Welcome The Chapter of Bradford Cathedral welcomes you to this service. In our worship today we remember before God all those who work for the administration of justice and the security of society, pray for their work and thank God for the blessings of impartiality and tolerance, justice and mercy. The service is shaped around the order of Matins, the traditional morning service of the Church, which comes from the monastic offices which go back to the early centuries of Christian history. As we remember our ecclesiastical heritage, we remember also the legal inheritance for which our forebears strived and from whose work and perseverance we now benefit.
The Cathedral One of Yorkshire’s lesser known dales, ancient Bradford-dale was settled in Anglian times around the ‘broad ford’ which gave the city its name. The crossing place became a gathering place which gradually became a great city, welcoming and absorbing incomers from all over the world. Throughout thirteen turbulent centuries, there has been a place of prayer and worship on this hillside. Although it was attacked three times and ruined twice, this church has been rebuilt by people of faith for the future. The medieval nave and Tudor tower are landmarks of faith, drawing people into the welcoming space of the Cathedral and its grounds. As a civic church we have vital connections with the City and its institutions and, as a cathedral church, with a diocese that reaches out across West Yorkshire & the Dales. Day by day through our prayer, worship and work in this beautiful building, and through involvement in the wider community, we serve the people of our City, District and Diocese in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour.
The Cathedral Choir Bradford Cathedral Choir is made up of two independent top lines of boys and girls who sing regularly with volunteer adult singers. The Choir sings for the Choral Eucharist at 10.15am, and at Evensong on Sunday at 3.30pm, and at 5.30pm on Mondays and Tuesdays during term time. In addition, the Choir pursues a schedule that includes giving recitals and singing services elsewhere and going on tours to other parts of the UK and abroad. Today’s service is sung by the Cathedral Choir, conducted by the Director of Music, Alex Berry and accompanied on the organ by the Assistant Director of Music, Graham Thorpe.

Praise to the Lord, who o’er all things so wondrously reigneth, shieldeth thee gently from harm, or when fainting sustaineth: hast thou not seen how thy heart’s wishes have been granted in what he ordaineth?

Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee; surely his goodness and mercy shall daily attend thee: ponder anew what the Almighty can do, if to the end he befriend thee. Prayers of Confession

The psalmist writes: ‘Depart from evil, and do good. For the Lord loves judgment, and forsakes not his saints; they are preserved for ever: but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off.’ Let us confess our sins to Almighty God. Almighty God, our Heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbours, in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life, to the glory of your name. Amen.

The Bishop of Leeds declares God’s forgiveness Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. We pray together Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
Jubilate Deo sung by the choir O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands: serve the Lord with gladness, and come before his presence with a song. Be ye sure that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and speak good of his Name. For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting: and his truth endureth from generation to generation. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. ‘Service in B flat’, words from Psalm 100 Music by Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) 7
Old Testament Reading
Job 28:1-12
Read by His Honour Judge Jonathan Rose
‘Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place for gold to be refined. Iron is taken out of the earth, and copper is smelted from ore. Miners put an end to darkness, and search out to the farthest bound the ore in gloom and deep darkness. They open shafts in a valley away from human habitation; they are forgotten by travellers, they sway suspended, remote from people. As for the earth, out of it comes bread; but underneath it is turned up as by fire. Its stones are the place of sapphires, and its dust contains gold. ‘That path no bird of prey knows, and the falcon’s eye has not seen it. The proud wild animals have not trodden it; the lion has not passed over it. ‘They put their hand to the flinty rock, and overturn mountains by the roots. They cut out channels in the rocks, and their eyes see every precious thing. The sources of the rivers they probe; hidden things they bring to light. ‘But where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding? For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God Silence

Hymn God has spoken — by his prophets, spoken his unchanging word ; each from age to age proclaiming God the one, the righteous Lord ; in the world’s despair and turmoil one firm anchor still holds fast : God is King, his throne eternal, God the first and God the last. God has spoken — by Christ Jesus, Christ, the everlasting Son ; brightness of the Father’s glory, with the Father ever one : spoken by the Word incarnate, Life, before all time began, Light of Light, to earth descending, God, revealed as Son of Man. God is speaking — by his Spirit speaking to our hearts again ; in the age-long word expounding God’s own message, now as then. Through the rise and fall of nations one sure faith is standing fast : God abides, his word unchanging, God the first and God the last. Words: George Wallace Briggs (1875–1959) Tune: Hyfrydol SP 185

New Testament Reading
John 1:1-14
Read by Gill Arnold JP DL, Chairman, West Yorkshire Bench
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God Silence

Anthem All wisdom cometh from the Lord, and is with him forever. Who can number the sand of the sea, and the drops of rain, and the days of eternity? Who can find out the height of heav'n, and the breadth of the earth, and the deep, and wisdom? Wisdom hath been created before all things, and the understanding of prudence from everlasting. The word of God most high is the fountain of wisdom; And her ways are everlasting commandments. To whom hath the root of wisdom been revealed? Or who hath known her wise counsels? There is one wise and greatly to be fear'd, the Lord sitting upon his throne. He created her, and saw her and number'd her, and poured her out upon all his works. She is with all flesh according to his gifts, and he hath given her to them that love him. The fear of the Lord is honour and glory and gladness, and a crown of rejoicing. The fear of the Lord maketh a merry heart, and bringeth joy and gladness and a long life. Teach me, O Lord, the way of thy statutes, and I shall keep it unto the end. Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall keep it with my whole heart. Make me to go in the way of thy commandments, for therein is my desire. O stablish thy word in thy servant, that I may fear thee. Behold, my delight is in thy commandments: O quicken me in thy righteousness. We stand
Hymn All my hope on God is founded; he doth still my trust renew. Me through change and chance he guideth, only good and only true. God unknown, he alone calls my heart to be his own. 11
Pride of man and earthly glory, sword and crown betray his trust; what with care and toil he buildeth, tower and temple, fall to dust. But God’s power, hour by hour, is my temple and my tower. God’s great goodness aye endureth, deep his wisdom, passing thought: splendour, light, and life attend him, beauty springeth out of naught. Evermore from his store new-born worlds rise and adore. Daily doth th’Almighty giver bounteous gifts on us bestow; his desire our soul delighteth, pleasure leads us where we go. Love doth stand at his hand; joy doth wait on his command. Still from man to God eternal sacrifice of praise be done, high above all praises praising for the gift of Christ his Son. Christ doth call one and all: ye who follow shall not fall. Prayers
Led by His Honour Judge Jonathan Gibson
In the power of the Spirit, and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father. What does the Lord require of you? To love mercy, to do justice and to walk humbly with our God. What does the Lord require of you? To support the widow and orphan, the poor and the vulnerable and the victims of injustice and greed. What does the Lord require of you? To care for the hungry, the naked, prisoners, the homeless, the refugee and those who seek protection. 12
What does the Lord require of you? To be open to the breadth of God’s embrace, to join our praise with those who know God’s glory and to bring peace and well-being to all. Merciful God, strengthen by your Holy Spirit all who work for justice throughout the world, that your kingdom of peace, love and righteousness may come on earth as it is in heaven. We remember before you those nations and people who live in constant fear of oppression and tyranny, and we pray that integrity and justice may prevail. Lord, in your mercy hear our prayer. Merciful God, bless all who work for justice throughout West Yorkshire. We remember before you our colleagues of all professions who seek to help those who struggle to find a right direction in life. Guide us as we make decisions about the lives and deaths of others, that we may show forth your wisdom and compassion. Lord, in your mercy hear our prayer. Merciful God, be with all who are victims of crime and injustice; give them a sense of hope and peace of mind as they face the future. Touch and heal all those whose lives are scarred by cruelty and abuse; those damaged through neglect and a lack of love. Lord, in your mercy hear our prayer. Merciful God, we pray for those who have been convicted of crime and who are fulfilling the requirements placed upon them. We pray that they may know a change of mind and receive the support they need to amend their ways. Lord, in your mercy hear our prayer. Merciful God, we give thanks for all who support us in whatever capacity: our families and friends, our colleagues. Nurture in us the gift of faith, that we may know more clearly your love throughout our lives, and show forth the light of your presence in all we do. Lord, in your mercy hear our prayer.

Gracious and holy Father, give us wisdom to perceive you, intelligence to understand you, diligence to seek you, patience to wait for you, eyes to behold you, a heart to meditate on you, and a life to proclaim you; through the power of the Spirit of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen. A Prayer of St Benedict (480-547) We stand
Hymn Love divine, all loves excelling, joy of heaven to earth come down, fix in us thy humble dwelling, all thy faithful mercies crown. Jesu, thou art all compassion, pure unbounded love thou art; visit us with thy salvation, enter every trembling heart. Come, almighty to deliver, let us all thy grace receive; suddenly return, and never, never more thy temples leave. Thee we would be always blessing, serve thee as thy hosts above; pray, and praise thee, without ceasing, glory in thy perfect love. Finish then thy new creation: pure and spotless let us be; let us see thy great salvation perfectly restored in thee; changed from glory into glory till in heaven we take our place, till we cast our crowns before thee, lost in wonder, love, and praise.
