Welcome to Bradford Cathedral The seat of the Bishop of Leeds
Our purpose is to serve Jesus Christ as a vibrant community of worship and mission enriching the City, the Diocese and further afield. A very warm welcome to Bradford Cathedral for this service, particularly if you are visiting or with us for the first time. We hope you will stay and enjoy refreshments with us after the service, which will be served at the West End of the Cathedral. Please join in with saying or singing the words in bold type in this order of service, and sit or stand as directed if you are able. Large print copies are available from the stewards at the main door. Children’s Space meet today. The children leave during the first hymn and return during the administration of communion. The Cathedral Choir lead worship this morning. The Choral setting is the ‘Little Organ Mass’ by Joseph Haydn (1732-1809). If you need to, please sit down at any point in the service, even if the instruction is to stand. It is more important for you to be comfortable and safe. We will be pleased to help you if you wish to receive a gluten-free wafer, nonalcoholic wine or to have communion brought to you in your seat; please speak with one of the stewards at the main door before the start of the service. If you would prefer to receive a blessing rather than bread and wine, please bring this service booklet with you to the sanctuary rail. If you use a hearing aid, please turn the setting to ‘T’ in order to take advantage of the induction loop in the Cathedral. Please check that you have switched off your mobile phone. Lavatories, including disabled facilities, are available towards the back of church. In the event of an emergency, please remain calm and seated. Stewards will direct you out of the Cathedral.

Hymn All creatures of our God and King, lift up your voice and with us sing, Alleluia, alleluia! Thou burning sun with golden beam, thou silver moon with softer gleam: O praise him, O praise him, Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Thou rushing wind that art so strong, ye clouds that sail in heaven along, O praise him, alleluia! Thou rising morn, in praise rejoice; ye lights of evening, find a voice: Thou flowing water, pure and clear, make music for thy Lord to hear, Alleluia, alleluia! Thou fire, so masterful and bright, that givest us both warmth and light: Dear mother earth, who day by day unfoldest blessings on our way, O praise him, alleluia! The flowers and fruits that in thee grow, let them his glory also show: Let all things their creator bless, and worship him in humbleness; O praise him, alleluia! Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son, and praise the Spirit, Three in One: Words: William Henry Draper, based on St Francis of Assisi Tune: Lasst uns erfreuen (Easter Song) CP250 (omit 5 & 6)

Prayers of Penitence Human sin disfigures the whole creation, which groans with eager longing for God's redemption. We confess our sin in penitence and faith. Lord, you give us this good earth, Yet we take your generous gifts for granted. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, you give us this good earth, But we squander its rich resources. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy Lord, you give us this good earth, But we fail to share your bounty with all your children. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Silence May God who loved the world so much that he sent his son to be our Saviour forgive you your sins and make you holy to serve him in the world, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. 5Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. 6Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you.

Hymn Holy Spirit, hear us; help us while we sing; breathe into the music of the praise we bring. Holy Spirit, prompt us when we try to pray; nearer come, and teach us what we ought to say. Holy Spirit, teach us through the words we read; bring to life the Bible with the light we need. Holy Spirit, give us each a lively mind; make us more like Jesus, gracious, pure and kind. Holy Spirit, help us daily, by your might, what is wrong to conquer, and to choose the right. Words: William Henry Parker (1845-1929) SP91 Tune: Pastor Pastorum CP360

You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honour and power, for you have created all things. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, O Lord
John 6.25-35 25
When they found him on the other side of the lake, they said to him, ‘Rabbi, when did you come here?’ 26Jesus answered them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal.’ 28Then they said to him, ‘What must we do to perform the works of God?’ 29Jesus answered them, ‘This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.’ 30So they said to him, ‘What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? 31Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, “He gave them bread from heaven to eat.” ’ 32Then Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.’ 34They said to him, ‘Sir, give us this bread always.’ 35 Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. After an opening prayer, we sit

Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. We sit

Giving and Receiving Peace You shall go out in joy and be led back in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall burst into song, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. We offer one another a sign of God’s peace
Hymn During this hymn a collection is taken The gifts of the people are presented and the table set with bread and wine Before the throne of God above I have a strong, a perfect plea: a great High Priest, whose name is Love, who ever lives and pleads for me. My name is graven on his hands, my name is written on his heart; I know that while in heaven he stands no tongue can bid me thence depart, no tongue can bid me thence depart. When Satan tempts me to despair, and tells me of the guilt within, upward I look, and see him there who made an end of all my sin. Because the sinless Saviour died, my sinful soul is counted free; for God, the Just, is satisfied to look on him and pardon me, to look on him and pardon me. Behold him there! the risen Lamb! my perfect, spotless Righteousness, the great unchangeable I AM, the King of glory and of grace! One with my Lord, I cannot die; my soul is purchased by his blood; my life is hid with Christ on high, with Christ, my Saviour and my God, with Christ, my Saviour and my God. Charitie L. De Chenez (1841–1923) SP 261 9
Prayer of Preparation Blessed be God, by whose grace creation is renewed, by whose love heaven is opened, by whose mercy we offer our sacrifice of praise. Blessed be God for ever.
Great Thanksgiving Prayer
Prayer E
It is indeed right, it is our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, almighty and eternal God. For you have created the heavens and the earth, and formed us in your own image. In the fullness of time you sent forth your Son, your eternal Word, who laid down his life for our salvation and rose from the grave, the first-fruits of your new creation. You send forth your holy and life-giving Spirit to give life to our mortal bodies and to renew the face of the earth. Therefore with all the heavenly hosts, we give voice to everything that you have made, and sing the eternal hymn of praise. Choir
Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt cĂŚli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. 10
We praise and bless you, loving Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; and as we obey his command, send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpoured may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son. On the night before he died he had supper with his friends and, taking bread, he praised you. He broke the bread, gave it to them and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. When supper was ended he took the cup of wine. Again he praised you, gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did, in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross. Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation, we proclaim his death and resurrection until he comes in glory. Christ is the bread of life: When we eat this bread and drink this cup we proclaim your death, Lord Jesus, until you come in glory. Lord of all life, help us to work together for that day when your kingdom comes and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth. Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving arms and bring us with all the saints to feast at your table in heaven. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, O loving Father, for ever and ever. Amen We sit or kneel 11

The Lord’s Prayer Looking for the coming of his kingdom, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray: Our Father in heaven hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.
Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
Giving of Communion Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. As the Lay ministers receive communion the choir sings Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: dona nobis pacem. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: grant us thy peace. Stewards will direct you to the Communion administration points. Please indicate if you’d like a gluten-free wafer or non-alcoholic wine. To indicate your wish to receive a blessing, please bring this service sheet with you. If you would like to receive the ministry of prayer for yourself or someone else, please go to one of the chapels. 12
Communion Motet Sacerdotes Domini incensum et panes offerunt Deo. Et ideo sancti erunt Deo suo, et non polluent nomen eius. Alleluia! In the temple do the priests bring incense and bread to offer unto the Lord. And therefore are they holy unto their God; nor shall they defile his sacred Name. Alleluia! Communion Hymn Walk the streets and hear the voices speak in tongues we do not know. In the interchange of cultures glimpse just how the world must go. In the multi-faith-full city, walk the streets and walk with God; walk the streets and walk with God. Climb the hills, above the fountains; look back down on City Hall. Share the struggles of the people, with a Christ who died for all. In the city in West Yorkshire, climb the hills and walk with God; climb the hills and walk with God. Pause for breath and search for meaning in the city’s joy and strife. Sing God’s praises here in Bradford draw together threads of life. Find new hope within the city, pause for breath and walk with God; pause for breath and walk with God. The first verse was written by the Touchstone Team during a retreat and the other two verses were written by Geoff Reid, who was Team Leader 1994-2009. Tune: Cwm Rhondda CP455

Prayers after Communion Generous Lord, with joy we have offered thanksgiving for your love in creation and have shared the bread and the wine of the kingdom: by your grace plant within us a reverence for all that you give us and make us generous and wise stewards of the good things we enjoy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Lord of all creation, as we have received the bread and wine, fruits of the earth and tokens of salvation, so with joy we celebrate your goodness and commit ourselves to serve you on earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. We stand
Hymn God is Love: let heav'n adore him; God is Love: let earth rejoice; let creation sing before him, and exalt him with one voice. He who laid the earth's foundation, he who spread the heav'ns above, he who breathes through all creation, he is Love, eternal Love. God is Love: and he enfoldeth all the world in one embrace; with unfailing grasp he holdeth every child of every race. And when human hearts are breaking under sorrow's iron rod, then they find that selfsame aching deep within the heart of God. God is Love: and though with blindness sin afflicts the souls of all, God's eternal loving-kindness holds and guides us when we fall. Sin and death and hell shall never o'er us final triumph gain; God is Love, so Love for ever o'er the universe must reign. Words: Timothy Rees (1874-1939) Tune: Hyfrydol by Rowland Huw Pritchard (1811-1887) CP 442 14
Blessing May God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is the source of all goodness and growth, pour his blessing upon all things created, and upon you his children, that you may use his gifts to his glory and the welfare of all peoples; and the blessing of God almighty the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.
