Welcome to Bradford Cathedral

CBE; and many well attended showcases of our choir and music department.

On 25th November 1919 King George V decreed that the parish church of St Peter Bradford was to become one of England’s parish Cathedrals, as the new Diocese of Bradford was formed out of the ancient see of Ripon. Today we are still in the youngest diocese in the Church of England. The three cathedrals at Bradford, Ripon and Wakefield bring their unique ministry to bear in the Diocese of Leeds and, together with Bishop Nick, symbolically represent the unity of this vast diocese. This year we shall be celebrating the Centenary with a programme emphasising faith, heritage, music, the arts and partnership. The first four months of events, highlighted in the first programme, included a series of thoughtprovoking talks from Bishop Nick, Judge Lawrence Saffer, Bishop John Pritchard and Anne-Marie Canning MBE; three excellent Artspace exhibitions; a wonderful singing day with John Rutter

I look forward to even more wonderful events in this second programme, where we welcome such noteworthy partners as Bishop Rowan Williams, Opera North, Thy Kingdom Come, Steeton Male Voice Choir, RSCM, Eliot Smith Dance, ACT Shakespeare, and the Bradford Literature Festival, alongside some more local work from our Education department and our upcoming Cathedral Festival in June. We are now looking forward to the remainder of 2019, with our special Centenary services on Sunday 24th November and our official Centenary date on the Monday, as well as all the further events happening from September that we can't wait to tell you about. Can I encourage you to make the most of this special year’s events and invite others along to join with us? The Very Revd Jerry Lepine Dean of Bradford

Northerner Always they could place him By that accent, and of course the town he came from Was a bit of a local joke. When he reached the capital, The braying elite made it absolutely clear

He’d never be Premier League. And yet he carried The north with him: even in the din Of that metropolis he gave out a silence That belonged to the rock-strewn hills and the deep Dales.

And he knew just how hard Northern people work: how women labour To produce cloth, how keeping sheep Can be an absolute pain, how bosses screw The last ounce out of you. He put this stuff In his stories, while the big literary noises

Of the Empire penned their elegant thoughts on war Or the upper crust. And people listened to him; They even remembered. But don’t get me wrong, He was earthy all right: he could offend. And between you and me, he was far too matey

With the wrong sort.

That capital in the south Thought it had shut him up. But afterwards, He visited his friends, caged up in fear, In a maze prison of streets. He knew at once He had to get them out. In fact, he had better Lead the way, because this fierce squabble Of trade and shoppers, these crowds whose cheer Mutated mid-sound in their gaping mouths To an execution-roar, This city hooked On toxic power games: this was no place To spend your resurrection. Somewhere at the edge Of his mind a bird-trill, a warbler’s churr, Water was plashing in that narrow street; The sky became big. Now stones were crunching Under his pierced feet that the lake would wash With its own tender rhythms. He was home.

During the Cathedral’s centenary year Diane Pacitti is our poet in residence. She will produce a collection of poems based on Bradford and its cathedral. 21
