NOTICES AND WHAT’S ON 1st December 2019 Advent Sunday Hospitality
Faithfulness
Wholeness
THANK YOU – a special ‘thank you’ to everyone, those who helped at and those who came to, our special Centenary Service last Sunday. It was truly a wonderful and special occasion and we have had some lovely feedback. People enjoyed meeting up with past friends and as well as being a Cathedral celebration it was truly a wonderful reunion.
Today: ADVENT SUNDAY During the four Sundays of the Advent Season leading up to Christmas, Christian churches will be illuminated with candles as congregations light their Advent wreaths of evergreen, shaped in a perfect circle to symbolize God's eternity. Advent means "coming," and during the season, Christians prepare for Jesus' coming. The FLORAL DISPLAYS during Advent are made of greenery instead of flowers. This allows us to recognise that the Christian life isn’t all about celebration. It’s about hope and faith and the change in the floral displays demonstrates a longing for the greenery to turn to flowers, just as we long for sadness and our hope to turn to joy. Today at 10.15am we welcome the Rt Revd Jonathan Gibbs, Bishop of Huddersfield, who will be preaching and presiding at a service of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Communion. The ADVENT PROCESSION will take place this evening at 6pm, when we begin the season of Advent with an atmospheric and breath-taking candle-lit service, as we await the birth of Jesus. The cathedral choir will process around the building, singing both centuries-old and contemporary music, as we start our journey towards Christmas. Do come and share in this special service with us as we prepare for the coming Christmas season. Please note that incense will be used at this service. THIS WEEK NEXT SUNDAY we will welcome the Revd Dr Barbara Glasson. Barbara is President of the Methodist Conference and one of our Cathedral Chaplains as well as team leader at Touchstone in Bradford. Do come and hear her as she preaches at the 10.15am Eucharist At the WEDNESDAY@1 ORGAN RECITAL Thomas Leech from Leeds will be our recitalist. Thomas is the Director of the Diocese of Leeds acclaimed Schools’ Singing Programme and Musical Director of the Bradford Festival
Choral Society. The buffet lunch (£4), is from 12.30-12.55pm and the recital will start at 1pm. There will be a retiring collection which goes towards the organ fund. Do come and enjoy the lunch and the recital if you can. LAY EUCHARISTIC MINISTRY TRAINING Saturday 7th December 9.15am till 12noon with Canon Mandy at Bradford Cathedral. Enquiries about a donation towards the cost of the flowers should be made to either Pat Anderson or Margaret Rowe and the list is on the sound desk at the back of the Cathedral. Thank you. TAKE A SEAT APPEAL - Please help us to raise £150,000 as we begin a new century. As part of our centenary celebrations we recently launched our Take a Seat appeal to try and raise £150,000 to renew public seating in the Cathedral. Our existing chairs are old, do not meet safety standards and are incredibly difficult to move around. This is becoming a real challenge as we try to ensure that the Cathedral is properly equipped to serve the needs of everyone in our community through our worship, events and activities. We want you to help us make the right decision about new chairs and we will be keeping you informed as the project progresses. At the moment, all our efforts need to go into fundraising! Please do consider making a donation to the appeal. Pick up a leaflet at the rear of the Cathedral, or visit www.bradfordcathedral.org/appeal Thank you for your support. Christmas is coming ……………… book the dates for these special concerts Full details are in the September – December What’s On Booklet.
