks. If you do not want to appear on the livestream please speak to one of the stewards who will direct you to seats not covered by the cameras. ❖ Please check that you have switched off your mobile phone. ❖ Lavatories, including disabled facilities, are available towards the back of church. ❖ The hearing loop has now been replaced. Welcome The Reverend Canon Paul Maybury, Acting Dean We stand. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Hymn Thou whose almighty word chaos and darkness heard, and took their flight; hear us, we humbly pray, and where the gospel-day sheds not its glorious ray, let there be light. h
Thou who didst come to bring on thy redeeming wing healing and sight, health to the sick in mind, sight to the inly blind, O now to all mankind let there be light. Spirit of truth and love, life-giving, holy Dove, speed forth thy flight; move on the water’s face, bearing the lamp of grace, and in earth’s darkest place let there be light. Holy and blessèd Three, glorious Trinity, Wisdom, Love, Might; boundless as ocean’s tide, rolling in fullest pride; through the earth far and wide let there be light. John Marriott (1780-1825) MOSCOW, CP 267 3
The Greeting The Lord be with you and also with you. We remain standing.
Prayer of Preparation Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Prayers of Penitence God so loved the world that he gave his only Son Jesus Christ to save us from our sins, to be our advocate in heaven, and to bring us to eternal life. Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, firmly resolved to keep God’s commandments and to live in love and peace with all. Silence Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen.
4
Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. We remain standing as the choir sings
Gloria Choir
Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son Jesu Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy, thou only art the Lord, thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
Collect of the Day The president introduces a period of silent prayer. Almighty God, you have created the heavens and the earth and made us in your own image: teach us to discern your hand in all your works and your likeness in all your children; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit reigns supreme over all things, now and for ever. Amen. We sit.
First Reading
Revelation 4 read by Stephen Holder
After this I looked, and there in heaven a door stood open! And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet, said, ‘Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.’ 2At once I was in the spirit, and there in heaven stood a throne, with one seated on the throne! 3And the one seated there looks like jasper and cornelian, and around the throne is a rainbow that looks like an emerald. 4Around the throne are twenty-four thrones, and seated on the thrones are twenty-four elders, dressed in white robes, with golden crowns on their heads. 5Coming from the throne are flashes of lightning, and rumblings and peals of thunder, and in front of the throne burn seven flaming torches, which are the seven 5
spirits of God; 6and in front of the throne there is something like a sea of glass, like crystal. Around the throne, and on each side of the throne, are four living creatures, full of eyes in front and behind: 7the first living creature like a lion, the second living creature like an ox, the third living creature with a face like a human face, and the fourth living creature like a flying eagle. 8And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and inside. Day and night without ceasing they sing, ‘Holy, holy, holy, the Lord God the Almighty, who was and is and is to come.’ 9
And whenever the living creatures give glory and honour and thanks to the one who is seated on the throne, who lives for ever and ever, 10the twenty-four elders fall before the one who is seated on the throne and worship the one who lives for ever and ever; they cast their crowns before the throne, singing, 11
‘You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honour and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.’ This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence

Gospel Reading
Luke 8.22-25 read by the Reverend Rod Anderson, Cathedral Chaplain
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. One day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, ‘Let us go across to the other side of the lake.’ So they put out, 23and while they were sailing he fell asleep. A gale swept down on the lake, and the boat was filling with water, and they were in danger. 24They went to him and woke him up, shouting, ‘Master, Master, we are perishing!’ And he woke up and rebuked the wind and the raging waves; they ceased, and there was a calm. 25He said to them, ‘Where is your faith?’ They were afraid and amazed, and said to one another, ‘Who then is this, that he commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him?’ This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.
Sermon
After an opening prayer, we sit. The Reverend Canon Philip Gray, Acting Precentor A brief Organ Interlude. We stand.
The Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. We kneel or sit.

Prayers of Intercession
led by Una Barry
In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father. After each section this, or another, response is used: Lord in your mercy hear our prayer. At the end: Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. We stand.
Giving and Receiving Peace Christ is our peace. He has reconciled us to God in one body by the cross. We meet in his name and share his peace. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. We offer one another a sign of peace, and offer our gifts to God. The Table is set with bread and wine.
Hymn Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation; O my soul, praise him, for he is thy health and salvation: all ye who hear, now to his temple draw near, joining in glad adoration. Praise to the Lord, who o’er all things so wondrously reigneth, shieldeth thee gently from harm, or when fainting sustaineth: hast thou not seen how thy heart’s wishes have been granted in what he ordaineth? Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee; surely his goodness and mercy shall daily attend thee: ponder anew what the Almighty can do if to the end he befriend thee. 8
Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him! All that has life and breath, come now with praises before him! Let the Amen sound from his people again: gladly for aye we adore him! Joachim Neander (1650-1680), tr. Catherine Winkworth (1827-1878) LOBE DEN HERRN, CP 558
Prayer at the Preparation of the Table Blessed be God, by whose grace creation is renewed, by whose love heaven is opened, by whose mercy we offer our sacrifice of praise. Blessed be God for ever.
Great Thanksgiving Prayer
You are worthy of our thanks and praise, Lord God of truth, for by the breath of your mouth you have spoken your word, and all things have come into being. You fashioned us in your image and placed us in the garden of your delight. Though we chose the path of rebellion you would not abandon your own. Again and again you drew us into your covenant of grace. You gave your people the law and taught us by your prophets to look for your reign of justice, mercy and peace. As we watch for the signs of your kingdom on earth, we echo the song of the angels in heaven, evermore praising you and singing: 9
Choir Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Lord God, you are the most holy one, enthroned in splendour and light, yet in the coming of your Son Jesus Christ you reveal the power of your love made perfect in our human weakness. Embracing our humanity, Jesus showed us the way of salvation; loving us to the end, he gave himself to death for us; dying for his own, he set us free from the bonds of sin, that we might rise and reign with him in glory. On the night he gave up himself for us all he took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Therefore we proclaim the death that he suffered on the cross, we celebrate his resurrection, his bursting from the tomb, we rejoice that he reigns at your right hand on high and we long for his coming in glory. As we recall the one, perfect sacrifice of our redemption, Father, by your Holy Spirit let these gifts of your creation be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; form us into the likeness of Christ and make us a perfect offering in your sight. Look with favour on your people and in your mercy hear the cry of our hearts. Bless the earth, heal the sick, 10
let the oppressed go free and fill your Church with power from on high. Gather your people from the ends of the earth to feast with all your saints at the table in your kingdom, where the new creation is brought to perfection in Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen. We kneel or sit. Silence
The Lord’s Prayer As our Saviour taught us, so we pray Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.
Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
Giving of Communion Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. 11
Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. As the ministers receive communion the choir sings Choir
O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace.
Please stand in your place if you would like to receive the bread of communion. Please indicate if you would like a gluten-free wafer. When the communion administrant says The Body of Christ we respond Amen.
Communion Motet Tantum ergo Sacramentum Veneremur cernui: Et antiquum documentum Novo cedat ritui: Praestet fides supplementum Sensuum defectui. Genitori, Genitoque Laus et iubilatio, Salus, honor, virtus quoque Sit et benedictio: Procedenti ab utroque Compar sit laudatio. Amen. Down in adoration falling, Lo! the sacred Host we hail, Lo! oe’r ancient forms departing Newer rites of grace prevail; Faith for all defects supplying, Where the feeble senses fail. To the everlasting Father, And the Son Who reigns on high With the Holy Spirit proceeding Forth from each eternally, Be salvation, honour, blessing, Might and endless majesty. Amen. Alexandre Déodat de Séverac (1872-1921)

Hymn Let all creation dance in energies sublime, as order turns with chance, unfolding space and time for nature’s art in glory grows, and newly shows God’s mind and heart. God’s breath each force unfurls, igniting from a spark expanding starry swirls, with whirlpools dense and dark. Though moon and sun seem mindless things, each orbit sings: your will be done. Our own amazing earth, with sunlight, cloud and storms and life’s abundant growth in lovely shapes and forms, is made for praise, a fragile whole, and from its soul heaven’s music plays. Lift heart and soul and voice: in Christ all praises meet and nature shall rejoice as all is made complete. In hope be strong. All life befriend and kindly tend creation’s song. Brian Wren (b. 1936) DARWALL’S 148th, SP 247
Prayer after Communion God our creator, by your gift the tree of life was set at the heart of the earthly paradise, and the bread of life at the heart of your Church: may we who have been nourished at your table on earth be transformed by the glory of the Saviour’s cross and enjoy the delights of eternity; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 13
Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen. We stand
The Blessing The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.
The Dismissal Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen. Voluntary
Sonata No. 2 i) Pomposo, ii) Allegro molto – Edward Elgar
