Welcome to Bradford Cathedral The seat of the Bishop of Leeds and a Centre of Worship and Mission One of three Cathedrals in the Church of England Diocese of Leeds
Our purpose is to serve Jesus Christ as a vibrant community of worship and mission enriching the City, the Diocese and further afield. ❖ A very warm welcome to Bradford Cathedral for this service, particularly if you are visiting or with us for the first time. We hope you will stay and enjoy refreshments with us after the service, which will be served at the West End of the Cathedral. ❖ Please join in with saying or singing the words in bold type in this order of service, and sit or stand as directed if you are able. Large print copies are available from the stewards at the main door. ❖ As part of our work to keep you safe and healthy, we are keeping some windows and doors open to make sure the Cathedral is well ventilated, which may mean parts of the nave are cold. We advise you, where you can, to dress warmly when attending a service. ❖ Children’s Space takes place in the Parish Room. Please take your child to the Children’s area by the north door during the first hymn. They return and sit together during the administration of Communion. Today’s Eucharist is sung by the Boys and Lay Clerks of the Cathedral Choir. The choral setting is the Communion Service in F by Harold Darke (1888-1976). ❖ If you need to, please sit down at any point in the service, even if the instruction is to stand. It is more important for you to be comfortable and safe. We will be pleased to help you if you wish to receive a gluten-free wafer. Please speak with one of the stewards at the main door before the start of the service. We apologise that the Hearing Enhancement Loop is not working. There will be no collection taken during the service but you are invited to make a donation to the Cathedral using the donations box by the door, or online, through the Cathedral website. ❖ In the event of an emergency, please remain calm and seated. Stewards will direct you out of the Cathedral.

Third Prelude "Veni Emmanuel" - Edward Bairstow (1874-1946)
Welcome and Greeting The Rt Reverend Dr Toby Howarth, Bishop of Bradford We stand. Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit Blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. There is one body and one spirit. There is one hope to which we are called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all. Peace be with you. and also with you.
Hymn Hark the glad sound! the Saviour comes, the Saviour promised long: Let every heart prepare a throne, and every voice a song. He comes the prisoners to release in Satan's bondage held; the gates of brass before him burst, the iron fetters yield. He comes, the broken heart to bind, the bleeding soul to cure, and with the treasures of his grace, to enrich the humble poor. Our glad hosannas, Prince of peace, thy welcome shall proclaim; and heaven's eternal arches ring with thy beloved name. Philip Doddridge (1702-1751), Luke 4:18-19 BRISTOL, CP 27
We remain standing.

Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness. Be not wroth very sore, O Lord, neither remember iniquity for ever: thy holy cities are a wilderness, Sion is a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation: our holy and beautiful house, where our fathers praised thee. Drop down… RORATE CAELI, Mode i
The Bishop introduces a period of silent prayer. Silence
Prayer of the day Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness and to put on the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which your Son Jesus Christ came to us in great humility; that on the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. We sit.
First Reading
Jeremiah 33:14-16 read by Jane Thompson
The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will fulfil the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 15In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 16In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: ‘The LORD is our righteousness.’ This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 5
Choir
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel Reading
Cf. Isaiah 40:3-5
Luke 21:25-36 read by the Revd Canon Paul Maybury, Acting Dean
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus said to his disciples: ‘There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves. 26People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27Then they will see “the Son of Man coming in a cloud” with power and great glory. 28Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.’ 29 Then he told them a parable: ‘Look at the fig tree and all the trees; 30as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. 31So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. 32Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place. 33Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. 34 ‘Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day does not catch you unexpectedly, 35like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. 36Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

Presentation of the Candidates The Bishop asks the candidates for baptism Do you wish to be baptized? I do. The candidates for confirmation, who have previously been baptised, are presented to the Bishop and congregation. The Bishop asks the candidates, Have you been baptised in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit? I have. The Bishop addresses the whole congregation. Faith is the gift of God to his people. In baptism the Lord is adding to our number those whom he is calling. People of God, will you welcome these candidates and uphold them in their new life in Christ? With the help of God, we will.
The Decision The Bishop addresses the candidates for baptism and confirmation. In baptism, God calls us out of darkness into his marvellous light. To follow Christ means dying to sin and rising to new life with him. Therefore I ask: Do you reject the devil and all rebellion against God? I reject them. Do you renounce the deceit and corruption of evil? I renounce them. Do you repent of the sins that separate us from God and neighbour? I repent of them. Do you turn to Christ as Saviour? I turn to Christ. Do you submit to Christ as Lord? I submit to Christ. Do you come to Christ, the way, the truth and the life? I come to Christ. 7
The Signing with the Cross The Bishop makes the sign of the cross on the forehead of the candidates for baptism saying, Name, Christ claims you for his own. Receive the sign of his cross. Do not be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ crucified. Fight valiantly as a disciple of Christ against sin, the world and the devil, and remain faithful to Christ to the end of your life. May almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness, restore in you the image of his glory, and lead you in the light and obedience of Christ. Amen.
Prayer over the Water Praise God who made heaven and earth, who keeps his promise for ever. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. We thank you, almighty God, for the gift of water to sustain, refresh and cleanse all life. Over water the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through water you led the children of Israel from slavery in Egypt to freedom in the Promised Land. In water your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us from the death of sin to newness of life. We thank you, Father, for the water of baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore, in joyful obedience to your Son, we baptize into his fellowship those who come to him in faith. Now sanctify this water that, by the power of your Holy Spirit, they may be cleansed from sin and born again. Renewed in your image, may they walk by the light of faith and continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Lord; to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be all honour and glory, now and for ever. Amen. 8
Profession of Faith Brothers and sisters, I ask you to profess, together with these candidates, the faith of the Church. Do you believe and trust in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe and trust in his Son Jesus Christ? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
Baptism The Bishop asks each candidate Name, is this your faith? The candidate answers This is my faith. The Bishop baptizes the candidate Name, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
9
After all have been baptized May God, who has received you by baptism into his Church, pour upon you the riches of his grace, that within the company of Christ’s pilgrim people you may daily be renewed by his anointing Spirit, and come to the inheritance of the saints in glory. Amen. The Bishop sprinkles the water of baptism over the congregation Almighty God, we thank you for our fellowship in the household of faith with all who have been baptized in your name. Keep us faithful to our baptism, and so make us ready for that day when the whole creation shall be made perfect in your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. An Organ Fanfare is played as the Bishop, ministers and candidates for confirmation gather at the front of the nave.
Confirmation Those to be confirmed stand before the Bishop. Our help is in the name of the Lord who has made heaven and earth. Blessed be the name of the Lord now and for ever. Amen. Almighty and ever-living God, you have given these your servants new birth in baptism by water and the Spirit, and have forgiven them all their sins. Let your Holy Spirit rest upon them: the Spirit of wisdom and understanding; the Spirit of counsel and inward strength; the Spirit of knowledge and true godliness; and let their delight be in the fear of the Lord. Amen. The Bishop comes to each candidate in turn, as the congregation pray silently. Name, God has called you by name and made you his own.
10
The Bishop lays his hands on the head of each candidate and prays Confirm, O Lord, your servant with your Holy Spirit. Amen. Defend, O Lord, these your servants with your heavenly grace that they may continue yours for ever, and daily increase in your Holy Spirit more and more until they come to your everlasting kingdom. Amen.
Welcome of the newly baptised and confirmed There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism: by one Spirit we are all baptized into one body. We welcome you into the fellowship of faith; We are children of the same heavenly Father; We welcome you. We stand.
Giving and Receiving Peace God has made us one in Christ. He has set his seal upon us And, as a pledge of what is to come, Has given the Spirit to dwell in our hearts. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. We offer one another a sign of peace, and offer our gifts to God. The Table is set with bread and wine.
Hymn Awake, awake: fling off the night! For God has sent his glorious light; and we who live in Christ’s new day must works of darkness put away. Awake and rise, with love renewed, and with the Spirit’s power endued. The light of life in us must glow, and fruits of truth and goodness show. 11
Let in the light; all sin expose to Christ, whose life no darkness knows. Before his cross for guidance kneel; his light will judge and, judging, heal. Awake, and rise up from the dead, and Christ his light on your will shed. Its power will wrong desires destroy, and your whole nature fill with joy. Then sing for joy, and use each day; give thanks for everything always. Lift up your hearts; with one accord praise God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Words: J. R. Peacey (1896-1971) based on Ephesians 5:6-20 Tune: DEUS TUORUM MILITUM; CP 334
Great Thanksgiving Prayer The Lord be with you and also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God It is right to give thanks and praise. It is indeed right and good to give you thanks and praise, almighty God and everlasting Father, through Jesus Christ your Son. For when he humbled himself to come among us in human flesh, he fulfilled the plan you formed before the foundation of the world to open for us the way of salvation. Confident that your promise will be fulfilled, we now watch for the day when Christ our Lord will come again in glory. And so we join our voices with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven to proclaim your glory for ever praising you and singing:
12
Choir Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O God Most High. Amen. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again. And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup, and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you.
13
Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen. We kneel or sit. Silence
The Lord’s Prayer Looking for the coming of his kingdom, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.
Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
Giving of Communion Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. As the ministers receive communion the choir sings O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace. 14
Please stand in your place if you would like to receive the bread of communion. Please indicate if you would like a gluten-free wafer. When the communion administrant says The body of Christ we respond Amen. If you are at home and unable to receive communion, you may wish to use this prayer, after Richard of Chichester: Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits you have given me, for all the pains and insults you have borne for me. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother, may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen.
Communion Motet People, look east. The time is near Of the crowning of the year. Make your house fair as you are able, Trim the hearth and set the table. People, look east and sing today: Love, the guest, is on the way. Furrows, be glad. Though earth is bare, One more seed is planted there: Give up your strength the seed to nourish, That in course the flower may flourish. People, look east and sing today: Love, the rose, is on the way. Birds, though you long have ceased to build, Guard the nest that must be filled. Even the hour when wings are frozen God for fledging time has chosen. People, look east and sing today: Love, the bird, is on the way. Stars, keep the watch. When night is dim One more light the bowl shall brim, Shining beyond the frosty weather, Bright as sun and moon together. People, look east and sing today: Love, the star, is on the way. 15
Angels, announce with shouts of mirth Christ who brings new life to earth. Set every peak and valley humming With the word, the Lord is coming. People, look east and sing today: Love, the Lord, is on the way. Text: Eleanor Farjeon (1881-1965) Music: Christopher Steel (1938-1991)
Silence
Prayer after Communion O Lord our God, make us watchful and keep us faithful as we await the coming of your Son our Lord; that, when he shall appear, he may not find us sleeping in sin but active in his service and joyful in his praise; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. We stand.
Hymn The Lord will come and not be slow; his footsteps cannot err; before him righteousness shall go, his royal harbinger. Truth from the earth, like to a flower, shall bud and blossom then; and justice, from her heavenly bower, look down on mortal men. Rise, God, judge thou the earth in might, his wicked earth redress; for thou art he who shall by right the nations all possess. The nations all whom thou hast made shall come, and all shall frame to bow them low before thee, Lord, and glorify thy name.
16
For great thou art, and wonders great by thy strong hand are done: thou in thine everlasting seat remainest God alone. John Milton (1608-1674) Psalms 82, 85,86 ST STEPHEN, CP 37
The Blessing The God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ Jesus, establish, strengthen and settle you in the faith; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.
Giving of a Lighted Candle The Bishop gives all candidates a lighted candle lit from the Easter Candle. God has delivered us from the dominion of darkness and has given us a place with the saints in light. You have received the light of Christ; walk in this light all the days of your life. Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father. Go in the light and peace of Christ. Thanks be to God. Voluntary
