Welcome and notices The Reverend Canon Mandy Coutts, Canon for Mission and Pastoral Development We stand Silence In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Hymn Children leave for Children’s Space Forty days and forty nights thou wast fasting in the wild; forty days and forty nights tempted and yet undefiled: Sunbeams scorching all the day, chilly dew-drops nightly shed; prowling beasts about thy way; stones thy pillow, earth thy bed. Shall not we thy sorrows share, and from earthly joys abstain, fasting with unceasing prayer, glad with thee to suffer pain? And if Satan, vexing sore, flesh or spirit should assail, thou, his vanquisher before, grant we may not faint nor fail. So shall we have peace divine; holier gladness ours shall be; round us too shall angels shine, such as ministered to thee. Keep, O keep us, Saviour dear, ever constant by thy side; that with thee we may appear at the eternal Eastertide. G. H. Smyttan (1822-1870) and Francis Pott (1832-1909) AUS DER TIEFE (HEINLEIN), CP 95

Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
Silence Father eternal, giver of light and grace, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour, in what we have thought, in what we have said and done, through ignorance, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We have wounded your love and marred your image in us. We are sorry and ashamed, and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past; and lead us out from darkness to walk as children of light. Amen. 4
Almighty God, who in Jesus Christ has given us a kingdom that cannot be destroyed, forgive you your sins, open your eyes to God's truth, strengthen you to do God's will and give you the joy of his kingdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Prayer of the day The president introduces a period of silent prayer Heavenly Father, your Son battled with the powers of darkness, and grew closer to you in the desert: help us to use these days to grow in wisdom and prayer that we may witness to your saving love in Jesus Christ our Lord. Old Testament Reading
Deuteronomy 26.1-11
read by June Kelley
When you have come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess, and you possess it, and settle in it, 2 you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from the land that the Lord your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket and go to the place that the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for his name. 3 You shall go to the priest who is in office at that time, and say to him, ‘Today I declare to the Lord your God that I have come into the land that the Lord swore to our ancestors to give us.’ 4 When the priest takes the basket from your hand and sets it down before the altar of the Lord your God, 5 you shall make this response before the Lord your God: ‘A wandering Aramean was my ancestor; he went down into Egypt and lived there as an alien, few in number, and there he became a great nation, mighty and populous. 6 When the Egyptians treated us harshly and afflicted us, by imposing hard labour on us, 7 we cried to the Lord, the God of our ancestors; the Lord heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. 8 The Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with a terrifying display of power, and with signs and wonders; 9 and he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 So now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground that you, O Lord, have given me.’ You shall set it down before the Lord your God and bow down before the Lord your God.

Then you, together with the Levites and the aliens who reside among you, shall celebrate with all the bounty that the Lord your God has given to you and to your house. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence We stand
Psalm 91.1-11
The Lord will deliver them that love him. The Lord will deliver them that love him. Whoever dwells in the shelter of / the Most High and abides under the shadow of / the Almighty, shall say to the Lord, ‘My refuge / and my stronghold, my God, in whom I / put my trust.’ The Lord will deliver them that love him. For he shall deliver you from the snare / of the fowler and from the / deadly pestilence. He shall cover you with his wings and you shall be safe un/der his feathers; his faithfulness shall be your / shield and buckler. The Lord will deliver them that love him. You shall not be afraid of any terr/or by night, nor of the arrow that / flies by day; of the pestilence that / stalks in darkness, nor of the sickness that de/stroys at noonday. The Lord will deliver them that love him. Though a thousand fall at your side and ten thousand at / your right hand, yet it shall / not come near you. Your eyes have only / to behold to see the reward / of the wicked. The Lord will deliver them that love him.
6
Because you have made the Lord / your refuge and the Most / High your stronghold, there shall no evil / happen to you, neither shall any plague come / near your tent. For he shall give his angels charge / over you, to keep you in / all your ways. The Lord will deliver them that love him.

Gospel Reading
Luke 4.1-13
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, 2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished. 3 The devil said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a loaf of bread.’ 4 Jesus answered him, ‘It is written, “One does not live by bread alone.”’ 5 Then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6 And the devil said to him, ‘To you I will give their glory and all this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please. 7 If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.’ 8 Jesus answered him, ‘It is written, “Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.”’ 9 Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for it is written, “He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you”, and “On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.”’
7
12 Jesus
answered him, ‘It is said, “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.”’ 13 When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune time.
This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. After an opening prayer, we sit
Sermon The Very Reverend Jerry Lepine, Dean of Bradford Silence We stand
The Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. We sit or kneel

Giving and Receiving Peace Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given us access to his grace.
Romans 5.1, 2
The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. We offer one another a sign of God’s peace
Hymn During this hymn a collection is taken The gifts of the people are presented, and the Table is set with bread and wine Take this moment, sign and space; take my friends around; here among us make the place where your love is found. Take the time to call my name, take the time to mend who I am and what I’ve been, all I’ve failed to tend. Take the tiredness of my days, take my past regret, letting your forgiveness touch all I can’t forget. Take the little child in me scared of growing old; help me here to find my worth made in Christ’s own mould. Take my talents, take my skills, take what’s yet to be; let my life be yours, and yet let it still be me. John L. Bell (b. 1949) and Graham Maule (b. 1958) TAKE THIS MOMENT, SP 311

Prayer at the Preparation of the Table God of mercy and compassion, your Word calls us home to faith and love. Accept all we offer you this day, in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen.
Great Thanksgiving Prayer
Prayer C
It is indeed right, it is our duty and our joy, at all times and in all places to give you thanks and praise, holy Father, heavenly King, almighty and eternal God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. And now we give you thanks because you give us the spirit of discipline, that we may triumph over evil and grow in grace, as we prepare to celebrate the paschal mystery with mind and heart renewed. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing: Choir
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord Most High. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. All glory be to you, our heavenly Father, who, in your tender mercy, gave your only Son our Saviour Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there by his one oblation of himself once offered 10
a full, perfect and sufficient sacrifice, oblation and satisfaction for the sins of the whole world; he instituted, and in his holy gospel commanded us to continue, a perpetual memory of his precious death until he comes again. Hear us, merciful Father, we humbly pray, and grant that, by the power of your Holy Spirit, we receiving these gifts of your creation, this bread and this wine, according to your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.
Therefore, Lord and heavenly Father, in remembrance of the precious death and passion, the mighty resurrection and glorious ascension of your dear Son Jesus Christ, we offer you through him this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Grant that by his merits and death, and through faith in his blood, we and all your Church may receive forgiveness of our sins and all other benefits of his passion. Although we are unworthy, through our manifold sins, to offer you any sacrifice, yet we pray that you will accept this 11
the duty and service that we owe. Do not weigh our merits, but pardon our offences, and fill us all who share in this holy communion with your grace and heavenly blessing; through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen. We sit or kneel Silence
The Lord’s Prayer Trusting in the compassion of God, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
Invitation to Communion Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Blessed are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed.
12
Prayer Most merciful Lord, your love compels us to come in. Our hands were unclean, our hearts were unprepared; we were not fit even to eat the crumbs from under your table. But you, Lord, are the God of our salvation, and share your bread with sinners. So cleanse and feed us with the precious body and blood of your Son, that he may live in us and we in him; and that we, with the whole company of Christ, may sit and eat in your kingdom. Amen. As the ministers receive communion the choir sings O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: grant us thy peace.
Stewards will direct you to the communion rail Please indicate if you would like a gluten-free wafer or non-alcoholic wine To indicate your wish to receive a blessing, please bring this service sheet with you

Prayers after Communion Lord God, you have renewed us with the living bread from heaven; by it you nourish our faith, increase our hope, and strengthen our love: teach us always to hunger for him who is the true and living bread, and enable us to live by every word that proceeds from out of your mouth; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 13
We thank you, Lord, that you have fed us in this sacrament, united us with Christ, and given us a foretaste of the heavenly banquet prepared for all peoples. Amen. We stand
Hymn Sing praise to God who reigns above, the God of all creation, the God of power, the God of love, the God of our salvation; with healing balm my soul he fills, and every faithless murmur stills: to God all praise and glory! The Lord is never far away, but, through all grief distressing, an ever-present help and stay, our peace and joy and blessing; as with a mother’s tender hand he leads his own, a chosen band: to God all praise and glory! Thus all my gladsome way along I sing aloud thy praises, that all may hear the grateful song my voice unwearied raises; be joyful in the Lord, my heart; both soul and body bear your part: to God all praise and glory! Johan Jakob Schßtz (1640-1690) tr. Frances Elizabeth Cox (1812-1897) PALACE GREEN, CP 569, 333
