The Eucharist
THE FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT
6 March 2022 10.30
Welcome to Bradford Cathedral The seat of the Bishop of Leeds and a Centre of Worship and Mission One of three Cathedrals – Bradford, Ripon and Wakefield – in the Anglican Diocese of Leeds Our purpose is serving Christ and transforming lives through welcome, worship and encounter. A very warm welcome to Bradford Cathedral for this service, particularly if you are visiting or with us for the first time. We hope you will stay and enjoy refreshments with us after the service, which will be served at the West End of the Cathedral. Please join in with saying or singing the words in bold type in this order of service, and sit or stand as directed if you are able. Large print copies are available from the stewards at the main door. As part of our work to keep you safe and healthy, we are keeping some windows and doors open to make sure the Cathedral is well ventilated, which may mean parts of the nave are cold. We advise you, where you can, to dress warmly when attending a service. Today’s Eucharist is sung by the Boys’ Choir and Lay Clerks of the Cathedral. The choral setting is the Missa brevis by Neil Cox (b. 1955). If you need to, please sit down at any point in the service, even if the instruction is to stand. It is more important for you to be comfortable and safe. We will be pleased to help you if you wish to receive a gluten-free wafer. Please speak with one of the stewards at the main door before the start of the service. Please be aware that today’s service is being livestreamed to YouTube and will be available online for two weeks. If you do not want to appear on the livestream please speak to one of the stewards who will direct you to seats not covered by the cameras. Please check that you have switched off your mobile phone. Lavatories, including disabled facilities, are available towards the back of church. The hearing loop has now been replaced. If you use a hearing aid, please turn it to the T position. In the event of an emergency, please remain calm and seated. Stewards will direct you out of the Cathedral.

Voluntary
Sonata No. 3 in A, ii) Andante tranquillo – Felix Mendelssohn Op. 65
Welcome The Reverend Canon Mandy Coutts, Canon for Mission and Pastoral Development We stand. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Hymn From ashes to the living font your Church must journey, Lord, baptised in grace, in grace renewed, by your most holy word. Through fasting, prayer, and charity your voice speaks deep within, returning us to ways of truth and turning us from sin. From desert to the mountaintop in Christ our way we see, so, tempered by temptation’s might, we might transfigured be. For thirsting hearts let waters flow, our fainting souls revive; and at the well your waters give – our everlasting life. From ashes to the living font your Church must journey still; through cross and tomb to Easter joy, in Spirit-fire fulfilled. Alan J. Hommerding (b. 1956) CRIMOND, SP 37
The Greeting The Lord be with you and also with you. We remain standing.

Prayers of Penitence
Choir
To thee, Redeemer, on thy throne of glory: lift we our weeping eyes in holy pleadings: listen, O Jesu, to our supplications. Hear us, O Lord, have mercy upon us: for we have sinned against thee.
Silence Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. Let us confess our sins remembering before God the times when we have fallen from temptation into sin. Choir
Kyrie Eleison, Christe Eleison. Kyrie Eleison. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
Silence Father eternal, giver of light and grace, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour, in what we have thought, in what we have said and done, through ignorance, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We have wounded your love and marred your image in us. We are sorry and ashamed, and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past; and lead us out from darkness to walk as children of light. Amen.
4
Almighty God, who in Jesus Christ has given us a kingdom that cannot be destroyed, forgive you your sins, open your eyes to God's truth, strengthen you to do God's will and give you the joy of his kingdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Collect of the Day The president introduces a period of silent prayer. Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ fasted forty days in the wilderness, and was tempted as we are, yet without sin: give us grace to discipline ourselves in obedience to your Spirit; and, as you know our weakness, so may we know your power to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. We sit.
First Reading
Deuteronomy 26:1-11 read by John Chuter OBE
Moses spoke to the people, saying: When you have come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess, and you possess it, and settle in it, 2you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from the land that the Lord your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket and go to the place that the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for his name. 3You shall go to the priest who is in office at that time, and say to him, ‘Today I declare to the Lord your God that I have come into the land that the Lord swore to our ancestors to give us.’ 4 When the priest takes the basket from your hand and sets it down before the altar of the Lord your God, 5you shall make this response before the Lord your God: ‘A wandering Aramean was my ancestor; he went down into Egypt and lived there as an alien, few in number, and there he became a great nation, mighty and populous. 6 When the Egyptians treated us harshly and afflicted us, by imposing hard labour on us, 7we cried to the Lord, the God of our ancestors; the Lord heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. 8The Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with a terrifying display of power, and with signs and wonders; 9and he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. 10So now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground that you, O Lord, have given me.’ You shall set it down before the Lord your God 5
and bow down before the Lord your God. 11Then you, together with the Levites and the aliens who reside among you, shall celebrate with all the bounty that the Lord your God has given to you and to your house. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence
Gospel Acclamation We stand.
Choir
Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory. Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory. The Lord is a great God, O that today you would listen to his voice. Harden not your hearts. Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory.
Gospel Reading
Luke 4.1-13
read by the Reverend Rod Anderson, Cathedral Chaplain
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, 2where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished. 3The devil said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a loaf of bread.’ 4Jesus answered him, ‘It is written, “One does not live by bread alone.” ’ 5
Then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6And the devil said to him, ‘To you I will give their glory and all this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please. 7If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.’ 8Jesus answered him, ‘It is written, “Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.” ’ 9
Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10for it is written, “He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you”, 11 and 6
“On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.” ’ 12 Jesus answered him, ‘It is said, “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.” ’ 13
When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune time. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.
Sermon
After an opening prayer, we sit. The Reverend Canon Paul Maybury, Acting Dean A brief Organ Interlude. We stand.
The Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. We kneel or sit.
Prayers of Intercession
led by Nora Whitham
In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father. After each section this, or another, response is used: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
7
At the end: Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. We stand.
Giving and Receiving Peace Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given us access to his grace. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you.
cf. Romans 5.1, 2
We offer one another a sign of peace, and offer our gifts to God. The Table is set with bread and wine.
Hymn Jesu, lover of my soul, let me to thy bosom fly, while the nearer waters roll, while the tempest still is high: hide me, O my Saviour, hide, till the storm of life is past; safe into the haven guide, O receive my soul at last. Other refuge have I none, hangs my helpless soul on thee; leave, ah, leave me not alone, still support and comfort me. All my trust on thee is stayed, all my help from thee I bring; cover my defenceless head with the shadow of thy wing. Thou, O Christ, art all I want; more than all in thee I find; raise the fallen, cheer the faint, heal the sick, and lead the blind. Just and holy is thy name, I am all unrighteousness; false and full of sin I am, thou art full of truth and grace. 8
Plenteous grace with thee is found, grace to cover all my sin; let the healing streams abound, make and keep me pure within. Thou of life the fountain art: freely let me take of thee, spring thou up within my heart, rise to all eternity. Charles Wesley (1707-1788) ABERYSTWYTH, CP 96
Prayer at the Preparation of the Table Risen Lord and Saviour, present among us with the wealth of your love. Cleanse us from sin and give us the faith to offer our praise and grow in your grace. Amen.
Great Thanksgiving Prayer
It is indeed right and good to give you thanks and praise, almighty God and everlasting Father, through Jesus Christ your Son. For in these forty days you lead us into the desert of repentance that through a pilgrimage of prayer and discipline we may grow in grace and learn to be your people once again. Through fasting, prayer and acts of service you bring us back to your generous heart.
9
Through study of your holy word you open our eyes to your presence in the world and free our hands to welcome others into the radiant splendour of your love. As we prepare to celebrate the Easter feast with joyful hearts and minds we bless you for your mercy and join with saints and angels for ever praising you and singing: Choir:
Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua. Hosana in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosana in excelsis. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
All glory be to you, our heavenly Father, who, in your tender mercy, gave your only Son our Saviour Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there by his one oblation of himself once offered a full, perfect and sufficient sacrifice, oblation and satisfaction for the sins of the whole world; he instituted, and in his holy gospel commanded us to continue, a perpetual memory of his precious death until he comes again. Hear us, merciful Father, we humbly pray, and grant that, by the power of your Holy Spirit, we receiving these gifts of your creation, this bread and this wine, according to your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. 10
Christ is the bread of life: When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim your death, Lord Jesus, until you come in glory. Therefore, Lord and heavenly Father, in remembrance of the precious death and passion, the mighty resurrection and glorious ascension of your dear Son Jesus Christ, we offer you through him this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Grant that by his merits and death, and through faith in his blood, we and all your Church may receive forgiveness of our sins and all other benefits of his passion. Although we are unworthy, through our manifold sins, to offer you any sacrifice, yet we pray that you will accept this the duty and service that we owe. Do not weigh our merits, but pardon our offences, and fill us all who share in this holy communion with your grace and heavenly blessing; through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen. We kneel or sit. Silence
11
The Lord’s Prayer Trusting in the compassion of God, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.
Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
Giving of Communion Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. As the ministers receive communion the choir sings Choir
Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis. Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi: dona nobis pacem. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace.
Please stand in your place if you would like to receive the bread of communion. Please indicate if you would like a gluten-free wafer. When the communion administrant says The Body of Christ we respond Amen.
12
Communion Motet Drop, drop, slow tears, and bathe those beauteous feet, which brought from heaven the news and Prince of peace. Cease not, wet eyes, his mercies to entreat; to cry for vengeance sin doth never cease. In your deep floods drown all my faults and fears; nor let his eye see sin, but through my tears. Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625), arr. Alex Berry
Prayer after Communion Lord God, you have renewed us with the living bread from heaven; by it you nourish our faith, increase our hope, and strengthen our love: teach us always to hunger for him who is the true and living bread, and enable us to live by every word that proceeds from out of your mouth; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. We stand
13
Hymn Father, hear the prayer we offer: not for ease that prayer shall be, but for strength that we may ever live our lives courageously. Not for ever in green pastures do we ask our way to be; but the steep and rugged pathway may we tread rejoicingly. Not for ever by still waters would we idly rest and stay; but would smite the living fountains from the rocks along our way. Be our strength in hours of weakness, in our wanderings be our guide; through endeavour, failure, danger, Father, be thou at our side. Love Maria Willis (1824-1908) SUSSEX, CP 416
The Dismissal Christ give you grace to grow in holiness, to deny yourselves, take up your cross, and follow him; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen. Voluntary
Sonata No. 3 in A, i) Con moto maestoso – Felix Mendelssohn, Op. 65
The concluding organ voluntary is offered as part of our worship.
