The FLOWERS TODAY have been given by Christine Vaicekauskas in loving memory of her mother Marge, whose birthday would have been today, and of her father Harry, whose birthday would have been 27th February. DAVID PARNHAM It is with great sadness that we have to tell you that David Parnham passed away at home last week. David was Head Verger here for many years and was then made Verger Emeritus. He verged at numerous services, including the Maundy Service in 1997 when the Queen came to Bradford to distribute the Maundy Money, and at both Legal and Civic Services. He and Valerie, who died last year, were both very much a part of Cathedral life and they will both be greatly missed. His funeral is to be on Friday 1 March at 10am at Nab Wood Crematorium. CHILDREN’S SPACE meets today in the Parish Room. The Children’s Space leaders will be at the back of the Cathedral in the children’s area at the start of the service and grown-ups are welcome to stay if they wish to do so. INSTALLATION OF CANONS at Choral Evensong today at 4pm when Bishop Paul will install four new Honorary Canons here at the Cathedral. They are Revd Kathia Shoesmith, Revd Phil Stone, Revd Mike Cansdale and Revd Michael Wood. If you can, please do come along to support them and welcome them to Bradford Cathedral. Refreshments will be served after the service. MONDAY FELLOWSHIP meets this week on Monday at 2pm in the Parish Room when David Worsley will speak on his journey from being a potter to Head Verger here at the Cathedral. He will be bringing some samples of his work and refreshments will be served after the talk. Everyone is welcome so do come along. COFFEE CONCERT The 2019 COFFEE CONCERT SEASON begins this Tuesday when guitarist Galina Vale will be making a much welcome return visit. Coffee and cakes will be served from 10.30am and the concert, which lasts for approximately an hour, will start at 11am. The WEDNESDAY @1 ORGAN RECITAL this week welcomes Jeremiah Stephenson, who is currently Assistant Director of Music at All Saints Margaret Street in London. Do join us for the usual finger buffet lunch at £4 from 12.30pm – 12.55pm and for the recital, which is free and which will start at 1pm. There is a retiring collection after the recital, which goes towards the organ fund.
The ALPHA course continues on THURSDAY from 4.30pm – 5.45pm. The group meets for this week only, in the Parish Room, and as well as following the course – there is food and good company to share. Do come along if you can, even if you haven’t been before, or see Canon Mandy for more information. Please note that CHORAL EVENSONG this Thursday 14th will be in St Clement’s Church in Barkerend Road at 5.45pm and NOT in the Cathedral. The next BRING & SHARE LUNCH is next Sunday 17 February at 3 Cathedral Close. All are welcome to come and share in food and conversation in Canon Paul and Sarah’s home and any food you can bring on the day will be put on tables to share. The lunches are always popular and a lovely way to get to know people. Next Saturday and Sunday we welcome the Northern Cathedral Consort, who will be singing at Choral Evensong on Saturday and the 10.15am Eucharist on Sunday. THANK YOU We had a full Cathedral last Sunday for the Legal Service and it was a wonderful occasion when we welcomed the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, members of the legal profession, distinguished guests, and representatives of civic bodies and other faiths. Thank you to everyone who helped in any way to make the service such a memorable one - we are already looking forward to next year. HALF-TERM FAMILY ACTIVITIES Our education department is again organising some activities for the forthcoming school holidays on Tuesday 19th and Thursday 21st February. On these days there will be paper craft activities from10am- 2pm and guided tours for families at 11am and 1pm. The Cathedral is also open every weekday from 9am- 4.30pm (except on Wednesdays between 12.30pm and 2pm), for visitors, and especially for children there is the Pelican Trail, when you can pick up a booklet and explore the Cathedral, looking for pelicans! Pick up a leaflet at the back of the Cathedral for more details. It will soon be Fairtrade Fortnight, which starts on 25 February and as we have done for the past few years, we are to hold a FAIRTRADE BREAKFAST this year on Sunday 3 March. Book the date and we will let you have more details soon. SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE LUNCH, Tuesday 5th March 12 noon for 12.30pm when Sally and Paul Brodie will be offering a main course of savoury pancakes and a dessert of sweet pancakes – always much enjoyed by all who attend this, what has become, a popular annual event. Afterwards there will be tea and coffee and a Cathedral Quiz! Tickets, available from Community Committee members, the Cathedral Office or www.bradfordcathedral.eventbrite.com are £8.50 or £4 for under 12s with children under 5 free. It’s a lovey way to make new friends and everyone is welcome so don't forget to bring your friends and family. You do need a ticket though so that we know how many people to cater for.
The LENT COURSE this year is on Wednesdays 13, 20 and 27 March at 7.30pm, when we will welcome Bishop John Pritchard, Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Leeds and author of many books. His theme for the course is ‘The Elusive God’ and in his series of three addresses he will explore how we live our faith when each day may feel like a struggle. Put the dates in your diary and do come and share in this special time with us. CONFIRMATIONS Easter Eve Saturday 20th April 2019 Confirmation groups will begin at the end of February. These are a wonderful opportunity to explore more about the Christian faith, to revisit or refresh things you might have forgotten or to prepare for baptism or confirmation. For further information or to book your place on a group please contact Canon Mandy or one of the clergy team or email info@bradfordcathedral.org Canon Paul is now in Sudan and wishes to thank everyone who has supported his visit. Please do remember him in prayer as with another five clergy he will be leading a conference supporting clergy there. He is due to return on 20 February. HONEY We have more stocks of the local honey on the Fairtrade Stall. This is produced by Denholme Gate Apiary, which produces the finest quality, pure honey from the varied flowers of the Yorkshire countryside. There are five different varieties and all are unique in both flavour and appearance. Do give it a try. NEW ELECTORAL ROLL This year all Church of England Churches have to renew their Electoral Roll, which means that everybody will need to complete a form, even if you have been on the Electoral Roll previously, and return it to the Cathedral Office no later than 12 noon, Monday 18 March. The forms are available from the sound desk at the back of the Cathedral and anyone who is baptised and aged 16 or over may join the Electoral Roll and we encourage everyone to do so. Your attention is drawn to the Electoral Roll Privacy Notice, which we would ask you to read. Eva Mileusnic’s Counter-Flow exhibition is now in the North Ambulatory. If you have still not looked at her amazing work please do so and follow the footsteps towards the Holy Spirit Chapel.
